A Real Man Isn’t Afraid of a Little Demon

Yu Chu was a powerful character in a novel who constantly stirred up trouble, but after transmigrating, he turned from a little demon that kept the masses under his spell into a pitiful little thing that everyone bullied.

Drugging, power struggles, fratricidal rivalries… Yu Chu resolved everything one by one. He snickered and prepared to recuperate in this peaceful world. As for those noisy “flies” that disturbed him, they were slapped to death by his hand.

Looking at those foolish “flies”, Yu Chu did not have the slightest ups and downs inside and slowly extended his hand of fate to the “flies” necks…

Slap!

The hand of fate was heavily slapped away.

“What are you staring at people for? It’s just that you didn’t get the last two custard buns. Do you still want to kill and rob them for the buns?” Xie XingMu, with his serious handsome face, lectured him coldly.

Yu Chu was very dissatisfied with this mysterious pseudo-‘former personal bodyguard’.

Even though Xie XingMu was tall, handsome, and rich, and had saved him many times from life and death; even though this man, as a former bodyguard, gave him food, shelter, and money when he, a young man, was living on the street, he was not pleased.

Xie XingMu controlled him to death in all aspects, not only checked his whereabouts at any time, but also installed a tracker on his cell phone, and was always buzzing around like an old mother.

Yu Chu was living with this oppressive wife and touched the back of his hand, which was slapped red. He was fierce in his heart: Sooner or later, I will kill this biggest “fly” by holding it down.

Later, he was held down, indeed, held down.

He cried and was pressed beneath Xie XingMu and almost killed.

Thanks for the translators. They did a great job, Very understandable and clear.

But the story... disappointed! The start was interesting, but halfway through it, there’s no progress in the plot department. Plot? It ran away long before. The story was about the end and I guess the author remembered that there was actually a plot that needed to resolve.

MC didn’t solve anything. I don’t expect him to be OP (even though it would make sense for him to have some skills he had in his original world) but he didn’t... more>> do shit, he’s a salted fish! A boring fish!!!

Plus wtf with the dynamic of the main CP?? Gong is treating the shou like he’s an infant that can’t take care of himself. They have zero chemistry, who is the author fooling? Their relationship is so forced that I’m cringing when Gong called the shou “baby”

I mean, honestly, it might be my fault for expecting too much because I got hooked by the synopsis, and there are only 53 chapters, so I’m sure there’s not much world-building. But! I didn’t expect it to be so bad. It’s like, at first, it’s an attempt at transmigration story to becoming shallow trying to be a domestic slice of life story. <<less

I liked this story a lot. The author, as usual, has a tight plot, everything in its place, characters that are interesting and well developed and lots of good dialog. Little Baldy isn't one to repeat things, so each story has a pretty unique setting and idea at its core. This I would say, is the least fantastical of the stories but that doesn't take away from the drama. The author also doesn't repeat characters, but works to come up with unique and interesting traits for characters in each story.... more>> This is also very good. As a fan of good, snappy dialog, I don't mind seeing this in many of the stories at all.

Now I thought I'd address some questions I saw in other reviews.

1. The 'little demon' is referring to the MC's personality and behavior. He's very fierce, pretty dangerous, and gets into a lot of trouble.

2. So the summary isn't the clearest, but I think that's mainly because it would give away a big plot point that is key to the story. It's a good story so just go with it and be surprised.

3. Given the other stories I've read by this author, I think they deliberately chose to transmigrate the character and have his previous skills be pretty much useless because the author likes to go against expectations. Yes it means he needs help with some things, but he is very capable and does accomplish a lot on his own.

Overall, this was a good story, that expanded the variety and types that Little Baldy has covered while still maintaining the quality of their writing. Enjoy! <<less

I enjoyed the first half but as it progressed the ML became more.... annoying? He micromanages the MC like he's dealing with another toddler instead of a fully capable adult. It's not cute when your partner is on your case 24/7 and forces restrictions on you like you're a child that can't make decisions or learn from mistakes. I was really expecting more because the dynamics seemed like two powerful but mysterious men challenging each other in the beginning. Now its just a naggy helicopter mom as a man and... more>> a man that is not happy about it but accepts the toddler treatment. Plus an actual toddler who treats the MC as a toddler younger than him. <<less

There are no demons and the Description above never happened.

