Refusing Your Ex-Husband’s Obsession: A Guide

I sacrificed my own life to save my husband, who was my first love.
I thought I could finally be free from this foolish love after I’ve died, but…

Why is it that when I opened my eyes again, I found myself in someone else’s body?
Even worse, I transmigrated into a novel?

And why is my ex-husband here, too?

He became the S-Class Esper who was obsessed with the female lead—enough that he would eventually commit treason against the Crown Prince, who was the true male lead.
More than anything else though, why did I suddenly manifest the abilities of a Guide?

…Ah, whatever. I died anyway, so that should be the same as a divorce, I guess.

* * *

“My wife, did you think that I wouldn’t recognize your guiding?”

Why do you remember me.
Why are you looking at me like that, not the female lead? With those eyes so full of obsession and madness.
You weren’t originally this kind of man.

He approached me at a languid pace, watching closely as I was at a loss for words.
His saunter was slow and elegant, as though he was a lion approaching his prey—even so, he could not hide his thirst and hunger. No, it’s not as if he was even trying to hide it.

As he finally arrived in front of me, he raised one hand and held my chin. With his thumb, unceremoniously, he rubbed my lower lip.
At the familiar action, I felt myself shudder. He had always been rather rough whenever he received my guiding.
His delighted expression was slightly distorted.

“Ha…”

The moment his skin touched mine—the moment I started guiding him—he let out a deep, drawn-out sigh. His hot, thick breath clung to my eyes and lips.

I felt a warm hand touch my back, and he soon pulled me close to him forcefully. With my body pressed entirely against his, I couldn’t hide my surprise as I glanced up at him.
Then, when he opened his previously closed lids, his blue eyes looked at me as though he’d been waiting.

With his lips so close to the tip of my nose, he turned his head obliquely as he crooned.

“I’ve been looking for you for such a long time, Honey.”

I Don't understand why the FL fall in love to the ML until death, is he save you? Is he your benefactor? Is it because the face? And in the FL second life too.

In FL Second life, ML not try to apologize, not have a bit of respect, arrogant man, threatening the FL, The ML not care a bit of your own childhood friends, use your own brother for use.

Someone was curious why people is giving this novel one star. Then as someone who gave one star myself, let me explain it to you.

The reason of my dislike towards this novel is simply because of the fl. I mean, she fell in love with his husband just because he was handsome. She was hungry for love but she still fell for a person who didn't show an ounce of love. She simply loved him because he looked good, was tall and strong.

What a joke! Does the author means that... more>> ugly people aren't worthy of love? Then go wash your morality a little bit. If the author showed that the ML at least showed the little bit of respect towards the fl, I would have understand her. But I'm just a normal person and don't know how the mind of masochist works.

I simply can't understand why all the ktl novels with angst are like this. I sometimes feel that they are deliberately disrespecting women by writing this kind of stuff. I just hope they stop writing plots like this.

Anyway, the FL is just a face lover. I can't understand why she didn't fall for other pretty people. Maybe because the author wanted not to? Yeah, this must be it. <<less

" the ML didn't ask for forgiveness in a selfish way"

I can't help but laugh. Do they think wuthering heights is a fluffy romance too?

The ML neglected, allowed others to severely abuse the fl, and even caused her very grisly demise. What does he do the second he suspects she's alive again?

... more>> Tracks her down, uses his high status to force his way into her home, constantly pesters her, and manipulates her family despite the FL making it very clear she wants nothing to do with him.

Basic stalker shit.

But of course he wears her down and makes great use of the fact she is forced to be his guide in order to save his life.

I'm honestly suprised the writer gave her a back bone to refuse him & want to stay with her kind new family in the beginning.

