When Lu Rong was only four years old, he was kidnapped and taken to a small rural village to be sold to a family living there. After failing to find the buyer, the kidnapper left Lu Rong for dead. The village chief finds the little boy and cares for him like he is his own. But Lu Rong has a secret: he can turn into a small deer, with beautiful white fur and gentle eyes, and four clattering hooves.

At the age of eight, Lu Rong meets an eleven-year-old outsider by the name of Shen Jize.

Together, whether they understand at their young age or not, they go through many trials of life and death, caught between fantasy and reality, dreams and nightmares, demons and ghosts.

When they must part after a single summer together, the two make a promise.

“Rong Rong, I won’t leave you, I will never leave you.”

3.5, rounded up for the happy feel good ending.

****Maybe slight spoilers below****

It's a nice cozy read. The parts towards the end with the demon weren't my cup of tea, I skimmed a lot of it. I feel it was too big of a story line to fit into 58 chapters, but at the same time this novel wouldn't hold up to being longer.

... more>> I wish more time was spent with the 2 getting to know each other as adults without the illusion/dream getting in the way.

MC is fine, wasn't my favorite, but not a bad MC. I wish he wasn't portrayed as naive and innocent as an adult as he was. It's like he never grew up. I get that childish, innocent good girl/boys are popular in China, but kind of bothers me more than usual in this story. Would have liked to see more from the MC.

ML is okay, I find it hard to believe that he could never find out about MC if he wanted to. I got hoodwinked when he was 14, but in 10 years nothing?

The grandpa was the best. He loved MC as his own and accepted everything about him, he gets the gold medal for adopted parents.

I not sure if I will read this again in the future, but happy I read it this time. <<less

This novel is short and sweet with some horror. I generally find short novels (e.g., less than 70 chapters) unsatisfying as it’s hard to get into the plot and characters but you really delve into this story quickly.

The story begins with the young MC fleeing from some mysterious entity with his brother/guardian. After his brother disappears, he encounters a child trafficker who takes him to a remote mountain village. However, the child-buying deal falls through and he is abandoned. Thankfully the village chief takes him in and raises him.

The MC’s... more>> ultimate secret is that he can turn into a small white deer, and he occasionally enters illusionary worlds after he falls asleep. His first interactions with the young ML are a little hostile and really funny. However, the two end up spending a whole summer together where they find themselves in the illusions and work together to escape.

Summary: The story is short yet engaging. The author is adept at defining the characters through their interactions as well as conveying their thoughts and feelings. All the mysteries are eventually unravelled with a cute happy ending in the extras.

If you enjoy this author’s writing, I highly recommend checking out this author’s other works - The General’s Vampire Omega and The Virtuous Omega Disguised as the Vicious Colonel. <<less

You can tag this as how it's a childhood sweetheart romance (with a bit of horrow/fantasy element).

Half of the novel is when they were younger, and I guess that's the attractiveness of reading this. The childlike naivety and love.

This opens up into when they grew up and got older, still retaining their childhood personalities. A simple, straightforward novel as of chapter 44. Continuing my read onwards

This author is really good at world-building and selling meng through memorable characters. I also appreciate how she takes pains to craft strong yet vulnerable MC. This novel could have been even better if she

took the time to develop more basis for the way loose ends are tied up and make the horror not so horror-house-like and easy to get past — by the way, the jade is never quite explained?

An enjoyable read. I wanted to give this 4 stars not 3!

I liked this novel because it follows the MC throughout his life. My favorite part was the marriage, super cute. I wouldn't necessarily say it has horror moments but rather intense scenes. Overall, it was well written and translated and not a predictable story which I appreciate.

OMG I loved this so much!

Okay I cried a lot. There was so much heartache for the little deer baby. Like I cried at work. Like I was snotting up my face crying.

But then the end was so sweet and I was just so happy for him and relieved!

... more>> One of the extras is just freaking weird... but the translator does let you know at the top of the page why it's weird. The others are so sweet and give such a sense of completion.

I really highly recommend this but I highly recommend reading it on a day when it won't be an issue to start bawling. <<less

This is worth reading. The plot is interesting and the translation is great. There was the right amount of mystery and fluff with some horror. It was not actually scary, just a little creepy with some weird characters.

The MC is a cute white deer who liked to call himself a little green onion/Deer Wukong/Deer Warrior when he was young. His early years were quite tragic (he was left behind in the garbage bin due to dangerous circumstances and was taken by a child trafficker before he got adopted by the... more>> village chief). The ML is a 'city boy' who went in the mountain village with his uncle one summer.

Their innocent summer romance and their adventure against illusionary ghosts made it interesting. There was also the MC's trauma with being left behind and how he got over it and the ML's realizations on how life is more than the small little world he grew up in.

I gave it 4 stars because there were some chapters that only describe their surroundings which made it like some filler chapters and the first extra was only a recap of what happened to the MC and ML when they were young. <<less

I love it. I'll admit I skipped a lot though because I didn't understand what was happening to them and it's not explained until the end. Their one summer together also lasts for most of the story and I was just waiting for them to meet as grownups. Also, I'm just not a fan of horror and a lot of it was freaky, it gets freakier when they're older and I mostly didn't read those parts.

