Gu Zhuoyan and Zhuang Fanxin.

They met in their teenage years, two bright stars colliding in the night sky. They fell in love, and together they passed the happiest days of their lives. But all good things must come to an end, and they eventually broke up.

Time passed, and they lost contact. They grew up apart, each going their own way. But even though they were apart, they never forgot their first love.

One day, they met again by chance. They were both on blind dates, and they found themselves sitting across from each other. They were both surprised by how much they had changed. They were no longer the carefree teenagers they once were. They had grown up, and they had experienced the pain of loss and heartbreak.

But would they be able to go back to where they started from? Could they pick up where they left off, ten years later?

Only time would tell. But one thing was for sure: their story was far from over.

P.S This rating is purely subjective, due to certain pet peeves of mine. I read this novel after seeing it in the rec section of "A Certain Someone". And boy it was definitely not my cup of tea.

I would've loved this novel if I had read it in my angsty teen phase. The author has a very good writing style. But after going through countless dogblood mangas and novels, this is the same recycled breakup-reunion Josei plotline.

The Uke guards himself like a jade after breakup. His love / lust switch... more>> is permanently turned off. He doesn't even do dates let alone one night stands (Just like the heroines in old josei's). Also he never even made a new friend. The Seme has no problem with his love/lust switch. So ofc he has no problem dating again, finding substitutes and getting some D.

*Reunion ensues*

Seme: I've tried being with others but they aren't you. Have you been f**ked by anyone else?

Uke (touched) : I've never been with anyone else.

Seme: *Beats his chest because possessiveness is satisfied*

Agrees to reunite.

Yes the Uke never even went on a date or anything. He never even got a crush on others. But Seme had 3 ex's, and he cohabited with some of them. So why is it always the Uke / Heroines who are left to guard their single status and chastity, while the Semes / MLs have all the fun?

Compared to this I prefer novels where either:

both of them date others after breakup, then reunite; or both of them stay single until they reunite. <<less

i just realised I don't have an account on NU even if ive been using this site for like a year... but for this novel I just had to make one and give the 5 stars it deserves. i'll tell you why.

writing. mainly the writing style. it's so poignant and bei nan describes so well. the sweetness, the heartaches (mostly the heartaches), the characters' relationships. but especially, the way she built up the highest tension on the novel towards the end. (and I cried so damn hard.)

we don't usually... more>> come across such an achingly beautiful story.

also, i'd like to say that the translation for it is really good. it's okay to mtl if you want but i'd encourage to continue reading from the translator.

this is my first novel i've finished from bei nan and I'm glad. it's just so worth it. <<less

The fact that I've read about 99 novels here but this is the first one that made me sign up for an account so I could rate it 5 stars.

Absolutely PERFECT. BEST FIRST LOVE NOVEL EVER. Will make your tears come out from both heart-wrecked and happiness. The MC and ML are so adorable, I love the way they treasure each other and turn their tragic first love into a forever happy ending.

Great characters building especially the ML, I found him different from those young masters out there. The writer's... more>> done a good job to describe how rich he is without making me uncomfortable. No spending money like sh*t just to impress the MC. Instead, the ML spends money like sh*t just because he wants to and the MC himself got impressed by that. Lol

Highly recommended. The quality of a translation's far too good. Unquestionably worth reading. <<less

Good but not spectacular. I did like the parts when they were grown-up better than the former teenager part. The novel is written chronological so it starts when they are teenagers and met for the first time.

To give you an overview at which chapter the important occasions happen, here a spoiler:

Spoiler

33 - 35, they come together

55, breakup

56, distancing... literally, like in another country.

57 ten years later

59-60 meeting again

66, MC openly states to want to have another chance. From here on out "chasing".

76, NSFW

94, finally explaining the past

[collapse]

I feel like the story had a lot more potential than it used up. It even used some standard dogblood plots. It wasn't anything too surprising and felt sometimes as if I already read this novel because of the similarities to other novels in this genre.

Although I did like the grown-up parts better, MCs character growth was somewhat not good pictured. When alone, he was able to be the "bad cop" but as soon as ML was near his character regressed to a cutey teenager temper. I would wish to a more stable MC.

As you can see, this novel has its flaws but it was also entertaining enough for me. I did like the side characters, well some of them.

This novel made me especially in the ending chapters cry, so there is emotional moving plot.

I think it's worth a read. <<less

PROS: The writing is engaging. I immediately got hooked on the first chapter. It's written on two halves, the younger and adult version. The first half tells us when they first met and how their young love came to be. First of all, it's brimming with sweetness and youthfulness, that kind of innocent love. If you're someone inexperienced like me who hasn't dated on their high school/teenage days, you'd feel envious lol. But if you do, then you can relate and recall the good 'ol days.

There's a fair share of... more>> misunderstandings
Spoiler

like when ML misunderstood that MC knows he's gay so he thought MC was purposefully getting flirty with him

and secondhand embarassment 😂 But it wasn't in any way frustrating.

The characters aren't annoying, they're flawed but still adorable. Most of all, they COMMUNICATE. ML and MC are both matured. In fact, I'd say too mature that sometimes I'd forget they're just 16-17 years old. But that's okay, age sometimes does not account to maturity.