Sigh... yet it's never allowed to stay that way. Women will forever be written to be the ultimate stars of self sacrifice to show their love. Accepting even the men who gave them miserable lives & deaths. <<less

OMG THIS NOVEL IS SO GOOD!!

the relationship between the MC and ML is fire; they sweet and caring about their relationship. The story is hard to grasp at first, but the author is so majestic in writing an original novel, not your typical revival. The MC at first has a hard time accepting ML again but he goes crazy, literally crazy to ask for her forgiveness (he doesn't do it in a selfish way or in a way that is harmful to her) at every step of his story he... more>> shows a love beyond comprehension for her, every gesture or look is directed at her. This does not mean that the world building is left out but rather the intrigue and characters around MC and ML help to deepen mc's and ml's personalities. I read this novel in a private site fully translated <<less

Who the heck is giving this 1 star already when the story is not fully fleshed out yet?!?! Give it 1 star if you managed to read half or complete the story not when its not even fully fleshed out. Like wtf.

Tbh, I really like the premise of the story presenting a Esper and Guide dynamic. Guys give it a chance and don't blindly leave a star when its only 7 (or probably 3.5) chapters out as translated. Camping to read for more. ⛺

I’m interested in where the author is going with this, because from where I left off it seems like the ML had been responsible for her (horribly bloody and gore-filled 😦😦) death. Apparently he had a ‘psychic rampage’ and basically melted her in his arms. He’s also (from the narration) completely f**king unhinged because of that so... Maybe the yandere-ness will be spicy because of that 🥴

((but I’m not too optimistic because MC seems very traumatized, and korean novels seldom allow female characters to have the sort of... more>> agency or dialogue where they’re able to call out their male counterparts for their mistreatment and ALSO get to walk off into the sunset free of (former!) ml’s issues 🤷🏻‍♀️)

BUT! But! The writing is very good! The translator also did an incredible job translating and also editing it so that I’m this invested into the story and the characters! Give this a chance, and if anything goes badly, write a spoiler infested review so that other people will know to avoid or to 👀 lock in... 🤭🤭🤭🤭 <<less

I'd rate this a 4.5 but I rounded up to counter others' low & very superficial ratings. Unlike plenty of other korean novels, misunderstandings aren't perpetuated ad nauseam, the characters feel 3 dimensional, and the plot lines aren't needlessly convoluted. The translation is high quality too.

Also, I'd like to post a slight background spoiler explaining why those low ratings regarding the FL's 'romantic choices' make no sense:

Spoiler

The FL was an orphan, had to struggle and work extra hard to overcome her disadvantaged start in life. Due to her courage, resolve, and overall strength of character, Seohyun manages to survive for over ten years in a special forces group made of normal people, in an esper/guide world with supernatural monsters. At an advanced age, Seohyun presents as a guide. An average guide. The government agency she works for tests her guide rating and also discovers that she is a 99% match for a S-rank esper (the ML, Ciel) The two are quickly paired up by the government as a work pair to fight monsters. Since Seohyun is only a B-rank guide, the government's decision pisses off a lot of high ranked guides who would have loved to work with an S-rank esper like the ML. The most pissed off however is the original FL, Seo-yoon, who starts trying to break these two apart.

After working together for a while, the ML proposes to the FL. She, who admires his looks, personal ability, and demeanor, and yearns for a family since she's never had one (orphan) is flattered that her handsome, powerful coworker wants to mary her so she accepts and becomes his wife. Slowly, her initial infatuation grows into love, but it is an unhealthy love because her and the ML's behavior & expectations don't match up. On the surface, the burden of feelings is placed only on Seohyun. The ML, who is also in love with Seohyun, doesn't want to admit his feelings because he is already feeling trapped by his circumstances in this new world (being used as a weapon by politicians and rich people, having almost been subjected to a forced brainwashing/imprinting by the Korean government that Seo-yoon and Seohyun are working for)

Meanwhile, the original FL, Seo-yoon, doesn't stop trying to drive a wedge between the two, maliciously working to lower Seohyun's self-esteem. At a low point in her life, when Ciel loses control of his esper powers, Seohyun decides to do her final duty as a guide and calm him down, even knowing her survival is unlikely.

When the ML wakes up from his rampage, he realizes his wife sacrificed herself for him, is unable to accept this, and the subsequent power surge rewinds time, only this time, Seohyun is in the body of one of the natives of his original world. This is where the story starts.

