Now, eight hundred years later, Xie Lian ascends to the Heavens for the third time as the laughing stock among all three realms. As an avid reader since childhood, whenever someone asked me for my favourite book/s, I would more likely ponder on it for a long time...

After having read the translated novel to the end..I can now say that Heaven Official's Blessing is one of my favourite!

Xie Lian and Hua Cheng are my comfort couple...I dont care about some boring arcs or backstories. I loved reading about the slow burn. For me, a book is a win when I've cried, laughed, got angry, afraid of turning the page, read all night and... more>> still wish that it never ends. <<less

english is not my native language, sorry for mistakes (veeeery influenced by an automatic translator). this may have minor spoilers, not so much, so I didn't put spoiler warning on they all.

books: book 1 was very interesting, even if the first chapters were boring because of world's introduction, but not bad (really good!). ghost city arc, yujun mount, the country of banyue... they were so cool, I got stuck in narrative.

book 2 is my favorite, a so very well built flashback; the angst isn't excessive (good... more>> thing!), but it's heartbreaking to see the kingdom of xianle falling, and the "if you don't know how to live anymore, then live for me" scene was one of most beautiful scenes in tgcf

book 3: things went wrong here, was contradictory. black water arc was the best in the whole book but mount tonglu arc was sooo boring, I could barely read without getting distracted all the time; long, with descriptions occasionally unnecessary for the story.. buuuut, black water arc, stunning! everything here is wonderful, and the dynamic 'shi brothers - he xuan' is great and surprising. I was honestly shocked and desperate.

book 4: unlike book 2, book 4 is excessive and tiring. much unnecessary angst without pause. it's not well done, it's boring. feels like the author wants to be praised for writing the most ravishingly sad character backstory ever, even if it's actually quite drawn out. but, it's really sad. especially when that thing happened with xie lian's parents, I broke, everything made me so sad.

Spoiler

despite this, xie lian's arc of despair after losing everything and wearing the funeral white clothes and mask laughing and crying, going to attack yong an for revenge, wasn't convincing. even though he lost everything, he still had faith on humans, and he didn't immediately complete revenge (bai wuxiang himself said so). clearly, I understand, the character of xie lian is about standing firm to your ideals and not perishing in the face of adversity, it's admirate and beautiful and I can see, but remains unconvincing.

[collapse]

book 5: I couldn't like it as much as I wanted to, but there were very interesting points like mei nianqing telling about the prince of wuyong. it's still boring. the final fight wasn't really exciting, I found a lot of things pointless, and spent the whole novel wanting to see xie lian using a lot of his full strength, but it lasted 2 chapters at most; disappointing. not really bad, but nothing unexpected or groundbreaking. cool, and it's all.

secondary characters, who were very interesting, at a certain point were forgotten and had no conclusion. what happened to them, especially jun wu? I get frustrated for don't know, but this is unfortunately typical of mxtx.

i think it would be better if book 4 was about hua cheng's past, because his whole character is shallow and... strange. I can understand his devotion to xie lian, but I don't like characters without self-motivation (it seems like everything about him is geared towards xie lian. lan zhan in mdzs is very attached to his duties in lan sect, and luo binghe in svsss is focused on winning over others demons to be their king, but hua cheng is the ML who seems to have all his motivations towards xie lian, and it's kind of pathetic) ; he's pretty cool, but more depth would be nice!

xie lian is concise, well structured, but it seems that next to hua cheng he gets dumb. like, the guy has walked in many places for 800 years and keeps asking hua cheng silly things? doesn't he know about them? how can you be so oblivious? sure, it's a minimal thing, but... one thing to notice is that xie lian, after so much suffering, is emotionally inert. he has no facial reaction to numerous personal moments and does not break down when he is offended and, at times, the novel uses this as humor (because the xie lian himself is humorously self-deprecating). he can seem very still, but that's understandable, especially for people like him; I can understand that very well, so him as a character is kind of personal to me.

white no-face is a great villain, and mxtx's most interesting characters are. I don't like antagonists whose main goal is mostly more revenge and power, and even though white no-face wants those things, it's not all his character is after. his personality and backstory are nice and well done like xie lian's. I wanted to know better about which end he took, but history doesn't say, unfortunately

hualian are a cute couple with touching moments but also boring, many times, and seem unattainable. managed to get attached to bingqiu and wangxian because my relationship looks like their dynamic but hualian doesn't. it seems like they always read each other's minds. how is this possible? I like hualian a lot, they're cool and nice and cute, but only made to admire and not to understand.

overall I really enjoyed this read despite having a lot of criticism. my grade is 3.5-4/5. I would like it better if there were fewer chapters (avoid unnecessary scenes!) and if secondary characters were better used, in addition to the main couple having several points of improvement. I liked it, but I didn't find it all spectacularly extraordinary as the fandom says (some parts really are!)

it was too long, I'm sorry! thanks for reading! <<less

This is without question MXTX's best novel series.

