_ MC is described as a captivating flower that withers even as it blooms, and that's a good description of the world as well, which is full of jewels, silk, and decadence, cruelty and beauty side by side. The European ambience and 18th-century fashions are a nice change of pace from the usual danmei. It's also nice to see multiple female characters with their own motivations and psychology. _ The story focuses mainly on the flirting between MC and ML and their developing romance, with some layers of psychological depth. It reminded me of a honey caramel wrapped in dark chocolate. The intro and ending are the thin layers of chocolate, the romance is the big gooey caramel inside. Regarding the external plots (MC's negotiations and ML's family issues) :
Both external plots are wrapped up quickly (esp for ML, his family issues are resolved by chapter 9) and without much fuss (MC's trade agreements are all negotiated offscreen). More time gets spent on side characters who provoke development in MC and ML's relationship.
- First of all, before anything else, I'd love to point out that yes, I am aware of this novel's flaws, but I still gave it 5 stars. This novel might be one of my favorites, one of my top 5 even--which is not difficult, because I'm prone to dropping things that disinterest me, and I'm prone to finishing "okay" novels and never leave a rating and a review.
- Kudos to the translator, who did a very awesome job.
- This had a lot of fluff, which is perfect for me. I love me some fluff, and I would prefer s*upid, mind-rotting fluff over painful angst and intricate plot any time. (However, I am not saying this didn't have plot, and I'm not saying this is a brainrot story. I'm just comparing what I like and don't like.) There was angst near the end, but It was only a couple of chapters, so I wasn't subject to long suffering and I am okay with that.
- I do not agree that there was a time where Jian Qiao became s*upid for the plot. The whole time, he maintained his intelligence, he never fell for anyone's schemes, he was quick to see other people's intentions. He was never s*upid in any given situation, so people who said that, if you would kindly point out to me which part exactly was he acting s*upid, then I'll admit I am wrong. In fact, I think Jian Qiao's intelligence is too OP. The main CP is too OP but I absolutely love CPs who are OP in a romance-focused novel, so I absolutely had no problems with it.
- I would like to respectfully disagree with another reviewer called Pezwitch who said, and I quote, "[Jian Qiao] started out strong and intelligent and became weaker and weaker as the story progressed." When exactly was it described that he was physically strong?? Never, just that it wasn't explicitly said that he was physically weak in the beginning, and instead of straight up telling us "this guy gets easily sick", the story just showed us that as things progressed. Since the beginning, he'd been attended to by his manservants because his constitution was weak. As for mental strength, he has traumas. Of course he's kinda mentally weak (as in, he can't persevere with negative thoughts, he gives in easily to his fears, he gets shaken easily. Mentally weak does not mean s*upid). For the intelligence thing, read #4 again.
- This is full of mushy, sappy shit. If you hate that, then you will not like this story. BUT I absolutely dig that mushy, sappy shit, so I absolutely like this story.
- Nobles in this novel are cruel in the most blatant way possible, s*aves are treated inhumanely, and if you can't bear with it, then maybe skip this novel. This is the medieval period, whose people have different morals. If you can, bear with it. It did hurt to read, but in the end, I can't cancel a book for displaying medieval, archaic values fit for its time. Even Jian Qiao is aware of this. And he knew that decades worth of tradition cannot be undone with a single word from a single person, so he bit his tongue and let things happen. Honestly, it hurt to read that, too, but I think that's the truth of the situation if any single one of us were to get thrown into medieval times.