But the whole mystery is literally explained in one chapter, and the big resolution happens... more>> like a chapter or two later, and the story is basically over. So the ending of the main story seems a bit rushed and a lot more could have been fleshed out. Like, we know SJ is a big movie star but we don't get to see much of that or how LR will fit into it. But that's just me.

I loved the final extra though because I'm a sucker for overall happy endings. <<less

If I had to summarize this novel in one word, it would be: A-DO-RA-BLE!

First of all, the characters are very likable. The story starts when the MC is 4 years old, and he is such a sweet child, I almost died from his cuteness. Half of the story happens when he is 8 and the ML 11, and it was pure fluffy all over. The other half is when they're adults, and even though they've changed, their relationship is still adorable.

Plot wise, the story is very interesting and creative, with... more>> elements of fantasy and horror (though saying "horror" is a stretch, there are some ghosts but nothing really heavy - the story is overall fluffy). Since the chapters are short, sometimes it feels way too fast-paced and some explanations sound farfetched, but all in all things get explained in the end. Although some parts are rushed, the descriptions are mostly really well written, so I can say that the writing is actually really good.

Ah, I've just finished reading and already missed them. Definetely became one of my favorite novels <3 <<less

Maybe 4 1/2 stars?
Sweet story that feels longer than it’s short 59 chapters. I say sweet, but there are horror elements in it. A few unanswered questions, hence the 4 1/2.

Most of the story is about their childhood (and they really act like kids). And don’t expect smexy times. I would have loved to know about their adult lives too.

All in all, a fairy tale.

So far it is good and interesting. I like both mystery and main characters. Translation has also been done well and easy to read. Additionally I thank the translator for not breaking the original chapters into multiple different parts.

This is a fluff and cute novel, but the backstory of MC is quite depressing, that he forms separation anxiety during his young age. Some side characters feel like 2D, like a few sentences to show their existence, most of the plot focus on the MC & ML.

MC likes to play cute with his close ones but is powerful to fight back and rescue in the deer form. Overall, 4 stars; satisfactory to read, but not exciting enough.

Initially the story was kinda cute, but then the execution of the behind the scenes mystery was so abrupt.

Suddenly the story end with just a few explanation/ narration from MC relatives.

A generous rating of 4 Star.

Fluffy little story about an adorable white deer, MC Rongrong, who tries to solve the mysteries of his past and present, and fighting his way through nighmarish dream instances with the help of ML. A good part of the book is about how they met as children and their one summer together. I loved the first part of the novel, filled with innocence, simple living, childish pride, and heartfelt love

I absolutely loved loved this novel!! I loved the characters so much!! The MC's background was sad because he thought that he was abandoned all this time. I'm so glad he found his grandfather who took care of him and loved him unconditionally. The way the mystery was portrayed was good, the scary monsters etc. The source of the parallel world were explained later on; I was expecting a bit more but it was still satisfactory! I enjoyed how the MC and ML took care of one another. The whole... more>> reunion was very sweet, after all that time and misunderstanding between the two. I'm glad that they all received their happy ending! The story was very engaging and had some funny moments as well. The translation was top notch as always! Another story with an unusual MC. I like those, and this author tends to have MCs and MLs who are equal strength/saving each other in dangerous situation wise which is also a like for me. This is mostly a two character story so it's good that both MC and ML have well developed personalities.

Be warned, you will need tissues for the first few chapters as the MC has very tragic beginnings, but its totally worth it to hang on until things brighten up for him. The MC and ML meet... more>> as children, start to develop their feelings and manage to hold onto that into their adulthood.

The dream encounter sequences that the characters have to escape, which are nice and scary to begin with, I would say are enhanced when they are being experienced by little kids, so this is also a story where you might want to leave the lights on.

Also I suspect the author had extra fun thinking up what weird stuff (all PG) she could have a deer do. That's quite a wide range apparently. Worth the read. :) <<less

It's a light horror story with some bittersweet flavor. The premise is quite simple, a village kid with tragic experiences meets a city kid in vacation. But the author expertly adds little twists that makes it more appealing.

The village kid is a shapeshifter who often goes on horror adventures in the dream world, unwittingly drags the city kid on the way. How would both of them deal with horror dreams? Why the dreams appear every now and then? Is it connected to MC's childhood experiences? Could their relationship survive conflicts,... more>> time, and distance? The development of the story is quite unexpected, and this is a plus. Another advantage: The author focuses on MC and ML, so we could identify closely with them and enjoy their ups-and-downs better. Anyone who likes light-hearted danmei would definitely love this short novel. However, the development of the plot and side characters are a little bit disappointing. MC resolves main conflict too quickly and triggers some plot hole. This could probably go for another dozens of chapters neatly if the author could prolong the climax. <<less
