The Military Chef of a Ruined World

Just days before his final discharge, Sergeant Shin Young-joon, a military chef by profession, witnessed the doom of the world.

An apocalypse, that came out of nowhere and ruined the world that he used to know.

In the blink of an eye his battalion fell into shambles, all the communication lines, and radio frequencies were severed, and before him was a message stating:

[Congratulations on your awakening!]

[Occupation: Novice Chef Lv.1]

If only he had a profession like a warrior or an assassin, he might have attempted to stand his ground alone.

But what was given to him was clearly the supporting job of a chef.

With the recent developments in progress, he didn’t have any choices, other than saying, “From now on, I’ll be the one to feed you all.”

Absolutely amazing! One of the best apocalypse novels I've ever read, of all JP, CN and KR novels. One of the few KR novels which doesn't regard all governments and military as tr*shs. There are both good and bad soldiers and MC is a good soldier but not just a soldier. MC doesn't like killing people but it doesn't seem whiny at all. He either gives them a chance to redeem or (forcefully*) reform them most of the time.

Let me list the pros and cons

pros:

  • The world building is vast and each group of survivors with different social structures doesn't feel repetitive.
  • The battles are mostly small to medium scale wars with small amount of personal fights and large scale wars with both modern weapons and fantasy abilities mixed well.
  • The soldiers are slefish but still perform their duty as the situation allows them to. The tone of the story moves forward with hope admist despair and the plot progression is very great.
  • I thought mc's ability would be boring but it's actually unique and interesting.
cons:

  • Mob voices from mc's surbodinates can sound pretty s*upid.
  • The world building is too vast and the ceiling of power levels seems too big that it's worrying if author will be able to keep his pace in later arcs.
Here are my speculations for latter arcs that may be spoilers

Spoiler

Author may be building up to MC becoming a god.

We may be expecting intergalatic wars in late arcs.

It's not that different from a typical "Awakening in an Apocalypse" story.

Still, it's quite a competent story and the protagonist having a production job lets us explore more of the interpersonal relationships rather than pure actual fighting.

If you dislike military novels, like me, don't worry. While the characters may be soldiers, there is not much of a difference from a typical "Guild-focused" novel of the genre.

Give it a try!

I am certainly enjoying it.

At the behest of the translating team, I have taken on the role of dispatching more readers to this hidden gem of a novel.

(It's only my second review so here goes nothing.)

Translations? Great.

... more>> Enjoyable main character who cares and takes care of people close to him and feeds them delicious, drool-inducing, drug-like addicting foods? Amazing. (I'm a sucker for teamwork in my novels.)

Delicious descriptions of food with a large variety of cuisines? Even better. (We got Japanese, Korean, and Italian cuisine in just 18 chapters!)

Realistic actions and depictions of characters that don't feel too cringe? And favorable depiction of the military (which is rare in apocalyptic novels) ? So cool. (Help, I'm running out of intensifiers.)

Nice writing in general and with no harem so far as the eye can see? Awesome.

So if you've taken the time to finish reading my cringe review, make sure to check out the novel!

And thanks for taking the time to read this amateur review writer's um... review! <<less

This book is quite enjoyable. From the characters to the story, all around a complete story. No grammar issues. There were a few times that I had issues understanding the story because of a sudden and unexpected pov shift, but nothing all that bad. If there is one thing (yes I have to give a bit of critique) that annoys me, it is the morals of the MC. He is like 'No killing - anyone'. Okay. When he comes across arsonists and robbers he brainwashes them (idk why he thinks... more>> its any better than killing them outright), when he comes across mass mu*derers, s*avers, and more gruesome guys he STILL keeps it up. But when he comes across
Spoiler

vampires

[collapse]
hes like 'nah an whole entire new species so idc anymore just kill them'. Look if you're gonna use those kinds of morals you may as well kill them all and be done with it. Well anyways that was my TED talk, really enjoyed the story, recommend reading it. <<less

Now I did like this, and it was a very uniqe novel. But like all cooking stories it usually starts off great and quickly falls off. However this story is more about the action/adventure parts of the ruined world rather than endless paragraphs on cooking, food, and the reactions. But even with this, after the starting premise (intro arc) was over it soon became stalely repetitive.

