Disclaimer: I haven't watched the animation nor read the manwha, so my review is based on the novel alone.

Verdict: started in an interesting way, but the characters and plot never really delivered. The premise is good, mutual secret love between two high schoolers who never have the courage to confess and who meet later as adults and get a second chance.

The top is the popular handsome boy/man who's good at academics and sports, well-liked and and out-going personality. The bottom is shy, introvert and unpopular. He can't do sports due... more>> to a serious issue with his lungs, hence the title of the novel.

Plot summary: novel skips between past and present (I've read novels that do this very well, but here it felt kind of clumsy and confusing) Spoilers:

Spoiler

In high school Myeong (a prodigy in the Asian game of Go but outcast at school) and Seonho (the popular class president) are attracted to each other, but neither person dares to act on their feelings, and they lose contact after graduation. One night after a crushing defeat, the 27-year old Myeong attends a high school reunion in the hope of meeting his old crush, Seonho, whom he never got over. Seonho makes a pass at him, they sleep together, get into a relationship due to Seonho's initiative, but struggle because of Myeong's lack of social skills/low EQ (very low EQ and to me he seemed to be on the spectrum, but this is never addressed in the novel) and his low self-esteem plus putting Go above all else and being briefly persuaded by his mentor that any distraction (in this case his relationship with Seonho) is a problem and he should get rid of it. The separation is short because Myeong's sister persuades Seonho to check up on Myeong, who falls apart after the breakup (which he himself initiated), and they quickly get back together. They learn to communicate and with Seonho's love, Myeong becomes more mentally and emotionally stable and get more self-esteem.

Happy end.

[collapse]

The problems: The story and characters feel half-baked. The premise of a secret mutual school crush is realistic enough, but their individual attraction to the other person feels very shallow and is not explore much.

Myeong falls in love at first sight - it's mentioned in passing that he knows he's same sex-attracted, but then it's never explored further. Which is a shame because the idea of the introvert and socially awkward teen who has to struggle with taboo feelings while being a social outcast could have been interesting to explore. His sister apparently has a sixth sense about Myeong and knows (to the point where she remembers Seonho even 8 years later and knows Myeong had a crush on him even though she saw him only once). But his interactions with Seonho feel shallow they way they're written, so Myeong being in love with the same guy for 8 years after despite zero interactions is just not believable.

Same goes for Seonho - his awakening feelings was actually the most interesting part of the story - he's described as having an 'animal' inside him, meaning his forbidden sexuality that he struggled to deal with. Yet he takes a very short time to actually struggle, and the rest of high school he just tries to very subtly hint at his feelings to Myeong, but never does anything. Which, given that his crush is a boy, is not unrealistic, but it's also not very satisfying to read. And then for some reason Seonho walks around with a couple's ring on his finger and pines for Myeong for 8 years, but despite being described as a confident and determined person, he never once tries to contact Myeong. Yet the second he meets Myeong at the reunion (and he had no reason to believe Myeong would ever attend the reunion, considering how Myeong had a bad time in school and was bullied by his classmates) he comes on to him in a way that just does not seem realistic.

Spoiler

the ring that he put on Myeong's finger is supposed to be a grand romantic gesture, but why on earth is he wearing a ring anyway (as Myeong and any sane person would misunderstand) and why doesn't he just confess instead of going straight to s*x and putting the ring on the other person? That's just not how a normal person would behave.

[collapse]

Once they get into a relationship, they both seem pretty codependent, and I never got the impression that they were a good match. They act like teens, and especially Myeong is irritating. He comes off as the typical 'bottom' in BL who's soft and naïve and delicate, so he gets treated like a child by the protective top who apparently don't want a partner who's a functioning adult. Yes, they do start to communicate in the end, but it felt tagged on, like the author just wants a happy ending, all problems solved.

The angsty part was dumb:

Spoiler

Myeong breaks up for a really dumb reason, like a teenager would, not someone who's 27 and has been pining for the same person for 10+ years. One word from his mentor and he breaks it off, which is frankly insulting to his boyfriend. He's right that Seonho has no reason to love him, Myeong isn't lovable, he's a child in an adult man's body who isn't able to function as an adult. The fact that Seonho is so in love with him makes Seonho seem out of his mind, because they have nothing in common and share no meaningful interactions after they get together except having s*x.

