“We’ll be entering a contract marriage?”

Melissa, an omega and an illegitimate child of the Rosewood County.

Her only family and the only one who was ever on her side—her mother—had passed away.

“…This is not the Count’s funeral hall.”

“I couldn’t be certain because your pheromones were too light, but it’s true. You’re an omega.”

At that point in her life, Melissa was about to become the wife of an old marquis. It was a sacrifice she had to make for the sake of her family.

However, Ian appeared in front of her and gave one final choice that she could make.

“The contract’s main stipulation is very simple. Give birth to an alpha who will become the household’s successor.”

The contract marriage that began as such was like a sweet, sweet melody.

Knowing that one’s life was about to be devoured, but nonetheless addicted to that sweetness—unable to escape.

It’s early on into the story so hopefully my rating will rise as it progresses.

However...

I’m usually a fan of the “mean ML” troupe because I enjoy angst and find redemption/regret arcs really interesting but Ian is just extremely irritating and lacks consistency. In a mere 13 chapters he’s done practically nothing yet still somehow earned my resentment, it’s almost impressive. I love a cold ML but he has zero appeal to me. His implied feelings for the side character who’s such a bratty and entitled woman are so strange to... more>> me and seem very out of character for someone who seems to hold even a slight bit of empathy. Don’t even get me started on how he did such a shameful thing to our FL at her mothers funeral!? He’s just so boring and the fact that he has feelings for such an annoying woman that bullied an innocent child yet somehow simultaneously looks down on our FL is so mind boggling to me. <<less

It starts off well, but does not hold up in the end. The author is inconsistent.

This novel has two parts to it. The author gives you a good sense of what the characters are like, their personalities, thoughts, feelings, motivations, strengths and weaknesses, etc. However in the second half, rather than having these characters go through real growth, the author just creates two brand new characters. The main leads in part two are nothing like themselves from part one. Only their names are the same. It's a trainwreck of writing.... more>> The reasons I had for liking the characters in the first place are all gone because they're unrecognizable.

Do not recommend for those who like logic, common sense, and healthy parenting.

Do recommend for those who enjoy angst, woman empowerment, and making men suffer. <<less

If obsessive-possessive Yandere ML isn't to your taste, or if you are squeamish concerning matters of consent, I advise you to avoid this story.

With that out of the way, I actually enjoyed this novel. I came here looking specifically for a "ML realizes he messed up and then suffers and grovels" story, and I was not disappointed. I'm seeing that other reviews are wildly either high or low, and I think a lot of that stems from just how far the ML messes things up before we get anywhere close... more>> to the part where the power dynamic reverses and FL is in control.

If this story did not have the ABO element, and if the author didn't take the time to set up the world building and show us the accepted social systems, this might read as a horror novel in the first half. But because of those things being well established, even though I see the ML's behavior as gross from my real life pov, I can understand why the FL is allowing any of it to happen.

Also, I disagree with the people who think the ML didn't suffer enough. The only difference between their suffering would be the way society overalls treats them different (not the ML's fault), and how long she has to put up with her suffering. I'd even argue that the fact that he suffers while bearing responsibility for an entire estate and his son, meaning he can't even just give up and run away from everything, balances their suffering more.

I personally found the novel to be decent enough. The conflicts and their resolutions are well within the range the story sets, and there's no "chosen one" nonsense that so many novels lately have been veering off into. It's the story of a messed up Alpha and a messed up Omega, and how they messed each other up a little more before falling in love and finding peace together. <<less

Interesting take on abo verse, really liked how their thoughts, feelings, and instincts conflict and the contradictory emotions and concerns felt very human to me. I also really liked that it felt like there was conscious thought was put into how abo dynamics would work societally.

Other than that, it's a fairly typical poor exploited girl forced into a contract marriage with a cold obsessive man, just with uncontrollable instincts there to mess things up more along with the typical misunderstandings and lack of communication.

Tbh I'm pretty nervous, as while they're... more>> currently at a upward slope, the prologue shows that at some point everything is going to come crashing down, and I can only take so much angst before I tap out. At this point, there's not enough out for me to know how long it'll drag out, or even if it'll have a happy conclusion, so I'll come back when there's more out or someone spoils the ending for me

Oh yeah, the smut was pretty good <<less

Having read the whole story I would like to review this novel in case someone dives into this novel without knowing what they are getting into. I would be very glad if any reader finds this helpful.

I think there are two parts in this novel. First, before she runs away & second, the story after she runs away.

1. The first is blood boiling, filled with angst & a plain ML with zero appeal. My thoughts on the ML are the same as @yuriben, mentioned in one of the reviews. He... more>> is INSUFFERABLE. If you enjoy this type of ML then you are get to go but if not, then I would recommend just skimming through the parts till you reach the peak wherein she's asked to leave. If you read it with sincerity & depth, I can say you'll find his regret lacking.

The only reason I would not read this again is because of the ML. In my opinion he didn't grovel enough for his actions. I calmed myself down by thinking that it's his character & that's just how the author made him to be.

2. The second part is likeable. I enjoyed the ML's little suffering & FL being cold to him. Also, the only part of the story I like is in this part & that is their children.

Apart from this, the story is ok-ish & a little bit interesting for sure. Overall, this is a good read for pure angst lovers. You would want to complete this in one go, so please wait till the translations are completed. <<less

The story is really well written. The subject of the story is not simply a romance but a dive into psychology. Although at times the MC is frustrating in her cowardice and blindness to how lucky she is compared to others, it really remind me of ptsd after living her whole life in extreme anxiety and stress (not to mention the attempts on her life, all sprinkled with motherhood).

In short, I can't say I loved it from beginning to end, but it's good enough for me to hang on until... more>> the last chapter, knowing full well how it was going to end. <<less

I like this novel; liking the angst. Not giving my rate first but the first 4 chapters development and the melancholic narration are very satisfying to me. Thanks translatornim for choosing this Knovel. When is the next update?