This novel also suffers a bit from having too much characters, especially considering how early into the story it is. So there isn't any real... more>> character attachment, and development of them. Instead you get fast transitions such as, "This guy was a wimp, but he ate the cooking with courage buff, so now he's a berserker!"

There are also some basic world plotholes. Like I get I'm nitpicky here and this is just a setting to make the story go, but I don't like how all forms of communications just stopped due to the apocalypse. This is a military base. Even one with a communications tower. It is very common to have long distant radios as backups, and even more code beeper things to communicate if need be. But there was none. The world is also ending, yet no one in their god dang mind gives a fk that their friends, family, wives, and children are out there. Not a single person even attempts to run or has a big mental breakdown to go out to search for them. Because the author wanted to show how tightnit their corps are! BS. There are many other such logical/world plotholes if u take some time to think.

I would've originally rated this as a 4 due to my liking for the book, but for the 2 new mini arcs after the premise setup starting arc, the story is very repetitive and predictable. The characters are also very basic and predictable. The MC being the MC every1 starts to treat him as a "god" and nothing he says can't be wrong. His group is also #1 almost everytime (in the world and always #1 in Korea rankings) despite there being countless other military bases, guard companies, escort services, gangs, secret service, special ops, royalty, government headquarters, bittime ceos. There is so much others, thousands of places in the world, with hundreds of them being far better than his military base... yet there's none, wouldn't be surprised if the author makes the other competing top 2 world rankings be not even military to emphasize the MC's prowess at this point...

If there's any remote possitives past the start, there is a big lack of females to interupt the story with braindead harem <<less

First of all, the translation is great, gotta give props to the TL for giving the novel proper justice.

Story is great, it's very interesting, the author did their research and does really well on the writing by skipping things they don't know much about, instead of making things up with shallow knowledge from googling.

Spoiler

For example, in chapter 53 the blacksmith made a knife for MC, author show the process of learning about mc's weapon specs so the blacksmith can personalize it for him.

But the author skipped the blacksmithing process because he doesn't know much about how an expert black smith would make a masterpiece just from shallow googling

[collapse]

So all in all so far, the author manages to dodge plotholes, but I might just be too ignorant to notice those plot holes, I dunno, can't tell, but I do know that if I don't notice those plot holes (if they exist at all) then surely casual readers wouldn't either.

It's a good read, very interesting and no plot holes, I like it. <<less

I can say that it is worth seeing.

The characters don't seem too flat to me and the setting of the world (now overrun by monsters) doesn't feel annoying or unimportant.

It reminds me of a Manwha with more or less the same monster premise but better.

I can recommend it if you don't have much to see and are looking for options.

Although there are still more chapters to watch to see how it continues to develop, you can entertain yourself with the ones that are there.

This is a decent novel with an interesting premise. The characters are fine and world building is limited so far.

The novel is about the world getting invaded by monsters while our MC, awakens as a chef in the military. He gradually starts strengthening his unit and faces the perils of the world together.

Pretty standard hunter stuff with some twist. Translation and writinf quality are fine too. It's a decent read 8.7/10

It is a pretty cool novel that mixes post-apocalyptic vibes with a unique twist. The main dude, Sergeant Shin Young-joon, is a military chef who ends up in a monster-infested world right when he's about to finish his service.

The setting is pretty detailed and immersive, blending modern military stuff with fantasy elements like magic and mythical creatures. It's a nice change from the usual combat-heavy stories since the focus is on a chef. Shin Young-joon's cooking skills become super important for survival and morale, adding a unique spin to the... more>> plot.

