Please please do yourself a favor and ignore those negative reviews because this is such a beautiful novel, probably my favorite Bing Kuai'er novel yet!! I'll admit, I love a dogblooded bitter exes story, and this one delivers in every way: the original misunderstanding is reasonable, the suffering is intense, villains are actually intelligent, and the reconciliation feels earned. The emotions of both the leads are very poignant, and the writing style flows well both in the original Chinese and in translation.

Neither of the two leads are perfect, and their... more>> inability to both communicate clearly and fully trust one another in their past led to a pretty horrible breakup. It's definitely a lack of reading comprehension to say that either was more at fault or that MC doesn't deserve ML and vice versa, as they are pretty equally victims in the whole misunderstanding. When everything was finally revealed, it was such a moment of relief to finally understand why ML was acting so seemingly contradictory.

Both MC and ML are very layered and lovable characters, and after they truly let their walls down around one another, the relationship is very sweet and not toxic in the slightest. They both apologize for their wrongs, and while some might say ML did nothing wrong, I strongly disagree:
Spoiler

I'm not one to raise any character on a pedestal, much less one as nuanced as ML. He is just like any other human and he makes mistakes, but he steps up and owns the ways in which he could have provided MC with more security and not been as stuck in his own head with self-doubt. ML's reaction to the breakup and the later revelation of the full truth is entirely reasonable, and I have so much respect for his level of self-awareness.

All in all, a great example of a character who must first respect themselves enough to love another person in a healthy way.

[collapse]

The two of them are well matched and very equally in love. I couldn't ask for more. Will add that the smut in this novel is leagues better than in Exclusive Love, as while these two are also a bit rough, MC actually is an active participant and enjoys it!! No weird power play or dubious consent to be found here.

The MC of this novel is best friends with the ML of Exclusive Love, which was written right before this novel. Their relationship is really wholesome, and they genuinely care about each other in an entirely platonic way. The plot lines of the two novels intersect, and I went back to re-read the few scenes where the MCs of this novel show up in Exclusive Love, these are the ones I found:

Spoiler

Ch 24-26 - Li Luo hanging out with Jiang Liushen & co.

Ch 36 - Jiang Liushen punches Duan Mingyang

Ch 60 - award show where Li Luo and Duan Mingyang exchange (mildly antagonistic) words

[collapse]

The official translation is complete and I really wanted to support the official English release, but at nearly $100 for all three volumes and no ebook, I just bought the Changpei raws and called it a day with MTL. I'm assuming the negative reviews are because the English translation is so expensive, because otherwise the low rating makes little sense. Rest assured if you can't afford the official release, MTL is very readable and the writing will still grip your heart (and tear it apart). <<less

What's up with the reviews? They deserved each other. Please don't judge them just because you have the god's eye view as a reader. Li Luo felt betrayed and acted the way he did. Duan Ming Yang also has a ton of issues which requires Li Luo to solve.

I love Li Luo for his sassiness and him being flirty and pretty. He was very sheltered and haughty, wanted to play with Duan Ming Yang at first but fell in love with his earnestness. I hated Duan Ming Yang at first... more>> but the author urged readers to not jump into conclusions and read on. As I read on, I am totally head over heels for ML.

There's also plenty of smut, explicit and totally hot. All these with a splash of typical rich family dogblood plot makes this novel really hard to put down. I also like Su Zhi's character a lot. Strong and smart ladies are a nice additional in every novel. I also like the extras which thoroughly shows you the ML's POV from the start. <<less

I'm so angry with myself for letting previous reviews of this novel stop me from reading it. Thankfully, I gave it a chance. Bing Kuai'er never fails to please me with their writing; I always feel like we're on the same brainwave. The strongest point of their novels is always the main CP, dedicated to each other like hell and sweet. Oh--and the MLs, they're always after my heart lmao.

