In her previous life, she treated her mother-in-law like her own mother, treated her husband with respect and affection, devoted herself to her stepson and stepdaughter, and looking back at herself, Guan Suyi had a clear conscience. But in the end, she was ruined, exiled, and died alone. When she was about to die, Guan Suyi summed up her tragedy with one phrase: doing too much and saying too little.

After rebirth, she decided to say nothing, put on the hypocritical face of a good wife and mother, strive for the reputation of a gentle and virtuous character, bury all the enemies in the pit, and ask them to be grateful and remember her as their benefactor for the rest of their lives.

This is an interesting novel with a mature female lead, an interesting ML, and competent likeable supporting characters what's more, the translator did a great job translating, also researching various ancient customs and titles

Seriously, big kudos to translator 👏👏👏👏👏

So why not 4 stars?

  1. Most of the female antagonists are unidimensional, just same stock character with different names
  2. Unnecessary scenes added just for "face-slapping"
  3. No real plot

Personally, I think this a wonderful read.

It can be seen how hard it had been for women in ancient times. Here, our FL is a powerful character, with her own views, strengths, and determinations.

The ML on the other hand is wildly controversial, but I quite like him. By any means, he is not perfect at all, quite the opposite, but as we read we can understand where he is coming from and what had led him to be so.

The author portrays the building of a new monarchy, the struggle not... more>> only the common people but even someone as powerful as the emperor has to go through. Padentic thoughts, severe rules, and people always looking to blame the weaker party. One by one were vividly portrayed.

So as I finished reading, I was satisfied with the ending. Our FL deserved to be cherished like that, after all the despair and pain she has to face. <<less

Overall

Ehhh, the beginning with all the vibrant and passionate debates from the MC was very interesting. I really liked that. When we got to know the emperor in that 7 day debate with the MC unknowing was also nice. I felt curious and had good feelings for this character and I wanted to know more. At this point, he still felt like a big, powerful leader with mysterious hidden depths because we still don't know what goes on in his head or what hidden mechanisms are there. I really... more>> got the feels when the MC almost spoke his thoughts about how to rule the country and managed to almost bring all those slightly vague thoughts into the concrete realm. I could feel the shock, the heightened excitement and the jittery joy of just wanting to make connections with her mind lol. Then, we get further, the Mc’s husband's situation got a conclusion and all that stuff about the emperor, well, I just lost interest. For one, gosh, I hate all the emperor's actions with the romance after he was “freed from his shackles” ugh. Consent issue again. I thought this story wouldn't have it because this story has such an MC who is an amazingly independent and intelligent character, which yes, she is but that doesn't make the ML one who respects it *rolls eyes*. The TL says to stick through it but ugh. After the MC goes back to her family though, she kinda lost that strong capable air and relished becoming her family's beloved, pampered young daughter again. Which yes, the story explained well, but as a reader, I just want her to do badass things more lol so I dropped it haha. I have no more things to make me want to read more now since the husband situation has been tied and only the romance is left and well, don't like this emperor anymore lol.

I like the FL, she changed her personality as the situation and her enemies changed. The initial face slapping felt ruthless though it was never disgusting, just right for the situation she was in. She became more determined and proactive as the situation changed and her enemies became cruel.

At first, I actually stopped half way and couldnt get my self to read the rest because I didnt care for the ML, but I am glad I picked it up again because ML was a very decent person, I dont necessarily... more>> love him but he was good to the FL.

Overall good novel <<less

I really liked the FL right from the first chapter. Most especially her devil may care attitude. Most of the characters were actually morally grey which made them interesting even if you might not like them (not the villain’s though. I absolutely abhorred reading about them). However, I would like the novel more if she had gotten married to the emperor right of the bat as planned. Rather than marrying the ex husband and going through everything again (albeit with a different mindset). I still don’t get what the point... more>> of that plot line was. Every single chapter of her married life was just vexing my spirit and the ex was just a pathetic excuse of a man.

I haven’t gone far though but I just keep getting irritated. However, I might pick it up again. <<less

Phenomenal writing. Really good strong female lead who has her head in the right place. Three dimensional characters.

I usually give one star for novels I don’t finish. But when I got halfway, something about the pacing felt dragging which was unfortunate because I lost sleep over the first half. It was that good.

Really loved the novel. So happy that many tragedies were able to be reversed.

Also, genuinely hated some characters- really shown why us women and other marginalized groups are still where we are and that is additionally to the hatred and violence from men there are always some women that love to show how much they hate themselves and other women and want to destroy the life and future of others and even themselves, lifting themselves up in a f*cked up system instead of improving life for others and themselves. (The... more>> anti-abortion, etc movement worldwide has many female supporters/leaders.) Truly incomprehensible - how one can think their values/morals are more important than human life; but punching down is a sure way of success...

