Another great novel by MXTX. This is Probably one of her bestest work regarding with the world building and Story progression and Writing (In case of Couple, Romance and Chemistry, WangXian Still Stand A Top...... not that HuaLian is not good. Their Romance is so beautiful and very emotional with so many moe and romantic moment I can't get enough off). She improved a lot although I am Kind of disappointed since there was no 'PaPaPa' Scene (After Reading previous 2 yaoi novels, shifting to shounen-ai is difficult. Even though... more>> I knew it was shounen-ai, I was so much waiting for 'PaPaPa' scene).

I liked how this time author made Xie Lian realize his feeling for San Lang in the mid way and not at the near end (unlike her previous novels). So many romantic scene and also so many painfull scene. This author really has a thing for making seme's Suffer from one-sided love;

Luo Binghe (SVSSS) : 9 Probably [3-4year of crush (i think) + 5 year of uke disappearance],

Lan Zhan (MDZS) : 20 years in anime (7 years of crush+13 years of uke's death), 16 years in drama (3 years of crush + 13 years of Uke's Death) and still not sure about it in novel tho (except for uke's death for 13 years) and Finally

Hua Cheng (HOB) : freaking 800 years.

I wonder if the next one will be even longer *hahaha

There were so many shitty character in here but I really can't fully hate any of them. Everyone of them is so miserable.

I am so excited about her next work. Waiting for her new work to get translated soon. <<less

Overall: 5/5.

Fully worth being a published novel and far from being just a danmei guilty pleasure. I wish I could erase my memory of this so that I can discover its greatness again. Whelp, guess I'm a MXTX fangirl.

Story: Come for the BL and stay for the plot (well, and also the BL). The story is well-written that it could stand on its own legs even if the BL elements were taken out. This is the best novel I've read where the relationship between the MC and ML develops organically... more>> with the story, and in turn that relationship drives certain events in the story.

The setting is heaven/earth and ghosts/spirits. MC was the crown prince of a great nation that fell into ruin and now ascends to the Heavens for the third time ~800 years after his initial ascension (and subsequent two demotions). MC is first assigned a few smaller tasks but then, of course, gets roped into schemes that shake the very foundations of the Heavens.

Good combo of action, drama/scheming, and fluff/humor. There is a good deal of tragedy as well--which I think accounts for a lot of the lower starred reviews the novel has. Regardless, characters are motivated/driven and scheme and respond to events realistically. The multiple arcs culminate satisfyingly in the ending climax. The defeat of the end game baddie is a personal victory for the MC as well as the group saving the world. This is a happy ending!

Similar to Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, there are time skips/flashbacks in this novel; however, time transitions are much more fluid and don't break up the flow of the story. Although there might be some disappointment at first during a flashback arc on realizing that the relationship between MC and ML in the present time will be delayed, the compelling plot will quickly bury that disappointment because 1) the story is great and 2) it actually gives great backstory to the relationship between MC and ML.

MC: The shou. Far from a damsel in distress and his personality actually reflects someone that has traveled between the earth and the heavens for 800s years : witty, kind but not oblivious to danger, calm through danger, resilient, self-reliant. He certainly has his downs (arc 4 will pull at your heartstrings!) but stays true to his self.

ML: The gong. One of the Four Great Calamities, he hits the perfect amount of OP-ness and arrogance without being unrealistic/annoying. The novel does a great job at showing why ML is so devoted to MC (800 years!). Amazing backstory.

Relationship development: So good! ML starts off as the OP mystery man who is indulgent towards MC for whatever reason. Interactions between the two will have you smiling/smirking and wanting more. ML's interest is obvious from the get go, and MC comes around in a way that feels natural. <<less

Why is there no 7 star review!! The great MXTX wrote anthr great story. At first u may not be accustomed to her style of going back n forth btw the present and past timeline. I actually found it a bit annoying when reading GDC. But in this story the sneak into the past created such a beautiful, heart wrenching story and really bring out that uniqueness of MXTX style.

I can't praise enough abt this novel and I'm an avid reader, reading countless novels and mangas yaoi or non yaois.... more>> It's just so very romantic and angsty but the right kind. It tells you what love and loyalty mean. The side characters were interestingly written, their personalities strong enough to be remembered and not just there for the sake of being there.

