This..... is a honey trap.
The start, or prologue, is great. And then he leaves the tower.
What started as such a strong and unyielding MC became mired with endless philosophical crap that will make your head hurt from how hard you try to wrap your mind around it. It felt like a lecture you were tricked into going to, where you barely get the topic even after really trying to. There is no structure, hell, its all about tearing down the system, with a bit too much hitting close to home since it hints that real life is sort of a system, especially near the end.
We, or at least I, read stories to be entertained, to escape reality, not for a large psychological debate to be shoved in your face. I didn't start reading this for that, and now that I'm done all I want is to physically throw this in the bin and set fire to it.
I really don't like the ending too, but I don't think this could have ended any other way. It wasn't open ended, he killed the system and everyone died slowly of old age with him never seeing them again. Horrible ending for such a great MC.
There's a manga based on this, but I'm betting that it will get dropped since the plot is too complicated, and the artist probably got tricked by the awesome prologue like I did.
I've read about half of Omniscient Readers Viewpoint, and this reminded me of why I dropped that. Its clearly from the same author, although that pushes less issues at you, but its similar in that it lacks any kind of structure. Both this and that are cleverly written, but are trying to be too clever. The hidden messages are too loud, too in your face, coupled with a confusing plot and bad ending. The author sacrifices plot for their 'message' or 'debate', and it's not one I care for.
The story mainly focuses on the MC but does have some important side characters that get there “time to shine” so to speak. Im not sure how I feel about the ending, it’s sad and a little confusing but overall this novel makes for a great read. All in all if your looking for an exciting fantasy adventure this is a good place to start.
This is a very thematic novel. From the beginning until the end, it consistently discusses hope, the past, desire, and the good and bad influences they may have on people of different status. The story is very slow in revealing vital information though, as an example, the main character is not as overpowered as he appears in the start, and is in fact still confined to a part of the albeit very elaborate power systems present in the story. The characters themselves are also representative of their class, tying in with the idea of hope, as the weaker ones are typically in despair, whilst the strong are overconfident. The main character stands out not through his power but through his different outlook on life, which in turn grants him his power. As the story progresses, the power ups get less to do with training, and more about inner contemplation and philosophies, which I find unique and pretty cool. Unlike what others may have said, I found the ending as a nice tie in to the rest of the story, concluding and showcasing the development of the themes mentioned above in a short arc, as well as continuing the symbol of the ouroborus, the cyclic nature of everything, as with, in my interpretation, the destruction of the tree comes the birth of a new tree from the ashes. The story also carries the traditional narrativise of the protagonist's rebellion against the norm, illustrated by Jaehwan, the man with a childlike soul going against the all controlling Big brother and the final denial of conformity before the last arc.
amateurwriter myself, every time I read any of this author’s creative masterpieces, I always find myself having mixed feelings after reaching the ending. Should I be happy that in his stories, the art of writing has transcended into an entirely divine kind of creation? Or should I be sad that in each of the author’s stories, there is a persistent thing called ‘reality’ that slams back at readers in each ending of the story? The... more>>I don't like the ending. At least let MC who has suffered from loneliness live life with friends who believe and fight with him. Why do they have to spend life without being able to meet at the end. This is really not a happy ending. MC even suffers in the world after "returning" with all thoughts about his "world"