It should be a figuratively demon but MC doesn't fit that.

MC transmigrated into a young master that is basically imprisoned on an island by his own father. So MC, not knowing anything and especially not the reasons just want to flee... trampling the undercover guys efforts on the way.

The story started good and with action, then missed the mark and fizzled out to a lame mix of ooc events. MC was first set up as a fighter guy, wanting... more>> to be free and enjoy life. Became in the later part a homebody, binging tv and baking sweets. The transition wasn't really good.

I know the later part should be a kind of warm family scene and serve fluff but this writer really sucks at feelings. The child wasn't cute but it felt weird how he treated MC and MC basically just ignored the kid. Ther was zero communication between any of them, never mind really establishing feelings.

So this story left me bored at the end. <<less

I surprisingly really enjoyed this story.

The summary is a bit weird and misleading, so I hesitated a long time before reading this. But I'm glad I gave it a shot, because I am one of those grateful the story turned out different from the summary. Just the right mix of action, mystery, and romance.

The backdrop is that of a mysterious island overrun by the mafia/black market/illegal trade, with the MC transmigrating into the body of the second son (and bastard child) of the wealthy businessman owner of the island. His... more>> handsome bodyguard (ML) comes with his own set of mysteries and goals quite different from his own.

In this story, we have violence, intrigue, ninja sneaking around, evening parties, deathly cliffs, and of course, the law.

Spoiler

Although, I figured out pretty early where the key was, the final reveal was still very satisfying.

[collapse]

In my opinion, the MC and ML have a fantastic chemistry and relationship, and the author did an amazing job writing their (sus) -to-lovers situation.

For the readers who thought the ML babied the MC too much, tbh I'm usually the first to get irritated by those situations, but in this case, I thought the author handled it really well.

Spoiler

The MC was an orphan and liked to act out (almost rebelliously), but in actuality, what really gave him a sense of security was the way the ML cared for him.

On the other hand, not everyone would be able to endure the ML's nagging to that extent. I, for one, probably would have gotten more frustrated, but that's why the ML and MC suit each other so well. Because the MC (grumpily) enjoys it.

Unlike other novels with this setup, it's clear in this one that the MC can take care of himself without the ML. The author shows over and over again: he grew up in the slums, can single-handedly catch thieves and make 50k in a single afternoon. But the MC doesn't want to. That's the key. He loves being nagged by the ML!

[collapse]

Anyway, highly recommend. Great story, not very long but jam-packed with content. I only wish there were more extras.

Translation is not bad, only a couple pronoun mistakes and some of the double-negatives weren't caught and translated correctly.

Spoiler

There are a couple of small plot holes or moments where the author forgot something they wrote in a previous chapter, but out of consideration of the overall plot and compactness of the story, I gave it a pass.

[collapse]

FYI, if you are interested in a longer version (isolated island, mafia-vibes, sus-to-lovers, dangerous cliffs, mysteries, violence/action) of a similar setup, I recommend [Witch, Open Your Eyes] <<less

Okay okay, so. First things first. This novel is definitely just something to read when there's nothing else to read.
Spoiler

it wasn't great, but it wasn't bad. I do have to disagree, however, with some of those that said that the plot flew off in the second half. Although it was no longer on the island, the overall plot of putting the bad guy away and finding the key was still very much written out. The only difference is that it wasn't as interesting as it could have been and was watered down with slice of life bs.

i do definitely feel like they missed the mark. This could have been a bit more interesting if the MC was more of a fighter like they made you out to believe he was when he fought with the ML but in the end, a lot of it was just him catching lucky breaks and ending up with weapons to take them down with.

also, maybe it's just me, but I feel like they missed out on a heart to heart moment where the ML finally believes the MC being transmigrated and talking about his story and everything he went through in his world. Like had that been a conversation in the storyline, then it would have given the ML a better understanding of the MC and could have been a way to corroborate more smoothly or at least know what we was getting himself into when allying himself with someone that would sell you out if it benefited him.

The author tried to write it as the MC finally believing and accepting himself to be yu chu, but to do that, he'd have needed to at the very least pretend to care about the things going on. Not still be caught up in what happened in his last life and have an actual interest in the world around him.