The writing style is beautiful, story is easy to catch on and not very complicated. Side characters are interesting, and the characters are easy to love (, or hate).

Romance is just perfectly written. It doesn't get in the way of the plot nor is it underwhelming.

... more>> My only complaint is Hua Cheng's backstory, which is.. Nonexistant. It is an essential part, especially when side characters get more detailed stories than the ML..

Book doesn't include smut, which I think is refreshing for MXTX.

My favorite part,

Spoiler

Is the writing of Bai Wuxiang (Jun Wu). He is easily the best villain MXTX has written. He is manipulative, pretends to be caring for Xie Lian all while being so abusive towards him. We can truly catch on Xie Lians fear towards him.

[collapse]

Overall Tian Guan Ci Fu is a beautiful piece of literature. I've seen many mixed opinions about this book, because It may not be to everyones tastes, but it is truly a beautiful must-read danmei. <<less

A kind 8/10 stars.

It is overrated but that's well-deserved. A love letter in a form of a novel.

I saw a review before that commented that tgcf was 'flawed, but nevertheless, a masterpiece', and I couldn't agree more with that. Whether you have noticed it or not, MXTX has put careful details between the main couple's relationship- almost to the point where I'm in disbelief of the extra precautions she placed. Beautiful engraved symbolisms such as Xie Lian being represented as a flower tied in perfectly with Hua Cheng being... more>> a butterfly (the butterfly cherishes the flower), all the way down to just Hua Cheng's name itself, has been woven with hundreds of details that builds a love that's so poetically mesmerising.

I would say tgcf was perfectly paced. It was enough to build the fantasy world and it was enough to understand the personalities of the characters introduced. However, there are some arcs that are boring to read and sometimes the adventures seemed a bit repetitive throughout the novel. It has many side-quest journeys where the Xie Lian doesn't really have an end-goal; and the only thing that really motivates readers to continue, is that thin line of romance @ the beginning.

Spoiler

But MXTX manages to form one later on in book 3-ish with Xie Lian and White no-face. I was then intrigued with who the calamity supreme was... even had a theory that it was Xie Lian from the future. It was a nice refresher and certainly gave me more motivation to finish the novel.

[collapse]

For the building of both Hua Cheng and Xie Lian's relationship, some parts were cheesy and cliche, whereas some were warm slice-of-life experiences. The cliche parts included 'I need spiritual energy; transfer by kissing!' or 'I am in need for CPR' types of scenes... but although very cliche, it was well-written cliche scenes that doesn't make you cringe as much. It is their simple moments together that forgives these cheesy scenes- scenes that wraps their love with a warm stuffy feeling that even I would think about days after finishing tgcf.

"Only after having met you did I discover that it's such a simple thing to be happy." - Xie Lian.

The complete devotion between Xie Lian and Hua Cheng is what makes this novel a masterpiece. The way they admire each other, and the way they accept one another's flaws, is what makes this novel a pure love letter. It is very difficult to achieve that in a novel, especially a BL romance novel.

However, it is a fact that tgcf is flawed. Various adventures were boring, sometimes the logic doesn't make sense, and there were subtle scenes made you feel frustrated when reading. There were certainly unnecessary side-characters that added to nothing besides from completing that one weak quest Xie Lian had to take on (the fact that I don't remember the characters' names...), and sometimes the interactions between the two protagonists were cliche. But, even with all of this, the novel is still a masterpiece. It made me cry. It made me smile. And it made me feel very bittersweet. Because the love between Hua Cheng and Xie Lian, made you genuinely believe that soulmates exist.

I think the original chinese novel placed more emphasis of hulian's love. There were many poetry references, well-known metaphors, and plainly, the writing sounds more attractive in chinese. But even in english, tgcf remains a masterpiece. When I had finished this novel, I felt very appreciative that I encountered it in my lifetime. That I had decided to pick it up and read it. Although some scenes rlly bored me out, not once did I feel that this novel was a waste of my time. I am happy that I read it.

It is a love poem disguised as a novel. Something that BL romance (or even straight romance as well) will never see in another decade. Boring, but beautiful. <<less

Crying because I know I'm never gonna experience a romance/love like this. This is very obviously MXTX's most recent book, and you can tell that she's come a long way from SVSSS (no hate on it, I do love it, but her writing has improved soooooo much!)

Every single character here is memorable and unique - like you're reading about real, 3 dimensional people. The descriptions take you away, and it's hard to believe that they don't exist in real life. I close that book and FEEL LIKE I've just... more>> killed someone. Because they LIVED and BREATHED.