[collapse]

Myeong's family and mentors seem to have over-protected him, and his mom's behavior and attitude is frankly worrying. I think his dad is the most sane person in the family, while Myeong unfortunately gets into a bad school and therefore gets bullied, his dad was right that he needed other experiences in life than just playing Go. Myeong's behavior both in school and as an adult also shows that his family (and it seems especially his mom who just pushed him to play Go and doesn't consider his feelings or opinions - neither when he's a child or when he's an adult, as seen when the media slanders him and she shrugs his discomfort off as irrelevant) neglected in teaching his any social skills. Even as an adult he lacks the skills and knowledge about basic social interactions, as seen when he's away and Seonho can't contact him for days - his family just shrugs it off and have never taught him basic communication (this is where I suspect he's somewhat autistic and his family is in denial about it, his behavior is at times very anti-social and with a severe lack of empathy - but the author never comes clean about this).

The fact that the second he starts showing signs of being psychologically distressed

Spoiler

because of his very dysfunctional relationship with Seonho, which is basically Myeong's own fault beause he treats his boyfriend horribly inconsiderate and acts like a child

[collapse]

his mentor/surrogate dad just tells him to focus on playing Go and forget everything else, which is terrible advice. The sister is the only one who seems to show any real care for Myeong's mental health, the dad (who actually cared when Myeong was a teen, although in a very basic way by insisting he attend high school) is out of the picture, the mom only cares about her son's career.

Side characters pop in and out, but are treated like plot devices rather than actual people, even the sister just exists to help the couple get together.

There's a good amount of steamy smut, but the pairing of weak-willed, delicate bottom and overindulgent, extremely loving strong top and the under-developed romance and plot was disappointing, the story had potential for more. Maybe the animation or manwha are better.

But for high school romance and secret love there are so much better BL novels out there, this was frustrating to read and really underwhelming. <<less

As the translator, my review might be biased. Sorry about that.

I have loved 'Hyperventilation' ever since I first came across its animation and manhwa, so imagine my delight when I found the novel - and it certainly didn't disappoint!

저수리 (author of 'Semantic Error') once again delivers a heartwarming BL story, this time expanding upon what 뿡빵뀨 has already perfected. Both past and present get explored, including school life and adult careers (and a look into the world of Go), which gives more context to the existing story and makes the... more>> characters more dimensional. Especially Seonho, the "perfect man" full of confidence, isn't always as he seems. Myeong, too, isn't as passive and meek as one might think. Speaking of characters, more are introduced in the novel, and they all influence the story and its dynamics. I have grown particularly fond of Jeong, Myeong's sister.

I don't wish to give away too much, so I think I'll end my review by saying this - while adaptions oftentimes take away from the original, this novel does 'Hyperventilation' justice and is a neat treat for old and new fans alike. The romance hasn't been cheapened but rather deepened with added layers not shown in previous versions. So please, give this a try and fall in love with 'Hyperventilation' once again. I know I did.

The novel contains explicit s*xual content. But other than some medical distress, there are no warnings. <<less

I have been a fan of hyperventilation for several years now and it's one of the few manhwa that I return to time and time again. I honestly can't say what it is that I find so special about them given than the manhwa is so short and doesn't get a chance to flesh out the characters. It's why I'm so happy that this is getting translated - and by such a talented translator! You've done an excellent job and I really appreciate the footnotes!! Sending my love and thanks... more>> and please don't feel any pressure to rush the next chapters, seeing new updates feels like Christmas come early ^^ <<less

This story has great narration. I was happy when I saw how the author narrated the story. The translation is also good. However, I don't particularly like that it is in Google drive because I'm not fond of gdrive. (Not a big deal but I'm having a hard time reading in Google drive. It's taking me a long long time to finish reading the translation)

Anyway, I'm still waiting for more translation.

But based on the previous chapters I read, I can say this story is promising. I even watched the... more>> manhwa edition of this novel and even watched the animation.

