In her previous life, she treated her mother-in-law like her own mother, treated her husband with respect and affection, devoted herself to her stepson and stepdaughter, and looking back at herself, Guan Suyi had a clear conscience. But in the end, she was ruined, exiled, and died alone. When she was about to die, Guan Suyi summed up her tragedy with one phrase: doing too much and saying too little.

After rebirth, she decided to say nothing, put on the hypocritical face of a good wife and mother, strive for the reputation of a gentle and virtuous character, bury all the enemies in the pit, and ask them to be grateful and remember her as their benefactor for the rest of their lives.

Put off reading this for a while due to some of the comments complaining about the FL’s monologues, which in retrospect I find to be an absolutely amazing critique given that the setting of the story is literally how philosophy shapes law and culture and directly impacts people’s lives. The “monologues” aren’t even that long! I mean I did skim most of them because as it turns out I know nothing about Confucianism or Legalism and the translator probably wasn’t able to completely capture what was being said... but FL... more>> is basically the local tyrant of rhetoric and I love her for it. Absolutely destroying everyone with her mouth only? Totally savage. Love her for it.

Also she really gives the ML a run for his money, though readers who don’t appreciate domineering MLs still might not appreciate him. I found their romance to be genuinely sincere and touching, and overall thoroughly enjoyed the story. <<less

I quite like it, and the translator does such a good job translating it, especially despite how complicated the book is. I like the fl; she is incredibly smart and knows when she should or shouldn't take action, and every single revenge is very satisfying. Though it is not perfect as there are many things I wish were different, but the ML is def not one of them. I started the book thinking he was going to be the worst because of the comment, but he's not that bad--at least... more>> not as bad as the comments make him seem to be, I quite like him. I do think there are some things that some people will not like but keep in mind that this book is a historical fiction set in ancient china, there will be some things that are not agreeable to the modern mindset but you should know what you're getting into when you decide to read historical fiction anyway. <<less

This was a very different sort of rebirth story! The male lead wasn't my usual type, more of a himbo, but it works. I loved all the intellectual conversations between him and the FL even if I had a hard time understanding some of the legalist/Confucianist concepts. Also thank god her OG husband never has a chance. The dude was beyond a wet blanket. He gave me the twitches. XD

I do feel like this could've been shorter. The main story ends around chapter 175 and then we get a cool... more>> novella-length re-do where the wet blanket husband is reborn instead. I liked seeing that no matter what lifetime or rebirth the FL and the ML will always find their way to each other. <<less

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A SIGN TO READ THIS NOVEL. Here it is!
Read this! Im very picky when it comes to choosing good novels, I read alot of books and this is good. I can say Ive read better but this is also a nice read.

DO NOT LISTEN TO THOSE WHO RATED LOW. I dont even know if we read the same novel. But 1 star really? Man. Some people don’t appreciate hard work.

And I really don’t get it why some people hated the FL. Lol. I like intelligent FL, I like reading long banter. Some may be put off but I appreciate ancient novels cause I like reading their cultures and knowledge back then.

I also like the ML. And Im really glad she got rid of her ex husband. Anyways, please rest assured that its 4.4 ratings is well deserved. Ignore those bunch of low ratings.

This is a case of when a truly good writer uses his pen to bring life to a story. If you don't understand other cultures and don't have wide perspective of how life could be in different places and different ages and different stages, then this one is not for you. I was a little disappointed that I could not directly read the raw scripts, because I cannot read mandarin. There was a lot of beautiful words and meanings lost in the translation, which I can understand because some of... more>> these ideologies, meanings and phrases would be lost over time in history, and like the peasants in the story we need a simpler way of saying things to understand.

Disclaimer: The title and synopsis is not about how she chooses to live her life as a character, but about how she gives up on the aspirations and people from her past life to take a new path in this one. So if you are looking for a character which truly decides to adopt a passive way of life after betrayal this is not it.

I admit I have limited knowledge about Chinese ideologies like Confucianism, Legalism etc. I just knew that it was what guided life for people in their culture back then and still is pretty influential in today's society. It was really interesting to read how people discussed different types of ideologies and ethics and debated different theories and outcomes to see what was the right of way living, just like we do today. I am not big on philosophy or ethical debates, but it really set the mood of this story. It was not just a story of characters fighting in the back courtyard, fighting for power and killing each other. It really dived deep into how people really lived their lives. It is not hard to tell who is the evil and who is the good in this book, who was greedy and who was generous, but their struggles and debates to prove who is right, just complicates the lives of those in the past and brings them beyond a point of merely foolish scheming characters.

