In a Mary-Sue novel, the readers all liked the Devil Venerable, the second male lead who devoted himself whole-heartedly to the female lead. However the female lead only loved the male lead who abused her physically and mentally.

Readers: Why doesn’t the female lead like the Devil Venerable?!

Devil Venerable: This Venerable also wants to know. But what I really want to know is why I even like the female lead at all.

In order to understand why the female lead wasn’t attracted to him, the self-conscious Devil Venerable brutally interrogated the entire cast of characters from the novel.

It is one of the well written and well translated novel.. Translation by mourningcrow is good, not sure of the other one.

It has story, if you want to read a quirky humour with a well thought out story, this works.

Each character is unique and well developed. It is a good read.

note: If you like over possessive and arrogant president MC and s*upid/naive ML and abusive love relationship with communication issue and some female as villains, then it is not for you. You will definitely find it boring. Because this story... more>> is not about 2 people and rest of the world is there only to make that 2 people fall in love with each other. LOVED IT!!!! Butttttt, why end it there authorrrr? Why not give us mooooorreee? Ah so curious so curious! Hope the author sequels this... It fr needs more.

When it comes to characters, they're all so well developed and fleshed out it's seducing me. The fact that the demonic sect isn't just misunderstood bcs the MCs are from it, and isn't filled with loyal and honoring members who kiss the ground under MC's feet. I love how... more>>

the MC is rather careless about his own death and safety, not even understanding why either would be important when his entire existence is focused on bettering his cultivation and battling people who have to be capable of harming him.

The female charas are all very well written and beloved. Having all the demonic sect higher ranks obsessed with a certain thing -more like hyper fixating on one certain thing- while maintaining wild ambition for that spot which holds the most power was really great.

Ah but really authorrrr, putting yuri bait and having me on you hook every time.... Why not make a 2nd part and stop teasing? How can you mention more realms and the fact that they'll soon ascend yet not give us some snippet to see? How about just making a sequel and show us a little bit? Love the fact you didn't directly state who is gong and shou, which means they're reversible. Truly an enlightened author.

I guess it's always like that, you have to hate great authors a little.

There's itti bitty things that aren't 100% like establishing that love isn't really that permanent or sought after and that dual cultivation isn't frowned upon, yet having the FL suffer thru slutshaming. Even if they are 'the righteous sect' I don't see a reason to have women be required and upheld to the status as virg*n in that sort of society. <<less

Finally, after months, I found another novel that piqued my interest and managed to satisfy my craving. It's not mindblowing--just like what the other people said, but it is a really good novel. I was pretty much able to guess the ending.

Great start, kinda bland second half, and a really great ending. I would definitely purchase an English physical copy if it ever gets one.

I enjoyed this novel for the most part, especially the first half. The second half was weaker in my opinion. If you are looking for something with decent plot but not too complicated, this is a perfect novel to read inbetween other more complex or heavier novels. The romance was... alright, pretty standard servant-master type of thing with an obssesive servant part. Though I was pleasantly surprised with how a certain point was handled in that aspect. Still, if you are looking for something ground breaking, this ain't it.

This was a great novel. I'm sad it end soon thou as others said in reviews the chapters are long and very good.

Across from the main plot that was engaging and force you to read it in one go and finish it, the small hint of philosophy and way of world that author brought in writing was really perfect 👌pointing as several important things that can change the life of person and if you don't have a wise person beside you to guide you in right pass you might got... more>> distracted and ruin your whole life and how the person accompany you effect in your life. And the person you never expected would give his or her life for you while you didn't even care about it beforehand.

Devil venerable is a wise person and being in wars and raising in general family has effected in his manners and Yin hanjiang who followed him all the time and his lord ideas had effected on him as well. Anyway cut the story short.... It was fantastic it just that it didn't have any dog food so it's a little bit heartbreaking (ಥ _ ಥ) but it doesn't matter cause it was good enough, at least it had two kiss scenes I'm satisfied with that༼ಢ_ಢ༽.. I don't ask for anything more I can just imagine how they practice protector shu cultivation method for thirty or more years. (❁´▽`❁) *✲ﾟ* Actually if anybody find a +18 fanfic about them please send the link for this venerable (ಥ﹏ಥ)

This book is okay. It is kinda interesting for the first half but only truly gets interesting in the second half so it feels tedious when you start reading it. The romance is not overt and is more like an overarching theme than anything else. Which is to say that not much time is spent describing how they feel or talking about how they feel or even being affectionate.

I don't even know why I always stopped myself from reading this. I probably even forgot the reasons why I skip this for the longest time. But let me tell you, I am so glad I tried this one.

What made me fall in love with this novel is the characters, the comedy, the actions, and the worldview.

It took me a few chapters to realize that Oh right! This is a shounen ai! Which isn't exactly my genre but I was obsessed with how profound everything was that I just continued... more>> on.

