With the rising tide of steam power and machinery, who can come close to being a Beyonder? Shrouded in the fog of history and darkness, who or what is the lurking evil that murmurs into our ears?

Waking up to be faced with a string of mysteries, Zhou Mingrui finds himself reincarnated as Klein Moretti in an alternate Victorian-era world where he sees a world filled with machinery, cannons, dreadnoughts, airships, different machines, as well as Potions, Divination, Hexes, Tarot Cards, Sealed Artifacts…

The Light continues to shine but mystery has never gone far. Follow Klein as he finds himself entangled with the Churches of the world—both orthodox and unorthodox—while he slowly develops newfound powers thanks to the Beyonder potions.

Like the corresponding tarot card, The Fool, which is numbered 0—a number of unlimited potential—this is the legend of “The Fool”.

About 90% of the stuff that happens early on has a payoff, even if it's like 800 chapters later. Even the mentions of political reforms and bread prices and squalid pseudovictorian everyday life. While most of the major factions and players aren't known at the beginning of the story, generally everything that happens is the result of characters with well-defined motives trying to reach their goals, so you can look back later and say 'oh, so that's why the king did this or that'.

The author doesn't always go back and... more>> explicitly spell stuff out whenever Klein finds out something new, which is good.

There are some issues with the translation being verbose and using poor word choices. Going with literal character-for-character translations occasionally results in things like 'the scent of the steak made his oral cavity fill with saliva' instead of 'the steak smelled mouthwatering'.

Also, lol@ the guy in the other review saying that the story is unrealistic because there was no such thing as 'affordable housing projects' in Victorian England. There were actually a TON of them! That was, in fact, the primary way housing was built for workers by he 1860s. The standard organizational structure was to to charge well below market rent, aiming for a total of 5% profit. That way they'd maintain the buildings and eventually be able to build more housing; this became known as '5 percent philanthropy'. <<less

My favorite wn I’ve ever read. The story is good, but the world is what makes it for me. It’s refreshing to read after all the copy paste cultivation novels. It feels like the author actually put effort in writing the novel. Can’t wait for lotm pt 2.

This novel to this day is one of the best fictional stories I read and am glad it was one of the first works I read when I was new to web novels.

The vast world this novel built, the steam punk setting, the cast of characters, the mystery of the occult and especially the power system are so captivating.

This is a work written with passion, dedication and brilliant story telling and to this day is one of my top recommendations.

One last thing I would say is that the manhua was... more>> a mistake and I won't hear it from no one :' ( <<less

Gothic steampunk visuals with some solid thinking into unique power system, a good simple read.

The pros:

it is book worthy, I mean with some reworks and edits it really would become a reputed fiction series.

... more>> It's got the mystery right, the logic, and some generic versions of comedy perfectly right.

Till later volumes it hardly feels stale, there's some unpredictability here and there that keeps the charm going.

Now the cons:

It fails to create any form of attachments to characters, any emotional scenes just feels off.

There are some crucial scenarios were the plot develops erratically, changes occur with long winded reasons which seem plausible but just not right.

Mc's daily actions are 10% plan 90% "coincidences", he encounters adventures on a daily basis which should alert him as he is already wary of similar situation but no, even when he sees his abnormal speeds of development compared to others neither does he or anyone else feel it is odd.

That brings me to this, MC's leveling feels like determined spots, it doesnt feel real at all, his methods aren't different from other geniuses but somehow he outpaces them. Without spoiling too much all I can say is he goes from 0 to divinity within a year or year and half, in a world where people take decades to reach the same.

There's no isolated incidents, each and every mystical activity MC gets involved has an over arching connection to the main world mystery top level god stuff...

This is the reasoning for his advantage over others, he experiences a what a demigod goes through in a century in just a week...

And this inadvertently leads to over stressing on how special MC is, his hardships feel mundane, where I am at now I don't feel much drive to read the next chapter at all...

There are plenty more minute flaws, technical and factual but I won't judge on those, cause this really is a good novel among the bunch of fast food varieties.

Basically for anyone looking for a good hero MC with western style world with grounded magic system and like Chinese conservative jokes and perspective then yeah this a bang for buck story. <<less

One of the best (action) mystery novel I've read so far. I love how the MC build his character as well as the others with their beyonder sequence. Even though the starts pace so slow, I still immersed reading it from the beginning to end. I am looking forward for the apocalypse sequel and more actions.

