There is a depth to the novel I didn’t expect from the synopsis. Why do I keep being baited by quirky titles and light-hearted descriptions?

Just to warn others, this novel has an actual possessive ML, one beyond typical possessiveness in relationships and in other BL novels. To clarify, this isn’t an ML who occasionally eats vinegar, this is an ML who will actually lock up their loved one to keep as a possession.

Author really made sure to let you know that this is his character, and it’s not... more>> so easily changed. For me, that is part of the appeal of the novel. Here, much of the progress being made in the story centres on the ML’s realisation that he must control himself rather than the MC to be together.

No matter how much ML and MC love each other (and they do), ML’s excessive control is always going to impede a happy ending for the couple, and it becomes a running theme for the rest of the story.

Honestly, if the ML didn’t learn how to control himself and cater to the MC, I would have given this a negative review.

Like I said before, there is a depth to the story I didn’t expect from the summary and the initial chapters. There is more to the original story than what MC first thinks.

Without spoiling too much, rather than your expected campus love story, this novel is actually about a second chance for both the MC and ML. Of course, it also includes a great dynamic between the MC’s friends and the setting of high-school events which run through the background of the novel.

Spoiler-filled continuation of review:

Spoiler

It was interesting to have the layers behind the MC’s “transmigration” explored. Personally love it when transmigrations have purpose, because it just means the love was deep enough to cross space and time.

This novel delves into a tragic past between the Original MC and ML - I hinted to it above but because of ML, the MC becomes a trapped canary. Even though the MC seemed was willing at the start because of his deep love for the ML, it just does not end well for the both of them because of ML’s controlling nature.

Going further on the ML, what I liked is that he was changing and controlling himself way before he even learns of his past wrongs. And when he does learn of it, it just fuels the change that was already happening.

Although compared to the original, current MC has learned to have self-respect and stand for himself, he still has moments when he becomes weak around ML - it’s my main dislike with the character.

getting sleepy will continue later

On initial perusal, I expected this novel to be similar to 'i only loved for three chapters in a campus romance novel' where the initially sticky canon fodder changes and becomes cold and because of that the ML takes interest. It's pretty similar in that MC decides to stay far away from the ML (the white moonlight but he's the most black white moonlight I've ever seen lol) and the ML takes interest.

Except. Why does the ML like MC? I don't normally pick too much at the falling in love... more>> aspect because there doesn't need to be some grand reason to be in love but.
Spoiler

ML is a face con and MC's face is his type. MC pre transmig is a spoilt brat but post transmig is less annoying and ML takes interest. Fair. But the story does a lot of emphasis on how ML is exceptionally gentle to MC and doesn't want to lock him up and cut his wings of as he would with any other toy person he's interested in but isn't obedient. It implies it's his changing feelings that influence this 'change of heart' but o still don't understand why he likes MC? Any time they spend together MC is afraid and trying to pull away (with maybe one or two exceptions?), especially after he declares romantic intent. It's not like other "interested in you after you've changed and stoped liking me' novels where the main pair spend a decent amount of time together and love gradually forms. It feels like the only reason he hasn't enacted locked room play with the MC is because the author knows that'd make him a scumbag and is trying very hard to push the love aspect

[collapse]

Also, I like possessive yandere MLs but there's something about He Qinghuan that makes me really wary. He's the pushy kind who consistently pushes against MC's refusal and is pretty stalkerish and entitled as well. Even his friends are wary about whether he'll lock MC up cos MC is stubborn. I think the main reason I don't like him or their relationship is that I was expecting a sweet if overbearing high school romance but I got the weird Yandere ML chases his fleeing wife vibes instead. This is coming from someone who genuinely enjoys unhealthy relationships and Yan MLs ala FOD. I guess it's also cos MC emotionally seems really against it all but I'm guessing the author is gonna push the 'actually I like you but I can't recognise my feelings because I'm too immersed in the original plot' angle or sumn.

Might edit if I finish the raws. <<less

I went into this novel expecting a good plot and cute couple due to the positive ratings but instead I got this?!?!

