Clearing an Isekai with the Zero-Believers Goddess – The Weakest Mage among the Classmates (WN)

Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

Makoto Takatsuki is a normal high school student and a hardcore RPG player.

However, “normal” goes out the window when his whole class is involved in a bus crash and whisked away to another world! Powerful gods rule this strange new land of magic and monsters, and every newcomer is blessed with strong stats and unique skills.

Well, not quite. Makoto’s stats turn out to be pathetic, and his skills are super weak compared to his classmates’…he’s even stuck as an apprentice mage. Worse still, he’s given only ten years to live!

Luckily, Makoto soon meets a minor goddess named Noah, who appears in Makoto’s dreams and asks him to become her first believer. With the help of Noah’s blessings and a divine weapon, Makoto seeks to become strong enough to rescue his goddess from the dungeon where she’s been trapped.

By training hard and using his weak skills in unorthodox ways, Makoto proves that, even when playing on hardcore difficulty, an RPG player always makes it to the end!

Am I missing something?

The main character does not make clever use of his meager strength. He hasn't done a single clever thing since the very first fight in the story. Every fight since then has increasingly been "drown my opponent with a massive, overwhelming quantity of water because I forgot every single one of the other literal hundreds of applications of the most versatile classical element". Even something as simple as the high-velocity water bullets are off the table, and you better forget about optical refraction, body puppeting, manipulating poisons... more>> and other liquids, weaponized osmotic pressure, rapid phase change, sound generation, expedited healing, combining mist with optical refraction and water clones for convincing fakes, complex ice sculpting, forcing water into a target's lungs and then creating ice blades from the inside, maximizing flow friction to generate massive heat... even the mildly clever things he did at the start of the story (mist, icicle spears, chilling a target) haven't been used in over a hundred chapters. As a theorycrafter, it's frustrating.

The haremettes are likeable and relatively three dimensional, but the main character is so aggressively donkan that his relationship with them hasn't changed in any way since they joined his party, in spite of their best efforts to the contrary. Worse, artificial and contrived coincidences have started appearing to maintain the status quo, which is a pretty clear indication that the author has no intention of changing this and also one of the hallmarks of bad character writing.

It's to the point where I legitimately do not understand what all the 5 star reviewers are seeing. Am I missing something? Does a massive plot twist happen in (another) 100 chapters and the protagonist suddenly becomes five times smarter, learns how to express his emotions like a normal human being, and decides to actually acknowledge the feelings of all the girls falling in love with him?

Don't get me wrong, this story is pretty well written, and the characters are at least less flat than you'd see in most Isekai. In fact, I would actively recommend this story if you just removed the current MC and had his childhood friend or merchant friend take that role instead. I just don't understand what people are reading the current story for, given the absolute lack of anything resembling romance, a villain worth mentioning, or an even mildly creative fight scene. <<less

Here is my problem with this novel. I am actually a fan of weak protagonists overcoming adversities, so I had high expectations when I started reading this. That concept is nice when the level gap is at a reasonable distance. You can't keep, though, your protagonist too weak for over 100 chapters with no substantial growth, especially when allies and enemies keep on becoming stronger. Although the MC has somehow found means to fight against his enemies over the course of the story, the only reason he does well until... more>> now is that his enemies are too s*upid and because of the plot armor.

Spoiler

In reality, even goblins can kill him with a well-planned surprise attack, and the reason is simple. Except for his elementary water magic, the powers of the MC are all based on external factors. In other words, his power is too inconsistent, and most importantly, he requires too much time to prepare his magic, or else he can't deal damage to anything because of his pathetic stats. I believe the author didn't want to put the assassin's profession in the novel exactly for this reason. The most absurd thing for me is when he tries to gather the spirits and prepare for his spells. His enemies usually are just watching him, idle.

[collapse]

Well, I don't like to be unfair, so I'll keep reading it for a while, hoping it will get better. I have other complaints too, especially regarding the characters, but I'll leave it to that. <<less

This novel is truly one of my favorites, it's not one of the cliche novels where the MC will beat the demon king and then find another purpose (or reverse), no, this novel is truly different. When you read the story there are many points where you'd get goosebumps at some times, at the beginning you'd think that the story is very cliche, but as you go on you'll get suprised at how many plot-twists there are. I've read many novels, where there are gods and demon kings, but this... more>> one has overwhelmed me with the world building. It gets one very excited of the future developments of this series.
Spoiler

Even though the plot is good, there will probably come times when you will question yourself about the decisions the MC makes sometimes, I mean in some moments the MC makes choices which are hardly manageable, any person that would have his sanity would question his decisions, but well, for the MC, those decisions that are shown to him by his RPG-Player skill are nothing more than opportunities, so long there is the possibily of him succeding, he'd accept. Most of the actions he does are either for the safety of his friends or to finish the requests of the godess. For me personally I like this MC, he cares for his friends very much, isn't an ret*rded MC, has for himself his own trump-card which have saved him many times.

