With the rising tide of steam power and machinery, who can come close to being a Beyonder? Shrouded in the fog of history and darkness, who or what is the lurking evil that murmurs into our ears?

Waking up to be faced with a string of mysteries, Zhou Mingrui finds himself reincarnated as Klein Moretti in an alternate Victorian-era world where he sees a world filled with machinery, cannons, dreadnoughts, airships, different machines, as well as Potions, Divination, Hexes, Tarot Cards, Sealed Artifacts…

The Light continues to shine but mystery has never gone far. Follow Klein as he finds himself entangled with the Churches of the world—both orthodox and unorthodox—while he slowly develops newfound powers thanks to the Beyonder potions.

Like the corresponding tarot card, The Fool, which is numbered 0—a number of unlimited potential—this is the legend of “The Fool”.

This is legendary. Disregard all the criticism of people who expected a typical chinese cultivation novel under a facade of a pseudo-european fantasy, you must at least try this. Surely it is not without demerits (you can clearly see the inspiration sources leaking throughout the novel), but at worst it only lowers the overall value by a maybe -0.5, which still makes it a superb 4.5/5 novel. Unlike aforementioned "cultivation novels that wear a mask of european fantasy", this is a decent, high-quality stuff, comparable to Warlock of the Magus... more>> World in quality and eastern/western and modern/classic mythology and fantasy integration. If you google for it, you can find up to 1420+ chapters in english, not worse in translation quality than the initial chapters provided here.

TL;DR: just try it, chances are high you'll like it. <<less

Overall its a brilliant novel, great author, and a wonderful translation. Its now in my top three favorite novels next to Release that Witch.

This novel does a LOT of things right, and very little wrong. Trying to list all the good points will take too long, so instead im just going to finally vent whatever little frustrations I had.

    • I. hate. top hats. I. HATE. walking canes. They are the opposite of cool.. unfortunately the author mentions them quite often.
    • I hate curly haired baboons. Well, the way the author uses them as an insult or whatever. Feels like an inside joke that I as a reader share no humor in.
    • I wish this had at least a little romance, i.. IM ONLY ASKING FOR A LITTLE. Like if Klien and Audrey started to feel a sort of dependence on each other. She looks up to him for guidance and ability to keep them safe. He needs her to be an anchor for his mental health and humanity. Which leads them to cultivate a desire to protect each other.. just give me a little something T^T
    • Too much lore. The lore is good, but it just gets overwhelming and boring sometimes. I didn't understand most of it for the first 300-400 chapters until it started to finally piece together. I imagine reading the novel a second time will be very enlightening.
    • Very slow start. I pushed myself to keep reading because of all the great reviews (and it was worth it). At first, the only thing that kept me going was the tarot gatherings and divination club interactions. Eventually things started to pick up and get good. Although to be fair, the tarot gatherings are some of my favorite parts of the novel and always worth looking forward too.
    • I think I've realized that most of the time the novel isn't very exciting, but rather just interesting and captivating. However, when it does get exciting, it's REALLY good..
    • This doesn't happen often, but the author will once in a while waste a bunch of time by explaining how the MC could hypothetically approach the situation, but wont because of some other reason. The author did at some point justify this in a note, I don't remember the exact reason, but I thought it was reasonable.
    • Time skips... There aren't many of them, and most of them aren't very long, I but I just don't like time skips.. Especially when tarot gatherings are skipped. Even if they are super short.. just let me listen Audrey's greeting over and over again T^T. lol the time skips aren't bad in this novel, in fact they are very well done. Unlike other novels, it doesn't make me feel like ive lost something or missed anything. The author does a good job setting them up and unwinding them.
    • It is very slow paced which is a double edged sword. During good parts and interactions with other characters, I love it because the slower it is the longer I can enjoy it. But the majority of the novel isn't THAT exciting, so its gets a bit well.. slow.
Alright, anyway to people who are just starting to read it, here are some checkpoints to help you push through the slow start.