This in my opinion is the best wuxia yaoi story I've read surpassing even GDC. Def a MUST READ!!!!and recently it's been adapted to manhwa and the art is really beautiful. And when I saw the art I just melted cos I remembered the story. <<less

Reading this after MDZS, I can definitely tell that mxtx have definitely improved in her writing. This have got to be my favorite mxtx novel to date. There is still flaws in her world building, but it's definitely organic enough that you will be drawn and be invested into it. Not to mention, all characters are likable even if I get annoyed with them at certain point.

When I have time I'll edit this and include more details as to why I love this story so much. Just know that hua... more>> cheng is best boy and xie lian deserves all the happiness. Love their love and their chemistry. <<less

For all its strengths (and flaws) I loved the story. I cried when I read books 2 and 4 (I'm a sucker for flashbacks) and I was delighted with the mending relationships and new friendships. Every character has a story in this, every ascension had its price. Suffering wasn't limited to the MC and ML, everyone had a share.

There are complaints about the story's sheer magnitude and I understand. It's an undertaking, and it's hard to equate the investment and satisfaction when the focus is on the side characters we... more>> don't like as much. To be fair, the main plot wouldn't take as long if the side stories weren't there. But this would not be a story about morality and gods, ghosts, and humans if the scope was so limited. The author's choice to include subplots and mystery adventures are reminiscent of compilations of folklores or a book of legends. Heck, it's kind of like the Journey to the West in a way. Every god handled their problems according to their principles. Xie Lian was naive and optimistic, and he suffered.
Spoiler

Shi Wudu was ruthless (I love you 15º), and he fell to a revenge plot.

All in all, I think the scale of the story is what made it outstanding and beyond a mere romance.

I read this after MDSZ, and to be fair, I keep comparing the two. I read this essay comparing MDSZ and TGCF on AO3 that said MDSZ is character driven and TGCF is plot driven. The first is a conglomeration of different character goals clashing them having to resolve their past. The latter is how the characters had to deal with tragedies that came their way. I liked that comparison a lot. Another point someone made was gods and ghosts remain constant, but mortals change. Likewise in TGCF, the characters cling to their ideals or obsessions until it ruins them or they overcome all obstacles. In MDSZ, the characters f*ck themselves and each other up and have to pick up as many pieces as possible. I personally thought MDSZ had more realistic motivations and characters and the plot will stick with me for years, but I actually preferred reading TGCF. They are both epics in their own right with outstanding main leads.

I gave the series a 5 out of 5 because the characters, the plot, and the universe is different than other stories I have read. Just the fact that MXTX can consecutively craft works of art without reusing her old content deserves praise. I don't even read yaoi or BL or shounen ai, yet this couple has already topped virtually any couple I have ever liked. When reading TGCF, the romance is part of the story. It feels natural and it grows on you. It's a fantastic read, and when the donghua comes out I will eat it up.

(Most of this review is just words I need to put out there. There's no real point just thoughts!) <<less

As a fan of all MXTX's works, this one is my personal favorite. Yes, Wangxian is a masterpiece of a couple, however, something about the dynamic of Xielian and Huacheng - takes dedication, loyalty, PATIENCE and just LOVE to a (literally) godly level. Like 800 years of pinings worth.

Xielian's backstory successfully shredded my heart - It completely overthrows his initial image of being a completely naive, soft, marshmallow boi. If you are hesitant because of the fanon impression of Xielian being the "needs protection from ML babey", do not be... more>> deceived! He can and literally will kill, underneath all the FLUFF he is one of the, if not the deadliest character in the book. This is for someone who said they didn't have the motivation to read about a "too soft" protag.

So please do not hesitate this is a must read! <<less

Jumped right into TGCF right after MDZS, and I wasn't dissapointed!

As always, MXTX has a way of creating characters with rich backstory and complicated relationships. The utter love and devotion from the ML towards the MC is overwhelming, but you too will feel the same after you know about their past. Their story went for over 800 years through three worlds that is slowly unraveled as you dive into the books.

I really do like HuaCheng as the ML as he is very attentive, but not at all restricting towards the... more>> MC. He respects XieLian (MC) so much that I kept squealing at night lol. They also did not blindly fall in love with each other, but instead the relationship grows overtime. HuaCheng's personality is one of the most enjoyable thing in the book. It's a right balance of playful, charming, and protectiveness in one package. XieLian is also an undeniably 'nice' character, but there is so much more depth to him. He's not just a nice guy for the sake of being nice. He has a lot of emotions and principles he held dearly and you can actually see his character getting angry, emotional, happy, etc.