[collapse]

The only problem with this series would probably be the power system, which is hardly explained in this world, it is a bit different then other power scale systems so the author should have given us more infos on other peoples stats, but the only statements which are given to us by the author are: "she has hero-like physically" or "high mana". The stats of others were never shown (the numerical digits), only the skills and everything else would've been described with, as I said statements. I personally don't have a problem with it because most of the times the skills would decide the outcome of an fight.

I don't want to spoiler you much, so just read it, it's worthy of your time. <<less

The MC is the best. He does not rush immediately like some hot blooded freak who can't use head.. He uses the situation best and knows his limit (I really like smart mc). But he is crazy in a different sence. The heroines have their own personality. The more u read the more u will like..

Well, it's not some kind of exiled drama novel but the hero admired the MC even before transfer.. Actually their duo is the best...

Now currently all the pieces are fitting together.. Can't wait to read... more>> next....... <<less

Okay, I will admit I checked this out because of the high ratings and boy was I surprised. No, it wasn't because the story was brilliantly original, no this story takes a bunch of tropes and somehow manages to tell a compelling story. And most of all I really like the MC. Again, in the beginning, he's like a typical game otaku but as we slowly get to see more of him, his character and personality become more fleshed out. He is entirely the reason why I like this novel... more>> so much.

Now let me address some of the concerns/problems the other reviewers have made. (Also I came across one that was extremely judgemental. He came to read a novel expecting something and when he didn't get what he wanted, he just left a review criticising everything. Like what is that? Every novel I read, I don't get blinded by the tags. I read to see what the author has in store for us and prepare to give him a chance.)

Yes. This novel has a harem. For some this a big turn off, and the opposite for others. I am indifferent to it, as long as the relationships were done well. And indeed, I like all of the characters. They have a unique flavor to them lol. Also, this has a dense MC and it might frustrate you a little but the author uses it for a lot of small funny scenes. But don't worry as this isn't focused on romance, hehehe it works itself out. Can't say more otherwise it will become a spoiler.

Another point to make- the isekai world has a level and class system like your typical game. Again some will like the stats based litrpg style novels while some don't. I just read 20 in a row before this novel so I was beginning to get sick of it but this novel doesn't bore you down with all the tiny details. And I think I prefer it that way. There is no stat sheet or anything, and it gives the world a more magical feel. Not everything can be quantised like our MC.

Also someone complained about the Goddess and why she chose him. It's part of the story, and the author explains why as the plot progresses.

In the end, just give it a try. I really like it for its simplicity. The MC may be a bit dense but his heart is in the right place and that's all that matters in the end. Don't come expecting greatness or epic plotlines, no that will disappoint you. This is like that cool refreshing glass of water you drink at the end of a hot day. ;) <<less

Honestly its all good, lives up to its high rating. Harem is in okay amount (so far). It feels kinda like Danmachi except the goddess is being sealed up and not on direct contact with you.

Some downsides are, just like somebody mentioned. Stats almost never being mentioned other than magic proficiency and skill, basic stats like Mana, HP, etc never shows up (or maybe it did, I just didnt remember).

All in all, I like this one and might recommend this to someone that is new to light novels and/or isekai

08/03/2022 (dd/mm/yyyy) Edit : After catching up with the author, well this one has its up and down. Mainly close to the end of arc 10 where the author seems to be rushing things, and the beginning of arc 11 where the progression seems like not making sense. But it's not down so bad that makes me want to drop it. I still like it, though there's still some stuff I don't like on how it ends on arc 10. It's still a nice, enjoyable read. Though romance still could get more attention. <<less

Ok so let me start this by saying I think this novel is a 4.5 or 4 rather than a 5 but since there's people who voted 1 or 2 I wanna even it.

I'd also like to say that if you came to read even a lick of romance go read a different novel. The romance in this entire novel is what would happen in middle school and it's not even that the MC is a full on wuss it's just that they were so busy doing other sh*t that... more>> the people in the story just didnt focus on that not the author which is another reason I'd give this a 4 star. Actual romance appears really late (200+ chapters in) not to say there isn't any little bits and pieces along the way but still. Also I very much dislike Furiae she is a so called tsundere with not really any affection for the MC until the very end even though the MC knows how she feels and she understands that she is shitty towards him nothing changes, along with still holding some type of feeling for his childhood friend until the last arc which is wack as f*ck. All in all a good story where I was rooting for the goddesses rather than the heroines since they were all too scared or/and too busy (except Anna and gerald's sister) other than that a really good adventure story with twists and turns all around with some arc more boring and others very entertaining. Read if you don't want that much romance and want to focus on adventure... screw this novel I should give it two stars for wasting my time. There was plenty of time within the last 50 chapters for the MC to go on dates but he either trains or his heroine party members are out yuriing and adventuring without him. This might as f*cking well be yaoi... his friends all get married have children go on dates while MC does all this other sh*t on his own accord but still waste of time. <<less

