Come and Cry at My Funeral

Lowly shepherdess. Illegitimate daughter. Disgraceful duchess.

Although she had married her beloved Duke Izar, Freesia lived as though she was trapped at the bottom of a bleak, hapless abyss.

Her family took complete advantage of her, and the people of the duchy hated her for being a stain on the household’s honor.

And then there was her husband, Izar.

Even after she had suffered a miscarriage, he remained cold.

“To be born to parents like us—happiness would forever elude that child.”

At Freesia’s funeral, he had shed not a single tear.

But Freesia wished for one last thing.

Please, cry for me.

Shed even a single tear.

Dearly, I hope that your feelings might change.

Even if it means living for just one more year, that’s fine.

Once that time has passed, then.

Come and cry at my funeral.

*

For the first time, Freesia dared to glare at this man.

The dreadful document in her hand fell to the ground.

“How could you do something so cruel to me, to treat me worse than an animal!”

She was mistaken.

She thought, finally, this man held affection for her. That he trusted her.

That, perhaps… it could even be love.

But it was nothing like that. He deceived her.

“You ruined my life.”

There were only five months left before her demise.

I need to know why people find women's suffering so fascinating.

The sick pleasure the author obviously got was startling enough but to think people actually enjoy such perverse torture p*rn makes me want to give up on humanity and this world entirely.

Not for the feint hearted and trigger warnings for ab*se

I really hate this ML no redeeming quality at all.

And might be trigger warning but MC suffers really bad from her adopted family so Tread carefully seriously it's very traumatising experience very fked up sht happens and ML was useless... this was probably picked up probably because of good writing and seeing MC become more independent is great but still not for the faint hearted.

Around ch 50

they drugged MC, who came to a ball with ML to their house, took her to a warehouse, held her down bringing a mid wife to check her v*rginity if she slept with ML her husband they forced her to marry, while the step sis and her mother told her how her mother pissed herself in that same warehouse when she cut her tounge, and they practically popped her cherry then threw her in the garden while party still ongoing

While useless ML was just waiting knowing they will scare her, even though MC made him promise to stay near her as she was afraid of them

Then gets fooled by the half sis towaste time if not for second male lead

And he simply gets a piece of land from them after threatening them and gives it to MC

[collapse]

Never in my life I wanted a second male lead to just kick ml's ass in my life

I give it 3 stars because of the hope she doesn't end up with ML and just move on from him <<less

It's really surprising that such misogynistic plots are popular. I hope that here the main male character will suffer a well-deserved punishment and there will be no absurd happy end like in Bastian. If I were the author, I would like the heroine to publicly expose all the tricks of the duke, show his fraudulent contract, and then turn to the emperor and his half-brother - the magician, so that they would become guardians of her unborn child. Thus, the duke would lose his honor, and his child would be... more>> raised by his enemies. Then he will regret for the rest of his life. It is a pity that there will be no such ending <<less

The writing is pretty decent, although lacking in adjectives and more so blunt, the writer spares no descriptor left untouched when it comes to the main leads but everything else falls flat around them. The world building is haphazardly done and little is described about the empire other than a massive class divide, it isn't even clear if there is more than one empire in the story, not even a general statement in regard to the geography of the world either.

The rest of my review will be under the spoiler... more>> tag, it mostly spoiled details from early chapters and are not really big spoilers at all regarding the plot.

Spoiler

Magic is mentioned throughout, but very little is described and it possibly may be in the later chapters I have yet to read, the author mentioned the ducal households having powers though what these powers are or why they are important to the empire as it's stated that House Antares fell in disfavour with the Emperor due to 'losing' whatever power that used to manifest in the Antares bloodline, so clearly the powers mean *something* to the empire. Otherwise, why make that statement?

In the novel, it is stated that the rebels were fallen nobles, there is so many reasons the author could've chose for the rebellion's existence, the class divide being one of them, but for it to turn out to be simply a bunch of fallen nobles angry that they were no longer nobles was incredibly disappointing and such a missed golden opportunity for politics to come into play and further flesh out the Celestica Empire's political scene for the reader in a way that not only makes sense, but draws a clear comparison readers can make between our world and the world within the novel, which would've further grounded it in reality and had given the novel a foundation to stand on.

[collapse]

All in all, it's good enough to read I guess, I think I rated it too highly the first time around simply based on the first couple of chapters and after pouring over the details in the first 30 chapters in order to do a rewrite (yes I'm doing a rewrite, I got a personal vendetta against Izar and the author), I realized just how much the story falls flat. I could go on for days about this novel, I don't know why I've developed an obsession with it considering it's pretty subpar writing compared to other novels I've read, but I suppose I'm just upset at the missed opportunities the author had. <<less

Here is my view of the trauma mentioned by everyone. As of the current translation (c62) there has been some physical ab*se to our MC, but not by the ML.

Spoiler

Both the MC and the ML have had a traumatic, abusive, childhood. The MC copes by being quiet and submissive, trying to be as invisible as possible. This makes sense based on her low status. The story is primarily from the female lead's POV, but there are times when we get to see what the male lead is thinking and it seems that he has had an equally tragic upbringing. Though his status means that he did not suffer with hunger or cold, and he was not belittled by others, his father was abusive physically and emotionally. He was thrust into a leadership role and battle at the age of ten when his father committed su*cide after killing his mother.

He is overly focused on his duty and responsibility to the duchy, because that is all he knows. He has never had someone to talk with or confide in, and in fact has been warned since a young age that he could be betrayed at anytime. It is harder to understand his POV because of his status, but he was just as ab*sed as our MC and his understanding of human nature and emotions is severely lacking.

[collapse]

In conclusion, it is easy to sympathize with the MC, because the story is primarily from her POV, however I feel like the ML is equally sympathetic, its just that the author is only giving us glimpses into his story as we go. And these are things that the MC does not know as well because the ML communicates about as well as a talking rock. Some of the other reviews might be from further along in the story, so my opinion of him might change as more chapters are released. I get the impression for other reviews that the current translation might be splitting chapters so their current chapter might not be as far along as what others have mentioned. <<less

It's cliché, containing all the angst elements we already are so familiar with: 2nd life, abusive family, neglectful ML, difference in status, weak FL, the list goes on. Yet for some reason, I can't feel the angst enough; I think it's because of the writing style. The author doesn't thresh out the characters' perspectives enough. I started this novel, looking for a heart-wrenching read, but after 102 chapters (I understand the translators split the chapters into shorter ones), the supposed angsty theme really just revolves around the premise of the... more>> FL anchoring the whole 365 remaining days of her life into getting the ML to return her unrequited love, on top of the abusive people around her.

I've never rooted for the 2nd ML in any novels I've read. But in this novel, I do (unless the author does him a plot twist that will force me to change my mind). And it has a lot to do with how there's zero redeeming quality for the actual ML. In the other angst works I've read or are currently reading, the ML, as tr*shy as he may be, at the very least pays attention to the FL, thereby giving the readers something to hold on to. But it's the 2nd ML who does that here.

The only reason why I kept on going is I'm rooting for the FL. I'm hoping for character growth. I'm seriously hoping that she anchors her remaining days on actually trying to live a life with more meaning, rather than just hoping for the ML to love her back, because currently her life revolves around the ML.

Far from a masterpiece, but ok enough to read at night before sleeping, and ok enough not to be dropped. Though I'm barely holding on. For now, I'll pause at 102 and binge again once the work is completely translated. <<less
