It doesn’t matter if you’re not a high school student anymore or you’re in your 20’s or 30’s...

you’ll learn something valuable from this.

This novel really hits the points in your heart right.

At first it was just high school stuff, then there was slowly falling in love, unconsciously in love, then one-sided love then being mutually in love and then finally facing the world.

You and Him against the world? But you lost. Something like that and it wasn’t until a few years more that fate brought you back together.

What on earth is that synopsis? Like other reviews say, the novel's nothing like that and at no point was either lead like "I'm straight/I'm homophobic" ???

I really hope someone rewrites it, because I actually passed over reading this novel multiple times thinking, "What kinda cheesy bs is that?" I'm so glad I followed that sudden impulse to give it a try, because I continued to read it in one sitting over the span of 14 hours.

Anyways, this one's a real slow-burner and my heart fkin melted. The story takes... more>> its time exploring the backstory of both leads and build their relationship slowly. We see exactly how they are falling for each other day by day, and why they're important to each other.

The writing is great. I can envision each scene in my head and reading this felt like watching a movie, which is also helped by the high translation quality (thank you translator!) <<less

I never knew a book could make me feel so many emotions, I didn't necessarily like the ML at first but came to fall in love with him like MC. There's something so magical abt this book as it takes you along the journey with Sheng Wang and Jiang tian, the memories they created together and the joys of youth etc it's all carefully captured together to create this marvellous work.

This is such a masterpiece that I am surprised how I never knew abt it sooner. I reccomend you to... more>> hold off reviewing it until you have read till quite a bit and then form your opinion.

There's nothing to hate abt this book for me and I hope it's like that with you too.

Highly recommend this ! <<less

I felt that the pacing weren't very good, it's slow for like 80 to 90% of the novel and the last 10% was zoomed through. The first part of the story was pretty engaging because as a reader I'm still exploring and learning new story line... Got a little dull towards the middle or 2/3 until the story, and the last part felt like a rush.

Despite that, this was pretty touching, I cried. :') Additionally, shoutout to Jiang Ou too, I felt she had it tough.

A little overrated I feel,... more>> this is the kind of story I do enjoy, but probably can barely remember the characters and plot after awhile... But plus point for managing to evoke emotions!! <<less

Heart-broken. Devastated. Hopeful. Joy. I haven't been able to function normally for the last twenty-four hours. When I was recommended the danmei novel Global University Entrance Examination by Musuli, one of the giants in the danmei community, I was like nope, Imma go read something a little more light-hearted and comedic, and I chose to read Moumou, or A Certain Someone which is Musuli's second most widely read novel, following Global University Entrance Examination. Boy was THAT a choice.
When I read the first sentence of Moumou which is so CONDENSED in its lyricism, that's when I know this muthaf*cker can REALLY write. Unlike many other danmei writers who are heavy on plot, smut and has as much subtlety as a self-lubricating as*hole (looking at a certain jailed danmei author), Musuli's writing style is precise, lyrical, and no word goes unwasted. At first, I thought it was some comedic, slice of life, high school love story between two guys but it's so much more than that. The CP in question starts off as enemies and I f*ckING LOVE a good enemies to lovers story. On top of that, they are step-brothers as their parents are planning to get married. Their developments from bitter enemies, to friends grudgingly, to best friends, lovers and then.... (insert spoilers here) took the span of 5 books and 112 chapters which is around the length of Mo Dao Zu Shi but I've never felt bored, and the progression felt extremely realistic and moving.
And just when you thought that it couldn't get any sweeter, Musuli did a Meatbun (a writer famous for her "abusive" storylines) and underneath this layer of honey comes 10000 daggers coming straight at you. The strange thing is, the scenes of, that absolutely devastated me were no where on the scale of Meatbun's Shizun who had to climb 3899 steps carrying his lover while bleeding the entire way. It's devastating because all of us have done similar acts of self-harm, in repressing what we truly feel, in denying the truth of our love, in insisting not to let go in the face of intense, overwhelming h*mophobia but the relationship still ended up broken despite your best efforts. The reason why it hurts so much is because Musuli writes with so much realism that it doesn't have an iota of campiness that makes it hard to take Meatbun and MXTX's tragic scenes seriously. She writes these scenes with absolute ruthlessness and even though 24 hours has passed since I've finished the novel, I find myself walking around my neighbourhood in a daze as I try to process what has happened, and how in a certain sense, she seemed to have forecasted what might happen to me if I continue to lead a life of non-heteronormativity.
I cannot recommend this book enough. Moumou captures the unbridled joy of what it feels like as a teenager when you are looking out towards a horizon full of limitless possibilities, the unrestrained desire to soak up the entirety of the world's joy, the invincibility that one feels as one tethers on the brink of adulthood, and the inevitable hubris that accompanies it. It is a powerful story about the affirmation of one's authentic self comes at great sacrifice, but if one is lucky, these sacrifices pale in comparison to a lifetime of happiness. 11/10
I am really destroyed.

Very good. The author is my now favorite. The translator also did a great job.

One of my favorite part of this story is the fact that there's no love triangle going on.

