Six months ago, tens of thousands of black phantom towers appeared all over the world, floating above the cities. Chemists, physicists, religious people… all of them could do nothing.

Six months later, people became used to the towers and no longer paid them attention.

One day, Tang Mo saw a flying insect crash into it instead of going through it. The next day, a sharp and clear child-like voice issued an announcement to all humans.

“Ding dong! November 15th, 2017. The earth is online.”

The black tower’s three iron-clad rules:

1. Everything is explained by the black tower.

2. 6 o’clock to 18 o’clock is the game time.

3. All players, please strive to attack the tower.

A very, very good novel.

MC isn't 'overpowered' (he's still cracked, but it's relative to his experience and intelligence.) he's an above average player who got where he is due to his intelligence and charisma. I do find it a bit frustrating how the author constantly nerfs him. When the Earth came online, everyone's strength increased, and as they solve black tower games and instances, and also gain props and abilities, they grow stronger. MCs ability allows him to take others abilities, which sounds OP, but the author shrouds this ability... more>> in mystery and giving it restrictions, which power scales MC. This is good, however his strength just doesn't.. Match his ability. It's very often that he is surpressed in fights despite being a top player with OP props and abilities. I know he used to be a librarian but it's still frustrating reading his lack of experience in fights (This really only shows up outside of black tower games and instances. He's OP in the game but not OP outside of it.). Maybe it only really feels like he's nerfed because he's surounded by powerful people, i.e. Fu Wenduo (ML), Mu Huixue, Bai Ruoyao, etc. But I want him to shine!

Speaking of ML, I really like his personality and relationship with MC. He's cold and generally apathetic, but when interacting with others (especially MC), he shows this rare arrogance that's so funny! A lot of the characters in the novel say his jokes are distasteful or lack awareness but honestly, every joke he makes is funny to me. He's also the real overpowered person in this novel. His ability is clouded in mystery and so is his background. When he appears, people know that he's someone not to be reckoned with. Despite this, Tang Mo (MC) can read him like an open book. The way they interact is like they're both telepaths. I like how they can just look at each other and tell what the other is thinking. Their teamwork is flawless. And naturally, he is a genius aswell.

The world-building is phenomenal. Especially regarding black tower games. The games aren't too ridculously difficult and you can follow along and solve the problems with them. I'm geniuenly curious how the author was able to do this, it's very hard to make puzzles that are coherent enough that even the reader can follow along. It gives the people who solve these games seem more human-like. The black tower bosses are also very nice. They aren't too unnecessarily evil that they seem like cannon fodder villains, but they are just the right amount of sinister to allow them to impose on the players. Speaking of the players, I like how not everyone seems s*upid so the MC can seem super smart and clever. They have their own intelligence that allowed them to survive this far and it's great that the author recognizes that it's s*upid to dumb them down in favor of the MC.

Spoiler

The only thing that confuses me about the novel is the Eve arc. I don't think the author properly provided closure and the reward for the arc confused me a bit.. What is the importance of it? It obviously is about the black tower and the meaning of it, but he forgot it completely when he woke up and they stopped talking about it very quickly afterwards. It seemed more useless when he directly asked the black tower about the stuff he wanted to know and the black tower answered. If this was the case, what was the point of Eve's reward? The only importance I see to it is the fact that Eve is related to Fu Wenduo's ability and it increased Tang Mo's strength.

[collapse]

Even though it has shortcomings, it is the first BL novel I finished and enjoyed thoroughly. I'm glad that other people enjoy it aswell. <<less

Not finished yet but I have to say this.

Love the novel and you MC and ML ofcourse. But still at some point it becomes boring. Like when a new game starts and you don't know what actually the game is. So I felt like I have to force myself to read it in order to know the interesting part and the twist and turn. So you need to have patience for that. Overall it's an exciting experience because even in I have to force reading that boring part it feels... more>> worth it in the end. <<less

I love it.