Also?? Where did being a pastry chef come from? The whole time he wasn't a fan of super sweet sh*t so why did he suddenly want to be a pastry chef? Went from wanting to create skins to wanting to bake? How's that correlate?

like I said. Read this if there's nothing else to read because it's okay. It's not to the point of needing to turn off your brain to follow the logic, but it is lackluster. It feels like a build up to something amazing only to have it peter out right at the climax.

3.5 on the low end

Heart-warming short novel with some mystery/suspense and some slice of life.

The synopsis is a little misleading. The MC is not OP and not a demon (in the traditional sense - it’s more a reflection of his personality). Instead, the MC is a street-smart rascal from the future that uses his wits, charm, and good looks to scr*pe together a decent living in his world, and his name is Ning Cheng. However, he transmigrates into the body of Yu Chu, a good-looking but weak-bodied wealthy second gen who has lived a... more>> very sheltered life.

The story starts with Ning Cheng waking up on an island and being followed closely by a man. He later learns that the original Yu Chu is essentially a prisoner on this island - he is well-fed, well-kept, and equipped with his own personal bodyguard Zhou Mu but cannot leave the island.

The first part of the story is really interesting with MC trying to solve the mystery of why he is stuck on this island, learning about his original body’s past life, and figuring out how to leave the island.

Spoiler

The second part of the story is about his life after he escapes the island. Some cute domestic scenes happen here, and we see how Zhou Mu is really protective of Yu Chu even though he no longer his bodyguard.

[collapse]

I really enjoyed the mystery aspect of this story! There is more romance and fluffy bits in the second half of the story but not much of it in the first part of the story which is dominated by the mystery. I also enjoyed the slow-budding romance - the CP are really cute together. Fun and entertaining story! <<less

So the story is alright but the summary is misleading. Contrary to what it leads you to believe, MC isn't that strong or badass. He does do what it states (stops himself from getting drugged, deals with his elder brother, etc) but he walks this incredibly weird line between strong (he's vicious in a fight and fights well) and weak (he needs help from ML a lot).

To be honest I liked how MC's previous life's talents were unusable due to lack of technology or changes in his appearance/physique; but at... more>> the same time the setting of him transmigrating was useless and had no effect on the plot. He could have been the "hiding his true strength, secretly really vicious, pretending to be weak" young master and nothing would have truly changed. Even if the author wanted MC to need ML's help adjusting to society, it would have worked anyways because the original was restricted to one small island his entire life. The plot is alright but a bit messy and could have used some fleshing out, some points felt abandoned or given a really hasty wrap up.

That said it wasn't all bad, the banter between MC and ML was kinda cute at times. For example ML was doing push-ups only for MC to come over and sit on him; MC got disgruntled that ML was still able to do a lot of push-ups with him sitting on him, so he started to pile on pillows and blankets. The later part of the story is mostly MC and ML being a domestic couple, which was sweet but a bit unexpected. ML's nephew (turned son) is also pretty cute!

Overall, the story was ok. It didn't rock my world but it was still a nice read if you're craving that good old "body-guard x protectee" type story. It does have a lot of flaws, but if you're able to overlook it then it's a good story to casually burn some time with. <<less

Such a delightful novel! I enjoyed the characters. The MC is strong and not weak, and the ML compliments him nicely. The MC can call the ML's bluff. I can appreciate his straight forwardness. As the story progresses it is clear to understand why the MC is the way he is and why he does not trust others easily. When he finally realizes he can depend on someone is when he puts down his guard a bit and I enjoyed that a lot. I liked the ML's nephew, totally adorable... more>> and honest. There was a hint of mystery in there and then the slice of life towards the end. I do wonder what happened to the original body, if that person died? But other than that, I enjoyed seeing how the story played out and how both the MC and ML learned to depend upon each other. I enjoyed the slow burn romance, it was not rushed. Thank you to the translators for completing another fantastic novel!!! <<less

A rushed story with lost potential. The MC had a very interesting character, stubborn and vicious but powerless due to the transmigration. The ML was a mystery, constantly protecting the MC, but with some hidden agendas.

Both have them behave in extreme ways, have trauma and the way they deal with that is very realistic. The MC is suspicious of everything and slow to trust, the ML is overly controlling and smothering. If the story had been allowed to breathe, then it would’ve been much better.

