With the rising tide of steam power and machinery, who can come close to being a Beyonder? Shrouded in the fog of history and darkness, who or what is the lurking evil that murmurs into our ears?

Waking up to be faced with a string of mysteries, Zhou Mingrui finds himself reincarnated as Klein Moretti in an alternate Victorian-era world where he sees a world filled with machinery, cannons, dreadnoughts, airships, different machines, as well as Potions, Divination, Hexes, Tarot Cards, Sealed Artifacts…

The Light continues to shine but mystery has never gone far. Follow Klein as he finds himself entangled with the Churches of the world—both orthodox and unorthodox—while he slowly develops newfound powers thanks to the Beyonder potions.

Like the corresponding tarot card, The Fool, which is numbered 0—a number of unlimited potential—this is the legend of “The Fool”.

I rarely review stories that I have read but this novel was so amazing that I just had to. This novel was of such high quality that it really was a breath of fresh air compared to the other Transmigration type novels.

This novel is about a man who had reincarnated to an alternate world where mysticism and fantasy magic/abilities is present. The novel follows his journey to growing stronger in this world and to return to his own world.

The story is a bit slow but it is compensated with the... more>> great world-building. The author goes to great length setting the world up and really managed to make me be able to immerse myself in the universe.

This novel reminds me of Sherlock Holmes and other similar type of novels as most of the time he is investigating and learning about the world as he progresses.

This is not a romance novel, at least as of yet (c.579).

There is no brain dead antagonist, at least as of yet (c.579).

This is quality.

Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. <<less

At first, it was really hard to continue to read this (yeah, I endure the incredibly slow pace plot, although I did a skimmed-read method few times)

The good reason I stay

  • MC is not OP or a tycoon to the point I wish the author will give him more extra saving
  • MC is not the typical "I'll accept my fate and live here", he is (still) dedicated to look for a way to return
  • Although it has a slow pace plot, it has a detailed story and characters. Hmmm~ probably the author likes HP and/or TLOTR :P
  • No ridiculous harem
  • Family doesn't mean 'real' family, friend doesn't mean 'won't die or unhurt', enemy doesn't mean 'weaker than MC at first encounter'
The reason I want to abandon this

  • It has 'religious' aspect, but to create the 'True Creator' as 'Fallen Creator' (which is an evil god?) and the desc. about it, hmm... a religious person will find it as similar as racist. (Okay.. I have a limited vocab)
  • Slow pace in the beginning, since beginning. Although it has more things to discuss rather than fill the 'word-amount' with not-so important thing (such as 'clean bathroom')

Finished reading this a year or so ago and I forgot to make a review.

Actually so good wtf. I was a bit intimidated by the number of chapters at first but it's so good and so worth it. Failing my exams to read this instead of studying was worth it (Kidding I never fail an exam. Not jinxing it). This is mind breakingly good. Just stating the truth.

Plot 10/10

... more>> World Building 10/10

Character design 10/10

Power System 10/10

Relationship dynamics between characters is a 10/10

It's an all-rounder. I don't know what's inside the author's head, I want to learn their secret.

I'm actually amazed how the author keeps track of the subplots and what's happening because there's no noticeable loose ends in the story.

This also fits my palette just right because I've always loved cosmic horror and weird fiction so much. And this combined with chinese novel kind of plot flow and plot elements, it's so perfect I can't ask for anything more really.

The first few chapters might be a little mind-numbingly boring but I swear the build up was necessary because it's the base and everything after that is just so thrilling and exciting and you just can't stop reading it after that.

Just try. I've been trying to convince my brother to read it and he just won't budge. I need someone to talk about it. The knowledge of this amazing book just can't stay within me, I have to share it.

Will reread this again once I have the time <<less

Sorry for my language, it was translated with Google Translation. I'm at the stage where I've come to terms with the fact that I probably won't experience any new feelings from any novels again. It becomes normal to feel like every story you read is the same. Most of the novels I've come across aren't the ones that create their own characters, worlds, and plots like a novel should. But it is a ready-made type of novel that copies the structure of a successful novel and mixes it with what... more>> people want (such as acceptance, being superior to others, women, op power).