The language of love in this novel is insane. There are so many details to symbolize how much Li Luo and... more>> Duan Mingyang love each other. But Li Luo's hair--HIS HAIR--the meaning behind it nearly killed me. AGH, I can't shut up about Li Luo and Duan Mingyang, it gets so sticky-sweet after chapter 50

Clearing up misunderstandings: Duan Mingyang does not treat Li Luo like a who*e during s*x. Bing Kuai'er just likes to write kinky shit. Seriously, go read their other novels. They tend to lean towards mild sadomasochism LOL (and they write the most passionate s*x scenes). This ain't the first time I've read about one of their ML's who likes to spank MC during s*x. But there's always a balance: ML always sweetly pampers MC a lot, but they're fierce in bed—I've noticed this trend. So, yes, rough s*x but ML always treasures MC, so more like ROUGH-KINKY-LOVEY-DOVEY sex

MC's father did NOT go to jail because of Duan Mingyang. It was because of the Duan family, but Duan Mingyang was not involved in it.

Also, that one thing about MC spending several hours in the rain for ML, let me explain: they had an argument a couple of chapters before where MC stated he wanted a clean-cut from ML (returning to a stranger-stranger relationship), and THEN he found out the story behind ML's engagement ring (I really don't want to spoil it, but let's just say ML was wearing the ring for someone special *cough cough MC*, and MC misunderstood that the ML had a sweetheart the entire time). So get this: they just had their argument, but MC found out that ML loved him all along, but ML thinks that MC still hates him. That's what accounts for his cold treatment. I know it sounds dramatic and shit, but I hate to break it to you: This novel is the dog blooded and dramatic type! But I will admit that it's one of the tamer dog blood novels I've read. Also, ML isn't an as*hole about it. MC gets a fever from the rain, and ML takes him in and calls in a doctor. He takes care of him. Bing Kuai'er never writes as*hole ML's that don't give a shit.

Furthermore, ML tells MC that they can't "go on" anymore because he realized how dangerous it is for the MC to be associated with him. His family is powerful, wealthy, and can take down MC with a snap of a finger. Additionally, he holds himself in low-esteem and tells MC that he's a dull person and MC can be happier with someone else (it's sad, because MC always did tell ML that he was a boring person LOL—but I think he said it with a bit of affection though, but it still hurts).

Spoiler

Duan Mingyang's voice is rarely so low and soft. "You shouldn't choose me as the object of pursuit. You are excellent and proud. Your admirers are countless. There are too many people who can make you happy. A boring and dull person like me, it's not suitable for you, you will get bored sooner or later." (Ch. 52)

[collapse]

Do NOT blame Duan Mingyang. Here, he has clearly lost hope. At this point of the novel, Li Luo has already rejected him two times, and Mingyang even says he doesn't think he can survive the third breakup. How dejected and in despair does a person have to be to think this way? To believe they're not lovable--he doesn't dare to believe Li Luo can love him again.

Now that that's all cleared up, let me get this straight: You have to read this novel with the ability to read between the lines and catch tiny details. You will hate Duan Mingyang if you fail to catch the subtleties of Bing Kuai'er's storytelling. But if you know what's important and what's gonna make another reappearance in later chapters, you already kind of know that Duan Mingyang wholeheartedly loves Li Luo.

Having read all of Bing Kuai'er's novels, I can say that I'm familiar with their writing style as well as the characterizations they tend to incorporate, and this is an important factor when judging their work. So take this from someone who actually completed the novel and regularly reads Bing Kuai'er's works. Plus, author recommended readers to read the whole story. Stopping at 50% means you only get the bitter/sour and not the sweet.

I got teary-eyed so many times. When we found out what THE RING meant. When Li Luo was going through Duan Mingyang's weibo and realized that Mingyang had closely followed him and secretly loved him from afar for five years in the time that they'd been apart. So many clues were there. It's so hard to read Duan Mingyang as a character; even Li Luo had a difficult time reading him as a person and that's what ultimately led to their break-up, but obviously, we readers get the better end of the stick. We can always go back and closely look at every detail, unlike Li Luo who simply cannot go back in time and inquire everything about Mingyang.

This is one of those novels where you can't judge too quickly, and you can't jump to conclusions about the ML either until the end of the story, when everything has come to light (I really dislike when readers only read 50% of the novel and judge a character who obviously has more to them than meets the eye). There are several hints throughout the story that ML has obviously loved MC all along, author placed them there for us to catch (you have to read between the lines instead of taking everything at surface value).

