This story has a very tragic ending, in which a madman destroys the family of the protagonist and kidnaps him, imprisoning him.
Unfortunately, the first victim to be killed is me!!! A character who goes to save her kidnapped brother and dies a terrible death.
Now, I need to think about this carefully. How can I, my brother and my family be safe? First, get my brother out of the public eye.
Therefore, I carefully hid my younger brother and decided to go out in public.
But that’s not all.
“Haven’t seen you for a long time, Kayla.”
“!..”
“Now, should I take a fee for what you did to my eye?”
Now the madman’s target was me, not my little brother. All my 5 years of hard work have gone in vain.

It's entertaining that he doesn't even try and he's so much better at using the shield. Versus Kayla, who tries really hard, but fails even harder. Ahaha.
This novel is actually really good, I think many people are misunderstanding the story without reading the full novel and just yesterday I read it all.
There should be a tragedy tag, I cried so much about the female leads back story. In the previous life her parents were the owners of a kendo dojo before they died in an accident, she sold it and got a job as the sole guardian of her younger brother. Stressed with work she ends up ignoring her brother who is being severely bullied and commits su*cide, in response she goes after the people who bullied her brother and kills them with a training sword before being shot dead with a gun.
I know full well that the Male lead Astair is not a good person because he tortures and kills people, however in the novel he didn’t do that to Franz because he liked him. On the contrary he hated him and was jealous over the fact that everyone was looking for him and he felt upset because if he died or disappeared because no one knows who he is no one would care. Astair has a really shitty and tragic life story, so I think the author made him so OP to counter that. Astair Liche is the grandson of the Duke Liche and the illegitimate son of the Emperor with the dukes deceased daughter who was his mistress. Because of his special identity as the only survivor of the Spirit Kingdom, made up of powerful elementalist mages and being cursed by the Empress a sorceress should he be a Male by his coming of age ceremony he will die. Astair lives in isolation between the duchy of Liche and count Aizar, cross dressing as a woman.
Astair actually falls in love with Kyla at first sight, in contrast to Kyla who gets kidnapped by him she never blames him and at first starts to treat him as a lonely child and a sibling. She is amazed by his magic abilities and comes to want his happiness as much as Franzs. When she is kidnapped she has dreams: 1) where Astair tortures Franz in the dungeons. 2) Where Og Kyla and Astair meet for the first time (actually Astair made Rittaus and Franz believe that he killed Kyla, in fact he manipulates her into making him stay with her and keeps her in his room and puts an invisibility spell on her so that no one except him can see her. This part was in the side story, so if you didn’t read the whole thing how would you know?) 3) She has a dream about a bloodied pink haired woman who tells her to let Astair go otherwise he can’t go and do what he needs to. The pink haired woman alludes to the many deceased of the Spirit Kingdom that surround Astair as ghosts urging him on, making his mind more mu*derous in the hope that he’d destroy the Erbach empire which destroyed them.
Astair can communicate with the spirits who can read kylas thoughts to a certain degree, that’s why he starts to like her who knows who he is without having met. Eventually she tells him partially that this world is a novel (actually it’s a webtoon) and he asks her about her previous life and her brother that committed su*cide. However, Astair is able to figure out alone with regard to what Kyla has done so far that her brother is main character and he is the villain.
What makes Astair the Male lead in my eyes is that he helps her face her previous life, even though the reason was because of a bet to prevent her from leaving him. Astair has powerful magic and is able to go into the past even in another world for one minute, with schuette he says that if she can break the dimensional wall she’ll be able to speak to her brother and he’ll let her go free. She eventually comes to rely on him and when he kisses her, she never disagrees to it.
Astair kisses Kyla and tells her that she was the only one who recognised him for who he is. It was a consenting kiss but Kyla pushes him away because of her last dream. They fight and Astair falls on top of her, he tells her he can do anything to get her to stay. She apologises that the reason why he’s not growing is because of her and that he has always wanted to go outside. But then he cries and begs her, Kyla Managing to push him away she stabs him in his eye with an envelope knife and leaves.
I don't know if they will have any character development (mostly the FL) I mean- how does one know that the ML tried to r*pe and confine his brother in the OG and not feel any disdain or utter disgust?
I didn't find myself getting particularly attached or invested to any character throughout the series for some reason, but it was still a fun and decently entertaining read. ML:
As previous reviewers have said, Astair straight up has just lost his marbles. Or rather, he never had any to begin with. He's a loose cannon who can and will do messed up things. His motivation changes throughout the series from himself/his own satisfaction, to Kayla. She's truly the only thing holding him together at this point LOL. Rather than saying love changes him, love makes him act in line with what Kayla wants and hiding some of his actions from her. In the end he deliberately draws assassins to himself so he can let off steam on them lol.
She's an interesting, strong FL. I liked that she had a clear goal of protecting her family only and made sacrifices toward that (even though she ended up giving in and siding with Astair). She has her trauma and I think the series portrayal of it is more than what we see in other series (at least it's addressed lol). Glad that she could finally let go of her past, even though it was only possible due to Astair being extremely overpowered. But hey, at least she addressed and got over her trauma, right?
NGL her development with ML didn't really draw me in. She just started with sympathy which turned into attachment and then somehow they kissed? Maybe it was just me missing the nuance. Anyway, you already know from the summary that they'll end up together so it was just whatever for me.
The last we see of them is their wedding (cute I guess) and Kayla assumes position of Empress and basically does all the political stuff because Astair is... you know.
Side stories focus on other characters like her academy friends. Nicholas (bully guy who fell in love with her) falls for her friend Iris when she smacks him with a pot. Her other friend (who I totally forgot the name of) falls for Astair's older brother who's like.... 40. I was a bit nervous about it but their side story ends with him rejecting her and her first love ending.
Basically before the main story ended, there was a bit where they elaborated on the world that Kayla fell in. TLDR it was originally supposed to be a rofan with Kayla and Astair as the protags, but the author fell ill and her sister (who was illustrating it) went out on her own and changed it into a tragic BL starring Franz.
We know that Astair tells Franz that he killed Kayla and ended up imprisoning him in the dungeon forever.
However the final side story shows what really happened in that BL!timeline. Astair is torturing Franz and looking for someone through him but he doesn't know what. Kayla breaks in to save her brother, and ends up being trapped by Astair in the mansion (much like she does in the main story). A bunch of stuff that happens in the main story also happens in the BL timeline, drawing them closer and implying that they are still fated for each other. Franz escapes but he's determined to find him to hold him hostage as leverage against Kayla. The side story ends with Astair holding Kayla tight, as he'll never let her go.
I feel like the author wanted to "tie up loose ends" and show they were always fated to be together, whether in a good way (main story) or a bad way (BL timeline). Putting this side story last just really killed the vibe for me though.