Chapter:

    • ~ 50: Not that boring anymore, some fun stuff happens.
    • ~ 120: Alright things start moving a bit now.
    • 165: Oh sh*t that just happened..
    • 209: HOLY SHJIT WHAT THE f*ck. YEEEESSS (still gives me goosebumps)
    • rest of the novel: has its ups and mehs, overall very good

The truth, one of the best novels I have read, the plot, the power system, characters and the setting are incredible and engaging, a very well accomplished novel.

And Amon is a very good character, he takes you out of the cliché of enemies who get s*upid when they meet the MC, Amon is like a super powerful and immortal fly that doesn't stop f*cking you, it makes you want to crush him so much that it frustrates you, that's why After you finish reading and you start to think and... more>> you realize that it is a very well achieved performance that appears early and continues to have importance until the end.

I read my fair share of novels, but I have to say that Lord of the Mysteries has surpassed most (if not all) of them.
The story is complex, deep and extremely captivating. There is no chapter that feels useless or forced, each one contributes in progressing the story.

The world building is extremely well done, it gives you a sense of dread and curiosity which in turn allows you to symphatize with the main cast and plot, as dread and curiosity are two factors that follow this novel from start to end.

The characters are deep, each having their own complex background. It's very easy to fall in love with them, their story will make you laugh and tear up in ways that very few novels are capable of. But one of the things this novel does best, is the development of said characters and their story.

The fights are really enjoyable to watch, they are well planned and the reason they happen in the first place does not feel forced. Every fight has a meaning and objective.
But one of the main factors that makes the fights so enjoyable, is the system that they are based upon. The magic and mysteries related to them, makes most Fantasy and Cultivation novels pale in comparison. I won't explain too much as the system itself is a very key factor in the plot, but I assure you that it will make you love this novel and force you to crave for more informaton in the wiki. (Yes, it has one. Beware of spoilers in there tho)

in conclusion, 5+/5
If I could I would give it even more. Definitely try this out, it's worth every second and line you read. (It currently has around 1417 chapters. All well translated.)

Best Chinese translation I've read hands down. Nothing compares in world depth, character building, or plot. Original idea after original idea, but filled with familiar western themes and history (very well researched). Lot of inspiration from Van Helsing and Lovecraft.

There's a great balance of humor and seriousness, joy and despair. But don't go in expecting something light. This is like stepping into Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones.

The translation is excellent (although hidden behind sh**** Webnovel paywall).

before: wtf, im not gonna read all those 1400+ chapters.

after: Kleiin⁉ Zhou Mingrui!!! T.T sobsobsobs

okay, kinda exaggerated. But you should get the point. It is very great novel, with very detailed world building, setting, conflicts and characterization/character development.

... more>> MC sometimes sounds very hypocritical, goody-two-shoes, but it's not like he won't kill evil people. And that's very humane. He is only a human like us, to emphatize innocents and hate evils. And at the end you'll understand why he insists on 'being human'.

to my own dismay.

anyway, I catch the characters are described pretty well, even some mobs characters were given names and backgrounds. When they died, you can't simply say "person A died". You can feel their grievances, while not being overly dramatic. Even mary-sue-like Audrey Hall was given a will of steel and matured well in the end.

the 'no romance' part is plus mark from me LOL. I just can't stand those harem and female chasing MC just because plot allows it. I prefer 1v1 all day. <<less

This is the best novel I've ever read and I may not have read hundred's of novels but I've still read ten's of them and none of them have such in-depth character development and world building. The plot of this novel is also creative and power up system is unique. Anyone who Read's this novel read it till volume 2 then make your decisions. In my opinion this is the best chinese novel if you're looking for great depth and an immersive story.

Hands down the best novel out! 10/10

It's got it all in terms of greatness;
- Writing/Plots & sub plots
- Meaningful characters (with a lot of depth)
- Interactions between characters
- Humor
- Action
- Suspense
- This novel is SO GOOD at conveying the sense of horror and dread & I absolutely love it!

