After giving birth to a son, Zhu Yan eagerly anticipated his growth and eventual kingship, longing for the emperor’s demise so she could join her son in his kingdom as the Queen Mother…

Until the fourth year of Yuanhe, she discovered she had transgressed into a book, becoming the ultimate villainess of a palace intrigue novel, doomed to be executed. To survive, she considered living inconspicuously, adopting a laissez-faire approach, and avoiding the female protagonist. Eventually, she realized: she couldn’t hold back. Since then, she blazed a trail of seduction and destruction, unrivaled in her manipulative artistry…

With the arrival of new ladies-in-waiting, Zhu Yan, as a legendary figure in the palace, naturally became the object of their awe and envy. Each dreamed of becoming the next legend, stepping over predecessors to ascend.

Yet, where new faces smiled, the old ones wept. As one of the ‘old’, Zhu Yan thought: Better to wish for the emperor’s early demise than to waste time weeping. The emperor retorted, “Are you sure? As long as I live, you need not fear anyone in this world.”

The amount of times I felt like puking blood, my god. Such a great story, tr*sh male lead with occasional spineless moments from the female lead. Loved it, would absolutely read a sequel to it with the same protagonist.

Binged this novel in 2 days. Solid 4/5, I guess? Not much character development, but it is a decent read.

First off, I realized that ML's name/title was never mentioned even once throughout the entire novel. He's only referred to as the "dog emperor" LOL.

Anyway~ Our FL is logical, upright and stubborn. She sticks to her principles and never truly adapts to the era she transmigrated to. ML is a decisive and ruthless emperor who is only gentle towards FL. There wasn't a single moment in this novel where FL was... more>> happy. It made me kind of sad because the ML doted on her endlessly, but he also restricted her freedom and constantly used the lives of others to threaten her to submit to him. He's definitely a scumbag BUT I feel like he did genuinely cherish FL; he was always the first to apologize after arguments & constantly lowered himself to apologize just to be given the cold shoulder by FL. I would have rooted for them if we saw more character development from him. T__T

Spoiler

It makes sense why she never trusted the ML no matter what he did though.. He was obsessed with having her entombed with him if he ever passed away. By the end of the novel, he still stood by that decision.

[collapse]

One thing that confuses me is that ML is obsessed with beauty and it seems the ONLY reason he loved FL was because she was as beautiful as a "celestial fairy descending from the heavens". 🙄 Not once was it because he was moved by her character or actions.. He was just obsessed with her face. <<less

This is actually a great story, where the FL is a realist through and through until the end.

I've read a lot of novels with similar start where the MC married into the palace or any nobility keeps their cool and doesn't really falls in love with their husband, treating their position like a job instead. But usually they will surely ends up with their husband or other male lead. ... more>>
Spoiler

But our MC here until the end never truly gave out her heart, to the Emperor or any other. Bravo girl.

[collapse]

Our MC is actually a transmigrated modern person. She got sent into the Palace by her profit seeking father and held resentment on her list of freedom. She... hold on to her resentment really tight hahaha. Making sure her family will not get any benefit from her position as favourite of the Emperor.

And our ML, hmmm I don't really know whether we can dub him as one because of how the MC feels toward him until the end remains constant
Spoiler

she's afraid of him, immensely. Not that he abuse her or anything, but because of how a cruel Emperor he is, and she's unsure how long his affection will last.

[collapse]
But he is funny though where he is a total face con. LIKE A TOTAL FACE-CON. He appreciates anything beautiful, even so far as appreciating his male ministers for their handsome appearance. And even said to some that he didn't want to have meeting everyday so he doesn't have to see their ugly mugs hahaha.

The relationship between MC and the Empress are the best, each knowing their own boundary etc. And the Empress dang she treat her well.
Spoiler

Too bad she didn't managed to keep her life at the end, no fault of her but the damn Emperor just keep on killing people.

[collapse]
Poor Empress, like MC she just trying to survive the Palace like and they both know how fickle the Emperor can be.