Guan Suyi putting ideas so eloquently into easily understandable words and teaching people generously really attracted me to her character. It is easy to make someone into a person like her boring, and some people, based on the comment, really do find her boring. But I have to blame that on their lack of knowledge of the topics discussed or finding the wrong piece of literature to feed their craving for revenge romance. The story really puts into perspective of her character, how she was raised and how she was taught, to let us better understand what kind of person she was and the choices she makes. And it is the same it when comes Hunnar (I prefer this name, it sounds more affectionate). Through the first half of the story, not only did I slowly grow to love the characters for who they are, I also grew to love the way they lived, full of ambition, striving to set things right.

They are not perfect, they all have their flaws, Hunnar is in fact an immoral being, going after someone else's wife, and Guan Suyi goes of the tangent and leads him on. But the writer truly made me love each and every one of their characters despite all their shortcomings, even their shortcomings, making them come to life. They each have their reasons for being how they are and it is not necessary for you to like them, but to call them despicable is still a stretch too far. Both Guan Suyi and Hunnar go through a lot of character development, even Zhao Lulu the toxic ex does. No one really fits into one character image, there is always traits that make us seem different and exceptions that make us act out of character, so while it may seem hypocritical, their emotions and are rather realistic when it contrast with the character they try to wear in front of others. Both in terms of writing and character development, this book is a ten.

Now for the downsides,

The plot is not excellent. There is no one particularly strong draw factor to this plot, or the gist of the story. I managed to stay hooked mostly because I had read the reviews before and I wanted to find how she ends up with Hunnar. The part on her literary conversations and debates and development of the country kind of stagnates a little, especially after she and Hunnar acknowledge each other as potential partners. I would have loved to see more of how policies and stuff were implemented, how Hunnar developed as an emperor even more. While we did see a bit of Hunnar learning, we only mainly see him taking Guan Suyi's teaching in completely and applying it the same way. There is no thought provoking moment, or times where he willingly learns from others.

Another thing I would like to point out is that the side characters are just side characters. There is no real 3D view of their lives, but I believe this could be the writing style the author adopted. To solely tell the story through the lives of our main couple.

I am not quite sure if neo-confucianism was exactly how it is presented here (I have limited knowledge), but it is true in the regard that it did affects the rights of women and their freedom in life to quite a large extent. It was a principle that rose to power in Northern Song Dynasty, and was continued to be followed strictly in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Yet it could be fair to say that it was a thing of the rich, and the peasants couldn't bother more about it while they were starving away.

I won't be reviewing the extras.

I definitely recommend anyone interested in this genre to try it out. Don't complain if you don't like the genre and this is not your cup of tea. It is still a great piece of literature. <<less

One of the best rebirth novels out there! I love Suyi and Hunnar even with all his shortcomings, he is by far one of the most realistic ML I have ever read. He is not omnipotent, he has his own fears and had made mistakes but he always tried to learn and better his mistakes. One of the best representations of a male lead in those times. The translations are absolutely fantastic. I can see how hard it would have been and how much effort would have gone into translating... more>> anecdotes of confucianism and legalism to make it easy for readers to understand and keep up with the story. So hats off to you! 👍🏻 <<less

Very well-written story and the translator did an amazing job. I really liked the FL in this story, she really took every situation in stride. She's an intelligent character who didn't take any bull crap from anyone and that includes the ML. We meet the FL during her 1st lifetime and we get a pretty clear picture of the life she had been living. We get to see her awakening to a new life where she is able to make different decisions. If you've read the summary and the tags... more>> then you have a clear idea of what kind of story you'll be reading, if you like these types of stories then you will enjoy this one as well. I didn't care for the ML too much because
Spoiler

he seemed controlling and easily swayed. He married off the FL without asking her or her family just because a guy he wasn't even close to anymore asked him. Then after meeting her changed his mind and decided that he wanted to marry her. And then he involved himself in her marriage making life unnecessarily difficult for her. As if he was saying wouldn't prefer to be with me than with your husband? Her husband was terrible and the only reason she had to endure him and his family is because the ML MARRIED HER OFF TO HIM.

[collapse]

I found the FL husband's daughter to be a very interesting character and I was glad they didn't make her a 1 dimension character. I wish we could have seen more of her and I wouldn't be mad if she got her own story. All in all, I would recommend this. Great read. <<less

It's a good, slightly different take on ancient China with a philosophical slant. The FL is quite an overpowered protagonist, which is due in part to her being reborn. Not only is she an academic, her travels and immersion in different environments have helped her obtain a few more special skills handy during times of need. There are tons of theory in practice scenarios her, which may feel incredible at time.