Nothing else comes to mind, other than the fact it ZERO romance. Which I was kind of annoyed at, but just as quickly forgot about, because it definitely would've bought the novel down... as it does so often with SO MANY other novels with the shoe horned romances.

Would definitely recommend!

It's currently one of the few novels at the top of my 'definite recommend' list.

If you're a fan of intricate world building, then you'd probably love this as well. The translation quality could use some work though. The errors are slight but just enough to dampen it by a bit.

It starts off really slow at first—maybe the first volume or two— but there's just enough material to make you want to know more, even if it's not that exciting. The info dumps are quite moderate and most seemingly irrelevant information... more>> weave their way into the story later in a rather intricate manner. Although it could get a bit annoying having to read through a lot of details at once.

One con, though, is that the higher level battles quickly become quite hard to follow as they're usually quite complex.

Minor spoilers below:

Spoiler

I really like the way the author handled the deaths of some main characters. Each moment was touching in it's own way and they were each rather logical.

In hindsight, after seeing how powerful True Gods could be and ow meticulous their plans usually are, it seems kinda unlikely for a group of low sequence beyonders to have had to ability to stop the descent of the True Creator back in the first volume. Also, the True Creator seems to have been in the Forsaken Land of the Gods at hat moment and could probably have left anytime he wanted.

[collapse]

More spoilers about the ending:

Spoiler

After Klein became a demigod, it started to seem easier to digest his potions and to get new potion ingredients than it was when he was a mid sequence beyonder. These things should get more difficult, right..?

About the ending now... He basically became a peak King of Angels then a God at a go. Although it was a difficult trade with his sanity, I kinda feel that should have taken longer.

The novel seemed to wrap up a bit to abruptly. It's a rather open ending that leaves us unsure about his current state. I kinda like it tho, cause this is owing to the risks he took right when he tried to accommodate the Uniqueness of the Fool pathway. Now we'll never know what happens with the outer deities during the apocalypse, never find out Emperor Roselle's fate, or even Klein's fate, much less the Tarot club members and Klein's few acquaintances/friends. It's not the most satisfying ending, but it's still better than a whole lot of webnovels out there.

One of my favourite characters towards the end was Amon. He matched Klein in every way and definitely exceeded him in at least a couple. He' got to be the best 'villain' in the novel—even though He wasn't really a villain.

[collapse]

Anyway, the novel is worth a shot if you're still hesitant.

Probably one of the better chinese novels out there. Its not perfect, but its by far way above in quality compared to the many other tr*sh chinese novels out there.

For the Positives:

I love the occult and lovecraft themes in it along with the focus on the mystery aspect. Its a refreshing change from the usual xianxia, xuanhuan, transmigrator, regressor etc themes plaguing the current trends. Although its sorta transmigrator genre but its different, I won't spoil it. The setting is a mix of the industrial revolution age and the renaissance... more>> victorian age, its interesting how the author mix and match the technology and society levels from various eras of humanity and made it somewhat realistic and believable, especially with the presence of the occult and mysticism. There are also traces of political bureacacy intertwined with agendas from many secret organizations which makes the plot much more mysterious and engaging. Overall good job with the world building, premise and setting.

Author also created a unique power/leveling system revolving around alchemy thats very detailed, its not the RPG leveling system or the immortal law cultivation system but it does borrow features from both with inspiration from the occult and rituals, that said it has its issues.

The protagonist relies on his own smarts and intelligence to overcome obstacles. Meticulous planning, collecting sufficient intel on the enemy, concocting schemes, having backup plans, the importance of cunning and guile, along with quick thinking and wits are part of his trade and crucial for his survival, although sadly, not much of this happens later on in the novel. To be frank this is the only quality I like about the protagonist.

The absence of romance is a welcomed changed. More often then not romance tends to get in the way of good story telling. I can't understand why readers have a hard on romance and harem in these kinda novel genre. If you crave love so badly go read a real romance novel?

