The Villainess Hides Her Wealth

I became the villainous older sister of the heroine, who was jealous of her and fell in power.

But after doing evil deeds, knowing this world was inside a novel,

‘Is it worth hanging on to these people?’

My father, who only wants understanding and sympathy from me,

my older brother, who only sides with our illegitimate sister,

and the male characters, who are on edge whenever they see me; they’re all tiresome.

It’s time to hide my money… for complete independence!

***

“Did you hear that? The Imperial Newspaper of Economic Affairs recently updated the list of “10 businessmen who control the Empire”, and…!

“Lady Primrose is in first place!”

“Dear heavens, how rich must the Lady be then?”

One day, my business, which I had been hiding due to fear of it being harmed by my image as a villainess, was revealed.

But the people’s reactions were strange.

“A family relationship can’t be broken even if you don’t like it.”

“I don’t know either. Why I came to you instead of Lilika.”

“Is it hard to give me just one chance?”

It was ridiculous that the love I had hoped for only came true after giving up.

Besides, the way they believed that I would be willing to hold their hands was nothing short of arrogant to the end.

“Get out of my way.”

I answered with a big smile to the men who were applying for a dance partner.

It was good, a light novel, sure the cliche part was the ML, but besides that is was good. The major thing was.... Noo forgiveness, she didn't forgive them..

If this is a 2019 novel, I would've given it a 3 star. But no, it's not and considering how the author wrote two absolutely wonderful work (duchess with an empty shell and father, I won't do anything), this is a disappointment. I wanted to give it 1 star, but since I didn't drop it despite my rage, 2 stars it shall be. I have nothing against the translators.

My reasons:

    1. It's like a very typical "villainess given a second chance at life" and "realised she is in a novel and so is almost omnipotent".
        • There are reasons to root for Yuria, the MC. Though her villainous actions were her own, she was mistreated by her father and brother thanks to her white lotus stepsister Lilyca. But like I said, it's a typical story, so once Yuria regressed and realised she is in a novel (which is, pretty much the start of this story), she becomes #girlboss and thrashes every little scheme Lilyca has...
        • While it's kinda fun to see how Yuria one-ups Lilyca, it gets boring fast. And of course, only Enoch (ML and Crown Prince) wasn't charmed by Lilyca from the get-go. Oh, and his sister.
        • The business thing is a cool and neat way to improve Yuria's reputation and gain her a lot of money (so that she can actually move out of the ducal residence at about chapter 100). But once again, it's so repetitive. Yuria comes out with a new product, knights/ladies/etc are impressed, Lilyca tries to ruin it, Yuria stomps Lilyca, another new product... and repeat.
    1. The above continues until Lilyca became a "saint".
        • Spoiler

In a hunting competition, she did something to a particular stew (I think it's exchanging the not poisonous bird with something similar that is poisonous? I can't really remember) that caused high-ranking noble ladies to be sick. And she unleashes her fake healing powers (that transfers pain/death to someone else) and wow, we have Saint Lilyca!!!!!!!!!!!!

          [collapse]
        • And how does she have those powers?
          Spoiler

Lilyca's mother is from the red river clan, who has supernatural powers. Guess what powers her mother has that passed onto her? It's the power to be loved and brainwash the ones who love her...

          [collapse]
    1. The romance has nothing to write home about. Yuria and Enoch met more often thanks to the business, a lot of "what's this feeling I have for him/her"... Once again, it's after chapter 100 that there's some progress in their relationship. SOME, BUT BARELY ANY. The very last chapter of the main story is a confession and hug! That's all, not even a kiss! Yes, this is not a rated novel, but... it's really really sad.
    1. The writing is painfully boring. There is a lot of telling rather than showing. And worse of all, as the story progresses, there are so many typos. SO MANY. I'm not the only one who thinks this way, there are multiple Korean comments in kakao calling it out. The prologue scene you see at the first or second chapter? When it finally appeared (at around chapter 100ish) it was a literal copy paste. It reeks of laziness.
I read it to the end because it was free to read if I wait and I just kept hoping it will get better. I was a fool. I don't know if I'll read the side stories (if there is) since I'm not exactly invested in Yuria and Enoch's relationship. Unless, maybe... if the side stories are about the duchess (Yuria's mother) ? The woman has suffered enough (she is the real saint for accepting and treating that Lilyca like her own daughter!) and deserves to spend the rest of her life living it up, drinking tea with her friends or travelling around the world. And if she meets a handsome sliver fox that treats her like a queen, I'll be her biggest supporter.