Anyway the MC and ML is definitely one of my top 3 favorite.I like the fact that the ML is doting but very subtle.I like how when they reunited there's no blaming between them.

I'm not good with review but either way I recommend reading this.

mc: sheng wang

ml: jiang tian

summary
Spoiler

MC and ML nearly became half brothers. they lived under the same house but were pretty standoffish to one another at the start. then they bonded over schoolwork, fell in love, and started dating secretly under their parent's noses. ml's side of the family has unresolved family drama and that comes to bite him in the ass, which ultimately forced MC and ML apart. years down the road, they reunite as working adults and leave behind the drama to start a new life together.

[collapse]

thoughts

first things's first, sheng wang and jiang tian are the SWEETEST couple. they are incredibly mature and sensible for their age and while their personalities crashed at the beginning, they found common ground and became friends fast. jiang tian shoulders a lot of responsbilities for his age and, although understandable coming from a single parent family, it ruined his childhood. he probably never got to experience the joy and carefreeness that a kid should have- until he met sheng wang, and the extent of how much he cherishes sheng wang is absolutely palpable through the screen. I love it.

what I absolutely hated in this story were the adults;

Spoiler

jiang tian's mom and dad let their own childhood drama get in the way of their happiness and their son had to shoulder the aftermath of their failed relationship. in the last quarter of the story the author focused a lot on their backstory, and tried to make the mom all pitiful and such, but I could not muster a single ounce of symapthy at all. the mom couldn't get her life together after a divorce and was incredibly negligent - essentially abandoning jiang tian during his most formative years even though she had custody. after they reconciled, jiang tian had to help her shoulder the emotional baggage that she couldn't make peace with after all these years. and as the cherry on top, she has the audacity to lose her sh*t (publicly!! in the middle of a crowded hospital!!) at the prospect of her son being gay. and despite all that, jiang tian still had it in him to support her in her recovery. she is a grown ass adult of her own devices, she knows she hurt jiang tian, yet even til the end of the story she did not say a single sorry. I absolutely can't stand her.

i also disliked how she tried to treat sheng wang as her own to overcompensate for her failures. like... lady, your biological son is still here, why don't you treat him right before thinking of raising another one??

also not a fan of sheng wang's dad for forcibly separating the two. my impression of him took a nose dive after that stunt he pulled trying to shame sheng wang in front of his deceased mother's grave. and that "jiang tian goes, or you go" was so incredibly manipulative I was genuinely shocked he had it in him to pull that bs.

it's funny because my first impression of the parents were pretty good, but as the story went on it's glaringly obvious they have a long way to go.

[collapse]

ANYWAYS, I cant believe most of my review went towards talking sh*t about a couple of side characters. but regardless, I love how both sheng wang and jiang tian were able to move on and grow stronger despite all the setbacks their parents threw at them. hopefully down the road their family dynamics can improve, but in the meantime they have amazing friends and each other for support, and that's all that matters.

I love, love, love this story

First of all, I'd like to start with a big thank you for the translator!! Translation was smooth and easy to understand.

Second of all... this story... it just pokes the tenderest part of my heart and left it bleeding on the floor and only the last ten-or-so chapters managed to patch it with a few rainbow bandaids.

See, I have very low standards when it comes to novels, particularly novels whose MC is lgbtq+. As long as MC and their lover aren't abusive to one another... more>> i'd consider it top-tier already. So I picked this novel up thinking nothing much of it but then boom they went for my jugular. I don't know how many times I've cried reading this. Not only is this novel filled with gay heartbreak but they also added so many nostalgic scenes that I just 🥲

Wow this author... seriously...

for people complaining about the ML, I understand your concern but please finish the book first Yo!! I usually don't like cold MLs as well but Jiang Tian is a good person, rest assured. Idk but pick up this novel please if the summary sounds interesting to ya <<less

Writing this review, cause some s*upid rated it 1/2 after reading only 8 chapters. I don't mean to offend enthusiastic readers, but f*ck those who judge quickly even before reading 1/10th of the novel (-_-)

The MC and ML have their own worlds which we get a glimpse of before they tangle together, not letting these two find an escape when they were looking for one. And suddenly they realize that they aren't disliking that life anymore.

The story progresses slowly, but that slow build-up gets us so much more invested... more>> in the characters' development that we laugh and cry with them, we feel their emotions deeply. The cold facade of the ML and the sassy comebacks of the MC are both their shields against the world. This story doesn't idealize gay love, does not make things rainbow sparkly or anything. Though the MC and ML are academically OP, their school life was as normal as other high schoolers, their fear of falling in love and getting caught, all were real. Except for a few super OP elements, the rest of the story was relatably simple. The reaction of traumatized parents was well portrayed, and so was the reaction of resigned children.