And I found this novel. It was like I had just read a novel that was actually a novel. In another story I have no more excitement for portals or evil sects. Although inspired by the Lovecraftian Mythos, SCP Foundation, and Bloodborne, the novel still has something of its own. This stirs up excitement about what will happen or what the enemy really is. It's both a blessing and a curse. Because I will probably be comparing this novel as the standard with others from now on.

It's not a novel where the world revolves around MC. But it's a MC chasing after the world so as not to be swallowed up by the world. He had to strengthen himself by accumulating power, experience, and information that made him aware of the world's situation. Maximize power and vision to achieve goals. But what is reasonable is How can a thousand year old enemy who has more of those things than MC lose to him? So run, and what reason do they have to wait for him to grow up when they have already found him? Why let the human who was the key to power go without taking advantage of him? But it all makes sense and there's a reason for it to be the way it is. No one in the story is s*upid.

The way to judge whether or not a novel is enjoyable is to read it yourself. The first 200 chapters seemed boring. But it is necessary. How can we feel that the protagonist has become a god if he is not familiar with being an ordinary person? During that time, I was disappointed with his personality. Because I thought he was a cold person because I saw him from fan art. But when I finished reading I want my son who loves delicious food, money, and lampooning back. <<less

I only have few words for this novel.... brilliant and beautiful. A 5 out of 5 !!! :)

It's a masterpiece. If I could print it and put on my shelf I would. It's a bit slow in the beginning but you must push through to at least chapter 10. Personally this was a problem for me in the beginning but I soldiered on. After the first arc I was sold and loved every minute. (If not sold after 10 chapters just push yourself to chapter 30 it will be... more>> worth it !!!) . Also it's very long but by the ending you're going to feel like it's too short. The MC is smart and sensible not a idiot that runs around causing unnecessary trouble. The side character were amazing and interesting. Great plot twists and turns. The villains are smart and a real threat. Little to no plot holes and plot armour. Also no harem and no romance.

If you don't like mysteries, action and a little bit of horror..... then still try it ;) Also be prepared for the Author to break your heart a few times though. Also the authors other works are also great. <<less

Dont let the 1k+ chaps intimidate u, this novel is AMAZING. A literal masterpiece. Its a steampunk victorian era world with lovecraftian elements, heavily focused on occult and supernatural powers. The worldbuilding is incredible. The power system is really cool and unique. The characters are really fleshed out and well written relationship/interactions between them. Lots of angst!! The beginning is slowpaced because of worldbuilding and infodump but it will pick up soon enough. THIS IS UR SIGN TO READ IT RN !!!!

"We are guardians, but also a bunch of miserable wretches that are constantly fighting against threats and madness."
-
Story ★★★★★ - Setting, World-Building, power system and its drawbacks, everything is well built and intricate, at certain times it's even good for you to stop to "digest" what's happening, because it can be a lot of information coming at once XD.
-
Character ★★★★★ - In my humble opinion, all the characters of the "main core" have their development, even more than the same development, come through the "potion" that each one took and the reality that surrounds them, whether in the Nobility or at Sea as a Sailor and the interaction with each other.
-
Enjoyment ★★★★★ - Here's a warning, the start is slow, and for some readers it might be BORING, but give it a chance! The setting in the Lovecraft style, with Mystic elements from various cultures, the author created it very intricate, I have no doubt that there was a good research to use as a reference XD! In several moments the work has its moments of tension, those that you think "sh*t happened XD", and the heartbreaking moments are some, but when they come, they come with force :c !
-
General ★★★★★ & 10/10 - This was the WN CN that made me have a little more faith in works of CN origin, the only one I had read so far was Tales of Demon's and Gods, and if you've spent a considerable amount of time in this endeavor as a reader, You must have already come across this disgrace XD, anyway!
I recommend picking it up to read, it's a content that can sometimes be very dense, very relaxing and in some very sad, even more so when it addresses the situation of poor residents, it's heartbreaking :c.