When I read this novel I'm wondering how will they reveal the information about why things happened. I didn't expect that it will be at the ending.

I like how the MC and ML isn't super OP. Their abilities are reasonable and their IQ isn't over the top. They can make mistakes and almost lost their lives but thanks to MOMO, they have a chance to start again. Also for the side characters. They have reasonable abilities base on their circumstances.

What I didn't really like is the instances in... more>> the novel. Not all but most of it. I don't really understand the flow of the games~ Don't get me wrong. It's not because I didn't read it but because I don't get why they think that way. It's hard to explain. Then I got bored reading the instances. So for the last 4-5 instances of the novel, I skimmed the beginning and middle of the game and then read how the game was solve.

It's actually entertaining. Not draggy. Really like it! <<less

The translation of this translator sucks. I remember reading this novel a year or so ago and remember the translation quality being great. I’m back to reread it again and was surprised to see that the quality has dropped so much. The new translator just copied and pasted every chapter from mtl without any editing.

For those who want to read a better quality one please search up the title on google and go to different site. This novel is awesome and totally worth reading.

Such a cool concept, executed in a very good way. Novel did not push romance too much.

Only nitpick is that the games are a little overcomplicated too read (props to the author and TL-er for figuring out these games). I sometimes skipped them if I didn't have the time to sit down and actually graph the games lol. Some logic for games were also super complicated so I would get lost easier if I did not try hard enough to digest the material. Super fun to try to figure some... more>> of them though.

Slow romance, I love that, and romance is kinda of secondary, I also love that. MC and ML work seamlessly together without even communicating properly sometimes and it surprised me. Super cool. Though the coincidence of MC and ML is unrealistic and the fact that they both are so smart and yet the MC is just a librarian, also a little unrealistic.

author killed my favorite character : (then again she killed many characters.

I love this novel either way, just for the how well written it was. The story flowed from one "arc" to another so smoothly, I sometimes forget that I should take a break lol. Really good writing, pacing, and quality TL. I have yet to read another book where a concept like this is executed this well. <<less

Tbh when I first read this, I was hoping for some steamy survival bl type of story... but anyway none of that mattered when I found myself finishing this in one sitting LMFAOO. Basically, instead of the ‘action’ I was looking for, what I got was the more blood pumping kind of action that made me pause and challenge my nonexistent reasoning and detective skills but bear in mind— I have no regrets whatsoever reading this. This novel is my either my top 1 or 2 for this genre, or... more>> similar genres (game/survive/horror/etc). Every instance and every fight got me twisting in my seat, or some other similar expression lol. Also, funnily enough...
Spoiler

in the later chapters... I only realized our MC and ML had s*x a chapter or so later. Which is funny to me coz I usually get it no matter how absurd or how strong the censorship is. And tbh I’m not even confident if it actually happened... but I think it did...?

[collapse]

But even without that, the story is still great imo. The romance is barely present but it is def there. And I also agree to other reviews that it is a crucial part in the novel even if it is almost invisible. Can’t really explain it in words but I imagined it if the story was without their feels, I think something would be missing.

Well, in other words... 10000/100 worth reading!!!! <<less

To be honest, the plot is very interesting and the events are written/carried out well. But really, it truly is a very slow romance so if you're here for the romance, don't expect too much. This story is more centered around the plot itself.

Still each event that happened, I found very unique and the reasoning behind the characters decisions and the games are overall explained pretty clearly. It's a very intriguing action plot, though it is not without some confusion.