After all the two women in the Xu family could be so self-important about their limiting and mu*derous beliefs because they were lucky not to be married to terrible husbands.

End of rant 🐈‍⬛ <<less

I loved this. It was so freaking spectacularly awesome. I feel like if I dont use enough adjectives, you won't get how good this book is. It was the best chinese novel I'd read in a while. I can't stand those sappy novels with boring MCs. I loved our FL, she was freaking fantastic. The book was so so good. Wanna say a big thank you to our translator, it was a marvelous job.

It's a great novel, which I definitely enjoyed and liked a lot. The plot is not simple yet very interesting, it's about the foundation of a new dynasty era, it has detailed writing with reasonable motives. Especially about the ancient china's religious philosophies, in regard to confucius and legalism mostly. The characters, just wow, many of them have character development.

The FL was clearly my favorite, even in the later chapters, and the ML second, cheeky scoundrel.

I'll say I took this novel with a grain of salt. Since it has fantasy... more>> genre
Spoiler

for example: reincarnation, internal energy, human masks etc.

[collapse]

Everything besides this grain of salt, and some other things that can be or should be nitpicked by our moral standards, which the biggest nitpick I think the readers have:

Spoiler

is the ML pursuing FL, which I admit he did overstep some boundaries, but he did admit his mistakes and changed in the long period of time /Affair Tag/ It's the first novel I read completely, with this kind of tag, which my expectations for it were low at the start. But surprisingly, it was dealt in a straightforward way and in a good length of chapters, in their relationship as friends at first. Where ML pursues the FL which did not accept, who was in a solitary marriage, only after divorce (...). Let's not forget about FL's ex-husband who was drunk and the one who r**** the FL in the first chapters and the first world/story line FL was.

One more thing I want to say is that there are many things that I can't explain because there are many circumstances (ancient china era, ML emperor, etc.) that author led to it be, in a morally good and fictional way, their relationship to even exist. Which realistically in our time of modern era is a big no, no.

[collapse]

Overall, I do recommend reading this novel, just not the extra chapters, since shortly speaking, they don't relate to their second timeline at all.
Spoiler

In regard to the extra chapters they are a second timeline, which I'll say it straightforwardly, they're just bad content and annoying plus rushed. I don't know what the author was thinking, at least the ML and FL end up together, sigh...

[collapse]

P.S. There are bed scenes, but not detailed.

Goodnight. <<less

I really love this story! I like how the FL is strong and intelligent I'm not good in narrating nor explaining lol but please give it a try and don't just based your impression of the novel based on just these low star comments and judge it yourself. Btw, for me this is a fluff, light-hearted novel with no very major major misunderstanding.

I liked it but I'm also conflicted. I'd say the novel could be divided into three parts, each one belonging to a different genre. ... more>>
Spoiler

The first one, the MC delves into politics and academic discussions to ensure her scholarly grandfather and father wouldn't be ruined by an opponent who wanted to use them to get fame (Xu minister of previous life), she also makes a place for herself in the Zhao family and even though she's not happy with this bad marriage the imperial edict forced her into, she's able to live decently. Second part, the emperor starts an aggressive pursuit to court her and get her divorced, using some schemes and both gentle and forceful methods. She makes a literary name for herself openly attacking the Xu guy with well written essays. Third part, upset about women's restrictions she decides to act as she wishes instead of caring about the opinion of others and abandons her former principles as she comes to believe getting power is the only way to live well, then she enters the palace as empress and schemes to subdue all the harem.

[collapse]

So, the first part is a stiff, strict lady delving into morality and governance who believes her family's reputation is the most important thing. The second is about dignity and demanding respect in a relationship but now she seems to use her principles and literary talent as a way to subdue the enemy, now she's guided by the idea of having a clear conscious. In the last part, she throws all the principles aside and does anything she can to live well, she values power for self protection.

Now you get it? The genre is undecided as a whole because we have a philosophical, revenge and romance book mixed up here. That leads to contradictions at some points. The MC does admit she's duplicitous and all, but I felt like I was reading about three different women, instead of one woman going through character development.

I liked the romance. The ML was pushy and overbearing at some points but I liked the way MC wasn't afraid to defy him. He was forced to change and respect her because she let him know she woudn't be bullied into marrying him. He learns, don't worry. And even if I was uncomfortable with ML's behaviour sometimes I also admit the MC gave him mixed signals, which she also confesses later. For a guy raised by wolves, he's not bad at all.

I'm just disappointed with the lack of coherency through the book. It gave a lot of importance to principles and morality but it ended up going the common route. I don't blame the MC for being selfish and rebellious at the end, I just think the author hyped up her rightousness and scholarly talent a lot and then it became a farce, just a tool to control others. With her initial character I thought she's enjoy being a teacher or counselor and was interested in her journey to achieve that. I felt like she lost her purpose and determination as the story advanced. At the end, she was just a typical dominant MC "who can't be offended or else...".