If you read this review thank you very much and may The Fool bless you XD!

Absolute masterpiece of a webnovel.

I would agree that it has a little slower start, but that doesn't mean it's bad.

Great worldbuilding, good "magic" system (everyone needs to use rituals, candles and ingredients till the very end, there's no "now everyone can do X freely") and the incredible foreshadowing. I love how seemingly random piece of information or person can influence things 200/400/1000 chapters later.

... more>> I loved characters and their interactions, loved how they were slowly changing as the plot progressed.

If you start reading it and you don't know what to think of it, try completing vol. 1 (ch.213). That was incredible climax and I love how there's one afterwards every 200-300 chapters. And last 100 chapters are pure Mr Bones Wild Ride with things happening every second.

"Every journey has its destination." and good god, I really teared up as I finished the last few chapters.

I have always been on NU for a long time but first time writing a review, this is because this book is beautiful and I just had to write a review, forgive me if there are mistakes.

I really liked the built-up tension and the mysteries. I also like how side characters have their own thoughts, personalities, and flaws. I know many do not want to wait for a second book but I was so happy when it did not end, I hope for The Fool to come back! I... more>> am VERY biased towards the first novel I've read but I prefer LOTM better, that says SOMETHING. This was a beautiful story with emotion, everybody had their shine and character. The plot twists the foreshadowing, man everything was planned out

I see some people just dropping the novel because it's too slow-paced, wait until the later chapters it gets excellent, as for those saying that there are too many fillers well it's to build up tension, plus you can't just expect the MC to fight every chapter. Everything in LOTM is planned out so you will very likely miss out on something if you skip the "fillers". It's OK If you don't like it that's completely fine but please don't just spit a bunch of hate words.

BTW the quotes shot me in the heart. I'm not fine.

Spoiler

The deaths such as Dunn Smith's and Old Kohler's were impactful...I will miss you It felt as if my soul and heart were ripped out when reading the end of the volumes. I wasn't crying (totally) but I had an unexplainable feeling

I normally only read KR stories, so when I decided to branch out to CN because I was running out of novels, I decided to start with the best. And it is amazing, for sure. There's a reason this is regarded as one of the best web novels of all time. The novel does a very good job with the pacing, the action chapters feel so fast that I felt hurried just reading them. That's a sign of a good story. It's obvious that Cuttlefish planned the story ahead of... more>> time. Events feel natural and are set up properly. The plot flows well and is pervaded with mystery.

I quite like the power system in this novel, it's self-consistent and doesn't feel contrived. That being said, one thing I don't like that much is that the power system is too rigid. People of a lower sequence literally can never beat people of a higher sequence, even if it's just a one sequence difference, without SERIOUS help. The power gap between sequences is too big. Other than that, it was great. It was unique and fresh. Klein's progress was always steady thanks to the good pacing. The growth of the Tarot Club also felt good, like seeing your party grow stronger in an RPG. I just wish that the Tarot members kept up with Klein a little more, as he just leaves them all in the dust in his journey to become a Sequence 0 True God. I guess it makes sense that they can't all keep up with him since he's the MC and has MC privilege.

There isn't much to say, this is just a masterfully crafted novel. I have almost no problems with it. My biggest and only complaint with the story is that it's not finished. I wasn't aware this was the first novel in a trilogy, so I felt kind of let down by the ending because now I have to wait. That's hardly a big flaw, anyways. It just means that there are two entire novels of greatness waiting to be written. <<less

Good book and an excellent lovecraftian progression fantasy

1. Well researched and intricate power system using potions to advance into Eldritch monstrosities

2. Compelling and smart protagonist. Klein is a person that is grounded to realism; you as an omniscient reader are shown all the cards the MC have and can theorise what he can do. Scholarly at heart and a perfect protagonist to explore the mysticism of the world. A flawed hypocrite but means well and lover of justice

... more>> 3. Mature cast although but could have used more screen time

4. Good world building. It does comes off putting and info dumpy but necessary nonetheless.

5. Smart and have the most creative fights I've read in a long time.

There's really not much negative to say, this is the complete package. Everything it does, is at a high level. <<less

Dude transmigrated to another world with steampunk and magic after su*cide of original body owner. Novel about discovering this world secrets, starting with this su*cide... a lot of bloodborne/lovecraft/SCP vibes.

