MC is my baby, he did nothing wrong, ever!

I'm currently in the process of reading this novel, but I believe I already have some thing to say about it. I will rewrite this review after finishing this novel.

I've finished the novel. My opinion as a whole did change, and I made some corrections in the review (in italic).

And I stand by the first statement: MC did nothing wrong. The only thing he can be blamed of is ruining his brother's (ML's) birthday party (mentioned in the description). But come on,... more>> it is such a little thing, and considering how his family treats him...

And imho, here is the worst part of this novel: MC's parents. The author tries to sit on two chairs: to make MC seem like a child who did things out of misunderstanding, and to make his parents a loving couple who would do everything for their children. The author succeeded only in one of those things.

Their parents consist of two cliches: a middle-aged father - a businessman who is a bit lazy, is preparing to leave his duties to his eldest son (ML) and evades his responsibility at every chance (to ML to carry them), and a Mother, who has even less personality, but she is a Mother and has Mother's Intuition (occasionally. Very occasionally).

Spoiler

In reality all, and I mean ALL of MC's actions are the consequence of them either keeping stuff from him or blatantly abandoning him. Him and ML. Hell, ML was responsible for raising MC from day one! I repeat: a nine-year-old child was left responsible for a toddler. What. The. f*ck?! Honestly, this right here is the reason why ML is like that: feeling responsible for everything and being bad at socializing. MC's relationship with his parents was never that close (with them never being there, lol), but then they had to go and f*ck everything up. The person MC was close to? The one he adored? The one who cared about him. His big bro. Once ML graduated from university, he was going to start his own company and take some time to spend with MC (who did not have close friends, was lonely and bullied). But the father fell ill and had to step from his duties. ML had to abandon his dreams of... living his own life, I guess? and start managing the company. Well, the father being ill and ruining his son's plans can't be blamed on him, but you know what can be? Forbidding everyone telling MC that he is ill. So imagine, you are literally a child, you are looking forward to spending time with your favorite person ever, but one day this person just abandons you, no explanation given. I don't know about you, but I am with MC: feeling abandoned and betrayed. (Also, remember that now the father is lazy and dumps his duties at every given chance? Yeah, he (unintentionally) ruined ML's dreams back then and does not feel a little bit of self-awareness about that and continues to ruin ML's plans now (when he is healthy). Father of the year, isn't he?). Some misunderstanding, huh? And of course, once MC learns of this he is feeling guilty of being so selfish and immature.

Also, the father is a bit a HUGE failure as a CEO: out of sentimentality he left his greedy brothers in a position of power. Those relatives fought with ML for control of the company and were a reason why MC died in the first timeline: the father caught them providing cheap materials for full price and instead of dealing with them here and there he left them in the company to do it again - that was the reason why the safety rope snapped and MC fell for his death. Businessman of the year, isn't he? The extra about the first life tells us that not only greedy relatives fought with ML, but the father himself also fought tooth and nail with ML on their side. Like, he was actively destabilizing his company for people who stole money and materials from this same company. And this is a story about MC, so we don't have a whole picture, but how many other people died because of bad equipment? The father was complicit of mu*der of countless people. At the end at the gravestone of the father ML was like "I sealed with them bc of what they did to [MC], I know you would understand my reasoning" because f*ck those nameless people who also had their lives ruined.

There are a lot of small things in the novel that left me aching to reach into the screen and smack the parents, but, thankfully, I don't remember them all that well (I started reading this novel from when the first chapter was published, but I am incapable reading it as it goes - a chapter a day, so I wait until a couple of dozen chapters is written to read them in bulk), but here are my "favorites":

When MC was a child he had a favorite toy given him by his big bro. One day he returned from school to find it missing. His mother decided that he is a Big Boy to play with plush toys and gifted it to some relatives. Already a shitty, shitty thing to do, but his mother dismissed him when he was upset, and told him that if he wants, he could go there himself. Well, he went and found his toy ripped apart. He tried to fix it but failed. His mother's reaction? Pure confusion, not even a little bit sorry.

