Vicious Male Counterpart Isn’t Competing Anymore

Before he died, Yan Hao could never understand why his parents had always favored his younger brother. They spoiled his brother, and wouldn’t pay any attention to himself, no matter what he did.

The more this happened, the more indignant and upset Yan Hao became, so he began to compete with his brother in everything. As long as it was something his brother wanted to do, he would do it too, and outperform him.

He was obviously the one who was more talented, but from beginning to end he was never acknowledged by the people around him. His parents, teachers, and classmates all looked at him with disdain, claiming he was jealous and selfish, and liked to steal from others.

It wasn’t until his death that Yan Hao realized that he had been stealing from the protagonist. He was just a vicious male counterpart in a book to set up the kind hearted protagonist shou. A cannon fodder who existed to let the protagonist gong appear and to slap him in the face, so he could look good in front of the protagonist shou.

After he was reborn, Yan Hao kicked the protagonist away. Who the hell wants to compete with you? If laozi turned around, you wouldn’t be able to catch me even if you cried.

He wouldn’t fight anymore, and he wasn’t jealous. He just wanted to peacefully be himself, and let his light shine on the people who care about him.

Many years later, someone asked Yan Hao, who had become a master mecha engineer, “How did you get into mecha manufacturing?”

“Because I met someone.” Yan Hao.

I'm at Chapter 115 and I'm liking the novel so far! Also kudos to the great translations for producing excellent work.

I liked the world building of the novel. It's not too complicated but not bland either so it's easy to follow.

I don't consider the main characters OP as compared to the "son of heaven"s in other novels.

The MC is highly intelligent but not OP in a way that a Mary Sue novel is. He has high integrity in terms of his research that despite being able to go back in... more>> time, he does not still future research work from others.

The ML has an innate S-Level mental energy but the author did not just let him run rampant. The author still gave him a handicap that necessitates him to work hard.

The other characters don't just blindly like the MC either. They like him because he has a kind personality, intelligent mind, hardworking ethic. The good impression they have doesn't come out of nowhere. <<less

Despite giving it five-stars, I acknowledge this novel’s deficiencies. The MC was reborn with his knowledge of the future but emotionally seems stuck—and while we see some growth, it’s not as fleshed out as I’d like. There are some threads that are dropped, and the ending feels quite abrupt. And the title, while descriptive of the premise, doesn’t feel like it does justice to the whole.

But I still think it’s an excellent novel within this genre. The development of the mecha felt just detailed enough to satisfy, and the focus... more>> on the battles towards the end was gripping. And the ML is a lot more well-rounded than anything else I’ve read—you can see his struggles and root for him. And while their relationship was relatively smooth, it doesn’t get cloying because they both have their own goals and careers and friends. <<less

178 chapters and I still feel I want a little more 😭

The translations were fantastic but I got impatient and MTL'd the rest of it. With all the talk of math and mech building, I thought my brain was going explode, but it was surprisingly not too bad to get through.

Anyway: I was not expecting this novel to be as excellent as it was. The growth the MC has throughout the novel was absolutely perfect. I love how he's so firm in having absolutely nothing to do with the people... more>> who hurt him in his last life. There was no redemption for any of them his eyes and even if there was, once he cut them off he's not interested in following up and literally couldn't care less if they die.

And at the same time, the new feelings and relationships he cultivates (his friends, teachers, classmates), was all so touching and I felt that it has a very natural pacing. He becomes popular because he's nice and will help out his classmates--him being a genius just broke the ice.

Yes, MC is OP but the author makes great use of it. He doesn't try to be the best in pharmacy, its just that he has 10years of professional experience rooted in a time when medical advancement was so great (thanks to his brother). In his past life all his knowledge was common knowledge, so when it translates to this new life, it seems greater than it is. His true genius only shines in the field he's actually interested in and wants to innovate. It's refreshing to see an MC that doesn't want to conquer it all.

