It’s not too long or too short, and I didn’t get bored while reading it. If age gaps are a problem for you, you might not enjoy this so much since that’s a big theme of this novel. Personally, I’m really strict with the CP age gap (14 yr old genius doctor girl paired with 1000+ yr old ML, anyone? Yeah. Not something I find appealing.) but this age gap wasn’t too bad, and both MC and ML were legal, consenting adults.

Something that I was a little wary of was MC’s depression. At first, I was afraid it would turn into an excuse for the ML to find out MC’s ~woes~ and “fix” him, but oh boy was I wrong. Honestly, I really appreciated how MC’s depression was portrayed in this novel. It wasn’t mentioned every other sentence, or even every other chapter, but it was a small, dimly lit flame in the background. I can’t say what it would be like reading this novel from the perspective of someone who’s never experienced depression themselves, but from my perspective, it’s portrayed extremely well. MC doesn’t “lament” over his situation like he’s seeking validation or pity, nor does he say s*upid sh*t like “that’s probably just the depression talking.” Like ??? No one says that unironically, and if they do, they’re a middle schooler.

The author did a really lovely job showing the “greyness” of his life, and how it gradually began to bloom into color. The author never wrote him explicitly thinking about how sad he was. Both the author and translator really nailed the whole “show not tell” thing here, which made MC more human and relatable than if his depression was treated as a character setting.

Speaking of which, MC is so relatable. It might just be me, but his thought processes, fears, and apathy resonated so much with me. It’s like I saw myself come alive in another character. Some people might say he’s a boring or inconsistent character, but I think his personality is actually really well defined. I related SO much with his tendency to be over-polite and strict on boundaries. I would reread this novel just to see myself in him again (sounds kinda narcissistic now that I typed that out).

I do kind of feel that MC and ML’s progression into a romantic relationship was a little sudden, but then again, that’s also life. People don’t usually get warning signs for when they fall in love, so I don’t mind the abruptness to much.

About the world building, there’s a fair amount of inconsistency, but it’s supernatural after all. It doesn’t bother me. Unless you’re a stickler for consistency, you probably won’t be bothered much either.

In conclusion, I liked it. It was satisfying, a good length, and pretty darn realistic with casual and everyday depression. I’m just happy MC wasn’t shown crying himself into a ball in the corner at every possible moment to show his sadness. I’m even happier that MC kept in contact with his doctor?? So responsible? He put in effort to get better and wasn’t “healed” by being snuggled up in ML’s arms (although the human connection most definitely did help).

One more thing that I forgot to mention earlier! Listen closely: ML is vinegary. He’s possessive and even compares himself to a beast. However! He fully supports and stresses the importance of MC making friends and meeting new people. This ML, no matter how overbearing he may seem, seems to understand what makes a healthy relationship, so I’m happy :). Ngl, ML was kind of a shitty person in the beginning, but he gets better. It’s all about that character development, you know? ~~~ <<less
