1. "If he's so smart why didn't he take a blanket?" He planned an escape that put him against the whole village. There were multiple instances of ingenious planning on his part, so forgive him if he overlooked one freaking thing. It'd be more weird if he got everything correct and made 0 mistakes.
2. "If he's so smart why did he only take Platinum coins?" Because no matter how smart you are, you are still confined by the information you have. Platinum coins were available to him in large amounts in his backwaters looking village. It'd be normal to assume that it was not that valuable.
3. "Why does he want to be a Civil Servant?" Because it's a safe job that he almost succeeded in getting in his last life. And after his trauma from this life as a child, it's understandable why he would be stuck on it.
4. "Why is he stealing when his rich? Why is he stealing question paper when he is smart?" Because that noble dirtied his clothes, and he didn't want to score too much. Are you even reading the novel?
The main character is not a good person, his actions are fueled by his whims. The story is an action, not slice of life. Most of the issues people complain about are explained later in the story. While I don't think this story is a masterpiece after completely reading it all of the low star reviews from early in the book are mostly people who are complaining about things that aren't actual issues, they just get resolved later. If the book can't keep them interested to where they get to that part its fine, my point is just that most of their complaints are resolved, albeit you need to wait a while. Now, I'm not going to bother writing a positive review since I've seen others that can convey the positives well so theres not much of a point, so instead since I found a negative review with a lot of criticism and I'm bored I'm going to go through their review explaining why most of their points are wrong (In my opinion). So, my response to bloggbigg's review:
So I'm just going to go down the list of bad things and respond to them... I'm going to italicize the parts I'm copying from there review (So people reading can tell what I'm ranting about)
I'm also going to try to avoid opinion parts like them saying its wish fulfillment (While listing that as a negative) since it depends on the person if they hate that type or story or not. Personally I hate that they are classifying this as a wish fulfillment because the only thing I can think of that is wish fulfillment is his strength (Which isn't even revealed at the point in the story that they are reviewing from) What classifies it as wish fulfillment? Just because there is an overpowered protagonist or other things doesn't mean its a wish fulfillment, anyway my point is just that people love to call anything with a harem or an overpowered protagonist a wish fulfillment. I'm not saying their aren't stories where its obvious the author is inserting themselves into the story but I completely disagree that this story and countless others are classified as wish fulfillment. In particular this story doesn't even have a harem or anything, the most that could qualify is op protag but I don't count that.
"A 'pantser' is an author who makes up a story as they go along. A 'plotter' plans things in advance. This author is 100% pantser from what I've seen so far."
Just to note, later in the story there are a lot of things that are plotted ahead of time. There are twists of characters or setups for other things. At the beginning there is even stuff during his escape arc that is a setup that won't be revealed until past chapter 300. While I can see where you are coming from if I only think of the first 30 chapters I also think its s*upid to be claiming the author is a 'pantser' despite having only read what is essentially the introduction.
---
Plotting seems non-existent. Story seems to meander from one random event to another
---
Yeah... It's the author setting up the plot...? The main character has just entered this area from the first time, the author needs to set up the world, the characters, ect. and to make it fit in with what they have/will establish about the main character they are making it random events. I'm not sure what exactly your expecting an author to do in this situation? I'll admit there are a few that are bad like the information agency but overall I really don't get what you expect the author to do when trying to set up the plot.
---
MC and his sister supposedly play 'multiple games of chess' simultaneously- which should imply a deep level of strategizing, thinking ahead, and advance planning. That said, the MC also can't remember to bring a thick enough blanket in case it gets cold, or proper money to buy things with when needed...
---
So this isn't revealed for quite a while but this is a part of their bloodline. Their minds are like normal people except for in specific situations. The explanation was something like if you see a stone thrown into a lake then you would see the ripples, but the crows mind ability thing can calculate the force, friction, ect. in order to essentially have foresight on the ripples. So when he is doing said deep-thinking its with this crow ability while his normal mind isn't able to operate at this level.
Plus as a side note things like the blanket are something that people would actually do. In the real world when planning for a trip you can consider things like your flight being cancelled, batteries dying, ect. but you might overlook something simple like brining a jacket. Den hasn't ever camped out in the forest and this isn't a problem in the village so its something that is simple but easily overlooked.
---
Author has you read a chapter about MC opening a bank account. Almost 2 more are needed for him to rent a room. Then he robs a noble of all his wealth including a particular crown jewel. A chapter? Two? No. It happens in between two paragraphs. He admits to it (as narrator) after his roommate reads about it in the paper.