Looking forward for more chapters. <<less

The collaboration between these two, it's my holy grail of Korean BL! I'm a big fan of both writers. Love their artistic combination of warmth vs doubt, the inner battles of the characters felt very raw and realistic. And so different from each other. Their young selves vs older selves, that was interesting too. Their romance, hmm, can be considered slow-burn? Maybe? But also fast somehow. And frustrating at times. Fragile but deep, if that makes sense. More hurdles are coming, I know because I have the book. The translation... more>> is good, detailed. <<less

As someone who watched the anime first, then the manga and then eventually even found out about the novel... OH BOY did none of them disappoint me! I am a diehard fan of slow-burn with erotism and this one is all for me. It genuinely had me checking in for updates everyday. The care and time even the translator put in also shows, so tysm.
Now, if any of you have some good recommendations for me with similar slow-burn but also spicy moments, do send them my way.

I read/watched in this order: manhwa, novel, animation

I cannot believe how good this novel is. J. Soori is so good at writing angst and pining.

Out of the three media, I would say the novel is my favorite. It really captured the bitterness of a one-sided first love and the pride that comes with trying to preserve it. I cried at some of Myeong's flashbacks because it reminded me of my own crush

the same deprecating thoughts, wanting to steal a glance, wanting to confess and yet afraid, and wanting to... more>> move on from first love after high school ended.

One of the quotes that I relate to the most is from 12, Nineteen, Winter:

Spoiler

Perhaps desire itself was a torment for someone lacking in courage

[collapse]

Because I knew I would binge read this novel, I wrote down notes for each chapter and then sorted them in chronological order. It really helped me remember important details and also analyze the characters on a deeper level. Additionally, I want to add some of my thoughts on their relationship. Please like my review if you agree with my analysis. My analysis contains a lot of spoilers from Volume 3, so please don't read it unless you have finished the novel.

There doesn't seem to be an active community for this novel, which is a shame, cause I have so much to say.

Key: A = Seonho, B = Myeong, J = Jeong (Myeong's sister)

Spoiler

Their relationship dynamic.

B was A's first in everything. I can't help but find A's faithfulness both idiotic and endearing, a contrast to his confident and cold appearance. This felt almost like a defiance towards the world that favored A but didn't give him the one person he wanted to be with. On the other hand, this reveal allowed A to reassure B -- who tends to end his thoughts in self-loathe -- that his love for B can withstand time and circumstances. From the moment A realized that he had fallen for B (7, Eighteen, Summer), B became someone he strongly desired and without B, A could never be satisfied. So, any new relationship would be meaningless to A. In 9A, Eighteen, Summer, A described his one-sided first love as: "a basketball game played with billiard balls or a letter with the wrong address. No matter how hard he threw it, it didn't come back and he couldn't expect a reply."

Their interactions in the past might be few, but each interaction was purposeful and memorable. And even after they separated, A kept up to date about B by watching videos of B playing Go and reading articles about B. A would watch the videos to the end, but his focus was never the gameplay but rather B's hands (No wonder A never learned how to play Go lol).

Despite his outward appearance, A's mentality is more delicate than he appears. As A said in 17, Twenty-Seven, Winter, Part 8: "Their relationship was like a thin thread that could snap with just a turned off phone." He was jealous of Seungbin and Instructor Lim because they belonged to the same world as B and understood B to a greater degree than he did. His jealousy of Go players doesn't seem unfounded, and I believe it's also the author's way of saying that B's exes play Go (which makes sense since B doesn't seem to interact with others, besides family, outside of Go). Even after they reconciled and cleared up past misunderstandings, the nightmare of failing to hold onto B during the High School Graduation still makes A cry: "The moment of letting go of something he earnestly desired was vivid and painfully engraved, as if it carved with a knife" (19, Twenty-Eight, Winter).

Unlike A, B had dated other people within their eight years apart (Booklet - interview w/ J. Soori). While this was never explicitly mentioned in the novel, I find this part significant because it showed how A and B tackled their problems. I also appreciate how it was never a main source of conflict as past relationships shouldn't shake the foundations of a current one.