It's a mediocre story. It's your generic isekai fantasy of a weak guy getting stronger. There are decent elements of story telling and non-generic stuff but man is the romance in this story your most generic Japanese dense harem main protagonist sh*t ever. I gave it a read because I was bored and it seemed alright and I decided to look at reviews and look at the ones left by people left who read further ahead than me. Apparently even after 300 chapters, MC still haven't done it with the... more>> main heroines yet despite in the most recent chapters I read literally kissing him, confessing to the MC, and having them pounce on him in the bed during night about to initiate a threesome only to be c*ckblocked by someone who magicked them to sleep because they were being too loud. You telling me that in almost 200 more chapters later that it still doesn't progress any further than this? I don't know why JP novels love this whole let's give a dense MC a harem which is looked down upon in modern society but still try to do it in a way that doesn't make the MC look like a sleezebag trope.

To people who don't know this trope or haven't watched much JP anime or read much JP novels, this is probably fine and is a decent novel but for people more familiar with this stuff, don't bother reading it. The world building is decent and story elements are alright but a significant part of the story is how the dense MC interacts with his love interests and it will get real old. I came to the reviews hoping to proven wrong about this trope and maybe MC finally grew some balls but nope, the review of people with over 300 chapters read still are having this issue. Thus, I'm dropping this. <<less

Overall this is a slow moving but great story. I would have given it 4-5 stars but the Neutron Star MC and his V-Card that has plot armor that's even denser than the MC are why I marked it down. After 300+ chapters of it, such antics are just old and annoying. The world-building is reasonably done, there's character growth, the overall story is interesting, etc. But man has the MC's interactions with the heroines gotten old and painful by the point.

This novel can be a master piece. If the author developing the character properly (not just develop the MC power). To not make thing complicated, I will summarize a bit. The MC (Makoto) are diligent but dense (at understanding woman) and slow (at taking a quick decision). He have so many life and death journey before. But it's does not change how he is and in my opinion. It's useless to have so many experience, if the MC does not show his growth.

Story's great and the world-building and character-building is top notch. This is one of the best gems you'll ever find in the web novel world! I am also grateful to the translator for providing accurate translations. The plot might seem generic at first (isekai, harem, weak to strong) but it really isn't. Even though the story encompasses everything that any decent web novel would do with those genres/tags, it also adds in tons of its own plot twists. Oosaki Isle is an amazing author. Just give the novel a try,... more>> but I warn you that the plot can be a bit slow (but just the right amount) at times.

Tldr;

Basically, this is a novel for anyone who likes

  • isekai
  • weak to strong protag
  • harem with actual romance
  • un-cliche endings
  • good translations
  • amazing world-building
  • a protag that you can actually relate to
  • good character backgrounds and character-building
  • decently long-enough chapters

This is a great story, not that perfection, but it gives you a feel that different compare to others. The author doesn't use the old method of building an fantasy world like other novel, he gives us a world kinda feel like our own, a world without bunch of stat showing up everywhere, a world where we can see it through the eye of the main character. The story flow really good, with some bumper minus event. But I think he already fix it in the LN version.

Don't be hesited... more>> by the bad review, it just doesn't fit their taste and give 1 star like a crying baby. If your an real reader, this novel cant be that bad to give 1 star, believe me, I have seen the worst. And this is not that worst.

Well, just give it a try, it a slow and heartwarming story, useful for those seeking a good story to get off the stress at the end of the day. <<less

After reading light novels for over a decade and a half, this finally happened. I finally found a light novel terrible enough to justify creating an account to review it.

This review will address the beginning of the story only. If you're not a patient reader and dislike boring content, I would skim over the first 50 to even 100 chapters; nothing important happens here. The beginning of the story is characterized by endless complaining, edgy-as-f*ck monologues, POV changes that make no chronicle sense, and worst of all, no world-building.

The novel... more>> provides absolutely no standard as to what is considered powerful. Where exactly does level 60 place you? How many elements are there? What weapons are there? Which Gods exists? How do the dungeons function? What does the continent look like? This is the first novel that I have ever read that has managed to completely fail to answer even one of these basic questions. On top of this, time skips are frequent and jarring; in the first 10 chapters, there is a skip of an entire year and one of three months, each explaining nothing about the main character has been doing, leaving only a "he got stronger lol" as an explanation. There is a total disconnect from what is happening in the world, and any attempts at foreshadowing are placed so terribly that reader is more likely to skip the section entirely instead of trying to read ten pages of completely new terms and no explanation.