This novel also has variety and unique cast of characters. No matter the companions, prime antagonists, secondary characters in respective arcs, they are reasonably well written and have somewhat lasting relevance throughout the different arcs of the novel.

For the Negatives:

Plotholes and over reliance on plot conveniences in the storyline towards the later half of the novel. The more complex and complicated the story is, the higher the chances of plotholes. Author did try to cover his bases but he does that by introducing plot conveniences, i.e. author magic. One of the most damnable being the "divination" and "fate" concept loophole. Remember when I mentioned the power system has its flaws? Its easy to abuse especially when the protagonist gets a super upgraded version of it. Initially the protagonist's approach to obstacles was via thorough investigations, analyzing and well thought out deduction as well as careful actions to cover his tracks however later on its all about using "divination" to sense future outcomes or reveal the individuals involved and using "anti-divination" abilities to hide his footprints. Author exploits this too aggressively to plug the plotholes that it becomes jarringly obvious. Theres also another example where the protagonist's artefact magically and suddenly gets the ability to steal high sequence abilities from other artefacts when its been mentioned that its impossible, coincidentally this is right before a high stake operation, its unexplained so might be an oversight. These are just two examples. I'm someone who likes to overanalyze and dissect the medium I'm reading to fully understand the story, so for normal readers this may not be an issue but I still have to say the plot conveniences are too pronounce especially in the late chapters when the underlying conspiracies are revealed and author wants to steer the story towards a specific direction, some things just don't make sense and others remained unanswered, presumably as part of the mystery element.

The narrative and writing is superb at the start till the middle of the novel but after that it just deteriorates. Its pretty obvious when you see the quality of writing towards the last 400-500 chapters take a huge dive. One of the primary fault is author's over reliance on plot conveniences mentioned before, it gets too overused towards the late chapters such that everything is explained via plot conveniences. Rushing the final few acts into a condensed mess is the other major culprit. Several subplots in the beginning had meticulous care for the buildup, clues and hints of being interconnected to the main plot but towards the later chapters these subplots suddenly wrap up. Author magically throws up facts out of nowhere to piece everything together and justify the conclusion, an example being the mystery surrounding his teacher. Its like these subplots are half cooked and have not been baked enough, clearly hinting on author trying to rush and conclude the different stories. The narrative does not flow organically. Basically author expends a lot of effort for the buildup of the story only to waste it away in later chapters with convoluted plot riddled with inconsistencies and lazy writing. The pacing of the novel is problematic and its no secret. Quite a number of the negative reviews are due to the pacing. This novel has an excruciating slow start that tend to deter readers. The late parts of the novel on the other hand are rushed and feel underdeveloped. If you've read Coiling Dragon, you'd understand, that novel is pretty popular but infamous for its rushed late story and atrocious ending. Expect the same in LotM.

I did say I like the protagonist for being the resourceful and thinker type. However later on in the novel, author basically bombards him with ridiculous advantages like overpowered abilities, items and outside help. In fact he received a ridiculously overpowered advantage from the start of the novel, an endgame item at that. All of this essentially overshadows the protagonist's personal strengths and appeal. Consequently this curbs the character development of the protagonist. The plot armor made his progress too easy. He does not experience any significant failures or setbacks like losing major companions or overpowered advantages, no mistakes to learn from, no obstacles to temper himself with, basically theres no turning point to evolve his character.

The essence of this novel is about the descent to madness as you stare into the abyss the abyss stares back at you, godhood was not meant for mortals and has a unimaginable price, strength (whether to protect or to kill) comes with sacrifice, these are the Lovecraftian themes author drew inspiration from. For example the promotion requirements for certain Sequences (class/archetype) requires creating a disaster or solving a disaster, the former you'd just cause a plague while for the latter, you'd spread a plague and then cure it. This is the underlying aspect of the Sequence system and the world, it is sinister, grim and dark. Conveniently, our MC gets to bypass all of these, absolutely makes no sense in the context of the world.