A cherished his first love and made sure to keep his feelings strong. He wished to reunite with B but was afraid to actively seek out B, whose feelings were unknown. I think to a certain extent, A chose to reunite with B once he became more presentable and at a somewhat equal standing as B (reminder: A's dream was to be a diplomat and now he is an office worker for a prestigious company). Knowing that B would likely not come to the reunion that coincided with the Gihwa competition, A still took the risk and gambled with fate, even later provoking B with brazen statements that hid his own insecurities. Unlike his teenage self, 27-year-old A now knew how to read B better -- his true feelings were revealed in his eyes. He saw that B also yearned for him. Unable to contain the overwhelming emotions that had built up over the years and realizing that the man he so desired had reciprocated them, A had a strong urge to become one with B -- to give in to that animal within and to contain that missing piece. A's actions are quite foolish, but his love has always been hidden in plain sight.

While A's decisions are driven by emotion and animalistic instincts, B makes decisions grounded in reality and logic (coming from his background as a Gisa). B's mindset serves as a defense mechanism, to prevent B from getting hurt. But as a double-edge sword, this also stumps B's emotional growth as B is not truthful with himself. After graduation, B knew he would never cross paths with A again, so he chose to bury his feelings and start anew. To be able to date others signified letting go of the past and focusing on the present. However, B's decision to abandon reason, and therefore his underlying principles, in order to be with A planted a seed of doubt in his mind. Their relationship progressed too fast, resulting in a first experience filled with contradicting feelings of pleasure and despair, and later, a constant questioning of whether A truly loves him.

In 17, Twenty-Seven, Winter Part 2, B's mom asked B, "Do you have a girlfriend?" to which B remained silent. J, sensing this silence, grew red in the face and quickly tried to distract Mom by switching TV channels. Mom, not distracted, said "Secretly date or something. Living like a priest, who knows when you'll get married." From this interaction, it is implied that:

  • J knew about B's past dating history and has deduced that he is currently seeing someone (A)
  • Mom didn't know that B had dated before and that he is gay

The guys B dated before might have been similar in personality to younger A, as B stated in 12, Nineteen, Winter, he likes warm and bright people who were inherently kind-hearted, something that B does not believe he himself possesses. In 17, Twenty-Seven, Winter, Part 12, after their breakup, A received a phone call from J revealing B's past relationship issues:

"No matter how hard it may be, [B is] not the type to hold onto someone first. He'll endure it for as long as he can, he'd rather dry up and die than cling to someone and beg them not to leave. I want you to know that even if he says something cold on the outside, he may not mean it."

This reveals that in his past relationships, B was always approached first, but never proactively participated, possibly leading to misunderstandings. "[B] had been misunderstood countless times in his life and had failed to explain most of them. In other words, he had a talent for being misunderstood but badly lacked the ability to clarify himself" (14, Twenty-Seven, Winter). He was portrayed as a cold lover, eventually leading to breakups and periods of slump. No matter how serious the relationship was, B would rather give up than try to make them work out. But none of his past relationship troubles had as great of an impact as B's break up with A -- indicative of how important their relationship was to B -- such that J was even worried something bad might happen to B if A does not intervene.

B thought his feelings for A had disappeared along with time, but the reunion text coupled with his desire to see A showed that B still had lingering attachments to A. His inability to let go of A's White T-shirt also hinted that B's feelings were stronger than he made them out to be.

In 17, Twenty-Seven, Winter Part 5, B stated that his first love for A was born from his admiration for A and later from wanting to become A. Yet, the 27-year-old B questioned whether he could call his current feelings something as serious as "love." B knew he was drawn to A, he wanted A. However, he was afraid of admitting that his feelings were deep because he didn't view himself as worthy of A's affections nor did he want to dive deep into those emotions for fear of being abandon by A, whose intentions B couldn't understand.

B's turmoil in his relationship with A was that, unlike his previous relationships, B was constantly losing to A, his pride and ego defeated. He desperately wanted to hold onto A. A's existence was just like the Gihwa match with Taishan, so B had to give up on A (give up on move 105) in order to become himself again (in order to find an alternative path for a potential win) (17, Twenty-Seven, Part 10).

However, in 17, Twenty-Seven, Part 12, when B met with A for the first time after the breakup, B was ready to give up everything just to be with A. This shows that B's emotional side had defeated his logical side. The White T-shirt being in B's bag hinted that if B had not met A in the parking lot, B would have driven to A's place to explain to him the truth about the White T-shirt and beg him to reconcile. The White T-shirt symbolizes B's weakness: his shame and desire to cling onto A, and his pitiful one-sided love for A that never vanished. B was willing to show this vulnerable side to A because he realized that despite failing as A's lover -- and even if A didn't love him anymore -- he wanted to be more proactive in the relationship to become a better lover, so please love him back.