Spoiler

First of all, let's delve into the fact that the MC is literally such a pushover and it pisses me off so much. I kind of understand the reasoning because of his previous life but come on now:/ not only does he realise the fact that the ML was super crazy in his first life and drove his loved ones to ruin all for the sake of 'possessiveness', but he chooses to stay with him regardless! Like boy, he cut you off from the world and forced you not to leave the house until your death and now what, you think he'll change just because your approach is different in this timeline? Sigghhhh I wish he didn't brush off the ML's actions so quickly because even the MC himself does not realise how affected he is by them still. For eg, in his first life the ML punished the MC whenever he was disobedient (didn't listen to him or follow his expectations of being a perfect lover) by forcing him to eat chocolate until he was compliant. This is also the reason as to why the MC strongly dislikes chocolate in his current life even when he had no memory of the past.

Idk I just hate this ongoing trend in BL novels where they downplay or try to gain sympathy for the love interests that do not deserve it. It's clear that the MC does have Stockholm syndrome and it's sad to read the author write about what he's experienced, only for the MC to say 'well, he's not the same person from before uwu'. I dropped it after chapter 52 so I may seem a bit biased or like I don't have the full story, but I do not want to continue reading this novel at all. It made me feel awful.

The ML is psychotic. He was good to the MC but he didn't look at him equally, the ML looked at MC as his possession. I thought the novel was a fluff. Fortunately, this is Not the typical school life, that's why I rated 4 than 2 stars. Latter half is predictable and not interesting anymore.

For Flaws: Same with @rcirteab the MC slightly pissed me off when he couldn't reject the ML. The MC should be firm. I know, most of the time he agreed with ML's or else ML's possessiveness lead to psychosis. However in less than 6months he gave in 😅 Another flaw: MC is scared with the novel protagonist yet he didn't get scared to the person who locked him til his death, Really, love makes a person s*upid. Also the author prolongs the story that can be shortened.

Plot twist: real 1st ending of the gu wang
Spoiler

the ML (white moonlight locked the MC (gu wang), after the car accident. Gu wang didn't die. But died at the age of 26 (forgot if it was 26 or 28).

Eventually he was reborn in the another world as orphan and transmigrated back to his original world, which he thought it was a novel. Both the MC and ML gain their memories eventually.

MC eventually accepted the ML (in less than 6 months😅)

Complete and utter bullshit. He Qinghuan is full of shit. Treating MC like shit, then when MC transmigrates and says he doesn't like him anymore and tries to avoid him, suddenly He Qinghuan is interested in him. No. Please f*ck off He Qinghuan. You don't get a second chance. Agh I hate how the author makes them always cross paths that allows them to fall in love with each other.

Also thanks to the spoilers, I see that He Qinghuan is even more of a piece of sh*t and doesn't deserve... more>> MC. So dumb of MC to just easily forgive him. Dumb dumb dumb. Dropped. <<less

I guess "possessive" is an understatement. It has an ML who is really psychotic, the yander-ish kind of ML who doesn't really have any qualms at using any sort of under-handed methods which is quite goosebump inducing. Anyways, I felt like the novel is like a cross-over between "Cheese in the trap and Death progress bar" minus the system setting. The ML is quite similar to the lead in Cheese in the trap who, putting it in a better way, tries to manipulate situations to his own favour. The manhwa... more>> isn't at least that much creepy as compared to this novel since stuff here are more intense, I guess. Now, the only DPB factor is that MC has a similar transmigration-cum-rebirth setting. He dies a tragic death, transmigrates to another world as an orphan, grows up to return back to his own world completely unaware of his previous life, changes for the good, has flashes of his previous self and later comes to know of his rebirth, which is quite similar to DPB.

It has it's pros, I'll give it that, but for me the cons outweighed them.

PROS:

Spoiler
  1. The major plot point being a "transmigration-cum-rebirth" trope. Being a fan of DPB, I had really been craving for something similar so this plot point for me was the cherry on the top and the reason for continuing till the end.
  2. Character development: The characters did grow out of their shells. Like, the MC who used to be immature and unappreciative of his good fortune, was put in a difficult environment after being reborn, which honed his personality and skills for the better and changed him. Same goes for the ML. The realisation of loosing MC in the first arc made him restrain his over-the-top obsessive personality and bring about a change in his treatment towards MC.
[collapse]

CONS:

Spoiler
  1. Stockholm: Now why I think it's Stockholm/maybe the MC is more inclined towards a masochistic personality. In his first life, he used to be an arrogant rich young master who used to chase ML, who himself had a prestigious background. MC didn't really have any talents and he was at the bottom in his class and he did participate in fights. But that just doesn't justify what he went through in his life. MC honestly loved ML, chased him, gave him the best of gifts (like foreign chocolates and stuff), wrote a song and sang for him and cared and cherished him. Honestly, if you don't like him, then subtly reject him. If that doesn't work, then state the facts clearly. It was justifiable that ML did not like the fact that gifts were being shoved unto him and he just wanted to get rid of MC but to throw away all those gifts right in front of him, disrespect the song that he earnestly prepared for him, that does go way over the board. Not to mention, ML is a face-con and has a really twisted personality. MC's face is his type but he doesn't like his personality. For him, his favourite kind would be someone "obedient" whom he can imprison for the rest of his life, and that's what he did actually at the end of the first life. MC had a "staged" car accident (by the supposed male lead of the book-who hated MC to the core because of the fact that he chased his white moonlight) and lost his legs. MC's family and his best friends' respective families were destroyed by this book male lead, their future completely ruined. MC was declared dead by the ML and imprisoned at his home for the rest of his life, until the age of 24 when he died of lung infection and multiple organ failure. He loved ML, so despite not being able to use his legs for the rest of his life he stayed with him. But when he wished to go outside, ML would try to deter him through various means. Initially he did delude himself that ML cared for him but later came in terms with the fact that ML wished to imprison him and went along with his wishes. ML took care of MC like taking care of one's "possessions" and when MC wasn't "obedient" (like when he said he didn't like chocolates/didn't want to continue eating them) , ML would "punish" him (shove chocolates into his mouth)
for an entire week every single meal of the day till MC accepted ML's care "obediently"). This fact freaking crept me out. Also, ML doesn't really care whatsoever regarding MC's loved ones, since he didn't even inform them of MC being alive nor did he take any revenge against that other guy (the book's male lead) despite being aware of the fact that he plotted against MC. He didn't even clear out MC's name regarding the fact that MC was the one who "poisoned" ML despite being clearly aware who the true perpetrator was. Finally, MC slowly lost his will to live and passed away at the young age of 24 and wished to do the simplest of things (like feeding pigeons, singing at the square, surfing with his besties) before finally passing away. ML accompanied him till his last days and promised that he would be "reborn" as a personality that suits his (ML's) tastes and they shall get together again (and they do after MC gets reborn and ML gets his memories of the previous world back). I just felt like author has done a quite a lot of foreshadowing here just so the ML doesn't appear to be a "jerk", afterall, he is the protagonist and the MC needs to fall for him for the story to work.
  2. The plot was fast - paced. Like, at least, the MC shouldn't have forgiven the ML so quickly and I wouldn't be surprised if he got blackened after all that and took revenge against all. No, it would have been better if the plot did gear towards that direction, because despite being dog blooded, at least it would have been satisfactory.
  3. Both the protagonists are completely sick in the head. MC is terrified of the guy who ruined his legs and not of the guy, who imprisoned him, didn't let him even meet his loved ones, emotionally and mentally tortured him and ultimately caused his death by making him loose all the will to live. There are signs of PTSD, albeit negligent, like when the MC starts to feel tremors throughout his body when ML tries
to "shove" chocolates into his mouth after being reborn (and by this point in time ML had already gained his memories). ML does restrain himself but that shouldn't really give him any goody points. There's also the instance where he watches MC "sleep" beside the bed, throughout the night w/o his knowledge. There was also the time when he followed MC by car in the middle of night, just so he could kidnap and imprison him at his home, which comes off as eerily disturbing. It does make sense that ML has a few screws loose because he comes from a dysfunctional family, where his dad has multiple mistresses and children at least his age, more and less than him and he has to be a perfectionist at all fields or else he will get locked up in a black room (and it's not a black room literally but rather an actual black room where there's no light/windows and is completely sound proof. It had been a tradition in his family since he was a kid which in the end resulted in his twisted personality). I guess he had it really hard but that doesn't give him any right to "ruin" MC's life. Not to mention those sane-minded friends of his could at least try to stop him in his previous life. It really irked me actually.
    [collapse]
I guess I'll give 1.5 stars for the translation quality and the other 1.5 for the author's work. Actually, the translation is pretty good but the author's work just didn't work out for me. I hoped to see something better. <<less

I wanted to finish this novel but gave up at chapter 29. I just felt like MC gives in too easily. I thought he was determined to stay away from the ML but what he does is the complete opposite 😶. He was practically at his beck and call... It may have something to do with his past but it's not just working for me.