Overall there's not a ton of romance stuff until you... more>> are like 2/3 through the entire novel. Yet you should read it because the games within the story are very interesting and intricate. <<less

I have finished the entire novel and my rating of it is 112517/10 (if you get the reference we're officially married)

This novel is amazing. Although it's not for everyone who's looking for a BL to read, people like me who actually enjoyed it can prove how great this novel is. This novel is superb, it's not something that I would go recommending to anyone who want to read a BL novel (unless of course they're looking for heavy physiological). To guide you before you read it, here are the... more>> things you might wanna consider before reading it:
⁃ Psychological. It might already say in the genre, but the psychological here is heavy, I'm telling you. It can break your heart or even leave you traumatized or both.
⁃ This novel contains smart stuff. There are a lot of science and math elements and references in this novel (theorems, cosmos, etc.). I'm not a smart person who studies any of the references so it got me confused and lost but you can just ignore it (at least that's what I did and it really didn't bother much on understanding the main story).
⁃ It doesn't really have strong yaoi. Not gonna spoil on that one. If you're looking for a strong yaoi and psychological, then this is not your cup of tea (strong psychological, yes, but strong yaoi, no).
Spoiler

But yes, there is yaoi here, it's just not strong.

[collapse]
⁃ BL is one of the main focus, but the novel's entire focus is the big picture, which is the main story. To explain it further, this novel has its own story, not just the romance (the romance isn't heavy because it's an apocalyptic setting). It doesn't only give the spotlight to the main characters but to others too. It is BL, yes, and it focuses on that but if you compare it to other BL novels that's entire focus is on the BL and romance, it's entirely different. It's not only Tang Mo and Fu Wenduo's story, but their story together before, during, and after the Earth went online.

In my experience and preferences, that's about it. I honestly think that more people need to read this because it's a really good novel. There are a lot of parts where you'd just be mind blowed and amazed of how good the novel was written. If you're going to read it, then do so! I hope you enjoy reading and have a great day! ≪3 <<less

Really loved it a lot. The MC and ML are cool asf, and their dynamic was just. Wow... The portrayal of unshakeable trust and being on the same wavelength as your partner constantly was so so amazing and really made them feel like a fated pair. this was also one of those novels which was so good at writing side characters, another feature I enjoyed immensely.

It was veeeery slow burn but the plot itself was enough to keep me reading, though it did seem a little too explanation heavy at... more>> times. I think my fav sections are the beginning: just the feeling of foreboding from the MC's very first game and the gradual buildup is fantastic, and the ending was also very very satisfying, the way (imo) everything looped round. I especially loved the first extra. Though I will say the latter half of the middle of the novel dragged on a bit as nothing that new or plot develop-y was really happening, but I just scanread some sections to get to the end lol.

Overall, this is a very good read. Pretty long, so don't read if you have other stuff to be doing because you'll end up binging it like I did lmao. But would recommend 100% :) 4, 5 stars from me <<less

Plot isn't bad, games are interesting and I was engrossed for around the first 130 chapters, but after that I cant say I enjoyed it as much.

There is so much potential but the characters don't even really use their abilities (abilities or props are banned most of the time). ML is supposedly OP but doesn't do that much and main couple are regarded as the best but still weak compared to instance bosses and have difficulty fighting other characters even when teaming up. They always win games using intelligence, but... more>> the logic/reasoning behind games aren't always fully explained.

And honestly, a huge disappointment is that the romance is badly written. It's awkward and cold and abrupt (there's no excitement or warm feelings when reading about the main couple's practically non-existent progression), and the novel may have been better without any romance at all (and this is coming from someone who loves romance as a focus or subplot).

This review has mainly negative comments, but overall it's not bad and I would rate it 3.5/5 stars. Give it a try if you're bored. It's still entertaining and definitely not the worst series I've read. <<less

This was a good story. I love the plot, as it kept me guessing from page to page. Love the relationship b/w MC and ML. They were equals who have as much as the other in terms of strength and intelligence.

I gotta admit that I skipped most of the detailed, logical explanations for these games, especially after Mario’s monopoly game. That bit was jut a whole lot unnecessary. I also didn’t appreciate the author’s notes at the end of every chapter. I was looking forward to discovering who the ML... more>> was, when they just told us right off the bat. And I know the little theatre bits were s’posed to be cute, but it didn’t fit the tone of either of our characters, with MC being referred to as a little wife all the time (I really don’t appreciate the heteronormative ideologies in my BL!)