Yep- you read 27+ chapters leading up to him actually becoming a master thief like in the title, just to have it skipped over when it finally happened.
Wait- what? 'Civil Servant, not thief?'
Oh yeah.
Well... he's become a thief for some reason.
Despite having a ton of money, and being under (lax) observation. I'm sure there's a good reason..
---
So first of all lupin is not a one time use, he does a lot of lupin stuff later so its not skipped over.
To note for this part of the story, his character isn't fully fleshed out yet but he is a whimsical type of MC, his actions are not fueled by justice or whatever, he just does what he feels like doing. If I remember correctly about the first time he was lupin then it also means that your skipping over a lot of the story when reading. The first time he was lupin it was because the prime minister would investigate anyone in his moms boarding house so he was lupin to cause a stir to create more work for the prime minister to keep him from investigating.
It took me like 3 days to read the story so my memory is a bit fuzzy but if I'm remembering right then your skim reading and then complaining about things that are actually explained in the story but your just skipping over them.
---
MC is set up as someone who wants to live a 'safe' life, but on one day he (himself) chooses to find & kill 40 demons within a few hours (as part of a different plan to facilitate his need to 'be safe').
Hey. If you can kill demons like others behead chickens- maybe you need to re-evaluate what's a 'danger' to you...
Later, when MC is sitting in the rain because he's homeless due to badly managing his planning/finances, someone offers to help him, and all he does is think $hitty thoughts about the guy while literally planning to use him then ditch him later.
You have rare demon cores and platinum, and still you need to be $hitty? ok. Whatever...
So many ways 'smart MC is dumb'.
---
This isn't me saying its bad but it feels like to me your negative about the story and going off about random crap that is justifiable without really thinking about it. It's something I notice I do often if I re-read one of my reviews for certain novels where some of my points just feel so illogical and I'm getting that from your review.
For this section first, he wanted to live a peaceful life, which means he didn't want to stay in a place where there are demons and dragons roaming and all of his family are battle maniacs, so yeah... even if he can kill 40 demons that wouldn't affect anything. It's not that its dangerous, its that he doesn't want to do it. (Plus he did not choose to hunt the 40, kinda... Its the tribes requirement to become an adult and its not hard for him so he did it. And it had tactical value since it delayed part of the chase team)
Second, thats his character. Yeah, its him being an as*hole but he is an egocentrical person who acts on his whims without caring if it affects other people. While he is being an as*hole I don't get why your acting like its this egregious sin the author has committed. This makes me think you want a mary sue type protagonist who doesn't have a single negative thought in their brain. While its mean of him to act that way, its realistic. It fits in with his personality perfectly, where he is cynical and being an a**hole. And with your second point about him having platinum, what does that have to do with anything? If your rich you should be nice and not be an a**hole? Those things don't correlate. Then you end it with "so many ways smart MC is dumb" but what does any of this have to do with him being smart... This situation is him being an a**hole... Being an as*hole has nothing to do with him being smart.
---
Although the MC starts out seeming somewhat agreeable, by the time you get to around chapter 22, he 'reveals' himself pretty clearly as someone who has contempt for, and uses others. This is a bit after he's already shown himself to be unappreciative, selfish, and able to casually throw away his family relations for ridiculous reasons. Well, that's not entirely true as he possibly plans on using his family connections later to get into the military (or in some other way use his uncle to his advantage)...
Being super rich, and having the opportunity to appreciatively pay back his prior benefactor with a lunch (at least) - the thought doesn't even cross his mind until he realizes he can use them to get more info. Only then does $hitty MC take out money to pretend to act like a human.
---
So first of all, he does have solid relationships and will help friends or family. It really bothers me how you keep asserting issues despite having read basically nothing in the book. First, while he does somewhat take advantage of pushover he is a calculating as*hole type character. Later once he developed a relationship with them he protects and helps pushover grow while being supportive. He just doesn't care about random strangers. Second, his family is full of nutjobs and his father did the exact same thing of running away from home to not become the chief. You keep applying things to this book that were never established, they are things your assuming from other books or common sense, which doesn't apply in these cases while acting like its a negative thing when your just going off about things you don't know about. Third, are you even reading the novel? It was made very clear from every point in the novel that he plans to avoid the military to avoid his uncle to avoid getting caught... This line really makes me think that your not even reading the novel because never once is anything implied like this. Your review I think has made it very clear your skimming the novel which is fine, but if your doing that then don't make a review listing a bunch of "negatives" that aren't even a part of the f*cking book. While its hard for me to easily tell what you know in the first 30 chapters I know for a fact that it never has anything related to him taking advantage of his uncle. This is just you getting upset that he is not a mary sue protagonist and then going on a random tangent about how he will take advantage of family despite you not actually reading this in the story. Then you go off about him being rich again, but again. Being rich means nothing for your personality or actions... A rich person can be an a**hole.