I would personally rate this as one of my most loved CN novels, most often CN novels suffer from having to push out daily chapters and just write as many words as possible to make money but this one is for the most party well written, thought out and different from many other novels I've read.

The story focuses on a pretty much everyday chinese guy who get's transported into a man who has just killed himself and into a what at first seems like a European country that has just... more>> entered the industrial age. Slowly however it is revealed that this world also has a hidden side that is based on a lovecraftian setting / Cthulhu mystery.

Then after entering this hidden world the MC starts out weak and for the first few hundred chapters or so it stay's that way with him overcomming difficulties by mostly brain and sometimes luck but almost never brawn.

I think the story is well written the world building well thought out for the most part and the pace though slow sucks you in. If you want a well written and engaging story this is for you but if you want a fast paced action story with a harem or romance then this is not for you. 5/5 easy. <<less

One of the best CN novels I have read. It has good world building, very good characters but I would like to emphasis that it also is cruel towards the end of every volume. The start is a bit boring you may not know why you are being told about some things but that doesnt affect the actual story the info are used in first 2 volumes so no problem there. It has some ridiculous antagonists and I love them. Overall its was a very good read for me. I... more>> have read some parts of it many times especially the

One of the most consistent stories I read. The idea of not knowing everything from the beginning and having "mysteries" to explore is refreshing. The world building is done well and the characters are likeable.

The cons of the novel are the slower pace. I agree with other review writers that at times too much unrelated, unnecessary and detailed information is given, that does not improve the reading experience by much, if at all, and instead creates this slower pace / slow advancement of the story. The additional information can deepen... more>> the understanding of the settings of the novel, but more often it just has no value for the reader (look at other reviews for adequate examples).

In conclusion a great novel that is just to long for its own good. <<less

What is a masterpiece? THIS is a masterpiece.

Easily within the top 0.01% on this website. The story is extremely good and gets better and better as it progresses.

The story is so amazing and the plot so complex and deep that it will take multiple novels (at least 3 including this one) to cover all of it.

Also, it has some of the most memorable characters in all work of fictions I know, the author went above and beyond to give life to his characters.

"A guardian, a miserable wretch that is constantly fighting against threats and madness."

F##king Lit. A god-fooldamn masterpiece. This is the first novel series on novelupdates (out of near 100 novel series here + over 1000 novel/series read in total) that I rate 5/5. This series is a masterpiece unlike any other of its kind! It's regretful knowing that I'll never get to read something else like it again, but hey, I heard this is a trilogy series and the second part is coming out in Mid 2022, gonna be a... more>> while, but definitely worth the wait.

It took me some time after first finding out about this series before reading it. When I first saw the cover art, I thought this was the work of one of the many amateur Chinese novelists in fantasy fiction, and boy was I wrong. It's the complete opposite, this here just screams that it was carefully crafted by someone who knew what he was doing. You will never regret picking this up. No, you'll thank me and yourself for believing in me when I recommend Lord of the Mysteries to you. Go directly into the novel instead of manga first, manga (on hiatus since March 2021) is good as well, but clearly inferior to the novel (spoken from the perspective of someone who read till 64/64 of the manga before reading the novel). <<less

Absolutely a must read for all of those who like this things: mystery, action, clever writing, extremely well done world building, a definite power system.

I cannot stop contemplating about how well done this novel is! The first 30 chapter are quite slow, but don't let that stop you from reading and don't take in consideration the reviews of those who read up to volume 1.

The only thing that I would complain about, but also not is that the ending is quite open with a lot of the mysteries unresolved. But... more>> this can be explained by the fact that is a trylogy and book 2 will come soon in 2022. So I will gladly wait. <<less

Many people seem to confuse this novel as a mystery but this is actually an adventure novel.

My review is heavily biased by my preference so take it witha grain of salt.

The pros:

... more>> 1. The storytelling is very well done and there aren't many fillers as many details from the earlier volumes do have it's uses in the later volumes. The story is very solid with little to no plot holes currently.

2. The world building is amazing as the author managed to seamlessly tie the steampunk vibe with fantasy elements quite well. It doesn't feel forced.

3. Some of the emotional moments are so beautiful. (Won't spoil which)

The cons:

1. Characters: Some characters make me feel like dropping the novel

the MC, Klein sometimes feels quite dull and like a hypocrite to me. We never really know what he actually is like cause he spends so much time acting as different personalities. (I know that during his faceless arc he defined what made him himself but that doesn't make me feel anything. Maybe that's just me) One time I was really excited cause he had a split Klein Moretti appear in his psyche but it got removed before anything happens (I was thinking that there would be some kind of interesting battle of the personality but was disappointed). I am interested in how he ends up but Klein feels like a cardboard box sometimes.

