Shiraishi Gomichi, an ordinary high school student, has a secret. He has a memory of his previous life. In another world, different from this one, Morimichi was a ‘hero” who saved humanity. However, this is only the story of his previous life. In this life, it was supposed to be a normal student life, but the appearance of Mai Shiina, a girl who moved into the same class as him, changes his ordinary life. She was a reincarnaited witch like Gomichi, who once plunged another world into disaster. They had killed each other many times in their previous lives, but when Gomichi asks her what she wants now, Mai tells him.

“I can’t live without you!”
“What… ?”

Aight, I don’t know what happened but, MC was introduced to be kinda easygoing until he meets the female MC anyway. Their first interaction left a bad taste in my mouth, you should read at least until there to see if you think you like it, but this ain’t for me.

First off that "I can't live without you" isn't a confession, it means literally. It wasn't the fluffy romcom I expected. There are a lot of beautiful female characters around MC and they seem to be in love with him too, simply put, it's missing the harem tag. Also I'm starting to like those side characters more than the FMC so I think I'll stop reading here or it's gonna hurt bad..

Alright what can I say? This is just too unoriginal! I know, I know most stories are like that but to explain it, I'm not just talking about some simple use of 'cliche tropes'... This novel is on the whole different level than just mere use of 'cliches', it is basically an amalgamation of various overused tropes. It felt like this story was made and heavily relied based on many other stories.

  • The flow of conversation - especially on how the characters talk, the sentence structure and even down to the dialogue's word by word of the characters was unoriginal. The characters dialogues was like some copied from some script of other stories.
  • The background story - likewise, it was a child fairy tale-like story, MC is a hero who is very kind to a fault that he doesn't even want to kill his mortal enemy, basically a personality of a pushover. Even the art didn't let anything go, the MC's past appearance is basically a prince charming like what the 2D girls dream in some old shoujo manga.
  • The characters - It was horrible 'cause basically, MC was given with a usual Japanese Good Guy personality. MC's friend's job is basically there to act as a clown for the MC. MC's childhood friend will of course become a girl who secretly but obviously has crush to the MC but for some reason MC doesn't notice. Then the FMC will be the super duper beautiful black haired transfer student, everyone's crush but for some reason she become close to the MC. Then add some more harem girls! Like seriously? This is just too much cliches. Oh lord.
The story was written well but it's too plain and unoriginal, I can't see any uniqueness in the writing either. It's taking unoriginality to a completely 'nother level! It's just too obvious. As long as you have... more>> enough experience on reading novels, you'll picked up how much the author is inspired from other novels. It's like overused scenes was extracted from various manga/anime/novels. Would have been better to at least make some efforts to hide it. But blatantly writing all the cliches without any cover nor unique elements in it is just too disgusting.

PS: Character interaction is also bad.

Rather than a flat 4, it’s a 4.5/5. It was this close to being perfect.

Even though there’re only 2 volumes, the pacing and development are great.

The first volume is great, but the second volume gives me headache.
Don’t get me wrong, it was good, and I understood that it was a set up for the confession (and it was banging reading through the confession), but jeez, I just wish it went a different way. It could have been anything, the curse went haywire, the hero reawaken his power, anything, and it would have been better than what we have. But I guess this is just a side project for the author to take a break from haibara-kun, so, it is what it is.

This is a decent romcom. The main character and the heroine are both likable and have cute interactions. I would give it four stars, but volume 2 wastes too much time on love triangle melodrama with the childhood friend. The series is already short at two volumes, so it really can't afford to waste that time. The story would be a lot better if the childhood friend character didn't exist.

The first volume of this story was pretty good. I would disagree with SprigganRance that this story is missing the harem tag, while it does have some typical rom-com elements where a lot of girls like him they all could qualify for the grey line where you could argue if they like him or just care/worry about him.

For LongXi's review I would recommend reading further. Although I do think that their interactions at the start are somewhat of a plothole, but there is at least a reason why he acted... more>> that way and it does get better.
Spoiler

So the reason why he was hostile is because he was indoctrinated as a child to become a hero in a program that had 100 kids and every other one dropped out due to their minds breaking or their body being unable to handle it. In this life he is being affected by his past memories (developing things like him being unable to smile and living for the sake of others) and its due to his indoctrination that he is hostile to her, because he was designed to kill her. I do think that this is somewhat a plothole since later it reveals their past where he spared her life and then traveled with her for some time, with them being somewhat friendly in the backstories. Although I would say this is a bit of a grey zone because of the level of indoctrination he went through, to the point where at a later point in the story it required a third party to point it out (He wanted to help someone who he considered an enemy and is worried about the enemy, but he could not see that he did not think of her as an enemy. I'm explaining that bad but its basically that his mind was set on her being the enemy and being unable to realize otherwise.)

Overall the story is pretty good, although it does have some negative attributes. The biggest issue I think for this story is the flashbacks, it would be fine if it was limited to just the core important ones but instead the author uses them somewhat frequently for some pointless things like him and the witch listening to a bard. I personally think the story would of been better if it greatly shortened the amount of time spent on backstories. The only important ones are witchs background, heros background, them meeting, then what lead to reincarnation. But like I said earlier there are extra backstories that don't feel like they add much worth. <<less

If you like romcoms then you should read this one. It’s only 2 volumes.. 4 or 4.5 for me but rated 5 only because so many give it an unwarranted bad review.

Definitely give it a try because I don’t think this deserves the hate it gets. While other romcoms drag on for ages, at least this is a quick read

Average romcom. The only thing worth remembering is the setting of a hero and a witch reincarnate in the present world.

I think I like it.

Too short, but too long.

Too long:

If this is all the author wants to tell us, I think it should have ended in Volume 1. Most parts of Volume 2 are just pain to read and completely unnecessary. At least, those I-don't-deserve-you and you-like-someone-else incidents should have ended after the soccer match when the MC cleared the misunderstanding with FMC. Gotta say, for me, he is the very first MC to handle those misunderstandings in a realistic way.

Too short:

It feels rushed. The premise is very interesting. I think there is a lot more to tell. For example, I would like to see the interaction between MC and FMC in those treatment sessions. Also, what happened to the curse of the FMC? Can it be cured? The author just left it to our imagination. I mean, when the MC and FMC talk about who outlives who in the final chapter, it looks like a big death flag to me.

to those who rated it 1* and dropping it after volume 1, my sincere condolences for missing out on a beautiful light novel.

i wont elaborate much but cactii's review echoes almost exactly how I feel about this light novel.

volume 1 is definitely the weakest. The ungodly amounts of flashbacks is definitely not necessary which made me drop a star overall. Flashbacks can get too excessive. FMC is also not likable at the start but volume 2 is a complete game changer for me. People are too fast on dropping a... more>> novel these days and its pretty sad to see good novels left out cause of people's impatience and assumptions of a series over just one volume.

FMC & MC have an insane character progression with good reasoning behind the way they act and think in volume 1 and the early parts of volume 2. Genuinely a very wholesome slice of life, romance light novel that I won't spoil too much. It is a good read for sure. Get past volume 1 and you will slowly appreciate it. <<less

I have read the full first volume and it is your typical melt-your brain opportunistic but cute love story. I would have continued reading further but the author forced a misunderstanding.

The MC at one point of time confesses to the FL and literally says "I love you", "I will be a hero only for you" blah blah blah. The next day, it is assumed that he wanted to be her friend. Either this is a translation problem but seeing that the translation has been amazing so far, I am assuming the author made a mistake. Even then, the author had to force a misunderstanding where the FL thinks that the MC wants her to be a friend and nothing more and the same with the MC.
