But that pain can't compare to the sorrow I felt when I saw him kneeling for my sake.

Dongfang Bubai's Reborn Yang Lianting is about an infamous s*umbag pursuing his invincible wife again and anew.

-This review contains minor spoilers-

This novel contains mentions of self-mutilation, mu*der, infidelity and dubious consent. Please don't read it, if you aren't comfortable with these topics.

"Greetings to the Cult Master!"

Dongfang Bubai, lit. Invincible East, is the master of the Sun Moon Holy Cult. To maintain his position, he forces the congregation to consume poison pills. He mutilated himself to learn the skills in the Sunflower Manual and is the most powerful martial artist of his time. However, cultivating the manual causes his nature to change.

Yang Lianting is a lowly handyman working atop Blackwood Cliff. He is not a good person and doesn't think of himself as one either. He intends to right past wrongs, but doesn't succeed just because he wants to. He repeatedly hurts the one he loves, yet remains by his side in both their past and present lifetimes. Yang Lianting tries to redeem himself by letting go of his desire for power and position, by disregarding societal norms, and most importantly by treating Dongfang well.

The novel focuses on Dongfang Bubai and Yang Lianting, who fall in love with each other across two lifetimes. It is 66 chapters long and concisely written, with each chapter the two gradually grow closer. Their relationship progresses from master and servant to married couple as they build mutual trust and learn to express their love for each other. The ending resolves their conflicting lifetimes with a plot twist that matches their characters.

The novel is written from Yang Lianting's perspective, as such the reader is mostly limited to his view. He connects past and present events whenever he gets caught up in his memories. Certain connections and inconsistencies in narration are often brought up again in later chapters.

Though the plot is primarily about the two main characters and the hurdles they face, the various side characters liven up the scenes. Including the gruff Tong Baixiong, scheming Zuo Lengchan, and money-grubbing Monk Huiming.

Revenge isn't the main focus of the plot, but connects the characters together. Prior to the novel, Dongfang Bubai usurped Ren Woxing's position as cult master. Justification for the characters' actions depends on perspective. It's not a question of good vs evil, rather both sides want to take revenge against the opposing side. From Ren Yingying's pov, she tries to save her father from an unscrupulous traitor. From Yang Lianting's pov, he acts against a scheming superior to live peacefully.

In fact, all of Blackwood Cliff agrees that even the 'good' Righteous Path consists of a bunch of hypocrites, much less the 'evil' Sun Moon Holy Cult, where one can get killed in the blink of an eye. However, the heavens decide over one's fate and committing evil in excess may lead to karmic retribution.

---

In case these names sound familiar, that's because this fanfiction takes place around ten years before the events of Jin Yong's Smiling, Proud Wanderer. Prior knowledge isn't necessary to read this novel. However, the first chapter can be confusing because a lot of information is introduced at once. If you want to read up on their 'past life, ' I recommend taking a look at chapters 30 and 31 of Smiling Proud Wanderer.

Unlike Jin Yong's work, this novel is not a Wuxia epic with countless colorful characters and expansive worldbuilding. This novel is main character-centric, the side characters and antagonists have little screen time, as such they are underdeveloped in comparison. Dongfang Bubai and Yang Lianting's characters are consistent throughout, but can be hit-or-miss depending on your preferences. Furthermore, for a Wuxia novel the fight scenes between martial arts experts and the scheming between sects are minimal at best.

First of all, Why did 3 people rate this novel 1 star when only few chapters are tled??? Did they even read the novel or are they against danmei?? I didn't want to rate or review this novel until I read at least 10-15 chapters but I personally think this novel absolutely doesn't deserve this kind of low rating at all.

As of now my rating is a 4 star but these 1 star rating kinda passed me of so I'm giving it a 5 star.

Since I didn't read Smiling, Proud Wanderer, I didn't grasp the plot perfectly. I'm not familiar with the characters, especially other characters since they aren't introduced properly yet so I'll only talk about both main characters. If you are thinking of reading this novel then please... more>> go through the tags, Translator's warning plus the carrd. The translator has done an awesome job with the translation and infos.

Now, to the review:

Spoiler

Yang Lianting (MC) is the seme/gong and Dongfang Bubai (ML) is the uke/shou

What I understood up till now is that Yan Lianting, a lowly commoner guard used various means to get close to Dongfang Bubai, the cult master for fame & power. He used Dongfang Bubai, hurt him in every possible ways one could again and again then left him like a used good. Even so Dongfang Bubai is the most important person in his life in both past & present. I kinda understand his reasons because in a world like that, where the weak are stepped on by the strong, he needed power to withstand. But does this excuse his mistreatment of Dongfang Bubai? NO!