CONS: It might just be a bit streched on my part, but I think it got overly dramatic and sentimental on the later chapters. I won't elaborate but basically it's when they met again after 10 years. But I believe you have your own judgement. So yeah, if you're into slice of life dramas, it's worth checking out! Happy reading :) <<less

It's a beautiful novel. ❤️ I absolutely loved this novel.

Must read.

Why to read this novel???

... more>> ◆ This is the best First Love novel I have ever read.

- it was portrayed so beautifully.

◆ If you wanna see people behaving as per their age.

Eg. When the MC and the ML were in high school. Later when the become adult.

- I don't wanna complaint or anything but in most of the CN Novels MC/ML is always depicted as ahead of their age in their behavior. No matter if they are kid or teenage in their school years.

This novel depicted the freshness yet the maturity of youth. Later their adult phase.

◆ A whole rollercoaster ride of our main couple.

The love, heartache, longing, reunion, grievances and more deep love for each.

◆ All characters are so good.

MC & ML

Both of them are precious babies.😭

MC had such a lovely personality it would have been loss of the ML if he didn't fall in love with him.

ML is really good too. He is definitely different from other BL MLs. He has great relationship with his friends. Cool but kind. Not stoic face. Very caring to his sister

Side characters

I really loved the friendship showed in this novel. MC and his friends; ML and his friends.

Special highlight : In many BL novels even though ML has friends, the relationship is showed as one side effort from his friends and accepting ML's non caring behavior as saying that he (ML) cares but doesn't show.

Here they friendship and care for each other is rock solid strong & expressive from both sides.

ML's sister : She doesn't have much role in 2nd half of novel but their relationship won my heart in 1st half of the novel. Specially when the ML said that
Spoiler

she is engaged to LM (ML's best friend). She calls him to break off the engagement and forget her😂😂

[collapse]

Every character is good including their parents. None of them is scum even though it feels like in 1st half (specially ML's parents)

◆Misunderstanding

Youth : It was not a irritating one. Excerpt from chapter 36 so you can get the idea

"He and Gu Zhuoyan had misunderstood each other the whole time, but surprisingly, in spite of the misunderstanding, Gu Zhuoyan liked him, and he liked him back."

They both talk to each other about everything.

Chapter 37 the ML talks about how he eas using the MC go get back to his parents at start.

Later it was man made from the MC's side so the ML can let go of him.

Romance & Plot

This novel gives great first love vibes. Their relationship was so good that I was so curious that why are they gonna break up?

Prepare the tissues. You gonna start crying from
Spoiler

chapter 54 to 57

Then in last chapters of the novel.

[collapse]

Plot is relationship development centric.

I'm gonna stop writing here otherwise I can write a whole essay.

Totally recommended.

Read it.

I google translated the raws after chapter 75. Understandable <<less

This is a story about two people who find their way back to each other after a long separation. It is a story of reconciliation, of second chances, and of the power of love.

It is also a slice of life romance, told in a way that is both relatable and heartwarming. The characters are well-developed and believable, and the story is full of humor, pathos, and hope.

If you are looking for a story that will make you laugh, cry, and fall in love, then this is the story for you.

First, I would like to say that this is a 10/10. You must read it! It was so painful but so sweet too! I cried so much!

And secondly, I'd like to talk abt one of the things that frustrated the reader with 1 star review. (you know who you are😑) That being the exes in the 10 year gap. Fanxin had none and Gu Zhuoyan had 3 or 4.

Now, let's start from Fanxin's and Gu Zhuoyan's break up. After almost 2 years since they broke up, Fanxin called him saying... more>> that he fell in love with someone else. He told Gu Zhuoyan to move on. And he tried. But failed terribly 😂. Here's why. He kept everything related to Fanxin for 10 years. As for the exes... he dated them for a very short period of time. The longest lasting 3 months. So I wouldn't believe what Zhuoyan said 100%, abt the cohabitation thing. Most likely, he wanted to make Fanxin jealous. All of them were designers, resembling Fanxin. Although Zhuoyan won't admit it, he tried to find a substitute for Fanxin. Realizing that they weren't what he wanted, he broke up with them. You don't get much info abt how those relationships were or how he treated them. So you can make your own headcanons. This is all in the context that Zhuoyan thought that Fanxin moved on btw. That he was happy with someone else.

Although the reality is different, he didn't know that.

Fanxin didn't have any exes bcs he was in a terrible depression. He tried to take his life! Twice! Gu Zhuoyan was the reason he got better.

So in conclusion, none of them moved on. The reason why Gu Zhuoyan was jealous of Fanxin's imaginary ex was bcs he thought Fanxin fell in love with someone other than him. Bcs even tho Gu Zhuoyan dated those people, he didn't love them. <<less

This is such a heart wrenching romance!!

I loved it. I particularly loved the ending and the extras. These are beautiful together as well as the only one for each other. I felt like crying when I read MC's blog during depression. I felt a dull pain for ML when he came to know, how much MC suffered in the past.