It's also refreshing to see an MC that is more OP and remains more OP than the ML until the ending.

10/10 would recommend this novel. One of the best bl mech novels I've read. <<less

Beside the ending was poorly written and the villains didn't get the punishments I want it for them,

Everything seems good, MC and ML are adorable haha. They are so cute together. I love ML fall first that type of meeting first day was pretty romantic

There;s alot of funny and good humor monologues.

... more>> I love the professors fighting for MC all the time and the way they pamper him

The side characters best friends are pretty awesome too

Majority of the novel is MC absorbing and learning more about Mecha I didn't find it boring.

There's alot more that can be explored but it seems that they don't want cannon fodders villains to do much

Also wheres out

I loved this. MC is sweet, naive etc but not so much that it's annoying.

I typically enjoy face slapping and I expected it here but it happens in very few instances which I unexpectedly enjoyed.

The focus is on MC and how he grows to focus on what he wants rather than being a stepping stone to the OG protagonist.

I skipped a lot if the mecha/med gibberish but some of it was interesting, I just didn't want to spend a longer time on it.

So a 5 from me.

Fluffy story and no heartbreak or angst. It’s a decent story with a ML that isn’t perfect and everyone thinks the ML is lucky to be with the MC. I only wish that the author wrote extras about the end. Like what happened after ML comprehended the wormholes, and more about what the MC realized about biological mechas.

I also wish Yan Fei’s character was done better. I feel like the story would have much more depth if he wasn’t just a villain. Yes, he was greedy and wished that everyone... more>> would love hi, more than his brother, but that’s actually quite common and not surprising considering how his parents treated him. He has a brother who is perfect so he only wishes that everyone would love him more than his brother out of jealousy. I was really upset about how he was just made out be useless and a villain without his brother, because from Yan Fei’s perspective, Yan Hao is now the villain. He doesn’t get any credit for his achievements just because he is the “villain”.

Still hoping that more authors will actually give the “villain” sinking characters more depth some days and actually work in their relationship, rather than making them outright bad.

Also I rlly wanna know what happened with the pirates? Like we only know they joined ML’s army, but that’s all. I felt like it was kinda useless and unnecessary addition, Baiting us with another Bl couple and not giving any bg on them. <<less

This was a fun read, and yes, I decided to binge the entire book in a short amount of time (I tend to do that a lot) but this was worth the staying up at 3am to finish. The ML and MC are so supportive of each other, but the story itself was great to read even if it didn't involve romance.

One thing that I have to say is that while it may have been a rebirth story, not the MC didn't spend all his time focusing on revenge. Infact,... more>> at the end of the story, said the main people that did harm in his last life aren't even mentioned anymore; the only person left that caused him trouble had a legitimate reason for being there, so their mentioning was fine in my opinion.

All in all, I am most certainly binging this story again. <<less

This novel is more on mecha aspect but the romance part is cute. I MTL this and it's easy to read although I skim a lot of the technical explanation of the Mechas. <<less

This one was surprisingly good? Maybe because I didn't really expect anything. There's a lot of mecha technicality and fighting more than the romance tho, that's the only downside I can think of.

I feel like super genius MC who has a inferiority complex is quite unique. In his previous life he was too obsessed with surpassing his brother, that's why he was described as "vicious". Well, he's also very naive (borderline s*upid) and has low EQ. In his new life, he tries to stop competing with his brother for his... more>> parents' love and people's recognition, and decided only to learn about something that he actually loves: manufacturing mecha.

Spoiler

What I don't understand is why did in his prev life he never learned anything about intellectual property laws at all even tho he was studying in a science research type major and also in a working environment for a decade. Like, come on.

[collapse]

I love the ML. He's not the overbearing and cold type, more of a playful and caring type. He's also very observant and considerate. He's also not super OP because he has an injury from an accident when he was a child that prevents him to become a mecha fighter. MC's growth also contributed a lot to his growth. Sooo point plus for me.