[collapse]

If this sort of detailed, well-written origin story can be dismissed as 'she fell for his looks and is therefore a dumb masochist' then I would really like to know what even counts as a good origin story. <<less

Don't hate the ML, give him a chance first because he's actually a big bear!

All the problems started from the communication and distrust.
Spoiler

In their first life the husband came from another dimension, so he didn't trust people there. Plus the provocation from the so-called 'Saintess' aka the high-level Guide there made him can't fully trust his wife, though eventually he did, but still can't express it.

[collapse]

The dynamics between ML and FL is so nice. In the early meetings ML's kinda pushy because he wanted to get FL to confess that she's his wife as he's already suspicious of her habits that very much resembled his wife's in KR. Later he could only kneel on his knees in front of her because he's a wife-fool LOL. FL's rather independent and doesn't want to repeat the same mistakes twice, so she communicates everything. She's got confidence in living this second life because she had her family. She doesn't yearn for his love anymore.

Each chapter of the novel is rather short, and there are only 120 episodes so the story progress rather quickly. The misunderstanding gets resolved soon but the trust and romance still take time. The world-building is okay, though I wish there'd be more in-depth stories about the Guides and Espers that were discovered later. The ending is kinda rushed.. But imho it's a nice, short and fulfilling read after I grew tired of reading the 200s-episode novels.

Pile of misunderstanding can be very lethals, this is the good example for that. I personally dislike such a novel, but the character is quite interesting while infuriating at the same time. Bunch of toxic people getting mixed together lol, welcome to the hellish relationship.

The translation also very nice.

I really love the style of writing and the plot device is new to me. I’m really looking forward to reading more and I wish there was more to read😭 but the FL seems kind and her thought process is more mature from what I’ve seen than other novels. I can’t wait for more

I don't understand the one star reviews. I really don't. Like what's the problem if women do prioritize looks for falling in love? It's not that an ugly person doesn't deserve love. It's just that most people have different priorities while falling in love. Some might prioritize looks, some money, some personality, some compatibility. And hence, women do not need to be pedestalized Or pressurized into thinking that them liking someone for looks is completely shallow. That doesn't make women / men anyone look bad, just makes them human with... more>> different needs and preferences in life like it should be. The only thing that is unacceptable is when someone insults you for not fitting into the category of your preferences and as far as my memories serve me correctly, FL did no such thing.

Spoiler

Secondly, our FL was an orphan and was brought up in harsh abusive conditions which made it clear she had no idea/understanding about true love and affection. How could such a person, with such a dysfunctional life, irrespective of her gender, act like a completely mature, old, wise human being? With no one to guide her in life? Does her being a woman alone, make her be in the pressure that she always has to make correct decisions as per the readers? Not to say maybe we're misinterpreting her intentions and she didn't solely fall in love with the ML because of his looks but because "he looked strong" I. E. Someone who could and would protect her in the world where she was being abused. Maybe because she got that security from her family in her second life, she didn't fall in love with ML as fast as she did in the past.

[collapse]

Lastly it's a esper/guide story. Most of these stories are toxic and made for people who like groveling, obsessive mls to an extent. I would say, the novel pace is fast enough which is refreshing, because other Korean novels tend to stretch out the misunderstandings over a very long period of time.

Spoiler

The ML is definitely toxic in the way he doesn't communicate. But at the same time, ge was forced to do so in the other world, because otherwise his Korean superiors especially Seo Yoon would have used his weakness, the FL, to make him do things. Both of them were definitely not in their right mind in the past, ML being stuck in a completely different world, betrayed with no way to go back and FL with a dysfunctional life. So in my personal opinion I do not blame them.