Other than a few small points, I immensely enjoyed this story

oh

Spoiler

I didn’t understand why Tang Mo had to explain his every move to the other players whenever he won a game. I mean, come on bro, those are your future opponents, why do you feel the need to give them insight into your thinking? But then again, his revealing his insight never affected any plot in the future. But it was hella annoying.

I dropped after ch. 160! Far enough to do a fair review!

Plot:: Tons of people all over the world disappeared after weeks of the appearance of, (black tower), a weird big object hovering above the sky. The ones left were given strange powers and were froced to play strange life games in order to survive. MC and ML traveled together trying to survive and try to figure out what's going on.

This novel did a great job focusing on the plot! The games people were pulled into were pretty interesting.... more>> Kept me guessing, however after a while, kind of repeating, I lost focus.

This novel focus deeply on the plot so if you want a good fluffy BL, this is NOT it. It's more like MC and ML were only buddies. Lol. This is 4 to 5% fluff and the rest is just the whole story. Lol. It's the reason why I dropped this story. I want bl and it seems like they more like buddy with very little chemistry. I still gave it a 4/5 star because the plot is pretty good. <<less

4.8-4.9 stars.

It's been a while since I've finished this novel so a lot of the details are vague right now. However, I still remember the overall impression I had at the time I finished reading this novel. It was a wicked novel with amazing plot. The way the MC solved each of the obstacles/games/challenges was beautiful. The mystery and suspension kept me hooked until the very end. The MC is OP in both brain and brawn, which I just loved. This was my first survival-thriller novel and it set an... more>> unprecedented bar that I still haven't found one quite like it so far.

The romance is slow and is secondary to the main plot, but it can get quite hot sometimes! Overall, it was a very good read. <<less

It was a really nice novel, it kept me interested throughout the whole time I read it. I like how the relationship of tang mo and fu wenduo wasn't major but something still in the novel. I love the little parts of fu wenduo and tang mo being in a relationship if it was the normal earth. The first extra was really sweet and I loved how they got together.

AAAAaaa this was a ride~ (may contain minor spoilers)

When I first started reading this novel I was unsure of what to think; the strange plot was very intriguing but at the same time a little hard to adjust to in the beginning. But oh how I enjoyed it! After around 20 chapters I got used to the strange occurrences, and could fully let the novel speak for itself. The world building was so interesting, and never left me bored. Every day I would be exited... more>> to keep on reading, and every night I would get fever dreams displaying the magical and bizarre black-tower monsters and instances.

One could say that this novel is very plot-based, but the dog food was very delicious and made me squeal. But the longer you got into the novel, the more of a reality check it became. It became the kind of novel that you can't explain for anyone else, but at the same time is kinda eating you up from the inside in a good way? Hehe

All the characters were fascinating, and I love the MC and ML. The way their relationship progressed and grew into something so natural and special for the both of them was very heartwarming. And their two children hehehe~ It felt a little unrealistic how a lot things happened in China, but I could express that the MC was not op, and instead used his quick wits to survive.

Though, I think it was specifically the side characters that really established my love for this novel. They all had their distinct personalities, and didn't have to take part in the text for a long time to still be memorable. I didn't cry while reading this, mostly because I was too caught up in the thrill, but there were definitely places and situations that left me empty. Remember, this is a survival novel, and not everyone will be able to achieve their happy ending. I did notice that there were some plot-holes that the author never really mentioned in the main story, which was kinda off putting since this is the kinda novel that would really flourish with uncovered questions. But at the same time, I was mostly here for the ride, and not as much the results, so I am satisfied none the less. I am incredibly impressed by the author for writing such a complicated novel with so many new, surprising and impossible ideas. I could feel my own world crumbling around me as I was reading about how the world they had known was falling apart. The mysteries, the unfairness, the fear all felt so real and this novel definitely worth reading. (Especially if you want to escape real life and get devoured by a mystifying, grotesque and dreamlike world, where every fairy-tail creature is trying to kill you hehehe)

I strongly recommend it! ~~ <<less

[Deer, I'm back]

Lucky Yao is my favorite char in 'The Earth is online'

Okay, so anyways, I read this novel last year, April 2020 and I posted this review on another platform and I might as well add this here.