There is little to no slow down in the pacing of this story, it starts off in a brisk pace... more>> and continues throughout in more or less the same speed. I like how it doesn't dwell too much on her previous life and just gives enough glimpses throughout the story. It is heavy on Confucianism and discourse on various theories on governance, a lot of things went over my head but I was still able to grasp enough to understand what the opposing forces are trying to fight for. It didn't feel too long, just good enough for a few days' reading.

I haven't checked the raws for this one, so I'm not sure if it's the translation of the actual story that had a few plot gaps (
Spoiler

Ruan-shi introduction, Jinzi's identity reveal, Emperor's back story reveal

. They didn't have any major impacts, just "huh?" moments that didn't seem to transition seamlessly.

I loved FL, how much she stopped caring in her rebirth but still managed to turn things to her favor or let them see her reasoning. She's had a revelation and significant character development later in the story that turns her from passive defensive to savagely offensive. Apart from weird episodes that felt out of character, she is a solid character. On the other hand, it took me a while to warm up to ML, and I think a lot of readers would rightfully agree on this.
Spoiler

For a scheming, manipulative foreigner to take the helm of another country, having a capable army at his beck and call, it felt a little unbelievable for me how he easily and deeply he trusted and fell for other people's scheming. Yes, regardless of the sad backstory, he deserved all the groveling and effort he had to do.

[collapse]

The other characters are also good, some had their redemption arcs, some deservedly did not. I just kinda felt bad for
Spoiler

his ex-husband, especially on his own rebirth in the extra chapters

, but his ending thoughts perfectly summarized the only relationship he can have with FL.

Warning as well for animal lovers, there are moments of animal cruelty in this novel, one even done by one of the main characters. <<less

I really enjoyed this novel 💖💖💖.... Especially the Alternative part....

I don't know why there are so many negative comments on the ML. He was only a warrior before he became an Emperor. Half of his life he was on the field, so he is wary of all the emotions.... Yes his way of pursuing the FL was wrong, but he never crossed any line with her.... But after staying with her, he started to know where he was wrong and acknowledged it, but in his way 😅🤪😜.... In that era,... more>> even if you are an Emperor, it is a taboo to chase a married women, but he never new all those rules....

3.5 not rounded up bc this would have been 5 stars if there was no romance at all for me. Ok, the MC loves the flawed "shameless" ml. Who cares? I DONT CARE. I don't care about this romance at all. This was top tier badass chick MC novel until I had to accept this f*cking ml.

I dropped bc I was totally feeling nothing for this ml. I feel nothing about this romance. This is not for me. This type of shameless is about ignoring someone's wishes bc you "know"... more>> what they want so you do want u want. I don't like characters like that. This reeks of the ickiness you would feel when you see someone who ended up with their boss, and you're not sure if it was a workplace power issue that got them together. The MC even says it: "you've been manipulating my life." And it's true. This book is just about her (being f*cking smart & protecting her family &) dealing with the ml's controlling actions to her life.

Everything he does.
Spoiler

he wants to give her a marriage she already rejected? Check ok. Trapped her there. He wants to make sure the backhouse isn't peaceful so she doesn't get with her husband? Check send in the abandoned concubine to her door to deal with. He wants her to deal with the immorality and the difficulty of her current married position of hearing he likes her? Check just confess anyways and who cares if she rejected me bc I know she's got feelings for me. He wants to kiss, hug, and harrass her while she's married bc he knows shes not adverse to him even though she still is rejecting him? Check hey her hand here's my c*otch btw kisses. Who cares about what everyone will say about her if she gets with him? He obviously doesn't bc he loves her too much to give a f*ck. When she's mad and still rejecting him? Check. he's like damn she's cute. "Shameless" ML is equivalent to imo disrespectful to the MC. She's not just cute when she's mad homie. She's f*cking mad can you respect that??? No and the MC low-key doesn't care so WHY SHOULD I CARE. I DONTT CARE ANYMORE BC I DNFED. Fck this. But honestly the author is aware of what they are doing so that's good. But it just makes me question why they like this type of ml. Le sigh. I guess people dig the shameless guy stereotype. Not me tho.