Partly reviewing to warn you that there are some unhidden spoilers in xelixette's review. Since they seem to have completed it on different site (possibly mtl-ing the official site?) they go into more detail you may or may not want. (Tho you'll only see this first if you have them by date and not likes... At least rn?)

As for me, I'm up to chapter 28 and I don't have any real complaints. It is a pretty typical villainess returnee plot, I won't deny that. But I enjoy how she... more>> handles sitatuations to deal with her enemies in the house, as well as her relationship with her mother. Considering the first chapter, it's obvious she'll still be cast out but I'm hoping Mom is able to stick around and we get some happy mom/daughter moments.

As someone very familiar and interested in psychology, I've never had an issue understanding and often affirming that situations like Lilica are absolutely possible, especially in a world without instant communication. Though considering the current cancel culture, it might work regardless. Anyway, so about Lilica surely still getting her expelled. (No major spoilers)

Spoiler

As we read on, Yuria handles situations with her family very well, manipulating the others in a way that forces them to either be faced with acknowledging her actions or in a way that will get them to hurt Lilica in the long run. Like turning the maids against her and such. However, it is obvious throughout that she still has at least some hold on everyone, even those who know of her actions. She has been working on her reputation and actively bringing down MC from the very start and she's quite obviously malicious but also meticulous. So there has to be an inciting moment that gets everyone to overturn everything they felt about her to just adore her once more. Probably something that makes her a saint in the eyes of the public, like last time. There's not much anyone could do about that in Yuria's position, no matter how hard she's worked; thus she gets expelled.

[collapse]

I honestly really like Enoch, the prince. He cares for his sister and is willing to do most anything to help her out. He has incredible business acumen and is very considerate of his people. He is straightforward with Yuria and that is something to be appreciated. I haven't seen too much of him but even early on it's pretty obvious that he's going to be the ML, so here are some of my thoughts on that. (Minor spoilers)

Spoiler

"Biggest" spoiler out of the way first. Ready?

Apparently the romance is slow burn. Like, really slow burn.

... meh. :/

I guess that could be a dealbreaker for some people, especially since there is a romance tag, and that's valid. But I don't mind the idea of there really being no established romance til the end. This story has its focus on different things, and I can appreciate that. In fact, I'm hoping this means they build the romance on an actual friendship first. What a novelty, the main pair being friends first and not going straight to romance! Personally, I love the idea. So if we focus on her business and her growing her influence through it; along with her relationship with her mom and her developing ones with the prince and princess; and then her own personal growth? I feel thats plenty for the story to focus on. But maybe that's just me.

[collapse]

So I hope you give this a shot if you like villainess return plots, with focus on business and personal growth, as well as some good revenge in smaller steps. <<less

I really like this novel. It takes a few common tropes, turns it on their heads, and makes it refreshing. The main character, Yuria, is enjoyable in her intelligence, wits, and heart. The undying love and determination she has for her mother is sweet and heart-warming. The way she wants to get back at her father, brother, and half-sister makes me want to continue rooting for Yuria to punch them in the mouths. None of them deserve her or her mother. They are all tr*sh.

The relationship building is good. It's... more>> not a rushed kind where they meet once and friendship is built. Yuria has to interact multiple times with most characters to have a meaningful positive relationship. The male lead being the exception, but their first ever meeting was under different circumstances.

It is slow to update, but that just means the group is taking their time for a top-notch quality translation. The wait is always worth it. Please keep up the great work! <<less
