The Great Demon Holmes

God is creating a legend!!!! We need a little faith to give people a backbone, and then add some man-eating demons to get everyone excited! Add some love… and a dash of hatred… rebellion and impulsiveness. Finally, throw in a familiar protagonist with a slightly dark personality, otherwise, it won’t be interesting. Oops… went a bit overboard!

So, in a small alley on the streets of London, Sherlock slowly emerges from the shadows, holding a head in his hand. Blood drips from his spine, tick-tock, tick-tock. Excellent, the killer has been dealt with. The next challenge is to prove that the killer is indeed the killer.

I must say, this is almost like LotM, but not really; only the world building is the same. It seems closer to LotM 2, if anything. I'll let the reader decide for themselves. It's too early to say anything affirmative, but it is good.

Worldbuilding - It's interesting and exactly what I wanted from it. Its dark, fantastical, and what I would expect if magic was in a society; used for nothing but violence and personal gain

Characters - They are kind of one-dimensional, not that its bad, i'd say this is... more>> more of a power fantasy anyway, so I don't want character arcs anyway.

Plot - I think the author is kinda aware that they don't know how to write a mystery, or maybe they didn't put a lot of thought into this mini arc since its the beginning and nothing serious. Again, it's too early to say anything definitive.

The translation is good and the chapters are short. There are paragraphs in between sentences, which I like a lot more than a bunch of small sentences, which seem to be the norm. <<less

It's a very dull read. Translation is good, but the story itself leaves a ton to desire. I really liked the setting, but in 20 chapters it just left me more and more bored rather than more and more interested. I'd say 20 chapters is a good enough amount to feel out what kind of novel this is and what to expect down the road. I bet some people will claim it's not enough, but if you read in a focused manner for well over an hour, the author should've... more>> gotten you interested already. It's not a movie that can be lazy watched after losing interest.

I mean, the whole detective, demons from hell, mu*der and the steampunk like setting with steam armors and so on is nice, but it doesn't matter how awesome the setting is if the author can't properly utilize it. It feels like he's going too much for gore and "shock value" rather than setting the mood and immersing the readers. It's like a scary movie that goes for jump scares all the time, if you've seen a fair bit of such things before and it's overused, the reader won't feel much of anything. Very gory scenes, mu*ders and elaborate descriptions of said things and the creatures of hell but the plot itself leaves much to be desired, it just doesn't grasp my attention with the way it's written. It ends up feeling forced, as if the author isn't sure how to spin the story itself so he ramps up on easy descriptions, trying to force feed the readers on how "dreary", "scary" and "dark" the world is. But when everyone acts depressed, dark and mysterious without much build up, the story appears one-dimensional. The important details are squeezed out to make room for what is simply glorified filler.

I also feel like it's almost impossible to relate the characters on any level. I like dark novels and protagonists that are evil or crazy, but this guy is a bit too weird and we don't get to understand his thoughts enough to care about him.

Overall, it gives me the impression of someone trying too hard to make the character soulless and inhuman. I feel like readers should never have to guess what goes on in the head of the protagonist or who they are, where they came from and so on, because it becomes very hard to care about a protagonist that, for all intents and purposes, appears to be a side character in his own novel. <<less