[collapse]

I personally don't recommend the romance but the MC's brains are so big.... If you like ancient philosophy and politics, you should try this. Le sigh. <<less

one of the best translated stories i've read here. A lot of drama and I love how strong the main character was. It was a second chance and she reflected about herself and her past life as a sort of learning experience. She wasn't overbearing or didn't dwell too much on past mistakes. She amended what she could and let go of things that she couldn't.

to be honest, when I read a certain part I had to look at finale to see who she ended up with because I hated... more>> for her to go back to square one and be trapped there. It was just a few chapters in but it hooked me to the point that I felt invested in how her life and relationship would be at the end. I enjoyed the process of seeing it all unravel afterwards. Although the ML is a bit of a dummy, he is a lovable dummy.

the long extra felt like another way of how this story could have been told. It was amazing to read. The author is a genius, to be honest, to think of such twists and turns. Reading this story felt like reading three different stories that came together as a whole and meld perfectly. I will probably read this again just to get that high again.",) <<less

I'd say it's a 3. Ch90 rlly killed the vibe ngl, like s*xual harassment is smth rlly chills the ML for me.

As this is a regression of a fairly traditional woman, it does very well in showing how willing she is to stay married until the very last moment, and doesn't rlly consider actively seeking revenge. But then we arrive at the point of contradiction in the chara development. She overlooks the ML soo much, his behavior that is, and moments that really require her to rage or despair or... more>> disdain, just have her being very pro ML and settling into her given role without much feeling or thought about the driving force behind her situation.

Then we have the motherhood is godhood is willing sacrifice ideology, even tho one character is shown as clearly the opposite, it sends a pretty clear mssg overall, of good women being more than willing to sacrifice themselves and their lives for even the concept of a child, and those who don't, well, clearly worse villains than a rapist.

Also sorta makes you go hmm, when the merchants are shown as dumb and s*upid and without foresight, but their family has been having a good time for a few generations, so like, what exectly am I right.

There were more things I wanted to mention but they sorta slipped my mind cause it took me like 2 weeks to come back and write a review. <<less

This story is written so well. I can tell that the author has really done his homeworks. I learned a lot about the culture developments before, during, and after warring states period. The author uses a lot of idioms, also enriching my knowledges. It's not that I don't respect and proud of my own nation and cultures, but I feel different taste in learning cultures from other countries, especially Chinese culture. It's so fascinating, in my opinion.

Human development is extraordinary. Human thinking grows. Very rare, from just a webnovel, there... more>> are many lessons to be learned.

I highly recommend this novel. At least just by reading and contemplating the interactions between the characters in this story, there are moral values to be learned here.

Be as wise as snakes, but harmless as doves. Learn how to avoid making mistakes and to protect ourselves, but at the same time able to maintain empathy.

Confucianism said : repaying grievance with virtue, then why repay virtue? It can't be more right!

Compassion is the truth, but that doesn't mean we should allow ourselves to be crushed by the evil that exists inside human heart. Human relations and enforcement of laws, all both go hand in hand in the end. <<less

in the theory she cheating with the Emperor (ML) behind her husband, but who cares? Her husband was tr*sh, maybe not completely tr*sh but... while the relationship concept was similar to the novel I forgot the title in nuts, the husband was not dead and she transmigrate into the story, take care of the children and got to meet someone new... Her brother-in-law likes her, and the children help other people to match with her and not their father (idk but I feel the story was tr*sh) but the hell did this concept used here I got hooked up I need to applause the author for this, and ofc our translator, what amazing job

Some people dislike ML but I think he is the most suitable person for MC. He is also pitiful. He struggles his whole life and finally found his saviour (MC) but found out she was married to other by his own hands. Ofcouse he wants to fight for her. Although some methods was not agreeable with 21st century thinking, as an emperor, he was good enough. Some people said emperor shouldn't give marriage decree for a girl as he like, but I want to say it is not uncommon. At... more>> first they were just strangers and ML'friend requested marriage decree ofcouse he agreed. It's not his false He is the emperor he can do it. That is also saved MC from unknown dangers. Because she is rebirh, she know her ex-husband household as the back of her hand. She know their nature fron the start and can plan everything herself calmly. Imaging she marries other and she will face the problems like her past life. What's the point of rebirth then? Everything depends on destiny. She and ML are fated.

I love this novel very much although I don't want to read extras. Because extras are another life time and I don't have the heart to be tortured. I love MC rebirth story but not the villain rebirth story. MC is suffering left and right. What's the point of reading? <<less

Such a good novel! Aaah, I'm in ecstasy!

For the first time I found Chinese characters with more than one layer of personality, who can make mistakes, learn and improve! The protagonist is really a strong character where her looks are just a bonus and it's her wisdom that inspires respect! And at the moment no male characters showed that troop of being extremely dominant, arrogant and therefore perfect.

The story is very well written and the translation is wonderful! Kudos to the translator who did the translation with such care that... more>> they even research to explain the political part of the novel!

I highly recommend! <<less