The ending though might feels unsatisfying, because it a ROMANCE we expect moooore, but it is justified though. And also satisfying in the sense of you go girl, girl boss till the end.

Spoiler

She fake her death, live freely outside the Palace. Met her ex-fiance (who's actually her childhood friend she influence growing up to be the kind of perfect husband for her - loyal, no concubine etc. before she got carted off to the Palace by her greedy father) but she didn't actually get together with him (he proposed thou) and one day finds a way to go back to modern time by a mirage and took it. Go girl!!!

[collapse]

I have a lot more to say about this story such as even though she doesn't fully give out her trust to the Emperor, she acknowledged that she did have feelings for him, but not enough to gamble her life. <<less

Well I just finished the main story but didn’t read the extras as the end was good enough. (And the raws are pretty elusive)

First I have to say that it is a pretty good period piece centered on the intrigue and survival of women in the harem, and as a very realistic piece including the lack of respect for life from the ruling class, the unhinged behavior of an emperor who wields absolute power, and the impact reputation had especially on women, I wouldn’t really think of this piece... more>> as a “love-story” per se.

Our MC in a modern woman transmigrated in feudal China from birth, but having no memories of the novel she is in until she meets the former FL who is supposed to be her nemesis. The intricacies of these rebirths are very well done with just the right amount of foreshadowing to appear logical without feeling forced, and do explain a lot of the conflicts that spontaneously develop, reactions from the other characters included.

As our MC is pretty independent and has lived as such since childhood, she tries to make the best of her situation, even after being forcefully sent to the harem where she knows favor can be a way to survive but stays level-headed as the whims of the emperor aren’t something you can rationally count on.

The emperor, is a product of his time and position, supreme ruler, fed of the patriarchal teachings such as Confucianism that proved the “Three Obediances” and so on, can’t understand our MC’s needs in terms of independence, monogamy, or basically anything else, so while he does express affection, it is more a way to keep her as a Canary in a cage which to me was written as a beautifully crafted psychological warfare between to two leads, but if you were in the mood for a sweeter more Cinderellaesque story with HE it might not be the right book.

I won’t say whether the end was really HE or BE, but it isn’t centered on romance which I personally appreciated <<less

The story is great and captivating enough. I loved the FL. The ML is a slag, but he is the emperor so he can afford to be one. Honestly, he is a POS of ML. Despite the ML I loved the story. The story unfolds further in the extras I hope b/c the ending was quite abrupt. But until the end the FL never developed deep feelings for the dog emperor which quite suit my taste. The best outcome would be for FL to return to modern age and experience... more>> true love story with another lead and having the ML witness it through his dreams but not being able to do anything about it and realize because he is a pig he lost the most precious thing to him. <<less

Oh wow. This is definitely no run of the mill transmigration to ancient times & becoming the sole favorite of the emperor story. At first, I was frustrated about MC’s continuous rejection of the emperor, feeling it unnecessary when we all know she’s gonna end up as “the one who changes the scum bag”. I almost wanted to stop reading as it felt like there was too much of the same routine - ML does something to offend MC’s modern sensibilities, gets angry, ignore, quarrel, make up.

I was waiting for... more>> MC to adapt to the ancient times, get used to societal norms of the times: concubines, unquestionable imperial power, executions etc. But MC, to the end, never adapts & does not change.
The ending definitely threw me off, as it was only at the end that I realized MC has been unhappy her entire life (since transmigrating) and he desire for freedom is genuine.
I would say this is a very realistic portrayal of ancient times. It shows you how much Stories of a handsome young emperor who loves only you is more fantastical than a unicorn. It also starkly contrasts the attitudes, perspectives, principles, morals that people in different era have, and how because of that MC is never able to have a genuine relationship or anyone she can connect with, not a friend or even her son least of all the ML.
I guess the ending was the best for MC, but in terms of the story no there’s no “happy ending” per se.
Definitely give this a go if you’re sick of the usual trope. <<less