This is further exacerbated by the fact that our MC is someone with strong morals and righteousness. Its not wrong, many heros in other novels are like that but without proper character development it makes our MC look naive and immature, and he stays that way till the end, a brat. Other side characters like the Evernight Goddess and Emperor Roselle have much more character development and story behind them despite being a background character. Roselle for instance, we only get some insights into his life via the few recovered diary pages, initially he seems like the typical immature brat however reading further into his diaries, we see him evolve. From the carefree "self proclaimed protagonist" lifestyle, his pe*verted tendencies, his arrogance and self centered personality, to his reaction when he discovers the truth, his failures, companions he lost, his mistakes and lingering regrets, how he tries to turn things around, the madness and corruption affecting him, his family and his people, the compromises and difficult decisions he had to make, the people he had to hurt to protect, the struggles and sacrifices needed. He matures a lot, much more than our MC. A background character like Roselle who only had a few chapters of screentime has a more three dimensional character than our protagonist.

Lastly are the other characters, this novel has a huge cast of characters. They are likeable, even the antagonists but maybe due to having too many characters theres lesser opportunities for proper character development and presence across the different subplots. I like that author tries to maintain their relevance throughout the novel and create interesting backgrounds for them but I wished author gave them more time in the limelight as well as further flesh out their evolution as a character in a supporting role and also higher focus on their character development.

To sum it all up, this novel has a solid start and mid but falls apart towards the end. To be honest the only reason this novel has a high score from me is due to the exceptional storytelling in the first half of the novel. Pass that I find myself struggling to enjoy and immerse myself in the story. I try to be lenient (i did give it a pretty high score) but I still have to stay objective with the review. Author's overuse of plot conveniences in the later parts of the novel, the counter-intuitive decision of giving the protagonist absurd advantages that shatters his original character appeal which the author had painstakingly developed, coupled with the later rushed and condensed narrative as well as lacking character development for the supporting cast and especially the protagonist, are all too huge of a disappointment. Moreover I really feel the protagonist was a mismatch for the themes in this novel. I hope the author realize this and try to maintain the high quality writing from the first half of this novel and consider a different kind of protagonist for the upcoming sequel he has in mind. <<less

I finished reading it and I'm speechless.
The story was better than great, flawless... Wonderful.
A trip too short to leave readers wanting more.
Full of emotions, frustration and sadness all in one place.
The story was simply great.
His character development from start to finish, was simply incredible, without leaving the secondary characters there was always development.
The construction of the world, left me speechless... From the cities, the organizations and those 'existences', they leave you asking for more even at the end.
There is not much to say in the story, it is impeccable and personally I found no flaws... No, maybe the only flaw is that it leaves you wanting more even in the end.
The first chapters can be slow for some, in my case I loved them.
I recommend it and hope that others enjoy this wonderful story too.

AMAZING STORY!

I’ve read quite a lot of chinese novel until now but this novel is really unique, the setting is thickkk, detailed settings of historical events, cultures, cuisine, etc, especially the level system. Quite a number of novels have utilized tarot or Cthulhu images, but LotM is the first one I've seen that describe the Cthulhu vibe this good.

The protagonist’s advantages is also utilized reasonably, it does not make him too OP. The antagonist and side characters have developments and good settings too.

Just one thing that made me sad is... more>> that when I reached the near end of the story, the protagonist’s journey is filled with so much pain, it made me feel so sad when I rethink about it : ( <<less

This is the the most unique novel I read. Really, my feeling for this novel between love and hate. Hate for seeing my baby experiences hardships. Like enemies all sides. This novel is what you call no free meal, you know. If you want this or that then you lost or pay something for that thing. That kind of thing.

The world history is super unique. It like a new entire world and system. And author make the novel history relatable too. All the characters have dept and unique. There is no copy of cut-board character here. I like the idea of this author he making a deus ex machina as an ability of the villain.