Of course we would empathize with Li Luo, because we are reading everything from his point of view—we know all his grievances and turbulent emotions, as well as what he has endured and sacrificed. We can't say the same for Duan Mingyang (ML) because his pov is not the story's main perspective. You want Duan Mingyang's pov? Be patient enough for the extras. Everything he feels is laid down perfectly in the extras. He's the type of person who shows his love through his actions (the story behind the engagement ring that he wears on his hand actually says a lot; it also made me sad for him). We get all these little glimpses of his romantic persona through the little details about him (the ring, the wallet, the "I will only love one person forever", the reason why he drives a Maybach, the mousse cake), so trust in his character. He's actually not a scumbag ML, truly. In fact, what I love about Bing Kuai'er is that they make ML's that I LOVE—charismatic, flirtatious, coquettish, and protective. Duan Mingyang is very different from their other ML's in that he is more of the stoic and take-action-instead-of-speaking type, but that doesn't make him any less charming as an ML.

The previous reviews empathized with Li Luo and hated Duan Mingyang, but you have to understand that Li Luo's not completely innocent either. He first approached Duan Mingyang with the intention of deceiving him and using him for his own gains just to anger his father. Also, I could tell that he never truly 100% trusted Duan Mingyang when they were together in their college years, and even in the present. He continuously said things and did things that—to me—felt like he was putting Duan Mingyang below him. This is also what leads to the misunderstandings in the present storyline. Because of Li Luo's words and actions, Duan Mingyang felt a kind of inferiority that he always suppressed, and he always wanted to be better so he could feel worthy. The overall conclusion here is that both characters have flaws to them which have contributed to this love-hate relationship they currently foster, and casting all the blame on ML is narrow-minded.

Now, this novel focuses on love-hate and while I wouldn't categorize it as melodramatic, I would say that it focuses less on fluff and more on the intense feelings of rekindling a relationship, especially when the two people appear to hate each other to the bone (even though we all know they secretly love each other obsessively). If you want a novel that's all sweet and fluff, I'd recommend 专属深爱. It's by the same author and the protagonists of that novel make appearances in this one! Jiang Liushen is actually one of the most flirtatious and endearingly protective ML's I know, and Xia Xi'ai matches him perfectly with his cute, obedient, but fiery personality. Their relationship makes me envious; you can tell Jiang Liushen cherishes him seriously and Xia Xi'ai is also just as loving towards him. <<less

I originally didn't want to write a review, but the behaviour of the male lead did it for me. At this point of the story I really want Li Luo to fall in love with someone else (really anyone would do) and make Duan Mingyang suffer (even though he would probably just say ok and go on ugh!!!).

wanted to put 2.5 because the premise was good but the ML just kept injuring MC's and my feelings continually without any worthwhile redemption on his part. Yes their misunderstanding kept piling up... more>> till it exploded and he -ML- did what he did to

Spoiler

"PrOtEcT" or keep the MC at his side but that was no reason to treat him like a who*e and literal garbage during interc**rse (and even normally), not even minding nor giving importance to his repeated and I quote "slower...". really don't understand how Li Luo *ss wasn't busted.

Not even talking about the distrust Duan Mingyang had toward Li Luo from the beginning while our cute bean just repeatedly trusted him and gave him occasion to redeem himself. Noooooooo he had to repeatedly break the heart of our MC, play with his feelings, debase him and many more that it just hurts my soul.....

And just when the misunderstandings seemed to be solved ML had to literally say that they could not go on anymore to our MC who just spent several hours under the rain while having a cold and having took a flight rapidly to go see the ML and apologize while still ill?????? The nerve of him really! yes he -ML- suffered all those years having been dumped by Li Luo but it's not a if MC was happy either, his father went to jail indirectly because of ML and he had to suffer silently because his ennemies had a s*xtape of him and ML which could destroy his reputation.

[collapse]

So yeah I was hoping to see Duan Mingyang beg and grovel at our MC's feet -even lick them- before their reunion, but now I just feel tired of all that DM do to LL and just want him to apologize just to be ruthlessly and coldly rejected and even have his feeling played with....... ugh! I can't even...