Audrey Hall is another character I find hard to tolerate. She is basically a Mary Sue. While her social standing and position could lead to very interesting arc it hasn't been used and that's a shame. What makes me the most mad is that she doesn't have to work hard at all unlike the other characters as she can get whatever she wants on a silver platter. She joins the Tarot club at the beginning and has literally no problem at all to advance in sequence as she gets all materials and advice from the club. She has grown a bit from her naive self but I still don't like her. Her Beyonder pathway is one of the most interesting and powerful but she doesn't use them much other than guiding people in the nobility (I know that's kinda important but give me more variety). She doesn't really have much presence other than being the rich young lady who has a lot of money to spare for her hobbies. (Her desire to grow strong is also flimsy). She's a kid who's been given too much power.

2. Little to no charcter development : Since this story is more plot driven than character driven, we hardly see any character development other than few instances.

The most characterization is seen in the MC and even Klein feels like a cardboard sometimes. Others also have a few moments of development. Honestly it's a shame that the story is not more character focused cause it has a cast of diverse characters.

I have to say that character development was done best with Old Neil and Dunn Smith. Klein also has some great moments like when he finally defines the rules of the Faceless and who he really is. (I don't want to hate on Klein cause I do like him and his determination to return to earth)

Currently I'm just reading it cause I wonder how Klein will end up.

3. The grey fog and luck enhancement ritual. The thing that I still have a bit of dissatisfaction about is the way the luck enhancement ritual worked. Nothing major just my bias.

4. The law about losing control. While I like the rule generally, I think this rule hinders a lot of character development cause acting differently from one's principles may make you go insane. That makes it difficult for characters to change.

5. Klein's dependence on Mr Azik's whistle. Too much dependence on an item is bad. This better harm him later (I'm at ch 900 right now so idk if he will suffer from his dependence later)

I do enjoy this story but I think speed reading it the best way to go. Maybe I will appreciate it more later. Definitely one of the best Chinese novels I've read. I recommend it highly.

4.5/5 in it's best and 3.8/5 in it's worst so average 4 stars

Edit on 7/7/21: Holy hell the end of volume 4 left me wrecked with feels.
Spoiler

Daly's death was so beautifully written and Klein's feelings felt so good to me. That scene re ignited my love for this novel

[collapse]

Just wow. That scene was so poignant.

Edit on July 10 2021:

I just completed the novel and well it's quite fun. I definitely recommend everyone to give it a read. <<less

One of the BEST Chinese WN I have read and believe me I scour through a lot of shitty novel through my bored time commuting. A few complain about the slow development but I didn't really feel it when reading, and I have reread this novel twice now. The author is quite good in spoon feeding information and is able to keep track of plotline and side character quite well. Rereading through the novel, you can actually tell that the author doesn't make stuff up as he go. The power... more>> system can be describe as hard magic but the way the author used it is nothing but genius.

A lot of novel with the "isekai" theme never really bother with the original setting may be until near the end of the novel with a passing line "in the bazillion world that exist, MC see his world some where in the insignificant corner" but this ain't it. This plotline won't blow your mind but it is already way better than the usual you seen in 99% of generic cultivation novel.

This author also written a cultivation novel if that is what you fancy which is called "Throne of Magical Aracania". Despite being an earlier work, Throne is way better than most of the generic cultivation novel on the web and one of the few that I actually bother reading to the end. <<less

Sorry for my bad English

A masterpiece. The world-building is exceptional, you can clearly imagine the world he lived in. The pace is very slow at the start, but still fun to read. For those who find it boring at the start, just read volume 1 and then you can consider whether this novel is for you.

Cuttlefish That Loves Diving is the author of Throne of Magical Arcana, one of my favorite Chinese novel, and certainly the best with a wizard as a main character in my opinion. So, is Lord of the Mysteries a confirmation of this writer's talent or a letdown after one excellent novel ?

The answer is, thankfully, the former. This tale is simply awesome, a story of intrigue, mysteries, investigation, occult and horror that will keep you on edge until the end. True, it starts slow, with a third to a half... more>> of the first volume being an introduction to the setting (still fresh), but after that, you just won't be able to let go until the finish line, and maybe even beyond, for CTLD stated that it is only the first part of a trilogy. Just one warning, unlike TMA, there's no romance, which in this case, is not a bad thing since I can see how the author could have managed a love story with the main character without making it feel artificial.