I am glad that I persisted in finishing this novel.

The love of the ML and MC is both persistent and flawed, but beautiful.

The side characters are also very dynamic. Loved the extra stories.

This novel is all about acceptance, whether it is about trauma, love life, and growing up.

The story was written beautifully. It's sweet with bits of angst. There's also a twist in the middle (which I didn't expect to be honest) which ties everything together and adds depth necessary to the story. In the novel, every character had a miserable end, whether it is the main characters or the side characters. No one had a good ending. And during this second chance, everyone turns towards a better future.

Honestly? I cried a... more>> lot reading this novel. MC and ML, while they don't have the healthiest relationship because ML is extremely extremely possessive, had to deal with a lot of emotional baggage and other struggles. And they're willing to change, though it's hard (especially for ML). ML's possessiveness is way over the top, to the point of wanting to lock MC up and keep him away from everyone, and he's gradually learning how to keep it in check and respect MC. Meanwhile, MC is changing to a better person as a whole. Even the side characters gained attention from the author! Everyone's slowly overcoming their problems while supporting each other and becoming a better version of themselves to change their tragic ending. They have their own closure and no one was left out (it's in the extras) and it's beautiful.

One particular paragraph that I like (not too spoiler-ish actually) :

Spoiler

In the past, Gu Wang walked a hundred steps towards He Qinghuan. Now, Gu Wang doesn't need to do anything. He Qinghuan is willing to walk one thousand steps, and even ten thousand steps towards him.

seriously??? author??? you just had to make me cry this way...

i haven’t read to the end yet. Starting from the halfway of the story up to where I read it was basically how the MC and ML mending their relationship.

this story is beautiful

Spoiler

i thought it’s gonna be the ‘forced’ romance by ML while the MC got his heartbeat sped up then escalated into love, but I was wrong, the ML was willing to learn to constrain himself which hopefully later they can develop a totally healthy relationship, this is what’s beautiful to me

Spoiler for ch 21

"Now the wound on Gu Wang's face makes people feel disturbed, like a milky white paint being messed up with red, making one's heart irritable. But surprisingly, there is a different charm after being abused. It is purely different from the usual cleanliness.

But He Qinghuan still feels it is an eyesore because it was through other people's hands."

Is that a hint of f*cking abuse in the future chapter? What the f*ck? I have a feeling about this male lead and it is NOT good. The way they describe it has a hint of happening in the future chapters and im sure of it, and the way he sees it disgust me. Hes pretty possessive, mc's obvious signs of discomfort whenever hes around was thrown out! All this motherf*cker could see is a "delicate and sweet" boy that seemingly look like he was trying to move on when the truth is he is f*cking avoiding you!!!

Really appreciate the author for writing such alarming situations and full of red flags based characters.

What you want to avoid in real life happening to yourself are things that has been presented delightfully for the readers to fantasise about.

Anyway’s not my thing but still good that I stumbled upon.

I usually don't write reviews (becoz im not good at it!), but I saw this one had a low rating and all...

This a warm story, kinda like the warm sunshine on winter days?! (I'm bad at this, forgive me if that sounded s*upid or weird!)

I read that ML is possessive man, like the kind that locks you up, yes he is, but he has changed, esp since MC didn't make it easy for him. (yeah that felt nice.) The reltionship between the couple- I really couldn't understand the ML... more>> (maybe because of MTLing) , the MC was understandable though, his affection toward the ML allows him to forgive and also since the ML was ready to rectify himself of that particular behavior- there's character growth. The story develops in the school time, so I guarantee you that you'll get to enjoy those parts very well.

Even if the ML is a very cold person, the MC and his friends are real Sunshine. My favorite part of the story was also the scene with his friends and ahh, yes, Mc's parents too, especially his Dad!! The teachers and his classmates too would not fall behind. (similar to Pay attention to me!, if u have read it, the classroom atmosphere felt was similar!)

Not a complicated story at all, but I won't call it simple, warm (the relationship between MC and his friends, family and classmates), no misunderstandings and the changed ML has never done anything overboard.

So give it a read. <<less