I'm not gonna talk about the fact that this book is one of the only ones to make me ugly sob into my pillow all throughout the night reading it. Nope. Not doing that.

I'm looking forward to more of MXTX's novels!!!!! <<less

This is quite possibly, the best danmei I've ever read, and an extremely poignant and worthy story even without the m/m aspect. The visual created by the author (and the translator!!! So much thanks to the translator for their hard work with this spectacular translation!!) is nothing short of an artistic masterpiece. I think of this story often, and I use it as a source of personal inspiration. Some of the chapters are extremely painful and heart wrenching to read, but the story is ultimately an extremely uplifting one, very... more>> good for the soul. The characters are absolutely excellent - extremely well-developed, complex, even the minor background characters are fully fleshed out, and the main leads have truly compelling personalities that will make you pray for their happiness. They all feel like real people, which is a great accomplishment. And Hua Cheng is the best gong ever :) Unlike many danmei couples, they are unproblematic and have an extremely pure love, no toxicity at all here. Normally I don't read so much shounen ai, I prefer yaoi, but this danmei absolutely cannot be missed. Much love to the author and translator for bringing this work of art to us <3 <3 <3 I will never forget this story!! <<less

Actually, this novel was a heartbreak for me.

The firts book was fun and interesting, introducing great characters and setting up a lot of potential for the novel.

The second book was genius. I would even recommend it reading in itself as well. The story telling and dramaturgy was both fantastic.

However, from book three things only went downhill. The main problem was IMO the plotholes between scenes that the author wanted to write, and thus forced the story to cohesion by all the wrong means: the MC went OOC all the time,... more>> side characters were appearing and disappearing randomly just to solve conflicts faster, storylines were cut off in the middle. Not to mention the akward, forced romantic interactions between the MC and the ML, with no depth or consequences. I really feel like the execution from book three was rushed and messy. I really hope the author reedits this story like Mo Dao Zu shi later, because it does have potential and would be worth it.

I also think that the authot strenght lies in the story telling of Book 2 : Describing events from a greater time period with only writing a few meaningful scenes that can outline the whole story, and with a rather objective tone, letting the characters' actions do the talk.

I feel like in this and also her previous novels, even after a lot of anticipation and building, the big dramatical explosion between the main characters never really happens, or it is excecuted poorly.

Spoiler

The breaking point was for me the Wind masters story line. It was interesting and well written (even if a bit overcomplicated) until the confrontation of the Black Water demon. It should have been a big confrontation between the MC and the ML : Xie Lian was friends with the Wind Master, and a very sympathetic person, so he should have been greatly affevted by the horrifying scene that happened before his eyes. San Lang of course wanted to protect him, so he was trying to stop him from interfering from the start, then finally forced his soul back to his body, preventing him from helping his friend (oc he could not do anything but at least could have seen/heard what happened after, where they went etc)

Xie Lian was not in a powerfull state, but his character should have tried to save the Wind Master no matter how impossible, why San Lang held him back despite being his truted friend.

But instead of Xie Lian getting angry at him, he just does not give a damn. (Even San Lang points out this in the novel...) He forgets about saving his friend, and somehow does not seem to have any memory of himself being a martial god, letting himself be told what to do.

Then the following archs despite some good moments are only becoming messier and more incoherent...

Honestly, I was a bit hesitant at first, to start reading this novel because of its length, but I am a fan of MDZS, so I figured why not. Initially, I struggled a bit in the first few chapters, like I felt that I could not get into it, but let me tell you. It's very much worth it when you finally understand what's going on and you have familiarized yourself with the world and the characters. The plot itself was a tad bit predictable, at least, I somehow predicted... more>> it. But man, MXTX sure does know how to write angsty and sad backstory for her characters, especially our main character Xie Lian. I really admire him for staying true to himself and staying strong despite his terrible and unfortunate circumstances. Moreover, the lines and interaction between Xie Lian and Hua Cheng is just *chef's kiss*, especially this line: "If your dream is to save the common people, then my dream is only you." Boy, this line doesn't fail to move my heart to tears. Anyway, there are also other enjoyable side characters, specifically SQX. Gotta love that guy.

I do see how other people might not like this book because it actually took me a few tries to really get into this and somehow reach the point where the plot picks up. But as I have mentioned, the later part of the book is definitely worth pushing through the first few chapters. <<less

I have completed total 244 chapters recently (not yet the extra 8 chapters because I couldn't find that) and it's really good.. MXTX is such a brilliant writer and the works are excellent.. The story of XL & HC make me feel really soft.. Though it's a BL but the love story is at the another level..A true love between a Heavenly God Xie Lian & a Demon King Hua Cheng, just wonderful.. This novel helps me to be more mature.. I'm loving this novel more than anything..

Thank you MXTX for such a excellent work and more more thank you for translating it in English, without that it was impossible to read the novel..