Great plot with a lot of foreshadowing. Great characters. Great worldbuilding. Some small (really small, trust me) downsides, one is no romance, despite some hints, maybe in the later books, another downside is sometimes novel is too descriptive about irrelevant things.

Just read any 5 star review for more details, but better read this novel, it deserves your time, trust me. Probably... more>> the best work on this site, thanks to this novel I remembered why I like reading. <<less

I can't explain how much I love LOTM! It was a bit rushed at the end but it's okay since we're getting Book 2!

Just like what the others said, it was a slow start but don't drop it yet. At least finish Season 1/Volume 1 before deciding whether to drop or continue.

Spoiler

There's no romance and I hope it stays that way!

Everyone has said it all: good worldbuilding, excellent power system and fight choreography, memorable characters and well written interactions, and witty humor. Main thing to take note while reading: this story is super bingeable, but a lot of the world building demands you take it in slowly enough and digest so that you can recall it later when stuff gets mentioned many chapters later. A lot of fans will reread to get the details that they missed the first round, so don't feel bad if you have to continue on... more>> with a few confusions. GO READ IT! Easily one of my favorite reads ever.

LotM is a Victorian mystery/dark fantasy novel with a lot of inspiration drawing from dark fantasies and horror like H. P. Lovecraft, Soulsborne games, and Assassin's Creed games; Gothic fictions/tragedies like Dorian Gray and Poe; travelogues and adventure stories like the Pirates of the Caribbean and Treasure Island; and a fusion of mythos between the Lord of the Rings and Cthulhu. Pretty much any dark fantasy you can think of, you'll find some of it here. I've actually gained a newfound... more>> appreciation for the dark fantasy genre after reading this novel, so I hope these comparisons can give a feeler for anyone who hasn't read it yet.

If you like world building and mythology, this is for you. If you're leaning in on a more simple story with brute force combat and action with an OP MC, maybe not. If you want romance, you will unfortunately find none of it in this novel. Either way, just go give it a try regardless.

REVIEW:

Solid world building, a lot of fleshed out characters, and interestingly written fights that rely more on wit, planning, and fantastical powers instead of brute force. Learning bits and pieces of mythos and history from different POVs while piecing them all together was a joy to read, and the author put a lot of thought and research into everything. The MC's story and pathway for the whole novel is set from the very beginning, and the reason for his transmigration is explained later on. He also assumes different identities throughout the novel, which is quite original and fresh to read.

The beginning is a bit slow, but it serves to expose information and set up the vast majority of the later events in the novel. The last 200 chapters felt a bit rushed, but everything that needed to be said was accomplished, and it was written very well regardless. The final arc especially was a sight to behold, and the main antagonist is very well written. The guy's not a flat character whatsoever. Any pacing issues were virtually solved after I re-read, as all the information I learned is comprehensively organized and connected. It all comes together at the end of the novel while leaving enough suspense for the reader to make guesses about what will happen.