And maybe I am projecting, but I also have face blindness, have trouble connecting to people, and have attachments to inanimate objects. Also, I am not a child, like MC was, I am old enough to have my own children, but reading this scene? I was literally crying. If my mother did something like that, and not even apologized, I don't think I would've forgiven her.

That is why it feels like a spat in the face when MC thinks back about this scene and feels guilty of overreacting. f*ck you, author. f*ck. You.

Another one is when everyone learned of MC being not their biological child. He grabbed the money that he managed to earn in this period of time, and left with only clothes on his back: "everything, including these birthday presents, belongs to the real young master, not me". And no one even thought to talk to him. No "we love you", no "these are presents to you, not the young master", nothing. Just "oh, you are leaving? Take care!". After some times MC's parents started meeting their biological child, always bringing MC with them. After some time the mother noticed that MC seemed less than happy about these meetups and she had the gall to be confused about why. ML shut her down with "what do you think he should be happy about" and reminded her that they know nothing about MC since they were not the ones to raise him. It was a cool scene, even if short. Also, it was the only time anyone called them out on being shitty parents. It also showed that the author is not completely unaware about shittiness of their characters. Too bad this was the only scene in the whole novel.

And the last thing that made me laugh, but not in a good way: in the first timeline MC was badly injured and needed a blood transfusion - that's how they learned that he was not their biological child. Throughout his stay in the hospital, his family (neither his parents nor his brother) visited him even once. In this timeline, MC learned that at that time both his parents were in a horrible car accident and were hospitalized themselves. What I expected his reaction to be: why tf has no one told me my parents were hurt? What was his actual reaction: oh, no, I am such a horrible person, I was offended that they did not visit me even once, but they had more important things to do. I don't know about you, but a noticed a pattern: it is Always some other thing that prevented them from taking care of their child.

[collapse]

I sincerely hope that the author knows what they are doing and it is just MC who makes excuses for his parents, and later in the novel they will get their wake-up call and make up to MC. And I hope they have a very good reason why they did not visit him even once after kicking him out. Like demonic possession. The author does not know what they are doing and the reason why parents didn't visit him once is mind-numbing awful (see details below).

Now, about the first timeline.

Spoiler

The reason MC's parents did not visit them was that they indeed were in a car crash while going to him. As a result, the father died and his mother was injured. And the mother blamed all this on MC. She really started hating him bc of that. She was the reason why ML kicked MC away. Like, on one side this failure of a mother wanting to hurt MC, on the other side the father's awful relatives who fought with him for power. So ML had a "brilliant" idea of hiding MC with his biological parents - and bringing the original young master to the viper's nest (this is never explored, but poor kid, he did nothing to be brought into this awful situation. At the coffin of MC, ML was like "we all are at fault here", like, excuse you, but the original young master did absolutely nothing, don't blame others for your mistakes). This is a shitty solution to a shitty situation, but it was supposed to be a temporal solution. Ant this is why the behavior of MC's biological parents is so baffling.

When MC was at the hospital, ML kicked him out and gave him a card with a huge sum of money - as compensation. MC threw it away and bio parents picked it up - for safekeeping, as they later say. When MC started living with them they constantly reproached him for wasting money (he wasn't, not really). They explained it as them wanting "to teach a lesson". They knew that they were supposed to temporarily take care of MC. That after the situation stabilized MC was supposed to leave them. So they decided that a child suffering after his beloved family kicked him out is a great candidate to learn the value of money. On top of that, they did everything they could safe from plainly speaking, to let him know that he is not as good as their adoptive child and neither they love him as strongly as they love him. The final drop that made MC leave was that they accuse MC of stealing money without bothering to investigate a bit. They think that MC left because he is too proud, like really? Do you think his pride is a problem here?

Also, the fact that ML was unable to find MC after he ran away is a big BIG plothole: MC's ex-friend was ruining all MC's attempts to find a normal job, so if he was able to find MC, why ML was unable? I'd lower my mark of this novel just for this.

[collapse]

Now that I got all that out, about the good better parts.

MC is level-headed, hardworking, smart, and kind. He did not forgive people who betrayed him in the first life, but he does not go out of his way for revenge. He has some (a lot) self-esteem issues as a result of his first life, hopefully, something will be done about them later. Sadly, nothing will be done about them.