---
I'm going to skip a bunch of your other parts that are the same thing, where your getting upset about things that are again either his personality or just things that continue to reinforce that you didn't actually read this novel. For example you have a rant about how it doesn't make sense how he intercepted the hawks this is not an issue with the story, its an issue with your comprehension. They were ahead of him, that was explained. While you do have a point with things like the writing utensil the rest of this part is again just you not actually reading the story and then getting upset about things that were explained.
---
I'm going to omit their section of the review because there is a ton of text, it can be summed up as
- It doesn't make sense that a platinum is worth more than a jewelry story since platinum and gold is something jewelry is made out of
- Bunch of real world things about gold/platinum
- Stuff about the s*upid coin currency system
- And bit of the review I'm copy and pasting..
Bottom line? Author wanted to pointlessly brag some more and didn't do any research or use common sense. For someone writing a story with two 'geniuses' in it?... 'not very encouraging.'
Even worse, it makes the MC look dumb. What 'genius' can't properly prepare to purchase necessities? He even has the nerve to get snarky about it later when it's explained to him- though he obviously didn't know better...
Also, 'you're crazy rich on top of everything else- but you 'have to' run away?'
Rubbish.
---
- It doesn't say what the jewelry is made out of, so this feels irrelevant
- All your stuff about the real world is pointless, its an isekai... While real world stuff can sorta apply in this case its just the author using metals... If your unable to just simply accept that then reading must be hell for you.
- Completely agree with the s*upid coin system... Explaining each denomination of coin and all that stuff is completely s*upid and something I do agree is an issue. Something a lot of isekai do and I completely agree its something bad
- And for the part I copied and pasted, its an isekai so just think of it as different rather than criticizing it for not following the real world values of the metal. Then your line about how for someone writing a story with two geniuses in it just aggerates me. Get off your f*cking high horse, you are upset that they didn't do the real world comparison of f*cking metal in an ISEKAI story. Its another f*cking world, for arguments sake you don't know how much gold or platinum there is in the world, it can all be f*cking different. Now, the author probably didn't put that much thought into it but the point still stands... Its another world so stop applying real world sense to it. Then you have the gull to insult the author and try to compare it to him writing about geniuses since they didn't decide to spend time researching metal to apply their world around it? It really pisses me off how presumptuous you sound while going off about the s*upidest point. Plus, while writing a story with a genesis does require the author to be somewhat smart it can also be done just by allowing them to infer things with little information, to make a character feel smart its more about how its written than intelligence. This part in particular really pissed me off, this review makes it obvious that you skim read the book, got upset at things that aren't even an actual problem in these parts, then you go on a rant about things that don't matter to an isekai and then act like your better than the author and just act like a presumptuous as*hole while probably praising yourself that your in the right. For all your rant about how the main character acts like an as*hole your no different, your reading a novel that someone put out for free (Giving you entertainment) and then proceed to act like an a**hole. And just to clarify I'm not saying I'm not an a**hole, my point with this is how they constantly in their review bash the main character for being an as*hole to someone helping them so I'm pointing out that this person is also being an as*hole for no reason to an author of a book they didn't even pay for. I'm by no means saying that I don't do this, I'm doing it right now in this section, humans are often horrible including myself, I'm justifying this part to myself by saying they are being an as*hole to the author so I can be an as*hole to them for doing that, but that doesn't mean I'm not being an a**hole.
And again, your going off about the main character being rich... What is your problem with this? Your getting upset about the most random shit. Its a story, its meant to be entertainment. Do you want the story to be a short about how a guy thought about running away and then realized he was rich so he doesn't need to? I just cannot understand why your so upset about the most basic plot setup points, especially the him being rich part. You are acting like him having money would make him a saint and keep getting upset about it, why though. Why is him having money such a big deal? Then you go on yet another thing about how what genius can't properly prepare to purchase necessities but this just feels like you not thinking for 5 seconds. He has lived in a village that doesn't use the currency without any opportunity to learn the currency... So, your saying that if you took a genius person and gave them a bunch of the highest denomination of currency and threw them into that country without them knowing the real world comparisons they wouldn't have any issue? A f*cking genius doesn't mean they can generate knowledge from nothing, it means they can infer more from little information. He still would need time to learn prices and adapt and the fact that you don't realize this makes me annoyed because you keep going off about how s*upid the MC is and acting like this is because the author is s*upid despite it just being that your too s*upid (or more likely just not actually thinking from the main characters perspective and instead applying your "real world applications" and doing something s*upid like taking the fact that knowing pricing is common sense and applying it to the character rather than realizing that for this character it wouldn't be common sense, hence you get upset about them lacking this "common sense" when in reality it just you being s*upid.
