I am a harsh critique, But I am fair with the reviews. So let's get on with it. Premise: 4/5
The story is introduced fairly. It does not overwhelm you with a lot of information. It is concise and is believable enough for the setting the novel is based in. Characters: 2/5
The characters are bland. But that is not a reason enough to give it two stars.
The issue with characters is the lack of empathy and emotions. I can understand the decisions they make, good or bad- You cannot rule a kingdom with clean hands. But, it is concerning if the emotion while you are happy and when you mass mu*der is the same. It can be understood if one character was made that way, But every single character is the same. Writing: 2/5
So, there are two parts to the writing that concerns me. 1. Lack of anything that shows expression. Be it Interjections, or just simple exclamations. It is not a very good feeling when you are reading a battle scene and the only sound that enemy can make is "aargh". It is so off-putting that I have skipped multiple battle scenes. 2. The grandiosity. 100 copper is 1 silver, 100 silver is 1 gold. Fairly simple. But, the author goes ahead to make it more grandiose. Instead of using simple terms like 1000 gold, you get 10million copper.
An example would be auction, where the first item sells for 1.5million silver. I am sorry, But that is essentially just 15k gold. There is no need to make it a grand number. This is just one of the instance, It happens throughout the novel and is very annoying.
The pacing is fine. It does not drag on too much, neither is it painfully slow. People complaining about pacing need to take a break because this is an author's style. What is the fun if everything is the same. I enjoyed the pacing because even if I got into an arc which was boring, I knew that it would be over in 2-3 chapters. It is reassuring. World building: 2/5
1. A good novel has a good MC, But that does not quality the novel to be good. A good antagonist is as important as the MC. This novel is a blunder on that. Most of the Chinese novels are lacking in the department. But, for a novel that has already cleared boundaries of development, the antagonists of the novel are a joke. This is not a world building game. This is just a single player game.
There is nothing interesting about the world, because there is a limit to the plot armor. Face slapping is fun if the enemy is worth slapping. It is just dumb if you pick a weak dumb person from the dregs and slap him. Guess what? Most of the enemies belong to the latter category.
MC gets all the resources, there is zero information about actual kingdom building, and how he is approaching the issues. Because, apparently a city with population of hundred thousand just stays fine without a water resource, because who needs water anyways. Research: 3/5
The Good: The author researched with pretty well about what he wanted to write. The history is presented in a way that makes you want to research it. You will definitely go search up the empires and dynasties when you read about them. The biases are obvious, and they are geared more towards reality than fiction. The Bad: While the Chinese history and characters are written pretty well, it takes a massive dump when introducing any other nation. It just goes beyond nationalism.
I understand that it is a novel for Chinese people so the nationalism aspects can be understood. However, it just does not stop there. It just goes on and on about how the Chinese empire is the biggest empire in the history of the world. NO.
China, definitely is one of the oldest civilizations, But there have been better and bigger empires.
Anyways, it is all forgiven. It is a Chinese novel and that biases are obvious. If it triggers you, this novel might not be for you. However, I have read worse. This novel is definitely not that bad with its racism. It exists, But just not that bad. Overall, a decent novel. There are a few things that can be annoying, but it is momentary. It is good enough for you to escape from your reality into a world on warfare and being some enjoyment in your repetitive life. But do not hold many expectations.