Didn't want to rant so much but could not help it. But I recommend this novel just because it refreshed my definition of despicable. woe me for hoping for a sweet sugary Topxbottom. Don't even know if I can finish it.

Update: just read c53 and really MC kind of disappointed me a bit. <<less

I agree with @wallyblob

For me, ML deserves better. I really can't forgive a person who destroys other people self esteem. As a person who have been in ML's position who've been made to believe that they are boring, that's emotional manipulation and even now I still do believe I am and I just have accepted It won't go away no matter how much other people tell me I am interesting, I'm in constant fear of boring other people.

I get that it's easier to pity MC's since you know their side... more>> of the story but that just shows how much you're not interested in other people's pain, I'm looking at you @notquitesham, who was treated as a wh*re? Isn't it kinky s*x.

This whole misunderstanding thing is started by the MC plus being a unreliable narrative that tells just what he believe happens. Well there won't be a story from the start if the MC didn't mess all this up or irrational enough that he just jump into conclusion without confronting or question what even the f*ck that ring was. I'm not really into that. Author why make your MC like this?!? What's so good about him? ML are you in the right mind? You were first approach to be used and you're willing anyway. Who am I to judge love. <<less

what they both think are unrequited love

[collapse]

The angst is intense, although if you've read other angsty novels in the genre like e.g. Hui Nanque's works (and this novel reminded me a lot of novels like 'Flying Gulls Never Land' and 'Yesterday Was Like Death', but it's a bit milder and less dogblood), the angst isn't too bad - just enough to squeeze your heart and make you binge-read.

The idea that the MC doesn't deserve the ML, or vice versa, is frankly absurd. I think some people didn't understand the characters when reading, because the idea that 'Li Luo deserved better', or 'Mingyang deserved better' is so weird - like, did people not understand what they were reading or why the characters acted the way they did? Saying that 'I personally suffer form low self-esteem, so if a character in this book is the same, then the person who makes him feel bad about himself is bad' This completely removing the ML's agency and responsibility for his own feelings and mindset and misunderstands the reasons why the characters behaved the way they did. Seriously, people need to separate fiction from their own reality.

Yes, they hurt each other a lot, but each have a very good reason to do so, and don't actually know how much the other person suffers because of their words and actions.

Take Li Luo - he's not perfect, and in the past he approaches Mingyang in the beginning with a selfish goal and is ready to play with Mingyang's feelings just to reach his goal (to get back at his own father). Yet he does this because he is young and spoiled, and doesn't really think about whether him wooing Mingyang for the wrong reasons can end up hurting Mingyang.

Then he falls in love for real, and immediately pursues the ML in earnest. Yes, his mindset is still immature and too idealistic, but he is genuine in his pursuit and truly loves Mingyang and wants Mingyang to reciprocate his feelings. He's even quite masochistic since Mingyang gives him very little in return, to the point where he doesn't know whether the ML cares about him or not.

The the big turning point happens, and completely crushes Li Luo:

Spoiler

they have s*x and Li Luo finally has the hope that maybe, just maybe Mingyang likes him too and might eventually come to love him. Only to be told that it was all deceit, Mingyang used him for his own selfish gain, and not only did he sleep with Li Luo without returning his feelings (even though Li Luo directly told him he loved him), but he videotaped it, showed it to his evil family and gave them sensitive information about Li Luo's dad that results in his dad going to prison. Plus Mingyang left Li Luo to wake up alone in the bed after s*x (not even giving him aftercare, which is pretty bad manners)

[collapse]

So now there's a sextape of Li Luo's most intimate moment, where he not only has s*x for the first time, but also confesses his feelings. And the ML admits to doing it and even taunts him about it 5 years later.

How would you feel if you had been so thoroughly betrayed by the person you loved?

From Li Luo's perspective, every cruel word he says to Mingyang (and he only says cruel things, while objectively what Mingyang did was cruel actions, and actions that consistently threaten and hurt him even in the present time - like trying to hurt his career) is completely justified.