-This novel is such a a slow born. 200+ chapters and there's barely an answer on every questions. I read this only because it was tagged as 'Yaoi' and an 'online game', never thought it was more than that. I am satisfied yet disappointed at the same time.

Satisfied coz I love the plot and world building. The games are not boring. It was super fun and challenging [it fried my brain]. The characters are lovable. The mystery is carried out well, and it's humorous XD Well narrated, especially the dystopian setting.

Disappointing because *cough* I mainly read this for the yaoi tag but why the romance is so lacking. 200 chapters before you get a papapapapa that was brief and told in a metaphorical way. (Anyway, it might be because it doesn't suit the entire genre of the story, or if you read the author's other novel (Rebirth of the Supermodel) then the author's writing censoring style won't come as a surprise for you.)

I'd say this aspect of the novel really tested my patience. I never liked slow burn romance but since this isn't entirely focused on romance, I was okay—the games saved me.

The explanation at the end is very lacking. The only explanation we get is [from my own understanding] there's no designer of black tower, it is from the universe itself. It is a test cycle in a guise of a 'game' for humanity to determine whether they are worthy of cosmic resources. If not, they will be wipe off in the universe.

The author, introduced the important characters, but did not dig deeper on their background, especially those who played a key role like Bai Rouyao.

Edit: Some explanations were actually included in the extras. Which is a wonder for me, since explanations are crucial as that will be the judging factor, it should be included in the MAIN story, because some people may not read extras.

#Bai Rouyao was introduced as someone who was being investigated by the country and his information is strictly confidential, but then in the end it wasn't clarified what was really his identity. Does it mean it doesn't matter? Then what's the point of building a mysterious impression on him on his first appearance?

#Mo Huixue - her reason of wanting to die wasn't explored deeper, who was the person she resurrected and killed again? It is important for her character building.

edit: chapter 244, it was her sister she resurrected. And it was presumed that sister tried to kill Mo Huixue

#How did they get their abilities? It wasn't clarified. The only explanations provided are the speculations of the character. Once the black tower vanished, why did their abilities didn't vanished? Will it vanish or will it not? [Provided that Tang Mo still managed to show to Bai Rouyao about Mu Huixue's ability]

edit: It was shown on chapter 243, they did lose their abilities

#The black tower selection, those who experienced the accelerating heartbeat, means they gained the ability of the most powerful players from the previous game. Whether they survived or not from it, it's based on luck. So basically those who gets to experience the accelerated heartbeat were chosen randomly? [Luck is a type of strength]

#Who is Eve? Based on the bible, Eve ate an apple, Bai Rouyao ate an apple, is he Eve?

According to Fu Wendou's ability, the last person who has the genetic recombination ability was Eve—Eve was the person who completed the seventh floor. In the present, Tang Mo was the one who completed the seventh floor. Does that make him an 'Eve'? Or 'Eve' is simply a name of the player? And the Eve's instance and the Eve's Reward were simply named after that player?

And many more questions I can't name them. Of course some answers might be provided already and it's possible I only skip reading that part lol but anyway this novel is still a good read. Recommended~~~ <<less

First and foremost I love this so I'm really biased and say that this is a must read!! Some games are really confusing but don't quit and continue reading it's really good! Warning tho the romance isn't the point of this story and it's really slow burn

And their xxx scene happens in like 200 chapters ... more>>
Spoiler

this isn't really important (probably) but even if you find their xxx scene it will be confusing because the xxx scene was detailed as 'guns' that the 'guns' were 'loaded' and they were 'fired' 🤣🤣 it was my first time seeing an xxx scene was detailed like that lmao