If you read until vol.6, you will know there is no true evil and hero in this Beyonder world. Power and Madness is on the same coin call Beyonder. The reader can look at the... more>> character actions as hypocrite. As they only do good thing not because the goodness of their heart but for stability of their Beyonder power. Which mean there is no true evil guy too, the true evil is only someone who can't control their power and truly gone mad and these kind of guy is easily defeat and not appear as some major villain too. You can say that all the characters in this novel is hypocrite even the villain is hypocrite. LoL! You can't define them as good or bad only gray.

But I super like this concept though. It make the fight interesting.

People say the Beyonder system have fault but for me instead it is a charm. This kind of system can make the logical MC shine best. As there is information and fixed path so the logical MC can use the information to prepare to take advantage in the fight. He can use it to guess at of under lying plot too.

And what other complain about the system make the villain unable to change side or has a character development. I want to argue. There is an instance where I think this guy must be a super villain and later I find out that he help Klein and kind of... eh? are you an ally, why do you help Klein? You see even with this system, some possible villain can appear as ally too. Even though they have some kind of motive. LoL <<less

The best web novel to ever exist. Period.

Ok, to give an actual review, the first hundred or so chapters is more of a day to day life that sets the tone and helps with world building. He's just a guy trying to survive after being thrust into this victorian era/steampunk world, and he's slowly introduced to the Beyonder world. The book however, just keeps getting better and better as you go along. You might see the 1400 chapters and think that it's your standard filler with no real plot, but... more>> trust me, I've been rereading these 1400 chapters many many times, and every time I'll figure out something new. Im up to date with current translation and I've got to say I'm impressed by that novel. No other novel made me wait for its releases so long and made me so entertained. I find story and world created by author very coherent and well thought. Usually I'm very picky with this matter, but there is nothing to nag about. At least I don't remember such things.

After reading rewievs of people above, usually those that found problem with pace of action I can't really agree with them. Though I need... more>> to point sometimes I feel like im being fed with fillers, or sometimes I find factual errors, not sure if it's fault of Author or TL.

Regarding things pointed by Night Ghost rewiev, I can't really say if I find them to be bothersome, or if they are even errors. I see them as misinterpretation from side of reader.

One thing here, Author really isn't afraid of killing your favourite characters. He knows how to hit you with their deaths. But I have to admit he knows how to do that, and I can't blame him for using that as cheap emotion grasping moves.

Overall I rate it solid 5 since I've craved for such read since ages. Give it a go and see yourself if you like it. <<less

Well, here I am.

it's one OF THE BEST BOOKS, THAT I HAVE READ, and I had read a lot.....

some problems people might consider.

... more>> the pacing, it's indeed kinda slow (althought the start is super slow, but trust me it will go way better), and you will probably find a great quantity of the scenes and words desnecessary, but trust me, the majority of this is foreshadowing, and one done quite good.

It's a bit hard to understand some of the things in this novel.

also wait321 didn't read enough, MC faces death and almost dies quite often.

This novel is such a rare find! I can't believe there was such a gem hidden! The characters are very interesting and the pacing is impeccable. The fights well executed, realistic that you are able to easily picture in your head. This story is of a similar quality as a normal book. The only bad thing about this novel is that you won't be able to drop it once you start.

There are 22 pathways to deity hood known as sequences starting from sequence 9 where they are a bit more powerful than normal humans and sequence 0, where they become actual deities. Each sequence has a corresponding name such as Sequence 9: Seer, Sequence 8: Clown for the MC's sequence. To advance, the necessary ingredients must be made into the corresponding potion and consumed. The individual must "Act" according to the name of their current sequence to better "digest" the potion and be ready for advancement. So a seer would have to experiment and come up with some rules to better act as a seer.

MC's Cheat is an ancient weapon that he slowly gains control over as he move up in sequence. At the start, it only allows him goes to a special domain and allows him to pull a few people in. He masquerades as a recovering deity in this space and uses the members to collect additional information about the world. He also has a senior transmigrator senpai that he gets the group to collect diaries off that only he can decipher (Chinese).

MC's goal is to slowly gather more information about the world (There are alot of erased history and hidden organisations) and level up his sequence so that he can find a way back.