I wish I hadn't read the extras, it was an utilitarian romance which made more sense in the harem context but she truly lost all her dignity in this one. I'll leave an excerpt that says it all.

Spoiler

In the final analysis, most of people's relationships tend to be about interests, to get and to give, gains and losses. Unwilling to pay but wanting to earn profit, how could there be such a good thing in the world?

So she gave herself willingly and got a satisfactory result.

[collapse]

I prefer gentle, mutually respectful relationships without power disbalance so I should have stuck with the main plot ending. My respects to the translator who did a great job and took such challenging story. <<less

Too convoluted and tedious. With the kind of status she was bestowed and the golden finger of past memories, her revenge shouldn't be so long winded. The title is who cares in the end I think she cared too much. Bah.

But the translation was superb. A job well done.

Just went in and I am feeling quite sick of the live story.

MC rebirthed but still got married to the scum husband due to ML. The scum husband family is so sickening I can't bear to read more.

I actually really enjoyed the philosophies and the fact that the FL was an unabashed 'standing bookcase'. Even in exile in her first life, she was still a scholar to the bones. I like that the author didn't try to soften this to make it more in line with the classic tropes. I like that the ML (I hope) is such a shameless guy because otherwise I don't think he could get through her maze of proprieties. I learned a lot about the philosophies discussed and their implications from this... more>> story and the insight of seeing it through the lens of the legal systems impact on women. I also like that the original in-law family were realistic and selfish in their awakening to the FL's true value and am looking forward to seeing how the author handles balancing the FL and ML's relationship with the FL's desire to respond to the sincerity the Zhao family seem to be showing. Also, how the ML and FL handle the issue of the harem. <<less

Some of the best intrigue. Genuinely smart main character. Solid. Very captivating. I can't stop reading this, I really wish I would have waited for it to be completely translated. The translation quality is pretty awesome especially for something with the amount of references or metaphors or whatever that this contains. I recommend giving it a shot.

Honestly for a bit I preferred she not end up with ML. I think the connections she made with her family are pretty important and idk how I feel if we lose them... more>> from story. Those worries were mostly resolved. Had about four chapters where I honestly felt ML touched boundaries of being scummy. Like ignoring boundaries. Thankfully not too excessive but made me cringe a bit

Spoiler

She brings momo with her.

Still feel a tad bad for mother in law.

[collapse]

Do they split / when?

Spoiler

Yes, at chapter 111.

Ends well. I enjoyed extras, the pacing on those was excellent. <<less

I mtl’ed the last chapter just for the sake of knowing who the male lead and I am satisfied. Hopefully translator will continue this work until the end. It’s so so good but too deep for simpleton like me. Loool.. Sometimes I need to re-read the sentenses or just skip some altogether but still the whole story intriguing me so hard. Totally recommending this.

I am a huge fan of Casanovanic Bookworm. Have read all author's works so far, really appreciate every each of them.

This novel has a unique style with a strong and self reliant characters. Though, maybe the MC is too capable for my taste. She is perfect in every way possible, with a smooth road of faceslapping everyone around her. Too ideal, I guess.

This novel is full, I mean F. U. L. L. On Sofictstry, but I skipped most of them, they don't actually influence the main plot.

So far, the story is good. It was heavy with all the philosophies mentioned but the translator did a good job in explaining most of it to be understandable by me (considering that I hate philosophy lol). I also love how sharp MC's tongue is like how she was able to make those people became embarrassed and quietened down

This is a must read! Don't walk, run to This Seat Is Bored and be prepared to pull and all-nighter. The FL has a compelling quiet conviction about her that is very attractive. Her character does go through some changes but that's expected when she is free and able to find herself. I didn't mind the ML, if anything I quite like him but he is a very polarising character. I'm on old school Mills & Boon reader and I appreciate that this is fiction so I don't take anything... more>> to heart. The comments section is WILD though. I skimmed through it and mostly stayed away. There was a lot hate strong opinions about the ML and FL but funnily enough those same posters continuesld reading (and commenting) right to the end (as far I could see from my skimming). There's even an alternate ending that explores how the characters would have developed if the og timeline continued but the FL didn't die. Very very interstating. I loved it, it felt darker, more grittier, less romantic and more real. Read this. 9.5/10! <<less

OMG I really found a gem 🤯🤩 after a long search. I can’t describe how addicted I am for Chinese novels specially historical ones. My favorite ones are ‘chaos of beauty’, rebirth of malicious empress of military lineage, to be a virtuous wife. Finally after reading so many mediocre reads I finally found a gem 🥹. I can’t wait to finish this book.