Highly recommended!!

thoughts

this was my first novel of 2022, and its forever going to hold a special place in my heart. theres not a lot of novel that made me bawl nonstop but this one does it so effortlessly I have to wonder if I was bewitched or something. every sentence is jam packed with emotions. every gesture has meaning. every scene meant something. the author has a magical ability to draw so many parallels between fanxin's and zhuoyan's past and present and every single one of them hurt so good.

reading the first 50 chapters was like a completely different experience reading the last 50 chapters. the first half was chock full of sweet high school vibes, cute misunderstandings, the sillyness and lightheartedness of high school students and of first love. it was so healing to read. last half of the novel completely switched gears and fanxin is no longer the shy kid but full of vigor and bravado. zhuoyan no longer played the steady untouchable role in their relationship - he himself was hurting and needed fanxin's coaxing and reassurances. I love the maturity and I loved their character development. it had the nastiness of corporate power struggles but also the warmth of being surrounded and accepted by friends and family. I was so glad their close friends were all so supportive, before and now. fanxin and zhuoyan were no longer powerless against circumstances, they could change fate themselves. and the briliant display of sovereignty over their lives at the end of the novel had me floored. it really leaves you with the feeling that, once you reach the end and put down the novel, fanxin and zhuoyan would be alright, capable of weathering any storm that comes their way :)

Spoiler

the knives were brilliant. I know the general tone of the story is light hearted and healing, but the author really doesnt pull back any punches. the scene that absolutely devastated me was the final reveal, when zhuoyan finally understood the pain fanxin had faced during his ten years abroad. his depression and attempted su*cides, and how he managed to pull himself back out of darkness only by thinking of zhuoyan. on the off chance that they might meet in the future, fanxin wanted to leave a shining first impression again, and he could only do that if he worked hard to become a person again. to think that he staked all of that energy, motivation, and passion on zhuoyan... he knew there was a good chance he might fail, but the chance is there and he was willing to take it :')

(and when zhuoyan broke down in the hospital thinking how close he was to losing fanxin twice that absolutely shattered my heart)

Such a beautiful novel! Absolutely loved it!!!

Slice of life novels tend to get monotonous sometimes but this one was an absolute gem.

The teenage years were funny and adorable. The portrayal of friendship, first love and the accompanying feelings was really sweet. The angst, reunion and anticipation after that was gut wrenching. It made me laugh and cry with them.

... more>> Also character development is really great.

I loved how ML's character showed emotions of happiness, embarassment, sadness throughout the years and was not the archetype cold, aloof sort of character. It was refreshing to read that.

Our MC, though initially a bit naive, develops into a more fleshed out character as the story goes.

Translation was amazing! I loved how translator even gave the pronunciation for the names. Thank you for your efforts!! <<less

A bittersweet, angsty, slice of life BL novel. When I was reading this novel at the early chapters, I keep speculating what could have happen to make this couple to break up later because there chemistry is so good! It was when I reached the climax that I could not help but to bawl my eyes out. Poor ZF! Poor GZ! Poor my fragile heart!

Anyway, it's a HE so that compensate all the previous pain.

NB! It's a slice of life novel so if you're not a fan of this genre,... more>> you might find the plot at the beginning to be a bit slow/boring. <<less

A sweet exes-to-lovers slice of life story with humor, angst, and drama. Looking under the hood of the translation (which is quite nice), the writing is undoubtedly good. The story starts off in the idyllic, uneventful days of highschool life. The MC is earnest and lovable and unwittingly charms the pants off of ML. For a character who is supposed to be thin-skinned, the MC says a lot of shameless things that had me covering my face in secondhand embarrassment. The cast of side characters is also a great supportive... more>> bunch and well utilized in the story.

For the most part, the story managed to avoid senseless, drawn-out misunderstandings meant to manufacture drama but there's one or two sore points I have.

Mild spoilers ahead.

Midway is when the story begins to pick up. The breakup was painful but it also frustrated me because I felt things didn't need to be that way. To some extent I understand that as a 17 or 18 year old, you can feel pretty powerless and influenced by your elders, but for two people who deeply loved each other, the complete lack of communication baffled me. It's not like they were forbidden to keep in contact? Anyway, I read feverishly to get past the pain.

After they finally reunite, MC's pursuit of ML is indulgent and relentless and fills your heart with all the healing you need. A lot of dog food. The cars are hot and tastefully written.

There is a somewhat melodramatic reveal with a lot of hinting leading up to that point to an extent where it almost felt weary (like, just tell us already!) but the end is satisfying, even if everything wraps up almost a little too neatly.

Spoilers:
Spoiler

It surprised me how emotional I felt during the airport kiss scene, even thinking about it now makes me feel a little weepy.

Some further thoughts about ZFX's incident. I understand he underwent trauma, but it is strange to me that he was completely avoidant and mum on the topic (as if that isn't super fishy in itself) instead of just straight up saying hey, bad things happened and I don't like to talk about it. It felt at odds with his age, maturity, and the counseling he probably had, and it felt more like a tool for creating suspense/drama that I didn't find believable.

Surprisingly, h*mophobia doesn't really play a role as much as the beginning of the story leads you to think, which is kind of nice.