As MXTX herself had said, she combined the story plot with mundane, day-to-day things that you will get the sense that the MC literally has a place to call 'home' that he comes back to.

The books are quite plot-heavy, with so many relationships to keep track of. But as always, MXTX always connect these relationships in the end and make you go, "SO THAT'S WHY!!"

The side characters are well though of and developed very well through their respective arcs.

I have to say that I somehow enjoyed this more than MDZS, purely because they have very different mood to it. In the way I see it, MDZS is tragic and very heavy with guilt, politics, and all that. Not that it's not enjoyable, but I think I enjoy the pacing of TGCF a bit more. Don't be fooled by the peace and quiet, though, because this book also has extensive past and politics and other rule of the universe as well as angst!

Some minor cons to this book might be the fact that some of the subplots doesn't feel quite finished. The plot moves forward with the MC, but then you wonder a bit of "Wait. What happened to X?" Also, there are tons of flashbacks in the story. Not really a problem since we're working our way 'backward', but sometimes it can be frustrating.

Here's to hoping TGCF got adapted into drama series! <<less

I decided to read this after I read MDZS. This story is more complicated than MDZS and I love it. It’s amazing how MXTX manages to potray true and loyal love without much skinship and intimate scenes. Her stories doesn’t revolve around the fact that it’s BL rather it focuses on how deep love goes and really, It's so fascinatin. There’s not only romance but so much more. MXTX skillfully represents our society (in MDZS), and in HOB, It's kinda politics among powerful beings, also the truth and ways of... more>> human nature. All the characters are good. And Hua Cheng, my boi! Such a patient man, literally waited for 800 years. This kind of deep and beautiful love only exists in stories. Xie Lian... when I was reading book 4, I wish I could jump into the book and save him. Even after going through so many thing, he still remains a pure hearte, humble and kind boy. Now that I finished this novel, im getting the same empty feeling I got when I finished watching The Untamed. MXTX is definitely one of my most fav authors. <<less

Very general opinion of the book without spoilers.

So the plot of this novel wasn't supreme, and I felt that the side characters and their stories were tied together somewhat forcefully in order to highlight the blooming relationship of the pair; but these flaws also wove together this hectic, enduring and beautifully visualised love story and I was shaken to the core at the very end.

For me to describe MXTX, she's very much a word painter, invoking vivid images that are sometimes sublime, sometimes haunting but all beautiful. The key scenes... more>> she painted are multi-dimensional and it felt that I was very much pulled in to see, hear, smell and feel the emotions of the characters which to be honest was rather tough on my mentality. And of course, a major trait of her novels is that there's a fair bit of how do I say, macabre in it and especially in TGCF she explored the limits of human morality through different perspectives; ghosts, humans and gods, which to me was pretty interesting (but then I am one of those with an affinity of macabre but it's definitely not for everyone).

So her key scenes are pretty impactful (the author also said she wrote the book for this one key scene to begin with) but the weak link was the stories that led to those key scenes. The characters and their stories that revolved around the main pair was a bit too shallow and a bit too cliche, but they weren't terrible and added comedy relief in between painful and emotionally draining moments from the story of the MC and ML's budding relationship. Even the villain's motive is a bit weak and it seems as if he's simply there as a catalyst to paint her hauntingly beautiful imagery and a barricade to strengthen the enduring love of the MCs, but nonetheless some key scenes he was in was indeed marvellous so everything aside I'm not too mad.

The start definitely wasn't the best and it nearly turned me away, and in the middle where it talks about the MC's past was definitely a frustrating read due to the emotions evoked by the happenings and character. But I also felt that every chapter ends like door slightly ajar tantalising me to peer into, enticing me to wrench it open and run through that corridor. Then once I made it to the end of the corridor, I just had to wrench open the next door and run right on through especially towards the end of the book. That was legit exhausting because it made me marathon the whole thing. (=-=) So you might want to read it in the weekend on a Friday night or something if you're the type that finds it hard to drop the book at a cliff hanger.

All in all, the plot and character development wasn't the best, but it compelled me emotionally nonetheless. It's just a straight forward and honest love story between two very pure characters that arduously endured 800 years and it was an endearing journey. If you want a through on through love story then I would highly recommend this.

(Also, the visuals it wove in my head was 10/10 and to me just that aspect was worth the read). <<less

Definitely give this novel a try!

What can I say? I absolutely loved it--the story is extremely well thought out and is logical with few (if any) significant plot holes. Quite solid. The story is about the biterness of the world and despicable human nature, about heartrending devotion and unconditional love. There's a happy ending (but not before several helpings of angst).