The protagonist, Klein Moretti, is an excellent character, who progresses in his adventures with wits, intelligence and prudence. His victories are almost never the result of his guts (although they play a part in some of them), but careful planning, deductions and wisdom. He knows he can't face everything the world throws at him and pulls back if needed. He also assumes a number of different identities as the story progresses, as really plays them each as a different person.

The others characters are equally well written, from his associates in his own little conspiracy, to the antagonists (there is not only one major antagonist), to the world's important figures, the secondary or even tertiary characters, each and everyone of them is unique, with its merits, flaws, quirks, likes/dislikes, disposition and often secrets. That's why I can only stop here so I don't spoil the story.

For the same reason, I won't go into much details about the setting. The protagonist is transmigrated into a Victorian/Industrial Revolution world with rivalries between nations, piracies and colonisation, but which hides an underworld of occult conspiracies, mysteries and power games between occult entities (human and non-human) of tremendous, a world where knowing thing above your power level can literally drive one mad or into a monster.

The power system, by the way is very original. The Beyonders obtain their power by drinking potions made of occult ingredients, each potion having a name (Seer, Warrior, Sleepless...) reflecting the power it grants. In order to progress in power, a character must assimilate the product and then drink the next elixir in the path (and you better not try mixing potions of different paths). Again, I can't go any further without unveiling some major elements of the setting and story.

CK Talon's translation is flawless, which is a requirement for such a story where there's a highly complex intrigue without useless element. He showed himself again as one of the best in this business.

So, in conclusion, the Lord of the Mysteries confirm Cuttlefish That Loves Diving as one of the prime Chinese fantasy author, on par with Er Gen and I Eat Tomatoes. The story of intrigue, occult and horror is excellent, the characters are awesome, the setting is wonderfully well built and the translation is top notch. I give it a full mark, 10 out of 10 without hesitation. I still prefer Throne of Magical arcana, but only as a matter of personal preference, both books are must-read.

PS: thanks to Cuttlefish That Loves Diving for writting this novel, CK Talon for translating it and Qidian for publishing it. <<less

Great Novel, loved the story, the world building and the side characters (well fleshed out), etc, etc (pretty much like every other positive review in here)

BUT

I despised the MC. His character, attitude and actions were frustrating to follow.

  1. Way too kind and selfless for a individual that walks the path of a beyonder (ppl with supernatural powers in the novel that hide behind the scenes). He keeps on giving loads of benefits to his friend without any form of return from them. Those items/benefits/cultivation material are basically items that the MC spent 10-40 chapters to acquire but they end up as gifts (or huge discounts) to strengthen his friends who are basically useless most of the time (with a few rare exceptions). These material/items could of been put to far greater use in the hands of someone like Fang Yuan (reverend insanity) or Leylin (Warlock of the magus World), like exchanging them for cash or traded for good potential support money, or hire a strong beyonder in times of need. MC could of at least placed a tax on any goods traded for money in the tarot club, because they are using HIS special boost. He instead provided some weaklings (emlyn, audrey, xio, fors) with a undeserved boost. Of course, some of you may think that they provided MC with some intelligence due to their status in society, but even that's not true, they were useless all the way (with very few exceptions, negligible compared to what they received) and leeched of the MC's benefits.
  2. Every sentence spoke by the MC is said with a smile or he chuckles. I'm constantly imagining Klein as considering himself superior to anyone he speaks to, giving himself a lofty attitude. Yes it could sound cool in most circumstances and readers love it but when it does all the time he sounds like showoff that's ahead of himself.

This is legendary. Disregard all the criticism of people who expected a typical chinese cultivation novel under a facade of a pseudo-european fantasy, you must at least try this. Surely it is not without demerits (you can clearly see the inspiration sources leaking throughout the novel), but at worst it only lowers the overall value by a maybe -0.5, which still makes it a superb 4.5/5 novel. Unlike aforementioned "cultivation novels that wear a mask of european fantasy", this is a decent, high-quality stuff, comparable to Warlock of the Magus... more>> World in quality and eastern/western and modern/classic mythology and fantasy integration. If you google for it, you can find up to 1420+ chapters in english, not worse in translation quality than the initial chapters provided here.

TL;DR: just try it, chances are high you'll like it. <<less