Yang Lianting is a scum, he used Dongfang Bubai, treated him cruely, disregarded his love, kept lover outside just because Dongfang Bubai couldn't give him children. He got closer and closer to Dongfang Bubai until ML couldn't get out of his trap. (I don't know what else he did since I haven't read that far). Tbh I really hate him ad probably can't forgive his actions but at present he's a changed man. Since the novel has given him a second chance then I'll wait and see how far he can go with his reborn self.

As for Dongfang Bubai— he's what you call a person with sharp tongue but soft heart. In the past, Dongfang Bubai loved him despite everything Yang Lianting did to him. He even changed his original voice into a high pitched girlish sound just because Yang Lianting didn't like his original voice and ridiculed it. If this isn't devotion then Idk what is!!! Since this novel is from Yang Lianting's pov I'm not yet clear about Dongfang Bubai's character.

[collapse]

Please do give this novel a chance and please don't rate it 1 star without reading!!!

This novel is basically a fanfiction of Smiling, Proud Wanderer. I think the author really loves this Yang Lianting character and wanted to give him a different future, where he reflects on his actions and learns how to cherish his loved ones. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO READ THE TAGS AND WARNINGS BEFORE READING!!! DON'T READ THE NOVEL IF YOU'RE NOT COMFORTABLE WITH THE WARNINGS/TAGS!!! <<less

This is essentially a fanfic wish fulfillment book for one of the saddest couples in The smiling, proud wanderer. There is quite a bit of repetition (I wonder if it sounds better in Chinese). However, that sets up a lyrical quality to the story, and definite personality for the characters. The translation is also amazing, with miticulous footnotes whenever the story references the original book.

Dongfang Bubai's Yang Lianting is like a knife hidden in a fluffy cushion.

The male lead quickly falls in love with the protagonist and the following chapters are filled with fluff. However, from time to time Yang Lianting remembers their past life. His memories disrupt the romantic interactions and reveal the tragedy hidden beneath the surface, which he keeps from Dongfang Bubai.

The present may be sweet but the past is bitter.

About the final ~10 chapters:

Spoiler

My favorite chapters are 59 to 61. Dongfang Bubai's pov of the past is heartbreaking to read. Though the next few chapters were comparably mediocre, chapter 66 was a great resolution to the novel. I went back and skimmed through chapter 48 onward. The hints and the red herrings were there. Dongfang Bubai keeping silent about remembering their past life for over a year (!) just to keep Yang Lianting happy, fits his character too well.

I’m not entirely sure how I feel about this novel if I’m being honest. I was rooting for the s*um gong to change his ways and be better for Dongfang Bubai in the beginning, but once I realized what had happened in the past and how horribly he (mc) had treated him (DB), I was just hoping that Bubai would give him (mc) a harder time. I believe unconditional love is beautiful, but only when your conditions have been met. While I do like the novel, I just can’t get... more>> over what happened in the previous life.

Spoiler

how lingfang had basically imprisoned Bubai in a courtyard underneath the cliff he went to train at was just disrespectful and demeaning for him (Bubai). At that point, I was really feeling for Bubai and was cursing at Lingfang for being a slag gong. And when we find out that Lingfang slept around with multiple beauties because he was such a coward that he didn’t want to admit that he liked Bubai... ! Forget about it, I was basically begging Bubai to cry, get mad, run away, throw a fit, something!!! But noooooo. But then, then!! We find out that Bubai had known all along about all of this and was willingly kept and ab*sed by said slag gong! The dog blood drama had be choking in anger and I wrote off both Bubai and Lingfang. After all, it takes two to tango. While I hurt for Bubai, he had encouraged Lingfang’s behavior and was too much of a doormat, which was how they spent an entire lifetime without ever realizing that Lingfang actually felt the same way. It’s too much guys, I’m dying.

[collapse]

Annoyingly enough, the plot is mostly smooth sailing for the MC and Bubai being such a doormat made me choke in anger. The beginning is my favorite, because you don’t know how badly the MC messed up, but the end is really bittersweet. Don’t say I didn’t warn you, and feel free to disagree with me too. After all, this is just me writing my own thoughts on the book la~.

(also, is this not based on another series? I came across Dongfang Bubai in another novel and apparently he’s a big figure associated with homosexuality. His background is the exact same as the novel and it seems like this book is an ending that someone else wrote like a fan fiction because his ending was too pitiful) <<less

READ THIS!!!

It’s sooo good. I didn’t even realize this is a fix it fanfiction lmao. But I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s one of my favorite wife chasing novel. Of course our main character has done some f*cked up things to our ML but you can truly feel he is remorseful and want to repent.

The fluff and dog food goes really well with the angsty flashbacks you get. Which makes the fluff like really good aftercare. Read this if you want a good mix of dog food and angst. There wasn’t... more>> any point of the novel that felt boring even though the main characters got together early on in the novel. It’s well paced and interesting <<less

I love stories like this. MC gets a second chance to pay back the ML who he harmed previously. This is surprisingly short which is pretty nice, so far the focus is on the MC & ML developing a relationship. There's mentions of possible future conflict with a righteous sect, but I'm unsure that'll ever be focused on, and I'm ok with that.