A 3 star rating feels too... more>> high but 2 is too low. 2.5 is better. Mostly because the MC seems to slowly lose independence in an uncomfortable way, and ML basically gets his way as the MC has no choice for survival. Very much a ‘slow cooked frog’ scenario for MC. And the ML often treats then MC like a child rather than an equal, which feels dumb because the MC is far from helpless.

The main reason why I lowered the rating, is because of one act by the ML at the end of the story. His overly controlling manner was annoying but stuff like nagging to eat, wash your hands, etc. Is reasonable. However, changing the decision of the MC that he made about his own body? That crossed a line and wasn’t cute or romantic.

This story had the elements of a really great novel but feels rushed with its execution. <<less

I liked the first chapters, but then they left the island and somehow the MC became meek and mild

I was more interested in the original world the MC lived in with its gangs of children hiding from mysterious evil and the adult MC’s job of making skins for androids. I wish the author would have expanded on that

This was such a nice novel, but the summary really does throw the reader off a little. First of all, there wasn't as much of a "revenge" theme going, which was what I was excited for. The father-son-crime plot also kinda abruptly ended halfway throughout the novel, but that's not necessarily bad. MC's background was also not really clear. These things didn't affect the enjoyment of the read tho!
The worst part about the entire novel was probably that it didn't go along with the summary as much as I would've loved it to, but the novel was simple and cute, and overall a good read!

This was a story about how a pampering gong manages to teach a shou how to love. I think much of the plot is a bit gold-filled, but the relationship is a funny mix of awkward and sweet. The little bun in the end is cute too. If you want mindless fluff, and don't mind unexplained plot points, this is for you.

Spoiler

Still have some grievances/discomfort regarding:

1. His transmigration only being brushed over by the ML. He still insists that MC only has memory loss. When eating hotpot, he'd tell the MC that he definitely has eaten it before despite MC saying that it was his first time.

2. ML's nagging. His choice of clothing for MC being similar to his nephew's. And the fact that he regarded both his nephew and the MC as "kids".

3. There wasn't any love confession! Feelings were never verbally shared. I guess you could say that actions speak louder than words but I can't help but feel unsettled.

Read the review by earlgreyt

I 100% agree! (Wtf was this novel summary???? Or the title?? Read the review from me and earlgreyt to get an accurate picture.)

A fun transmigration/espionage adventure that takes place on an island

> romantic and fluffy getting-together and solving the mystery. Here's why you should read, and why it's going to be a re-read from me:

    • From the first interaction between Yu Chu (MC) and Zhou Mu (ML) I was hooked. MC really embodies that "protagonist strong to start" tag since he's got this futuristic tech background he transmigrated from, and he is NOT afraid to throw hands
    • really loved all the sneaking and creeping around the island hunting for clues, there's something about a mysterious island setting I just love
    • stern but secretly sticky bodyguard/future husband gong x suddenlysmall!badass transmigrator and future wife shou
    • at the halfway point they move off the island and the focus turns to the development of the characters' relationship as well as grappling with withholding and showing their true identities
    • it honestly became really fluffy and full of dog food, a bit slice-of-life which I normally find kind of slow
    • but the pacing was excellent especially for such a hard turn halfway through AND for only 53 chapters
    • No distracting side characters, a doting gong with mysteries of his own, and a shou who has perhaps just found a reason to stay
    • with some dope action scenes in the mix too
    • no big downsides except I wish the issues with MC's family had been sprinkled into the plot a bit more during the second half
Loved this book and loved that it was action and fluff in amazing, equal measure. A definite and quick re-read!

I love this novel a lot. My biggest complaint is, that it is a bit too short and I wish it was a lot longer. Both leads are great and I really liked how honest and straightforward MC is. ML is also absolutely great and I love him so much. The author and the translation are very very good and I love the writing so much. It is a very well rounded novel and I had to cry at one point too.

I'm a little bit sad that we never found out how or why MC transmigrated and what happened to the original owner, but I like MCs attitude towards them. I also love how realistic the MC is and I really felt the emotions when MC found out that he was a bait. I would have loved an extra or anything about MCs old world and maybe some closure, but to be fair the ending is already great without that.

Very well done! An adventure and action-packed short story with a seriously adorable little kiddo and a very well-developed emotional line~ I wish that there had been more about Yu Chu's / Ning Cheng's background incorporated into the story.