At first glance, ML may seem like your typical iceberg CEO, but it is far from the truth. He is quiet and serious, but he is not cold. He is never rude, just not very good at expressing himself. He and his subordinates had an outing and they were surprised that such an unapproachable person can be so casual.

This novel does not have a plot that will leave you on the edge of the seat to learn more. Despite its premise, it does not have dog bloodied parts. The real young master is a nice kid, overwhelmed by all this situation.

There is a very annoying side character who is supposed to be an OTP with him, but he is Awful. Annoying, disrespectful, and does not take a "No" for an answer. I hate him so much. Thankfully I am not alone in this sentiment :) The author was going to write an extra about them, but was met with resistance in the comments and decided against that. Horray for common sense! Instead, they wrote an extra about some side characters who I don't even remember who they are, so I didn't buy them.

MC's biological parents seem like a**holes but in a believable way (in this timeline. They are bastards in the first life) . It is not completely drama-free, but the main focus is MC living his everyday life, developing his relationship with ML. MC does not sit idle, he is always doing something: studying, working, attending conferences, so it is never boring to read. I was invested in MC's happiness from chapter one, so it was a very enjoyable read for me. Up until the end - the extra about the past life. It shows that throughout the whole hovel MC was trying to receive the love of people who do not deserve it.

And the best part of the novel is the relationship between MC and ML. They were very close from the start - as brothers, and it is really shown, that both of them treasure their bond. MC knew for several years (in his own timeline) that they were not biological relatives, so he was the first to fall in romantic love (but even then it was not immediately). After the cat was out of the bag, ML also took some time to fall in love with MC. So no immediate love on both sides. They both take care of each other and are good together.

Why I lowered my mark from 5 stars to 3 stars. When I gave it 5* I was looking at only the part of the story. The part that starts at the rebirth of MC and finishes with their wedding. This part is still great. But if we look at the other parts of the story - what happened in the past, the events of the past life - it is garbage. Awful, illogical garbage with plot holes, no less. So the average mark for the whole story is 3 stars.

In conclusion:

so far so good. MC and ML are good alone and better together, the plot is light but engaging, side characters are (mostly) fine. I don't regret buying this novel.

A lot of readers left comments under the last chapter along the lines of:

"I wonder if [MC] really knew the whole picture of his previous life, would he work so hard to get the love of Father, Mother, and his brother after rebirth? He tries to correct the events from the last life, not knowing that he was not at fault there. It is not fair to him."

And I agree. This is not fair to MC. He deserved better. And as for me, I am disappointed. To enjoy this novel I carefully got out of my mind how shitty everyone was to MC in the past and in the past life, but this extra showed how truly awful everyone was to him. I'm left bitter and disappointed after reading it. It is not a good feeling. This novel should be about MC finding his own happiness, instead, it is about how he chased after people who would treat him like sh*t if given half a chance.

I'd describe the experience of reading this novel as reading two novels stitched in one: a good novel (not great though, there are a lot of small things that could be fixed, but this review is long as it is) and an awful novel, so your enjoyment of it depends on how good you are at mental gymnastics. <<less

MC was aware that his attitudes in the past was one of the causes of his demise. so after rebirth, he worked hard to patch his relationships with his adoptive family. but he wasn't willing to make any effort to get close to his biological family. if it were me, I would be more furious with my adoptive family who dumped me just like that. sure they got into a car accident. but even long after that they didn't contact him at all. he was hounded by the press and his adoptive family never sought him out. the timeline is a bit blurry (or I'm just forgetting things) but even when MC was facing a plagiarism allegation, his adoptive family didn't help at all. they completely gave up on him. anywaaay. I'm just a bit ".... eh" with MC. he had changed, he worked hard to get close to his adoptive family, but not with his biological one even though he now knew how to get along with them. like, I can't really say he was clear with his grievances. the author kept trying to justify his adoptive family's wrongdoings I'm speechless. if anyone says it's because the adoptive family genuinely loved him, I would be a bit "???" since I believe the biggest reason he was more loved in this life and didn't get kicked out right away when jian yi was found was because MC changed his attitudes. atp this getting along with his family has a lot to do with his willingness to make an effort.