It's clear for the perceptive reader that when he hauls insults at Mingyang, the ML is truly hurt and upset. But that's because as a reader you know that Mingyang is the ML, so there are more to the story than what we and Li Luo are initially led to believe. But Li Luo was hurt so badly, and everything the ML does and says in the present just serves to illustrate to the MC how his feelings were seemingly never reciprocated, but repaid with indifference, scorn and cruelty. It makes sense for Li Luo to try and put Mingyang down whenever he can, and he has no reason to believe Mingyang will really care what he thinks anyway, since the ML seems to not love him at all.

As for Mingyang - the reader gradually senses that there's something wrong with the way he constantly responds to Li Luo, and how he acts around him. It later gets revealed that

Spoiler

Mingyang always felt just as insecure about Li Luo's feelings, and being reserved and from a poor background (bullying at his university is implied), he has somewhat low self-esteem and is perceptive enough to realize in the past that Li Luo approached him for the wrong reasons. So while he senses that Li Luo's feelings change, he's scared to believe that the MC genuinely likes him and isn't just a rich playboy who wants to amuse himself by toying with Mingyang. When he finally lets himself believe that Li Luo loves him, his trust is immediately shattered. He has good reason for not realizing why Li Luo breaks up with him or speaks so cruelly to him (remember that Li Luo also has great acting skills).

[collapse]

So Mingyang's cruel behavior is based on his idea of what happened and why Li Luo acts the way he does.

That's just to say that each character has his reasons for his behavior, and neither are completely wrong or completely just, they are both misguided.

Later on, they learn to communicate.

Spoiler

They both realize how the other person has trust issues and work to dispel the mistrust and show their honest feelings. Mingyang still feels that he's not good enough for Li Luo, but Li Luo, while being playful and teasing Mingyang, still demonstrates that he truly loves Mingyang. In fact, Mingyang isn't s*upid and once he realizes the truth of why Li Luo broke up with him 5 years ago, he understands why Li Luo has been acting the way he has the entire time - which is why it's shown that he had a sleepless night after he found out about the videotape. He realized that all along, Li Luo loved him and that he himself inadvertently caused the breakup because he was too insecure and shot that video of Li Luo's confession, which caused Li Luo to misunderstand.

[collapse]

The misunderstandings are super heavy in this novel, but they're not s*upid and makes sense in context.

Also there's a lot of humor and cute moments to alleviate some of the angst. The side characters are fun, especially the dynamic between Li Luo and his assistant and his deadpanned manager. Plus his 'bromance' with Jiang Liushen (the ML from Exclusive Love is a side character here).

There's even a very dogblood scene of attempted r*pe that the author makes comedic (sounds super inappropriate, but it works because:

Spoiler

Nothing bad happens - the evil antagonist has the MC drugged with the intention of having him r*ped and to film the whole thing as blackmail material, but the MC of course gets saved by the ML. The poor bodyguard of the villain is ordered to do the deed and complains because he's not into men and doesn't want to have s*x with the MC, but he has to because it's his job (working for the villain sure isn't easy lol)

[collapse]

There are lots of small comedic moments and funny comments by the MC that takes the edge off some of the very angsty scenes.

All in all the novel is well-balanced. The pacing is good so it's never dull to read, the characters are fleshed out and engaging, the writing style is easy to read but with some nice descriptions that sucks you into the story and character emotions, and the plot is mostly flawless and logical, even though it is very melodramatic. <<less

So I read this book after "exclusive love" which I really liked and MC was part of it so I came here excited. And indeed I liked the story or plot, actually even than "exclusive love", however I loved the characters in "exclusive love" better.I didn't appreciate the characters in here much especially the MC. I think the ML Duan Mingyan deserved better.