The villains are mostly braindead especially his parents, they don't show up often but I feel like they don't deserve to be a parent at all. MC's brother:
Spoiler

started off as a s*upid white lotus who actually knows nothing into... an annoying green tea b*tch. I wish he stayed innocent and actually had a positive character development but alas...

Not usually a fan of mecha novels with school tropes, but this one kept me hooked the entire time! I really like it, honestly hope there's more extras to be honest.

Although the MC was annoying at the beginning, I feel satisfied with how much of the novel focuses on mecha studies and really dives into research elements. It was very fun and super engaging to me, I really enjoyed that aspect as well as how it doesn't neglect the romance, and didn't overload on the romance.

I feel like the CP... more>> is quite cute, although it started off kind of cliche the ML isn't all-powerful, and the dynamic shifted into the MC taking more initiative which I appreciate. Honestly I quite like this novel despite the parts that made me angry. Also some of the parts doesn't really feel like it wrapped up well -- what happened to the brother? Or the love rival/antagonist simu?? What about the old professors? Anyways it was fine <<less

What a little exciting story, and a great MC! The MC character growth was so well done and the MC touched my heart a lot of the time and I just wanted to love him forever!

Story does basically focus more on the technical aspect of me has and the fight against zergs but the romance between MC and ML is still very natural and sweet

Rating: 3.7/5

The novel employs commonly used interstellar tropes with mechas, zergs, military and mental power. It also employs other cliché tropes like a neglectful/abusive family, og. MC being a green tea b with a halo that auto-corrects plot deviations/ makes og. book characters feel favorable towards him. Basically, this whole novel is your standard scifi, interstellar BL novel minus the omegaverse.

What stood out to me was how much emphasis the author put on the military exploits compared to the relationship between the main leads. At times the MC and ML... more>> don't see each other for extended periods of times. Not seeing each other for a year and they are still fine. People in long distance relationships would probably shake their heads because they know how much of a strain the distance and lack of communication can put on a relationship.

In fact, the whole relationship between the main leads felt kinda bland. The MC's abysmally low EQ only adds to it. In my eyes, the MC is the same as a freshly hatched chick that got attached to the first one who was kind to him. And by kind I mean showed him the way to the exam room. Any Joe Schmo could have done the same and ended up with the MC. The ML was just lucky to be at the right place at the right time.

On a side note, it was kinda refreshing to see a younger brother ML who acts like a younger brother instead of the always mature and iceberg ML you typically get in these types of novels. Dude has aspirations and dreams and looks up to his big brother and father comparable to an innocent child.

Apropos innocent child, the MC still acts like a child even after having lived through his past life, having spent years in the workforce and had seen a lot of hardships. But he still ended up gullible, naive and overly trusting in this life. I kept thinking that it's a miracle how he hadn't gotten kidnapped yet by some man in a white van offering candy... And then he did get kidnapped... Albeit not by a man with a white van, but alas... His survival instincts hadn't really been online to begin with.

That aside, what happened to the antagonists? Og. MC and the parents just dropped off from the face of the planet. Where is my satisfying face-slapping, my karma and retribution? Even that greasy og. ML was just let off and disappeared sometime only to be mentioned in passing in the end...

This novel will leave you with an itch that you can't scratch. And in the end you feel like (-_-) ノ⌒┫ ┻ ┣ ┳ <<less

4.0 ⭐ (My finger slipped!)

Talk about drama! Talk about character growth! Talk about well-written romance. This is golden.

I put it at 4.0 because it did not actually touch my life the way some of the other novels in my 5.0 charter.

I MTL the rest which is quite easy to read but I will reread it when it's fully translated.

Loved it so much!

I felt distressed for the MC's childhood when all he wanted was his parent's love. After his reborn, I'm happy that he finally has the ML, friends, classmates, teachers, etc that loved/respect him. While the MC is OP, it makes sense bc he actually spends time and effort to produce the results. The ML is also strong in his own way esp at the finale. They are so cute... more>> together.