No doubt this story deserves 5 stars, everything is so well explored, the world building is phenomenal and the characters are so well fleshed out.

This might be one of the few books that made me cry like a baby.
Spoiler

book 4 was absolutely brutal for me, the author gives you this cinnamon roll of an MC who shines so much and has such an optimistic view only to slap your face with the fact that to be happy with the crumbs he is given he went trough so much misery until he reaches that same “optimism”, Ruoye’s origin made me sob and let’s not talk about the 100 stabs and how ML was forced to watch the person he loved, the person he worshiped and was devoted to be treated like tr*sh by all those around him

[collapse]

I think one thing that MXTX does really REALLY well in her novels is that the point of view given to us is not omnipotent, and our perception of every character is given to us by MC, and not everything is as it seems and that just makes it so much better. If you go on to read this book, don’t expect 1 dimensional characters, every single character has their motives, their beliefs and their story, so don’t dislike someone so quickly like I had the mistake of doing.

I hope everyone can read this book, it’s a beautiful story and the main couple’s love is just so pure, it’s full of devotion and desire to protect, you won’t regret reading this!

The perfect novel to me. In my top 3 novels of all time.

Honestly she is a brilliant author. I'm so glad I found out about danmei and specifically this novel. I'd gotten tired of reading regular American novels, not having enough LGBT rep, and there's a huge world of danmei!

This should be a novel I and so many others can go out and buy in English (ty translators!!!<3). I have so much respect for her and her writing, the plots, and characters.

I read it all in 5 days, losing sleep... more>> over it. It leaves you with so much, and really hits deep.

Sorry most of my reviews aren't specific, just about the emotions it leaves and characters lol

I love the characters and the romance <33 Hua Cheng is the ideal man like wow I want a Hua Cheng pls, and I'm not even interested in men haha.

It's written BEAUTIFULLY. So many beautiful scenes. I'm an artist and I wanted to draw the characters and environments and wanted to write until my hands dropped off. It's so INSPIRING!

The world she creates is so detailed and interesting, and there are so many little pieces you pick up along the way, so much foreshadowing, I couldn't help but make guesses right along with the characters on their journey~

It's deep and has many heart wrenching moments, dark gritty moments, it goes places that a lot of novels I've read don't, which I really appreciate. I love how she can make dangerous and monstrous things beautiful, and make them absolutely terrifying and horrific to the point where you have to take a break because it's so sad, or makes you so angry... and parts where it's so beautiful you have to screenshot the novel or save the page.

I love how she wraps up everything!! And Xie Lian's saying of "I didn't know whether to laugh or cry" was just too great xD They're so funny.

I'll probably keep adding to this review as time goes on haha. I've read other danmei since and they've all been amazing but this is still my #1.

If you find it hard to read novels, especially long novels, I recommend using Speechify or some other text to speech app! That's how I've been reading all my novels recently and you can work on other things while doing so~ :) <<less

I absolutely loved Mo Dao Zu Shi and so I had high expectations of this and as promised, things started interesting at first but slowly, the enthusiasm died down.

There are a few reasons really why I both hated and liked this work.

Cons:

... more>> -> Hua Cheng is by far the biggest reason I love this, I just hate it that he doesn't have that much depth. There was no way to ever know what had been going through his head at all because of the perspective.

-> The mystery interspersed with comedy roused my interest from completely dissipating.

--> some scenes really were interesting for me to read and I liked guessing along.

Cons:

-> the biggest drawback for me was how MC is portrayed.....

Oh, MC had such a thing happen to him? It's heart wrenching!

  1. Oh, this terrible thing also occured? Such a thing happened, it makes my heart ache more for him---- it was fine and all the first few times. But as it kept on occuring and occuring, everything became less and less pleasing. I cannot tell you enough how it freaking annoyed me. Yes, MC is a pure white lotus but damn it, all those plot portraying of his pathetic situations one after another just succeeded in making me skip more and more parts. Having to read them was just pure torture so I just skimmed over or entirely skipped the chapter.
-> two. MC's character portrayal is confusing. Just like someone upstairs said, if he's that pure white lotus, how could he even stand entering the demon's territory with there even being human chopped limbs on display. Like---wtf?

-> Everything else was reduced to the background and became the foil to MC's martyrdom and most tragic experiences. *Sigh <<less

How good is this novel? So good that I finished it within 2 days (with lack of sleep of course). I actually re-read this once as well. Although there isn't much smut scenes (it's shounen ai, duh), even in the extra (unlike MDZS), the plot of the novel just keeps me going.

🔴 Not suitable for readers looking for smut, romance oriented, fluffy, angst. All in all, you have to enjoy the plot... more>> to enjoy this novel, otherwise it'll be a tough and long ride. <<less