The story is basically a lover reunion after bunch of misunderstandings. Please do NOT read the story in quick judgement cause the characters or things are not... more>> what they seem, most of things are miscommunication, however I said most, not all of them. I understand none of the characters are perfect, and they have their flaws. For example, the ML could have prevented some of these misconceptions by talking which he didn't, however later he tried his best. Thus, I still believe he deserved better. I still dont know why he felt for MC when the only things MC has going for the relationship was the fact that he was the one who chased and got back again (with motives) with the ML and that thing with the hair. Meanwhile the ML literally turned his entire future and life goals around him. This is ridiculous. But I guess when you have been in the darkness for a long time and suddenly someone show interest or life vibrancy, you bound to fall.
For me, the MC was basically like a little spoiled kid that CAME up with a bet (motives) with his friends to get a limited toy and then when things didn't turned according to his will, he wail to his parents like a little victim that his friends trapped him. It was basically like that for me.

I hated with all my heart that each time he get a little jealous or envious he start saying very mean and demeaning things to ML. It is laughable how at the beginning the author is trying to paint him as non-bitter Ex as ML was favoring another boy when literally it was killing him inside that it wasn't him getting that attention. He's such a.....

Anyway Please also don't believe most of MC's narration. Actually things get clearer at the end and the extras when we get ML's POV. ML is really smitten and so love with him. He just that he doesn't express himself and has a low self-esteem because he believes MC's level is soo much higher than his.

What annoyed me the most is that when everything is said and done towards the end, and each time they had a little lovers face-off, MC is basically like in a joking way " you know my family is going back to his previous glory, continue provoking me, I will deal with you later" even though he KNOWS the ML has lower self esteem and concerns about their individual status. Some of you MC's fans might find these coquettish words as adorable, but my heart went cold as I read each time those paragraphs. I hope its my MTL that bugged each time at those points cause I can't imagine that each time you have a little lovers cute argument or a real dispute, your partner uses your weakness to reply back to you. Sorry I can't relate to this.

My five stars ⭐️ are to help to boost the ratings a little because of the (1star) from those harem readers. The other reasons are the story itself and the ML. <<less

I give it a 3.5 for the story but up it to a 4 for the great translation. I have to MTL the rest so there's a limit to the translations there but I can tell from the translated chapters that the author has great writing abilities. Often times, these online novels are so immature it seems like it was written by a kid so I appreciate when I run into a good writer.

Now, onto the story: ML and MC both are very flawed characters and there's no point to... more>> love nor hate neither of them.

MC is a pampered, rich son of heaven kind of character who takes too much pride in himself. He's selfish and willful and always feel like things should go his own ways. BUT, he's also lonely and sincere in his own ways. The author did a great job in building his character. He's not perfect but he's also not rude/bad. He may not considered the impact of the words he said because he had a silver tongue (sharp tongue) but he is also willing to apologize if you are hurt/misunderstood by him. He did approach the ML with only the thought of playing with the ML for a while and dump the ML, but that's the dynamic for their love stories and character settings so I think it works great. From the MC POV, MC gave his all to ML and had s*x with him but instead he was filmed and slut-shame. ML's half (step) brother used the video to slut-shame the MC. Because MC was so prideful, he refused to admit defeat and lied to ML that he did not consent to the s*x and ML r*ped him in that tape (since MC was drunk). MC can be a real bit*h sometimes which makes his character very annoying to some readers. There were many times I wanted to transmigrate into the novel and slap the sh*t out of him but I don't hate him, just annoyed.

ML is also not perfect. Yes, he went through pains and loved the MC all those years. MC did hurt him but that also goes both ways. ML is kind of the cold dominating type in the beginning and was fine with humiliating the MC in public (that part at the party in the beginning where the bodyguards subdued the MC in front of his boss and coworkers). I wouldn't say ML is too good for MC. I can feel his pain but also feel like he's the way he is because of his characteristics/personalities. It actually feels weird for him to think of MC as his only light as MC can only bring darkness to him. I feel that someone with a kinder heart should be a better match for him but the author did not create such character to heal the ML. Blame the author... there are many fishes in the sea, in reality, I think ML would have found a better soulmate for himself.

This is how MC and ML communicate:

MC: I love you. Do you love me?

ML: *silent*

MC: So you don't love me at all!

ML: I love you.

MC: Liar!

Also this happened in the novel:

MC: asked ML to have s*x with him and seduced ML twice.

ML: had s*x with MC.

Next morning, MC: You r*ped me!

Overall, great novel and I enjoy it a lot. <<less
