Another top tier novel by papapa, mostly known for 'The Regressor and the Blind Saint', this time in the murim/wuxia genre.

The novel is about a child who was born under the 'heaven-slaying star' with a fate of a killer, but was raised by the 'sword star' in order to defy that kind of fate.

After he embarks on his journey while not knowing much about the world, he meets the female lead and thus their relationship begins.

Both the martial arts and the romance aspects are done extremely well, along with the... more>> right amount of comedy.

I do have to say that the novel's start is slow but it will be rewarding as you go on. <<less

I've been getting into murim novels recently and saw this one had good reviews, but it's ending up to be really grating to read for me for one single reason: The MC is s*upid. Not regular s*upid but like insanely naive, stubborn, and completely lacks critical thinking s*upid. It's made even worse by the fact that the novel keeps mentioning how he's super smart, but then does nothing to establish that. The entire first arc after he leaves home is really annoying because of how dumb this guy is.

Spoiler

He blindly charges into a situation after hearing rumors and doing nothing to check or verify them, immediately falls for the heroine because shes hot and then simps for her and just sits and waits for orders from her, all while her mental narrative tells you all about hows shes using and manipulating him and how easy it is to do so because hes s*upid

[collapse]

After the first arc is resolved, I'd hope they would start to let off the uber-naive trait but then he gets into a situation that proves that having literally zero critical thinking or problem solving is going to be a core character trait of his.

Spoiler

They are in a valley filled with death/poison Qi, literally nothing can survive there and MC has to carry pills in his mouth in order to not die, he sees a random little girl run off and is not suspicious at all and wants to help her. FMC explains logically how it's literally impossible that there's a normal little girl in this death valley, he stubbornly ignores her, makes a dumb speech about how it's what heros do (charge in without thinking) and goes to help her. Surprise, she's a monster and hin going to help causes issues for the group.

[collapse]

It's just impossible to want to keep reading about and rooting for a guy this s*upid. Think of the worst case of an overly naive MC you've seen and the author has dialed this guy way past that to the point the writing is terrible.

Edit: why does this website censor the word s*upid? <<less

Only read 13 chapters but this is really fun.

MC is so innocent and naive. He grew up sheltered from the outside world and was raised by 2 martial arts masters for 18 years so he lacks a lot of life experience for someone of his age. They only seem to have taught him about martial arts and principles of righteousness but little to no street-smarts or how the world actually operates. There were some funny moments because of this, for example when he

The FMC is level-headed, decisive and a competent leader so I enjoy seeing her inner monologues. About the romance,

which may lead to some spicy interactions down the road. Overall, despite their power dynamic being the way it is, MC fortunately still has unshakeable principles he follows and won't compromise on. As for the martial arts aspects, MC is super OP in terms of potential and I worry this will ruin the tension of future fights and power-scaling, but I'll withhold my judgement for now. One aspect that's quite interesting is his heaven slaying fate

which essentially means he becomes manic at the sight of blood and can lose control to become a blood-thirsty savage

and I bet it will cause a major incident at some point in the story. Anyways, FMC is also strong, although nowhere near MC's level. But she has mysterious roots and her potential is yet to be seen.

Overall, the novel seems to have a nice balance between comedy and seriousness, and I hope it continues like this. I also hope the author makes a genuine attempt at tackling the story themes of morality and righteousness, by constantly challenging MC's beliefs and posing difficult questions to him throughout the story and allowing his actions to have real consequences, rather than taking the "easy way out". I'm not expecting something really heavy, but I hope it doesn't end up a half-assed attempt. <<less

Having read over 40 chapters now, I feel I can give a solid review of this excellent murim/wuxia novel. The Heaven-Slaying Sword has been an absolute joy to read so far.

The story follows a young man who was born under an ominous fate to become a crazed killer, but was raised by a benevolent martial arts master to walk the path of righteousness instead. His naivete and pure-hearted nature make for brilliant comedic moments as he tries to navigate the harsh realities of the cultivation world while holding firm to... more>> his moral principles.

What really makes this novel shine though is the fantastic character work. The protagonist's idealism clashes perfectly with the cynical pragmatism of the lively female lead, resulting in amazing banter and relationship dynamics. Their romance has been very well-developed so far, feeling organic while still keeping that "will they, won't they" tension sizzling.

The martial arts scenes are also a treat, descriptive and hard-hitting. The power scaling is well-paced, with the protagonist's monstrous potential being foreshadowed and teased at perfectly. I'm highly anticipating when he can finally cut loose.

Overall, The Heaven-Slaying Sword is a refreshingly unique cultivation story that balances comedy, romance, drama and action in an incredibly compelling way. Papapa has crafted another certifiable hit. If you're a fan of murim/wuxia at all, you absolutely must check this one out. <<less

This book is kinda funny with a bit more naivety and misunderstandings than I normally accept but it is pretty good overall. I enjoy how well written the combat is and how each character comes alive when mentioned, we can really feel their development. 10/10.

By far one of the best Murim I've read so far. Despite the complaints of some other reviewers, in my opinion the protagonist, Mok Riwon, is in fact part of what makes this novel a great read. He's very distinct, with a strong personality and clear beliefs, which quickly sets him leagues apart from how generic many Murim protagonists can be, all overlapping with each other. Some might find him annoying because of his naivete, but that naivete is an important part of the story. The main female lead, Hwa-seo... more>> is also very enjoyable, with her teasing and abrasive personality that hides her actual intentions and feelings making her quite enjoyable to read interacting with Mok Riwon. The story is beginning to ramp up into its main plotline, but most of the main characters seem to have been introduced, and the relationships have had a fair bit of development.

Hoping this gets picked again for translation! <<less

Really fun novel

This is the first cultivation novel I've ever truly enjoyed, maybe because it's Korean. Maybe I just can't get over the differences in culture or writing style of Chinese novels. I don't know.

Either way, great blend of comedy, action and romance without being too overbearing or absurd with the comedy.

  1. One very minor qualm I have is that the settings arent very descriptive, so sometimes I blank out and don't know where they are, BUT that's something I've only just now realised is in many other Asian novels. I don't know why, but I only noticed it after I started reading this. It's not bad, and the settings I think are described sufficiently, but not in detail and not frequently. If you prefer more straightforward action than descriptive settings (like me, though I do need a little bit of reminding) then you shouldn't have a problem with it.