[collapse]

My point is if esper/guide relationships or story plots seem toxic to you definitely drop it. But many of us like it here (there are many 5 star reviews too). We definitely wouldn't allow such toxicity in our lives and we know that. But that's the entire point! This is a work of fiction and definitely not reality! And it's supposed to serve us as an escape to the real life! But still if any one feels triggered I can very well understand that pov, with all due respect. <<less

I finally figured out what drives me crazy about this novel: the incongruous of the female lead.

like the top reviewer said, she fell for her husband because he was StRoNg and HaNdSoMe.

but that doesn’t make sense

Spoiler

She has an orphan background but is a former military special squad/elite member

[collapse]

and I also don’t get why she is so against her husband

Spoiler

From the limited backstory that we have, he is, at most, harsh with his words. He never cheated or abused her-they just lacked communication

I understand that there was another guide trying to get between the two of them but nothing has indicated he went with her. Yet this moronic female lead, accepts a book from this rival, who she should have at least disliked

[collapse]

Her husband

Spoiler

is an original occupant of the empire that she transmigrated to. He has also regressed back to when the saint first appeared. He was also tricked into going to the FL’s original world (by the saint who originally came from there) and is desperately trying to get back. He loses control of his mind and abilities because the saint said oopsies, I cant send you back.

his perspective of his wife doesn’t make sense. It’s too positive

He says that she will ignore those she hates and will give everything to those she cares about. But like previously mentioned, she had no immunity against her love rival, the saint, for her husband and takes the saints actions over her husband’s.

[collapse]

the female lead is also a hypocrite

Spoiler

Early on when she and her family go to the palace to celebrate her debut, she repeatedly states that they are staying at a run down hotel for commoners. I’m fine with this level of disregard except she talks about how close her family is with their people and how much her family cares for them. But they stayed in a “run down inn for commoners” which pissed me off to no end. F*ck you and your frugal nature if you somehow now think of yourself as better than everyone but still want to be considered a saint

[collapse]

her husband is pretty much the reason why I’m sticking around and I wish he’d find someone else because she sure isn’t deserving of him. <<less

I do understand the annonce towards her reason why she loved him but honestly the one star bc of that is a little unnecessary imo. I am, nonetheless, not a critical reader so I enjoy a lot of novels. Why I like the novel until now is because I love the relationship FL has with her new family. I adore such stories tbh, also I like the way of writing very much. I think this is actually the only thing I need to stay reading a book or a novel.... more>> And afterwards if the story is actually tr*sh ill stop. But it was very easy to read and sometimes even emotional so I liked it. I didn't even realised I've had read 20+ in one sitting xD <<less

This is just a, I guess you could say defense of the book against the people complaining about a tr*shy romance novel.

I think what some people forget about books like these is that there are many meanings for love, the Greek launguage has many.

Eros: romantic, passionate love.

... more>> Philia: intimate, authentic friendship.

Erotoropia or ludus: playful, flirtatious love.

Storge: unconditional, familial love.

Philautia: compassionate self-love.

Pragma: committed, companionate love.

Agápe: empathetic, universal love.

Our FL can fall under Eros, all the forms of love listed above are genuine forms of love. Not all love is based on a rational, heathy relationship, or personally.

And news flash, a lot of books are like this, the relationship starts with physical attraction (and in some books with good writing,) grow in healthy relationships based on the person themselves.

No the author is not saying "ugly people can't find love" which is very rude (no one is ugly, ones turn of may be another's type) It's just that's how these books are, it's two hot people being hot, if you don't like it, then don't read it. <<less

It does seem like there's a lot of potential for the FL to be a badass, so I'm giving it 4 stars for that. A star off because the ML sucks. Who cares if he was traumatized, he treated his wife and brother like they didn't exist. It still is an interesting read so far.

Honestly, it wasn't that bad. I thought that it will be meh since the ML neglected (not actually, he can't just express it openly for some reason) the FL at first but he had reasons for doing that and I know that it isn't still reasonable to treat her like sh*t when in the first place the ML was the one who proposed to her at the first life. Don't worry, he will regret but not enough groveling ig? Moreover, ML had a huge development that I actually didn't expect... more>> since in the beginning chapters he was nonchlant and cold but yeah he tried his best to apologize and make up with the FL. The plot was okay, kinda unique yet typical rofan novel.