As for the plot, it's quite common as it is against the Zerg but the finale did give me a thrill as everyone did their no matter what it costs. As for the ending, I hope there was more to the aftermath of everything and the couple. I want more of their sweet moments.

Out of curiosity, I also want to know what happens to Yanfei at the end as he wasn't mentioned at all in the ending even though I don't like him ofc.

Anyway, I still loved it. Recommended! <<less

This is an enjoyable, lighthearted read that I just finished re-reading. The story is well-paced and balanced between romance and plot so that you never end up feeling "bored" of what's currently happening.

Character: MC is absolutely lovable with a High IQ and Low EQ type of setting (which under usual circumstances annoys me to death) but author's characterization of him is straightforward enough that he's not one of those annoying dense protagonists that would cause me to drop the story. The character growth/realization over his insecurities from the neglect/abuse of... more>> his past life was well done and I very much enjoyed that this rebirth story was more about self realization-gratification rather than revenge. ML was also very lovable as unlike most semes/gongs he actually respects our MC and genuinely cares about for him.

Story/Plot: As mentioned earlier, very well paced and balanced/written so it's just enough to keep you hooked throughout. Although predictable (especially re-reading this) I still found myself reading everything with relish as I enjoy reading Interstellar themed novels for the tropes in it - which this story does very well. Definitely agree with others that the ending was a little rushed and would've enjoyed an extra chapter or two but regardless, solid story and highly enjoyable.

Warning: for folks who do not like low EQ protagonists, consider sticking it out for a bit, he does get better. There is some annoyance surrounding his old family/friends/teachers who 'abused' him and caused his insecurities and the lack of a clear resolution on what happened to him, but at least for me, the focus on the story on seeing MC's OPness and the relationship/interaction between MC/ML was much more enjoyable/important compared to that. <<less

An enjoyable read, nothing too serious with good writing. A fairly typical plot, with an uncomplicated and sincere romance.

The plot ends quite nicely, it's a little rushed in comparison with the exposition of earlier chapters, but gives a proper end point rather than a slow fade happily ever after.

There are some plot points that don't get tied up in the ending, but the tone and scale of the story changes quite dramatically so these small points seem newly insignificant in comparison to the final arc.

A fairly likeable MC, who's a... more>> bit overpowered with future knowledge and inherent genius, but who still has to dedicate himself to his new life to learn. He doesn't coast by using purely cheats. As others have said, his emotional perception is a little low, but he's straight forward enough that it's not another dense (TM) protagonist.

ML is also unusually likeable for a male lead, not overbearing and arrogant. He has his own weakness, and he has a shockingly good and sincere character for a romance lead in a rebirth novel. He's not perfect, in either the black-belly CEO or ideal prince manner. They're well suited to each other.

A small aspect of found family, which I always like.

An enjoyable exposition of mechas, it's equally or more as sci-fi as it is a romance novel.

I can't say it's groundbreaking, or even anything new, but it's good fun to read. <<less

Very very interesting plot. Contrary to many reborn in interstellar novels, the MC is not out for revenge. He just wanted to do what he loved instead of trying to compete with his brother. And he's very genuine character. And even if he knew some things about the future, he only relies on his strength, not necessarily using it to advance his career. And there main plot is about the theories about meca improvement and mental strength of the military. It's very refreshing. The public opinion on social medias is... more>> less present than other novels and honestly the main c characters only use it to help advertising products, not to save or destroy someone's reputation.

The charaecters features are not overly described, just enough to let you imagine as you like. No excessive feminine feature, weak hyperslim short shou, or bodybuilded ML etc.. No artificial means trying to seduce the reader into stereotypical characters

Overall it's a funny, straight to the point good, realistic-for a scifi -novel.

Just like disappointed of the end would have loved to have some bonu s chapters <<less