---
Wonky naming all over...
Sister is named 'Hestia' (virg*n Goddess of the Hearth (Greek)).
Brothers are 'Galahad' and 'Gawain' (King Arthur & Knights of the Round Table (English))
Wanna-be Empire over-throwers are random zodiac signs (Scorpion, Libra, etc. (Babylonian))
Just all random 'whatever the author (or translator maybe) thinks is cool'.
---
I really don't get your point here... its f*cking names... Some stories might use them and apply the lore of that name others dont, at the end of the day its a f*cking name for a character. I cannot understand why your listing the fact that their names are from multiple other things as a negative. Even if it was what the author thinks is cool why does that matter? I just find it really s*upid how your complaining about how their names are from different things... How do you actually enjoy reading if your this stuck up, with this level of pickiness every single story out there must be awful to you if you can't take things like metals not being a real world comparison when another world would be different or the fact that they have names from different things... I just really cannot for the love of god understand why you even feel the need to list this as a negative when its the characters names. While you can maybe with a stretch make an argument about world building (How names like hestia aren't similar to bloodstone) it just doesn't f*cking matter, anyone picky enough to hate a book over the names being from different things should just quit reading isekai since they will never be able to enjoy them.
---
Useless pop culture references that add nothing to the story (for some reason).
I like Naruto as much as the next guy- but who cares about/remembers Itachi? (the tag-on traitor big brother/'mu*der of crows' of the less cared about traitor Sasuke/'giant hand winged freak') ? Not even going to rail on about 'Jojo's Bizarre Adventure', just wondering why the author thinks the audience should know these things...
Borderline fan-fiction (or whatever you call the casual ip theft of 'borrowing' the force balance push from Skyrim).
Cramming 'Fus Ro Dah' into your story because you think it's cool?... Yeah, whatever. Too bad it totally doesn't fit with anything else done so far.
---
Again... Not sure how you enjoy reading... The references are there because the main character feels like it and some of them I find funny. (You wouldn't of gotten there but a deer mount that can be created with alchemy when made by the MC plays christmas songs and is a play off of Rudolf, its just random and silly so I found it funny) and its not that the author thinks the audience should know these things but more they are just adding them for fun. Your part about how it adds nothing to the story, yeah its references... And your part about how it doesn't fit in with anything else, why are you so obsessed with the real world comparisons. Plus I believe that was the main character doing that which in that case its just them f*cking around again so it does fit in...
Overall I started this as just a way to kill time but your review actually started to piss me off the more I read it. You keep asserting things as negatives despite saying things that make it obvious your skim reading the book and jumping to conclusions since you can simply read it and see that its wrong. Then you make random claims that don't even apply and then insult the author while acting like a pretentious a**hole. I just really for the life of me cannot understand why you even bother reading novels if your so picky that something as simple as the names being taken from random old ips like the zodiacs / hestia is enough to make you upset. There have been times when I've disliked a story and probably did a similar thing to your review where I bash it unjustly and I'm trying to be better about giving it fair non-biased reviews but even with my worse I don't think I've gone to the level where I'm complaining about the real world price of metals, comparing it to another world that could have completely different levels of metals (So our worlds don't apply) and then insult the author for it. While you do have a few good points I think they are completely drowned out by how the rest of your review is about random s*upid things that for most of them your not even correct on (And not correct with just the information you read, not something that you would have to read further to know, because again... you would skim read and miss information and then jump to incorrect conclusions)
Anyway, I really hope that nobody read your review and got turned off from this novel because of it because half of it is just completely wrong (Not even a difference in opinion, wrong because you are going off things that aren't in the book) while the other half are just your personal opinions or random weird things like how there are references. I'm sure a lot of people just saw the block of stuff in the negative and didn't bother to fully read through it and if that kept them from trying the novel than I feel like its a pity, because I really do think that your review is full of nonsense.
-
- You can genuinely enjoy reading it if you set your expectations aside.
Hope they translate the Special Extra chapter... where is my fill of the side story about the Romance!!!! Seriously hope the Author write something about it without leaving it with no real beginning or ending.