"I lost [...] I'm so afraid of losing you, I like you too much [...] I think I could give up anything [...] I'll try harder, so once, just this once [...]"

However, before he could finish saying this, A tells B: "You don't have to give up anything [...] Just don't push me away."

A and B's relationship has never been a game of (professional) Go as B perceived it to be. In a game of Go, there will always be a losing side. Both believed at some point in their relationship (whether at age 18 or age 27) that they had lost to the other person, not realizing that the other person was waiting for them (ugh, the fitness testing scene will always grab my heart). Rather, I'd like to perceive their relationship as a game of A's version of Go, where pieces can move back and forth and rules can be broken, a game where winning or losing doesn't matter. Like the scene above, when B decides to give up his integrity to beg A to return, A stops B from doing so, reassuring B that he still loves him.

A and B were both inexperienced with love. (Although B had more dating experience, he never learned to depend on the other person or be more honest with them. A became the one relationship B was too scared to lose.) They didn't realize that love is meant to be intoxicating, vulnerable, to break apart the walls you set up, and swallow your pride. Love is about missing that person, worrying about that person, wanting to be with that person, wanting that person to be happy, and wanting to know everything about that person.

[collapse]

Well... thanks for coming to my TED Talk. Please read this novel if you love angst, slow-burn, and unrequited love. I would also recommend viewing the other media (manhwa and animation) for further nuance. <<less

What an endearing and intimate story. There are many lovely things about it!. The writing is fantastic, the pace, the different POV's, the raw and innocent feelings. I never read the manhwa or watched the animation so I had no expectations other than how much I loved Semantic Error. They do have a really quick mention about Veggie Adventure's, which was the way the author found to tell us how their story is doing, since the game was an analogy of their story. And if you like Go, Weiqi, Baduk,... more>> whichever name you prefer, you're in for a treat.

Spoiler

There's a wonderful chapter where our Go player is going through some crazy disarray of feelings, and he's venting on a Go game, we get described beautifully the whole storm in his head through Go moves, which is a small glimpse into his mind and his world, and his opponent, the only person that could get it a that point, just asks "why are you treating me like a punching bag?" Ah, just wonderful! And in that same note, and nothing related, it made me realize how blessed Choi Taek was in Reply 1988 to have such amazing friends while growing up

[collapse]

And then, there were the lovely, candid and insightful remarks and footnotes of the translator, who just gave the whole thing even more soul and wholesomeness and did an amazing job at translating.

This was such an enjoyable read! <<less

After watching the animation and reading the manhwa, I was so happy to discover that there was a novel and that someone was translating it in English! This love story had such a strong impression on me. So simple but so deeply emotional and raw. I feel like this novel was able to capture all this from the original story and gave us more insights into the characters. It was a joy reading more about Seonho and Myeong and having access to their inner struggles. Seeing them coming together after... more>> so long and after facing so many obstacles was also really rewarding and beautiful. I loved every minute of it and I reread some chapters multiples times!

Talking about rereading chapters, I think one of my favourite was the one where Seonho comes to the realization that he has a crush on Myeong (v1c6). His turmoil was so well written, it made me feel all kinds of emotions.

I also want to point out that I just adored the footnotes and the translator’s commentaries at the end of each chapters! I was always looking forward to them because it felt like reading with someone else. I hope they will stay in the final version of the translation!

All this to say, it was an amazing read and a touching story that will follow me for a long time. It’s bittersweet to see this novel end when you have been reading it updates after updates for 6 months but it was worth it!

Thank you immensely to the translator who made this available for us who can’t read Korean novels! I can’t wait for the compile version! <<less

Loved this novel! If you’ve found this after watching the anime, the novel gives the back story of the two characters and even has POV from both. This really helped to explain why the MC and ML behave as they do in the present day. The translation is really good, with lots of footnotes to explain different terms and nuances. I hope the translator will publish future works as this was so well done.