The MC & ML are not good people. The ML was s*um obsessed with gaining power and petty. The ML is moody and mu*ders people when angry. It's... more>> mentioned he only became like this because of his cultivation technique, which is pretty sad. He gained strength but lost control of himself left to always be lonely because everyone is scared of him.

Now, I'm probably overthinking this, but MC repeatedly reflects on his first life with ML, and he's straight up s*um (though the ML giving into all his demands is concerning and awful) and yet. He remembers everything ML likes, and knows ML well enough to understand what ML's thinking. This makes me wonder how the ML viewed their first life together. Would their past together come off differently in his view?

Anyway, this is short and worth checking out if you're a sucker for this type of premise. Just, it's pretty internal and calm so far which may not work for everyone. The translators doing a great job! <<less

DNF DNF DNF aka I can't read this any more!

Spoiler

This novel can be compared to 2HA, as in both the MC (gong) used to be bad to the ML (shou) in his past life, but then gets reincarnated as his past self, from before he's done all that evil, and gets to redo it all, making it up to the person he loves.

Sounds like Dongfang (...) should therefore be an interesting read, no? Well, it isn't, however much I wanted it to be.

Firstly, the MC - Yang Lianting (YLT) - and this is the most angering difference between it and 2HA - used to be a real s*umbag to DFB (Dongfang Bubai) in his past life *despite knowing perfectly well DFB was in love with him*. In fact, YLT banked on it, milking it for all its worth, with absolutely no regard for DFB's wellbeing/feelings/sanity. Reading him recount the past it took me haf the novel just to get past my dislike of this character.

Secondly, Dongfang. Sadly, however badass he were, it is all being annihilated by The Power of Shou. Because he might be the most powerful cultivator in the world, cruel and cunning, but we have to remember he IS a shou. God forbid he has a strong, commanding presence! He is supposed to be the weak *woman* after all! Therefore, whenever LYT is nearby, he flips a switch and instantly the ONLY adjectives that the narrator deems to describe Dongfang with are: submissive, meek, with limpid eyes, watery eyes, hazy eyes, expression covered with a layer of watery vapour, soft body, suple body, thin frame, thin waist, fragile body... it goes on and ON. And then on top of that, you get literal paragraphs every few pages like clockwork describing how stunningly beautiful dongfang is. Over. and. over. and OVER. again.

Thirdly, if you were to extract all the paragraphs talking about nothing but Dongfang's beauty, ones musings on their undying love for the other, their mutual declarations of love and romantic promises, as well as LYT's self face-slapping about how badly he treated Dongfang in his past life.. over and over (I mean, deservededly so, don't get me wrong, but reading this over and over every few pages.. it gets old FAST).. if you remove ALL of that, then I don't know if this novel would be half as long as it is. Perhaps even less. The sheer amount of text I skimmed over is just ridiculous and still I felt irritated reading repetetive tripe dialogue over and over again.

So at some point I just couldn't take it any more, couldn't keep reading just to be able to mark it as "read" on my kindle app.. enough time wasted.

So, if you're hesitant, just give it a few chapters. If you find the novel irritating as I had, feel free do drop it, secure in the knowledge that it does NOT, in fact, get better.

It's great that I gave it a try. This novel has some potential. Just that the plot is straightforward redemption and I liked the CP. I love the MC Dongfeng Bubai, he is so innocent in love, and his passion and love for ML are so pure, I used "pure" because I don't know which words are suitable to describe his love for ML, and the writer wanted to portray.

Deny in last life, accept in this life, betrayed in last life, and loyal to this life is the role ML... more>> played. I loved the way ML was trying everything to make up for the last time.

They tried their best in this lifetime and that's good enough.

★★★★☆ [3.5/5 stars]

I should have rated this novel higher than this because it really has great potential. After reading 'The Wife is First', I was looking for novels with the same theme of 'redemption after rebirth' or something. I love to see that kind of sweet angst, the way either the MC or ML regrets being a s*um in their past life and try to redeem themselves in the next life and become a doting and caring lover. This novel considered to be what I was looking for. But you... more>> know my problem with this novel? The narration ended up being so repetitive and I actually felt frustrated about it.

I swear, almost every chapter, you'll be able to read the same narration of 'I hurt him in the past life, fortunarely I was given a chance to start over again', 'I was a scum, how could I have not seen how precious he was', 'He was cold and cruel on the outside but his heart is soft, I should have noticed it and treasure him' and many more along those lines. Like, for real! You've already mentioned it for how many times, you don't have to repeat it every single time. It dampened the emotional scenes a few times. But if I chose to close my eyes and ignore that problem, the story itself is actually good. I liked how the MC (seme protagonist) really see what's more important for him after experiencing his past life (which is his beloved Cult Master) and try to compensate by being a deserving partner for him. This novel wasn't focused on the revenge to those who killed them in the past life, but on their relationship and how he was going to manage it without repeating what happened back then.