He is a hard worker. This means absolutely nothing. The main character actually has no fixed personality whatsoever. He inherently is very emotional and expresses himself quite openly. However, for whatever reason, he decides to contradict his own personality forcefully instead of recognizing his own flaws as a person; in other words, he is only a hard worker because his skill forces him to be one regardless of his power level. He never really expresses a desire for power or for anything really, and this quality makes for a very bland and filler read.

Finally, the grammar is flat out one of the worst I've ever had the displeasure of witnessing; sentence structure and chronological events just don't exist apparently. Trying to read this is like trying to unravel the earbuds that you stuffed in your pockets without sight, touch, or a functioning frontal cortex. I regret every second I spent on this garbage. <<less

I want to put 3/5 but for some reason I cannot.

Tldr; The romance goes nowhere. The growth is purly about gaining power and not about using it well or strategically, except in the very beginning. It becomes all about who can use more brute force. There is no character growth from anyone in any form. The big exciting moments get the chair pulled out from under them and become very unsatisfying. The good thing about this book are the few power trip scenes that actually sound cool, and that's about... more>> it. Still, I read to ch 280, obviously it's got an interesting setting, but I'm just upset with how the author used that setting. So much missed potential.

[Before ch 75]

It has good development in the drama of hero vs villain, but terrible development in romance. I find myself wanting to keep reading to see where the plot goes, so it's definitely engaging.

As for the romance... honestly it got to the point where I had to convince myself MC was just pretending to be a clueless straight guy for the pride of the woman around him while he secretly hides that he is gay. Why did I have to convince myself of this? Because it is incredible irritating to read about the romantic moments otherwise. Typical isekai dense protagonist, except this one actually knows about their feelings and still acts dense on purpose, that's why I decided to believe he is secretly gay and is struggling to tell the girls around him about it. Of course the girls aren't much better, so I've also convinced myself a few of them are secretly lesbian but due to various reasons they have to try to be straight, unfortunately they just can't get into it so they keep struggling with it and create the awkward scenes we see. Honestly I could go into so much detail on the backgrounds I fabricated just to justify everyone's behavior in regards to romance, like prejudice or political motives, anything makes more sense than what the author gives you.

I know I ripped on the romance, but the story itself is interesting. As long as you can find a way to get through the irritating romance development, I say give this one a read.

[After ch 180]

It's a bottle of chiches. It has great moments, but everyone slowly devolved into idiots.
Spoiler

The sun country gave command of the army to the most biased character in the story, and yet there is no reasonable justification for it. What, because she can see the future? That's better as an advisor!

[collapse]

Oh and MCs character development I was hoping for? Doesn't happen. He remains the same near the end as he acted in the beginning. This is the character development so far:
Spoiler

Never gained any confident, never grew into the potion of the hero, never took responsibility for his 3 girlfriends (as of ch 180). No matter how much crazy stuff MC goes through, he still acts like a coward and idiot, I'm not joking.

[collapse]
Honestly, I predict it will follow that pattern for the rest of the story.

I finally realized this story isn't about the characters growing while overcoming adversity, like how it advertised by having a weak MC. They took the saying too seriously. They gain power after adversity, but that's all they gain. If that doesn't sound like a problem to you, then you may enjoy the novel. There's a hint about what I mean in the spoiler for the character development.

[After ch 280]

The author has no concept of build up. I'm sorry to say but so many things just had the air take out of them because the author, I presume, is writing what they want, not writing what will be entertaining. That's fine! If that's what they want, that's fine. I will say what they are good at though, impactful scenes. I imagine they had the idea of the scenes and made the story around that, a fairly common story for authors actually.
Spoiler

Like the goddesses. What happened to them being enemies? Now they are pretty much all buddy buddy. Yeah, I get that is a more realistic solution, to befriend the rulers of the world, but it makes a terrible story.

Was expecting a story that was copied from other Isekai's, but honestly? This was a GREAT read, at least for me. It's not perfect but I like it. One thing I have to commend the author with is how he is able to at least construct a plot twist that will happen in the far future and leave small details of hints through out the story (you guys will know what I'm talking about). It was fun to read and it honestly didn't feel old even after reading to 200+... more>> chapters. The MC is really likeable.

I was mostly expecting the to pull an Arifureta and make the Light Hero an insensitive a**hole, but no, he's just this chill and likeable guy who feels really stressed at his work and the politics at surround his position as a hero.

This novel went past my expectations. If you're thinking of reading this, do not drop it at the first volume since it might seem like the usual cliche web novel at the very beginning.

After reading to certain chapters you'll soon find this out,

The human relationship within the story is more reasonable than you think. There is no unfounded hostility between transported individuals, this includes even the goddess themselves so their interaction is quite interesting.

The characters are well written. Although not every character gets the same details as others, it's... more>> good enough that you can feel empathetic towards them, so there're some part that might touch your little dried up rotten heart.

That's some reminder for people that might drop this on the very first few chapters. <<less