So, it's a good read. This 5 stars is my choice. I don't even leave a rating if it's not worth my time, so I know what I am talking about. <<less

Alright I had to drop it after ch 83. It's soooOOoooo boring. I decided to pick this novel after reading Paper Plane (which I really love rated 5/5) Don't get me wrong it's well written and translated, but it mainly focus on school work and school life. Also it's a very slow burn romance. It's just your everyday normal school plus a little puppy love. There's just nothing interesting. All the details of their homework and school structures were explained in details, but when they finally had a sweet moment... more>> or any kiss, it was describe in one or two sentence then scene is cut to next scene. If you want sweet romance, go read Paper Plane, however if you want school puppy love then read on. <<less

Such a cute and heart wrenching high school love story. This book is quite realistic to the real world and how the author portrayed teenagers falling in love is also quite an eye catching point. It's a slow romance of two teenagers who are supposed to be step brothers, how they accepted each other and love each other yet at the end they are still teenagers who can't stand against the whole world like adults, so they get separate and then meet again. It's not too fluffy and it has... more>> a very good pace of story.

How everyone are once reckless, how children have to pay for the bad deeds done by their parents, how they hold on their love despite being away for 7 years.

it's etched to my bone that I still love you.

I like you; therefore I wish for the people to flock around you, therefore the path you walk on should always be surrounded by blooming flowers — and the clamor of people too.

EVERYTHING...

IS GOOD. <<less

High school romance with angst. Sad background story for both leads, finding comfort in each other kind of story. Both being genius is kind of formulaic. There is also a time skip in the last arc. I liked it but Top 2 in JJ feels a bit overrated. May be most of the readers of JJ are school kids who relate to such stories ?

This is such a good slice of life story aside from being BL-themed. I had fun reading this as well. I seriously thought it would get draggy after they got together but there's a bloody drama in between. Although the story's pretty common, I still love all of the characters' development.

There are tons of times my heart aches when I was reading this but what left an impacts were:

Spoiler

When Jiang Tian and Sheng Wang visited Old Man Ding after getting back together in their 20s, instead of saying they've already grown up, his reaction was why Sheng Wang's still wearing a thin set of clothes. His memories were still stuck in that summer when he fell at the stairs, same time when Jiang Tian and Sheng Wang's relationship got exposed.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Although, I hated Ji Huanyu (Jiang Tian's father), I still felt sorry for him after he received his "retribution", and that is, living all alone without anyone taking care of him. He probably loved Du Cheng so much that he could bare to leave his son and wife. To also think that Du Cheng was supposedly in love with Jiang Ou (Jiang Tian's mother), I wonder how they got together.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Lastly, it's when Sheng Wang prepared a surprise for Jiang Tian's 24th birthday. He prepared the same cake but with only him, Jiang Tian and the two cats' (leader and Wang Zai) on it instead of their previous family back then. After that, he kissed Jiang Tian's face and said "Happy Birthday, Ge. You're already 19" up until to the latest, just to fill those years when they didn't celebrate it togather. (╥﹏╥)

[collapse]

PS: I always drop the novels I read everytime they already got together but for this one, I was motivated to finish it. Their interactions were too cute and natural. I love Sheng Wang's personality too and unexpectedly also love the aloof "Jiang Tian". This type of character would actually sometimes end up leaving a bad taste in a story but for this one, he isn't only good to Sheng Wang but unexpectedly good with those who also cared about them. Like Old Man Ding, the mute, people in Xi Le and his few friends in Class A. He already treats them well even before Sheng Wang appears so I'm quite pleased with how he's not the same in other stories that are so "novel-like". All in all, this is a good recommendation for those who loves fluff and wants to witness character growth. <<less

This book is VERY similar to Saye in some ways, I hate to compare, I'm not sure if it's a genre thing. Saye was written in 2016? And Moumou 2018.. Anyway I highly preferred Saye.

Things I loved about this book-

  • The handling of LGBTQ topics and discussions. There are other gay couples, and navigating familial h*mophobia and similar topics are done really well. It leads me to believe that either the author identifies as queer or likely knows someone who is queer. There are older LGBTQ folks who embark knowledge on our young main couple which is a thing that happens very often in the LGBTQ community in real life but I rarely (never) see it in Danmei. Very very very very impressed in this regard. The book isn't my favourite but I would still recommend it for this reason alone.
  • Couple is adorable!
Things I disliked about this book-

  • The book is written as if the reader will believe that the highschool experience is interesting. If you're not interested in painstaking details about highschool classes and schedules, you'll be very bored with the pace.
  • It's very heavy on the "upper classmen" vibes. Rich kids, high grades, gradual progression to being well paid corporate employees, etc. There's even moments where they infer that someone's life was essentially ruined because they landed in the trades. Another reason why I preferred Saye (more of a working class type novel.)
  • The first 40 or so chapters are very lacking in humour, but you'll get there if you keep reading.

Amazing, I binged this in less than 2 days. Don't let this novel fool you though, I had started reading thinking it was a typical slice of life romance, so I was a little unprepared for the angst towards the end. I usually read lgbt novels for the escapism and don't gravitate towards stories like these since the content hits a little too close to reality. But I am so glad I read this. The characters are great and feel real. The gradual build up from friendship to romance was... more>> so well done, it all felt so natural and genuine. I can't stop thinking about them since I finished reading.

Their bond and story really touched my heart, please give this novel a read! Just be prepared for some triggers before picking it up.