In the first life, FL didn't love the ML just because of his "face, " well maybe it's one of the reason, but in my opinion since FL only had the ML that time (bc she have no one else) so she got attached to him and her feelings grew more every time when they do the esper-guide thingy when they need to be at close proximity. She yearns for someone to love her and at that time she only saw Ciel. And the ML actually kinda cared for her in their first life, though without her knowledge and in times when she wasn't conscious enough to know, and the reason why ML is holding back is because of some circumstances, it's kinda complicated to explain the situation so I might just suggest you to read this one. <<less

A story about second chances at happiness, learning to love, and trusting those who you respect and care for. I agree there was a lack of communication on the ML side which resulted in an unhappy marriage in the first life. However, it is strange the MC never made an effort to ask about the ML's life. I think that was a flaw the author forgot about so I can't say MC tried everything to help ML to trust her. Otherwise, he was a dense jerk. No, he never physically... more>> hurt, verbally abused, or consciously abandoned her. He was just indifferent to her feelings and had trust issues. This would cause misunderstandings and feelings of loneliness in what was supposed to be a highly matched marriage.
Spoiler

Fake Saint had kidnapped him and government tried to control him. He didn't want her to be seen as his weakness.

[collapse]

ML learning how to express himself was nice. MC finding happiness in just being with her family was sweet. MC is perfectly ready to move on until ML shows up.
Spoiler

ML realizes he needs to show and say how much he cherishes MC because she deserves a caring partner. They had to face their past, accept their flaws, see their present selves, and move forward in learning who they are now and how they want to be treated in a positive relationship going forward.

[collapse]

Villains are just selfish, greedy people using the country's religious blind faith for power.
Spoiler

The saint is low IQ and just wants to be spoiled as the only saint. The temple or high priest is the biggest villain because they know the saint is fake but they want any saint to gain power to their beliefs. The prince isn't a bad guy but he is controlled as he has little defense from being brainwashed.

I don't know why I'm still reading this. As said, the plot is based on ridiculous misunderstanding. And when the FL asks finally "why?", instead of answering, the ML does crazy things. Then he proves himself being a very eloquent guy a chapter later. But it is so normal not to communicate at all when both love each other... just to dilute the sauce...

It is the second novel that I'm into reading, first of all, I've loved how strong-minded the female protagonist is, like "from now on I'll live my live for my own and new family - forget my ex-husband I won't love him anymore". However, everything changed when they met each other again.
Spoiler

She was shocked when he discorved her id, obviously it was her fault (a little 'cause the only contact they had with each other was throught guiding him) when she saw him going on a rampage and decided to guide him

[collapse]

Now about the villains - they are kind of boring, I guess
Spoiler

the crown prince is controlled by the saintess - she was the one that brought the three of them to this world by guiving them a book of the story - she is like "I just wanted to be loved by him" and harasses the FL (nothing really bad has happened to her, I'm still waiting for ML discovers everything she did)

[collapse]
It's a good light-dark romance.

I'm sorry if you didn't understand the review - It's my first time doing that.

Spoiler

ML knew the FL is his past wife like very early in the novel.

[collapse]

But it's kinda dragging bcs although the FL know that ML already knew who she is, she still adamant about it. Idk if this is good or not, but both of them can't seem to let go of their past 😌 ofc ML is sort of tr*shy but honestly it's makes sense since
Spoiler

since he was literally was kidnapped by the fake saintess (although he follows her on his own bcs the imperial family want him to found another guide to back-up the fake saintess that always cross dimension whenever she want.. She said she'll send him back but that's just a lie) The fake saintess also brainwashed the ML saying that FL was a government agent send to spy the ML. In a foreign world where he only know the fake saintess, the ML literally was all alone that's why he's tr*shy.

[collapse]

And just like most plot, the problems in their relationship is lack of communication ಠ益ಠ
Spoiler

But after his regression, I think ML became very cautious with his act bcs he can feel that the FL was mad at him (based on her past habit when she was his wife). So, he tried his best to not pissed her off any further. He also try to keep his obsession in check to not displeased her. Ofc, once in a while it leaked and he got scold by the FL.