in this life, his biological parents hadn't done anything to hurt him (honestly, his father seemed kind), so now he looked like he was being mean to his biological parents for no reason.

mc's adoptive parents are a bit.... uh. I feel like they cater to mc's feelings too much idk. they kept postponing jian yi moving in because they were afraid MC would get hurt. and rong zheng wasn't exactly welcoming to him because rong rong had saved jian yi's life twice (?) by that time. if I were jian yi, I wouldn't want to go back to my birth family lmao just visit them occassionally and ask for money lol

ML is cool. he's mature, thoughtful and sexy (lol) the way he taught MC to restrain himself was funny. <<less

It's a nice work. I cried alot during reading the first life story. I read a comment about MC character. But as a person who face that much struggle suddenly losing everything, betrayals, and then death anybody will be somewhat mentally depressed. But MC didn't go completely mentally depressed. He tried to correct the mistake that he thought that he done in the previous life. He didn't become friend with heyu in the second life. But as he know that heyu will destroy his own life because of his father... more>> MC told him about it.

In another occassion when he found that he misunderstood one friend then he become friend with him. He can't forgive his original parents as they wronged him very much. But he didn't make their life miserable simply avoided them. ML is one of the best character, he's best brother, best friend, and best lover that anybody wanted. His support is what brought MC from his past life nightmares.

It's a nice novel <<less

Ive seen reviews on other novels bashing this kind of romance, so I wanted to give a warning to anyone that doesn't like it, to read at their own risk.

3.5 (1 whole star just for the cat Mint) Qwex's review and xjgg's review summed up all the issues I had with this novel. The author is a decent writer, knows how to keep you hooked and has a clear insight into the MC/ML's emotions, but the story at its base is flawed, which sadly ruins it.

There are things I enjoyed about this novel despite the flaws:

-The MC isn't weak, he doesn't run off or cry every time he runs into an issue. Sure he does cry a few times, but not the wronged white lotus type of crying.

-The ML is still the typical CEO ML lead, but there is something about his character that I just liked.

-Their romance is not instant and MC will take the initiative in bedroom matters, even if he is still shy.

-The real young master was very likable, I'm so glad he wasn't villianized

-original MC isn't a big part of the story.

-The author recognizing that the switch at birth troupe has no "everyone happy ending"

-I really liked that no villian was dragged on for too long. I really appreciated that the whole France baddie was taken care of quickly.

-the cat, thank you author for keeping the cat safe in both timelines.

I feel like this novel could have been great if the author didn't try so hard to force the adoptive parents and abandon the real parents.

I also didn't like how ML went from 0 to 1000 with MC. While I did appreciate that neither fell instantly, when the brother did finally agree, it was a bit abrupt. Author could have sprinkled some more hints that ML was falling before hand. There is some retroactive explaining, but it wasn't enough.

It's quite nice for the romance part. Slow mutual development is always appreciated and anticipated. I just focus on the couple since others things doesn't interest me that much but that's because face slapping or anything related isn't my thing. Their moments is sweet and straight forward, nothing beats a decided MC. I like the ML a lot, reading this for him.

Under is my rant, please don't read.
Spoiler

Must be nice to know that the reason for your shitty attitude is because you're a villain in a novel and not because you're just a shitty person plus you get a second chance to redeem your guilt but not figuring out that the reason you got chase away by your family in the first place was because of your attitude and not because of the plot so you keep the mindset that you will need to go in the future. But that only means that only means the people around you acts because of the plot, not just because they choose to. People are forgetting parents, family are humans too and have limits, they are not omnipotent and always benevolent, having a child like MC who keeps looking for trouble and then finding out that the child who cause you so much pain and hardship to raise wasn't yours is discouraging. Don't think a family is entitled to give you unconditional love and support without you doing the same thing, martyrs are a thing in the past, now that's called sadomasochism. Now, the biological parents might not have money but they are rich in love for the child they raised that they forgot about thinking about the best for their biological one. Let's be honest, relationship is a bond that's made not something you get instant connection just because your genes flows in another. In this novel I believe there is no wrong side just people in their own circumstances that's why MC isn't the only one pitiful for me, they're all victims of the plot.