I love the characters, all of them actually. They're not just black and white, protagonist and antagonist but they have real personalities. They feel more real than some villain and hero characters. Also, I like how in character they were all the way until the end. It gives you the feeling of wanting to know them more, to prob that blackhole of each characters because you know there are still endless mysteries waiting for you there. It's so different from what I usually read that I think this will give me so many daydreams.

Also, for the main couple, there are so many romantic scenes in the novel that I myself found surprising that I even label it as romantic. Their trope may not be an original but I love the way the author handled thier trope well. It's so nicely done with the equality in the relationship, and all that 'kind of yandere (but not really) ' vibe coming from ML, plus the mental sickness too!

I may like Mary Sue character at some times, but characters that are genuinely perfectly imperfect are what I needed to stabilize my life.

After this read, I will honestly reflect on myself first and then to my principles and I might come out new. To the lovely characters, thank you for teaching me a new perspective of life. To the author thank you for writing such a roller coaster book, making me feel emotions, and opening my eyes to such characters. And also to the translator, thank you for giving me a chance to read such a story, for making me understand and for feeding us such a well-translated work. I wouldn't have been moved this much if not for the great translation.

My current thoughts on this novel:

Plot wise, this is quite a strong novel. It's well written. I usually avoid these type of stories based on the type of summary this novel has, due to them usually being riddled with cliches and annoying tropes. Surprisingly it manages to verge away from this to an extent.

What I like about this novel is that each character has their own unique circumstances & experiences. The main plot of this story + the MC & ML's plot does not diminish or dominate over all... more>> characters in this novel.

What I mean to say, is that each character has their own unique plot or "scenes" occurring concurrently with the MC & ML. It leads to the characters and plot having more depth & making the world of the novel feel a lot "fuller" (like stuff going on) which I like.

If there was one thing I really had to question or had issue with, was the unfettered devotion the ML had towards the MC. At times, I felt it was almost contradictory and put me off... For example, the ML in the "Novel" which this story uses as a plot device similar to transmigration, describes & depicts the ML as extremely obedient or well pretty much subservient to the MC...

  • I believe already at maybe CH 12 (?) for example, the ML is immediately disobeying the MC to try and protect him. Not much has happened at this stage for the ML to immediately have serious OOC behavior, but then again, this is a romance novel that is also a BL (and also he does quite a few OOC things even before this way earlier on)... I mean, thinking about the ML's backstory & how immediately, he just dedicated his life to the MC, it doesn't surprise me. It just bothers me how often the ML did this though, and he did it quite often.
If there was one criticism I had in regards to this, it would be that the plot should have allowed more time for the MC & ML to develop in the early stage of the story if your gonna do this, before moving the ML into the "lets get this romance somehow started!" route, as at early stages of the story, the author already started making the ML act really OOC extremely early on into the chapters such as disobeying the MC.

  • It's important to note that the MC barely did anything hugely significant at the very beginning stages of the novel that would have warranted this.
  • Considering the MC had mostly been indifferent to the ML before the plot device was introduced at Chapter 1 & afterwards, the only thing that I'd consider to have formulated some form of "OMG I must disobey my Master and act OOC" development at this point was the Frost Flower or whatever it was called, so it really didn't make a whole lot of sense.
Notes on translation: The translation was pretty good and easy to read.

Notes on rating: I’m rating a 4.2/5. Novel wasn't overly grating & I didn't feel like I lost too many braincells reading this. Translation was really good as well. <<less

What can I say? It's a good book.

The MC is the leader of a demonic sect that acts how it should. What I mean is that its members aren't just "misunderstood" characters, and they really only care about their own ambitions and techniques. They'll step on whoever they need to and whoever they can. That being said, they all have their own unique personalities and you never get bored reading about them.

The MC himself cares about mortal lives but not really those of other cultivators, which I can respect. The... more>> book never makes him out to be the good guy who just happens to run a demonic sect. No, he'll have you tortured because you won't give him a book he wants. The ML is even more ruthless, but you wouldn't know until the last 20 or so chapters.

The story makes sense and everything is explained in the end. The humor is on point, as well as the emotional parts. The cast is interesting and the CP are obsessed with each other, especially the ML to the MC.

Try not to be too put off by how much of a puppet the ML feels like for the majority of the book. Rest assured that by the very end he is his own person and the MC loves every side of him.

Finally, the translation is fantastic. Seriously good job ^w^

PS. This is a shounen-ai, but there are some implied spicy bits at the end. It is also implied that MC is gong, in case you couldn't gather that from the seme protagonist tag :P <<less

I found this story pretty fun at first, and the worldbuilding kept me interested the rest of the time. But it just so happened that it wasn’t what I was looking for, so I ended up becoming bored after a while. I can still highly recommend it though! I’ll definitely come back to it when I’m in the mood for this kind of story~

CHARACTERS: 5/5

Oh wow are the characters of this novel good! Some of them do follow the more common conventions, but in a good way? The Mary... more>> Sue OG!Protagonist, for example, is likeable. And so is the female scum villain meant to die in the first arc! LOL, case in point, the author is great at creating likeable characters with a lot of depth to them!