This novel is still worth picking up, but I really felt frustrated to the point of skimming some chapters. It has only 66 chapters (which I considered pretty short) so it won't take too much of your time. It was not deep, plot-wise, but more focused on the character development and it was still good. <<less

The author tends to repeat themselves but other than that, the story is really good. I like the CPs depth of feelings for each other and the internal conflicts that they go through. They are definitely not one-dimensional characters whose psychology doesn't match their actions.

It's worth reading.

What a wonderful book! Absolute page turner from the first word to the last.

Oh dear, I think it has become my favorite.

So we're dealing with a reborn ML who regrets how he treated the MC in their previous life and sets out to make up for it. And does. Not too much dog blood, not too much OP, just straight up strong love through out. (Too much love infact. But I'm not complaining.)

So yeah, translation and grammar and all that were on point. I'm glad I read this at... more>> a time it had already been completely translated. <<less

Loving how it was more about them thank actual revenge. It is nice to get a a gong reincarnation instead once in a while and see things from his points of view.

The story was short and simple with none of the unnecessary background or total misunderstanding.

i loved this story so very much. It was moving and the love between the MC and ML was everlasting. Throughout the novel, you get the perspective of both the MC and ML therefore creating a deeping understanding of both characters as the story progressed. Thanks for the hard work translating~

This was a 9//10 for me I only wish there was more smut hehe. There's only one good scene but it was really intense hot that It kept me satisfied. LOL.

There is a very sad and serious undertones that I kept thinking the worst. Like one person was going to have to trade their life for the other, and then they would have to wait till another life before they could be together.

Don't think like me hahah it's a happy ending. I just wish I... more>> got to see even more when they were both gray haired. So I could have been more at peace. But they already had their talk out and other misunderstandings were cleared.

overall, I have to say, this was phenomenal pacing. I wasn't bored. And a gong protagonist always Has me hooked. So this is a good read I recommend. <<less

Please read this novel it'll replenish your soul and make you regret not reading it earlier.

So honestly I didn't have high hopes because I don't read or enjoy wuxia novels, so when I started it I was quite reluctant but man was I wrong, it's an exceptional and a must read novel. It does features somethings about the wuxia world but they are fully explained by the translator and are easy to understand. (So shy away because of this)

The story focuses mainly on the character development of the MC,... more>> Yang Lianting, and his turbulent past actions. He really won my heart in his present life but was really fvking tr*sh in his past one. The ML, Dongfang Bubai, is portrayed as a cold aloof guy when he actually is a good natured person on the inside, with an inferiority complex, I love him too and my heart aches for this dude. All the plot points are completely explained (Sometimes in the later chapters) in the novel with none left unexplained.

The MC and ML were such a beautiful and lovable couple, I really appreciate the way they were written and portrayed. Their dynamic was filled with beauty and tenderness. You should definitely prepare a box of tissues cause they're definitely gonna be needed. <<less

A sweet and heart aching story. The plot is very reassuring, the characters are developed deeply and thoroughly.

Felt a bit like a "husky and shizun", the same premise, still, that isn't a disadvantage.

I need to see more fix-it fanfiction for classic stories now. This was frankly awesome. Really enjoyed reading it and then reading the source material chapters, it was absolutely chilling. I can see why this author was so captivated by them as to make a fan story, there's definitely mysteries and dramatic untold personal histories in the original text.

My advice is to not read this as a standalone story as I first did, it's really much more satisfying with the original tragic mess for context.

+1 to the writer, I also... more>> became obsessed with Dongfang Bubai after seeing those two small chapters. And I'm so glad Tsubaki decided to translate it so I can broaden my knowledge of wuxia genre! And thank you so, so much for providing all of the context that makes me appreciate this read so much more.

As for the actual rebirth... I think his description of why he behaved like that at the end makes sense, but not the rest of it. However, the intention of this story is for sequel wish fulfillment to change the original narrative to be sweeter, and it does that very effectively in my opinion. I personally could have used more struggle, groveling, and face-slapping before they finally really got together, but I also understand that the author very clearly wanted a sweetened love story and so that's what they wrote. There's a place for that kind of narrative too after the emotional exhaustion of the context.

This is one of those stories I find myself thinking about a couple months after I read it, so I felt obligated to give a 5 star review. What stands out in my memory isn't dull wording or how awful everyone is (evil cult, hellooo) ; it's the emotions and story beats and appreciation for the author's clear feelings. <<less