MC and his replacement are the most innocent people in the story. He is lucky to be raised by MC's real family. Money cannot replace love. Being broke isn't such a big deal. MC was brought up by a very unlucky, lousy family. If he wasn't a good person. He could be corrupt like them. While mc's real family is not good for MC, they are sincere with their stepchildren. They feel oppressed because they are poorer than their real children, and they use their own stigma on the child. Love doesn't happen all at once, it takes effort. I like the character of ml. But the love affair lasted too long. Mc's love for ML comes from trust issues. I wish MC would turn his back on them all and be happy.

I love all the side character in this novel
especially Sun Wen (ML's best friend eldest sister). She is so gracefull, beautiful, charming, and overall, amazing person. I think if this is not BL, I will definitely ship her with MC. Beautiful rose x little prince. Love that

I also love jian yi (the real young master). He is actually a good kid.

and MC done nothing wrong! My poor baby 😭. He is innocent. How could that nasty netizhen do that??!

In this 2nd chance, MC will not let himself be wronged. He has a deep scar trauma because of the tragedy in his past life. I am glad ML is there to help him

My humble and unpopular opinion: EVERYONE IS GOING TOO FAR WITH THE MC BEING GOOD AND SHIT! I REPEAT

First of all, I don't think MC is all that great or anything. He's the kind of sensitive character that will find fault and misunderstand your every words and deeds. And people are babying him too much. I guess it's thanks to this generations kids blaming parents so they always put all the blame on the head of parents no matter what. MC is the kind of person you'll only like in... more>> novels never in reality. He never believed his family never had any trust or deep sense of responsibility for his family. But everyone is blaming it on their parents? Why? They are saying the parents neglected MC too much. But didn't his brother treat him too well? But did he actually feel anything great for his brother in his last life? He ruined his birthday and hit him as well. Imagine your sibling who's 9 years younger, I repeat 9 YEARS YOUNGER! Hit you on your birthday in front of so many People. This is not only rude but is totally a face slap for elders. I don't know about others but probably bcz I am Asian and Asian cares a lot about manners and probably bcz I have a rude younger sibling, I probably am getting too annoyed but it's not just ruining a party but ruining the image itself. This story hurt me at the right spots. Angsty but not dramatic. There’s no one big misunderstanding that caused it all but smaller misunderstandings throughout the years that just pushed everything apart. Bit by bit, MC uncovered them all after his rebirth. In my opinion, everyone but the MC was at fault but that’s just me being biased towards insecure, hard-working and tender-hearted MC.

Prose is pretty good. There are a lot of Western ideas here that surprised me, specifically good representation of the flamboyantly queer that was respectfully done. In... more>> the Chinese BL LN that I’ve read, this usually isn’t done well.

Romance is okay for me. I felt it would have been better if they stayed platonic brothers. Honestly wished MC ended up with Jian Yi (the real second master Rong).

My main criticism probably is that there are only 2 significant female characters and they’re the mothers. These mothers do not even paint a good picture before MC’s rebirth. Wished there were more female characters overall

I recommend this if you’re looking for some angst with a happy ending and a light face-slapping. <<less

I'll start by saying that MC did nothing wrong. He went through a lot but kept going, giving his best even though there were only him and a cat, Mint. As a cat lover, I dare say Mint is an important part of this novel, especially in the heartbreaking final extras—read them with that in mind—since Mint became a lifeline for ML after learning about MC's death.

I'm aware that even though MC and ML aren't biological siblings, they grew up together, but I prefer not to comment on that. MC... more>> was the one who caught my attention the most. I couldn't wait for the final chapter to bring happiness to MC.

I ended up so happy with the extras about them. Who would have known that I would end up crying over the extras that tell about what happened to ML after MC's death in the other life?

Would I read it again? No, honestly, I don't want to see MC sad again. It saddens me to think about everything he had to go through just because of a decision ML had to make—I don't blame him. <<less

OMG, I love this story so much. It's so funny and cliche, but in a way also heartwarming at how the author views and presents the overly-used tropes. It's refreshing. Anyway, I recommend this to QT and world-hopping enjoyers! Translator is also doing a superb job, so kudos to her!!!