Characters are well done, especially the main guy. He's relatable, smart, and compassionate, making him an interesting lead. The side characters are also diverse and add depth to the story.

However, the detailed world-building might feel a bit much sometimes, and the pacing can be slow. Some parts of the plot might drag a little, and the detailed descriptions are a little too much.

All in all, "is a good read if you're into post-apocalyptic stories with a unique angle. 4/5 <<less

It's quite fun guys although I read the raws with mtl lol

Alright, for me the premise is interesting. You got an MC who's awakened as a Cook in a destroyed world. Now, how can a mere Cook become strong in this world? Of course with food!

Now, don't get me started but the aspect of being a foodie is not really the thing that kept the novel going. It's more like how the food become the abilities + plot armours for MC to survive.

I liked that despite having 'arguably' the most... more>> fraudulent skill, MC is not fully omnipotent. Yeah he's strong but being a production class do have limitations (You'll see in the late chapters why)

So he's OP, but there's limit of what he can do alone. MC is the strongest when he have his comrades by his side.

Let's talk about what I liked the most from this novel. The PLOT.

Tbh it's really good. Every arc is progressing really smooth from one to another. I can tell that the author have planned the plot beforehand. I like the progress of how MC and his group become stronger are not glossed over. So when you read it, you feel like also growing with them. Though I must say, I kinda feel the pace is a little too slow in certain arcs. Overall I like the plot, bcs up until where I read there's still so much left to uncover.

CHARACTERS, well it's decent I guess. MC is kinda bit annoying for sometimes. Hmm, it's hard to explain it but, he's so fickle lol. At one time he can be quite cruel, and another a big pushover. He's not dumb alright, he actually can make rational decisions but the way he reasons when doing something is kinda trivial and childish sometimes. I just think that his personality doesn't exists in this modern time, even more when remembering that he's in torn destroyed world. Ehh, but I guess this aspects can be overlooked since he's not an a**hole.

Right, the side characters. Almost forgot. They're okay, I suppose? I don't feel attached to them, just like the MC. I mean, it's great that they are there to support MC. Srsly, whether they die or something I don'r really care. I'm fine as long the plot goes on.

WORLDBUILDING, it's great. It's really hard for me to explain but I think so far the worldbuilding has been superb.

Soo yeah, it's a great read. Pls give it a try. <<less

Thank you for the endless dedication to update this manhwa.

I like how the story is progressing and how it has a different twist for a post apocalyptic plot. I admire their discipline as soldiers and how quickly they adapted to survival rather than thinking about saving everyone. I like how the MC imposes that every survivor civilian should earn their keep and not just be a burden to the soldiers.

Hopefully someone awakens with an item storage box so they can put all their haul in it without worry.

excited to see... more>> where they will decide to settle. Would they choose to go back and regroup in the mountain base or settle elsewhere...

Eagerly awaiting for the next update.. <<less

It starts off a bit slow, but once the story picks up its pace, it reveals the brilliance of the hidden gem that it is.

This is a Kingdom/Guild building story, where the protagonist is intelligent and empathetic. He is truly a kind guy, but he recognizes the weight of his position as a leader and is willing to get his hands dirty if necessary. His chef skills are interesting and he uses them cleverly. The secondary characters are memorable; they might seem unremarkable at first, but gradually, their uniqueness and... more>> personalities are better exposed and developed as the story progresses. I strongly recommend this novel, even to readers who usually dislike kingdom building, because it has many "weak to strong" and lit RPG element. <<less

It's pretty good so far. Main character is put into a supportive leadership role where he needs other people so he isn't just steamrolling everyone else solo because he's op. A concern I have for possible future chapters and something I'm beginning to see already is how basically no one has died since the initial monster attack.

I’ve just finished the latest chapter and am anticipating more uploads.

The story has a good pace, letting the plot unfold at a steady speed. I especially like how the characters develop gradually; this adds depth and makes their growth feel real.

Pls. Upload more chapters. 😊