SETTING: 5/5

The setting also deserves a perfect score! The author pays very close attention to their details and worldbuilding. I felt like I learned a lot about cultivation and the like reading this! The story spans across centuries, so there’s a lot of fun things to explore too~

ROMANCE: 4/5

The romance here has a pretty unique flavor. The MC presents as Demi, and seems to have no interest in people. The ML is similar, but his devotion to his Venerable makes him a little more quicker on the uptake! It’s a slow burn kind of romance, is probably the best way to describe it. With the ML struggling through his unrequited love while the MC learns to care for people ever so slowly.

PLOT: 4/5

I found the premise of the story really fascinating! Rather than having an outsider that read the novel transmigrate into the story to change things, this novel has one of the characters of the novel receive the original novel! It’s similar, yes, but even the slight uniqueness to it gave birth to many new opportunities for storytelling~

As for the general plot, it’s a bit complicated. But the basic gist is that the MC has to stop the OG!FemaleProtagonist from staying in love with the OG!MaleLead — which is much much harder than it sounds. Meanwhile, the MC also has to figure out what to do with his subordinate, who he learned from the original novel is very loyal... and has a propensity of going mad 😂

RATING: 4/5

Since I didn’t finish it, I’m keeping the rating at a general 4/5. I have high opinions of this novel, and I definitely want to reread it again! Hopefully I’ll be in a better mood for it next time. <<less

I laughed to tears in some places. Truly a comedy lol. But the concept is certainly intriguing. I really think with all my heart that reading it wont disappoint you.

This is a masterpiece huhuhu. I really love most of the characters here aside from the antagonist ofc. Venerable huhuhu I love youuu you're the besttt. Yin Hanjing, what more can I say you're sooo adorable we I really love you're dominating sideee. Zhongli Qian, my most love character huhuhu his soo my typeeee a gentleman, handsome, strong and smarty guyyy. Where cann I finds someone like youuu. Baili Qingmo, my so good goddess, I wish you luckkk in your journey tru you divine identity, I love youuu.

Sighh, I can't... more>> I'm so inlovee. I really love this danmei. This is one of my favorite besides mxtx novels. I really like its plot too, the pov of every character is so much fun. And when I read the author's note I can't stop laughing. Actually I really want moreee. I want to know how they dominated the whole worlddd. What a powerful couple. At the end, I really like how the author write it, the plot twist, the reason behind what every character is doing, the author really treated them like they are real. And I'm so happy because of that, I also want to think they are real, just that they are in a different world <<less

I normally don't like reading novels either a seme protagonist so this pleasantly surprised me.

I loved the concept of this novel and its execution was perfect. It can get very confusing in the beginning regarding what happened in the OG!novels. I'm also still not quite sure what influenced Baili QingMiao to live He WenZhao so much.

I loved how Yin Hanjiang went mad when he thought the Venerable died. I found his idea of lighting a corpse lamp to guide the Venerable's way in the underworld romantic, in a weirdly morbid way.

Man, this was the best completed novel that I got to read in a long time. This was a really good read, as I like shounen-ai way more than yaoi, so I didn't mind, not even a bit, that it didn't have anything explicit. The protagonists were really cute and I liked them very much, as well as the other characters in the novel (not you, He Wenzhao), and the plot was stunning, I didn't expect the plot to be so complex. Really recommend it.

A very fun read, I loved them all. The MC and ML were great and I'm bad at this so I’ll leave it at that, the real mvp was Zhongli Qian though XD poor f*cking guy really. I also really loved Shu Yanyan and Qiu Congxue too, very fun characters and I surprisingly grew to like Baili Qingmiao and her boi Su Huai. They all just so fun really.

Words can’t even describe how much I love this. It goes on my toplist like Mdzs and Priest danmei. The comedy, the angst, the longing feeling of love is just wonderful. Both main characters are perfect, healthy relationships, wonderful. Not to mention, the side characters all has engaging role. I love love this!!

So satisfying, but so short! I didn't pay attention to the number of chapters and thought it had at least 170, but then I reached chapter 79 and next was the end?!

This novel is not mind blowing but is one of the best danmei where the MC knows is inside a book and the female characters are quite interesting too. I think it is more plot driven than romance driven, just pay attention to the tags is not yaoi is shounen ai, there's no scorching kisses or mut mut scenes,... more>> those who will enjoy this story will do so because of the humour (not my tea) or the satisfaction of reading a late romance where you keep cheering for the whole story that your CP will realize their feelings and will be together at last. <<less