I was also quite surprised to learn that this is the first installment of a trilogy, as it's rare for any WN to have a sequel, not to mention two of them. I will be keeping up with the sequels when they release. Happy reading! <<less

It's an amazingly well written mix of steampunk, xianxia, and Lovecraft. The power system is pretty interesting and unique, and the fights and such stay interesting until near the end. The MC isn't so OP he can always do everything himself so he has to rely on others, and he does it relatively intelligently. The comedy parts are usually pretty funny, and you grow to like most of the characters. I wasn't really expecting too much when I went into it because of the "caring" and "righteous" protagonist tags (trauma... more>> from JP MCs that refuse to kill bandits), but it ended up being one of my favorite novels despite the MC not being my preferred type. He definitely fits those two tags, but there were only a few instances where that got annoying; even those weren't too bad (like questioning a leader of an evil cult to make sure he's evil before killing him, as if evil cults ever have good leaders). I highly recommend giving it a read. <<less

This is the best novel I had ever read. At first I hesitated to try this because I always read xianxia, thinking like I can't get used to western magic type. So if anyone who is afraid to try new type, don't hesitate anymore. You won't regret it one bit. My advice is to have patience until 200 chapters. Everything will unfold there. What I love about this novel is how we can relate to power/God system. Like it's happening in real life. E.g. How we worship gods, the angels... more>> surrounding them, and how people with supernatural power coexist within our society, all are logical. Another fact I love about this novel is MC is not OP (in my opinion), he don't have strong fighting ability at the start, he can only help from the back so he always use his brain to fight, pretty smart MC. He prepared well, planned well before danger arrive infront of him. So in fight scene, u will be amazed how smart he is, how cool the fight scene is, using unique powers u never seen before. I will read this novel again before the second book come out. <<less

This is honestly my most favourite novel in the entire site. A world of mystery and intrigue, where fantasy and science comes together to create an addicting world of fantasy steampunk - plus the unique power system that involves consuming potions related to branches of Arcana that gives someone a specialised ability.
Nothing I can say will give this work the credit it deserves.

I really enjoyed the world building of this story which is something I rarely do. Even though the author goes into a little too much detail at times (and some things don't make perfect sense), I still found the main points to be very interesting. Especially the potion pathways, various gods, angels, factions as well as the overall history of the world.

As the main character grows stronger he starts to interface with more and more powerful people and slowly uncovers the truth behind important ancient events including the origins and... more>> plans of important beings. The pacing at the beginning is quite slow but it soon speeds up and almost becomes too fast. Towards the end it even felt a little bit rushed to me.

I think this is the first time I've read a story where the history of its world was actually interesting and relevant beyond the usual cookiecutter stuff like "it was stated in an old prophecy" or "the first demon lord caused the great calamity 100 years ago".

Compared to most of the "standard" novels out there the characters here felt mostly well thought out and have actual developments in my opinion. I have to admit that I'm not an expert on character building so I can't say much more about this. I can just say that I enjoyed them for what they were.

The reactions of the Tarot Club members to new developments and secrets were always especially satisfying to read about.

I would have loved it if the novel also had some romance or simply Klein opening up to someone. But you can't always have everything I suppose.

To make this simple and unstructured review a little more complete, here are some things worth criticizing about the novel:

    • The MC is so smart that it's almost hard to believe. It feels like he accurately analyzes every piece of information he gets and somehow almost always makes correct deductions based on them. I don't remember if this was maybe touched upon in the early chapters though. Maybe he was just a genius?
    • The story is very very open-ended, so much so that I'm almost disappointed by it. There is a particular extremely important event that is mentioned again and again but in the end the story stops before it even gets close to that event occurring...
    • I also didn't like the final 30 or so chapters. They basically just loosely retell parts of the original story in a new setting which felt really out of place and pointless. This made the end of the novel less enjoyable as well
    • The point that the grey fog is OP is valid but that honestly didn't make the novel any worse for me. The main character still often gets into extremely dangerous situations later on. Also, it kinda (?) makes sense with the added context from later in the story
    • Some of the abilities and explanations, especially towards the end of the novel, are rather hard to understand because of how strange their core concepts and rules are. The fights were still understandable though and the strangeness of the abilities made them more interesting to me
Final words: Just try the novel lol. And if you find yourself enjoying the first 50 to 100 chapters then it will probably mostly only get better as you keep reading until it falls off around chapter 1400. <<less