While the beginning does start off fairly slow and can be a bit confusing, afterwards, it starts to pick up. I found myself getting attached to various characters, both main... more>> and side. For the most part, all relevant characters were likeable to me. They felt like real people with their own story and shortcomings, yet they were not without lovable moments, either.

The main couple are complex, have great chemistry, and intelligent; although they are not without their own flaws, they balance each other out and are a pleasure to read about. They are very sweet, in contrast to both their respective (tragic) pasts. I loved their interactions with one another as well--sometimes they were hilarious and amusing, other times, they were incredibly bittersweet. On more than one occasion, my heart clenched for these two. They are one of my favorite couples out there.

I would definitely recommend this novel to those who would enjoy reading a complex and sweet story. <<less

The author has mentioned this countless times, TGCF is not going to be another MDZS, so as readers I think we should keep that in mind.

In saying that, this is no less a beautiful story with characters that you would want to keep reading about even after the story is finished.

If there is one thing I would need to warn readers about (in addition to the warning right at the start of this review), is that the first few flashbacks in this series can be painful and boring to read.... more>> Unlike the MDZS flashback, you're given a little bit more at the start of TGCF on the MC's timeline. As such, you know the first few flashbacks are not going to end well for the MC (not a spoiler, this is given to us in the few few paragraphs).

Reading all the misery that the MC had to go through, and knowing that there is still more to come and that it hasn't reached it's worse, can be very demoralising. I admit to pushing myself to get through this bit.

Luckily, we're not reading this as a real-time serial, and the whole thing has been completely translated, so there's no need to stew in frustration while we wait for new chapters to come out!

The later flashbacks are much better written
Spoiler

the lantern festival and later the hundred sword thrusts... anyone? (Don't get me wrong, I wanted to howl and throw things when reading about those people stabbing at our MC, but that just helps us understand what our little HuaHua ghost fire was feeling - and him turning from ghost fire to humanoid ghost No Name...)

[collapse]
, especially since you have less idea on what's going to happen and they do flesh out the characters a lot more.

Some readers might not like this, but these characters have been around for 800 years - in other words, during the non-flashback periods, they can seem OP or seem very calm no matter what's thrown at them. But I feel this makes sense considering the experience they have. What would have annoyed me was if (like a lot of badly written YA novels) you have a supposedly "old/immortal" character acting like a teen!

And if you want the characters to be less OP or suffer a little more, there are always those flashback chapters! In a way, the "current timeline" chapters are like a breath of fresh air for all the heavier flashback chapters.

I'm not saying that this story doesn't have flaws: sometimes the current timeline can see a little too cartoony
Spoiler

Weaponised bad cooking and the flustered "we're just borrowing spiritual powers" exclamations to bystanders... really?

[collapse]
But I think overall this is still a beautiful story that does what MXTX wanted it to: to tell a love story between a god and his believer.

I've binged through all these chapters very quickly (and I'd jumped on this novel immediately after inhaling the MDZS novel, the 50 episodes of The Untamed, and the Scum Villian novel), so now I'm going to go lie down somewhere to stew in all the emotions... 。・°°・ (>_<) ・°°・。 <<less

Honestly this novel hurt me to my core while I was reading it. But it was amazing.

Xie Lian (MC) (our Dianxia) is the most bby of bbys and he needs to be protected. My heart hurt so much that I had to skip some of the scenes in books 2 and 4 because I just felt so sad for him. Dianxia did not deserve any of that suffering and omigosh I swear I was crying.

San Lang (ML) is the cutest ML I swear. He's totally different from both MLs... more>> in SVSSS and MDZS, but he cares for Dianxia in the same way the others do for their love interests. He waited 800 YEARS and omigosh my heart hurt so much for him too.

There is a lot of hurt in this story, and unless you like that angst and the MC going through everything horrible that could possibly happen, it's gonna hurt a lot for you. But, you should still read this because this is a masterpiece.

The only thing was that there was no snu snu hehe... even though there were hints and yanno... pointing towards it, but there weren't any legit scenes so I guess this is family friendly???

Anyway, read it. <<less

I started reading this right after Mdzs and I somehow couldn't get into this, I stopped after few chapters. But then.. Oh man. I came back after few months, started reading from chapter one again and was like how the hell I didn't like this? I thought nothing could be better than Mdzs, but I was wrong.
