Six months ago, tens of thousands of black phantom towers appeared all over the world, floating above the cities. Chemists, physicists, religious people… all of them could do nothing.

Six months later, people became used to the towers and no longer paid them attention.

One day, Tang Mo saw a flying insect crash into it instead of going through it. The next day, a sharp and clear child-like voice issued an announcement to all humans.

“Ding dong! November 15th, 2017. The earth is online.”

The black tower’s three iron-clad rules:

1. Everything is explained by the black tower.

2. 6 o’clock to 18 o’clock is the game time.

3. All players, please strive to attack the tower.

This is one of my best unlimited flow novels. The writing was spectacular and instantly got u hooked and the world building and characters where just 😍.

The romance was nice and realistic enough and honestly I loved their relationship dynamic with both of them being equally strong and just being equals in the relationship. Not many novels have that since the ML usually are the dominant ones in the relationship which sometimes throws me off.

The tower bosses where just my favorite as they gave me a different outlook on characters... more>> we all know and love.

In all I recommend u give this novel a try and see if u might like it. <<less

What can I say honestly? This is magnificent. Though my brain died throughout the novel it was a good read. The characters were fleshed out, I really enjoyed the story. I just loved the silly interactions. I don't have much to say because I actually read this a while back but I just didn't write a review.

I read this story non-stop every minute I had. Lost sleep over it. Overall, I would heavily recommend it. Coming across this web novel was like diving into a heap of tr*sh and finding nice, polished copper. For a Chinese web novel, this was a 5/5. I am not expecting Pulitzer winning fiction here.

PROS

Although there were more male characters than female, women were complex in this story. There were still underlying hints of misogyny, but I had already factored that into my expectations given the toxically patriarchal nature of Chinese... more>> culture. There are 3-5 important recurring female characters that align with MC and I think the author did them justice. 3 of them were smart and independent-minded, and the other 2 were competent in their own light (though a bit shafted by the MLs' halo). Of all of them, I would say Deer (her codename) was the most fleshed out. In fact she felt more human than the MC, and I wanted to read more about her and almost wished she were the MC instead. I mean, imagine if...

Spoiler

Imagine if new MC was Deer and ML was the Russian dude who lost his wife and daughter. Their dynamic is so much more poignant. I mean, one is a mildly suicidal OP woman whose psychic powers prevent her from getting killed, and the other is a OP man who traveled halfway across the world seeking to kill her to resurrect his dead daughter.

(my head canon here on out:) Through their interactions they learn to heal on their own and find new meanings in life. She in the end martyrs herself by his hand to resurrect BYN so humanity has a chance for survival. He learns to accept the finality of his daughter's, wife's, and now Deer's deaths, and lives out the rest of his days quietly, always remembering them.

She makes a much more compelling main character, tbh.

Their background story speaks to me so much more than real MC x real ML. Things may have been different if real MC had a personality beyond "survival" and being embarrassed/annoyed by his psychic powers. Typical military-background ML was somehow mildly more interesting than MC in that department.

But it's fine since I didn't read the story for romance.

[collapse]

The different situations that the protagonists had to resolve were actually pretty interesting. If you like mystery, puzzle-solving, and detective novels, then you might find this web novel amusing. I will say though, while a lot of the puzzles were surprisingly decent, the games often fall into the trope of "forced mystery" in that a lot of the details needed for readers to reach a conclusion is hidden until the arc's late stage. So, we readers do not discover the clues in real time and cannot solve the puzzles alongside the protagonists. I did pause to try to figure out a few myself, but just treated vast majority as a light read and skimmed through things. And the novel is good for that.

The special powers and magical items in this story were actually fun to read about and appropriately used. It was rarely a giant wall of text (cough cough u know what I'm talking about).

Riddled with references to fairytales. If you like sinister/mildly offensive re-imaginations of classic Western fairytale and pop culture characters then you will find this enjoyable.

CONS

Translation. Thankfully I can read simplified Chinese to some degree. Otherwise this story might've been a bit more confusing due to bad MTL translations with minimal editing. Genders would be frequently confused, entire lines left out of the story at the end. But I just read a translation off a random site. Maybe the ones linked here are better. Maybe not.

Not focused on romance. This could be a pro or a con depending on what you are looking for. While MC x ML is canonical and sprinkled here and there, the story rarely dives into it beyond companionship and "wow they are great at teamwork." Explicitly romantic physical intimacy is described 3-5 times (?) in 230+ chapters, and only briefly. I didn't care much since I read this for the puzzle-solving, but by the end even I was like, "come on author, surely you can give us more than that?"

There are minor plot holes, continuity errors, and skimmed over details that would have fleshed out the specific arcs better. A couple of the game mechanisms (i.e. the school tutoring, food chain, or truth clock 1) were tedious to read and felt unsuited for a novel. But vast majority were interesting.

Some moments feel like all the other characters are dumbed down to make the MC shine. And some of the "light bulb moments" either feel unearned or exaggerated. My reaction at times was either "you cannot just conclude that given the provided evidence! there are so many other possibilities to consider??" or "duh, that's so obvious, it doesn't warrant praise about how smart xyz is." But honestly, the author had to be pretty dedicated to write out all these scenarios, even if they are altered versions of common games out there. So, props. <<less

So this is about suddenly going into a survival game with all humanity as its players. This had a nice storyline, although sometimes it was hard to follow the logic and rules of the games.

At some points, it did seem like it was dragged, but in most long books/series I find this issue so it's not such a big a deal.

It has romance, but its shounen ai and not yaoi as there is nothing explicit shown in the chapters for anyone expecting this.

Its not an amazing read for me, but... more>> not bad or meh either. <<less

An absolutely amazing book. It will keep you hooked till the end. At times your heart will beat so fast, not because of some lovey-dovey scene but rather from the fear that what'll happen to the MC next (even if you already know that he is the protagonist and has the protagonist halo, so he won't die).

The concept or setting of the novel is absolutely different which is refreshing. It is on the struggle that the entire human civilization have to face to continue living due to some strange apperance... more>> of the Black towers. The whole novel has different small or big game instances which are really interesting and will for sure keep you on your toes. In it, people will come and go, many will be dead and some will stay till the end but still the survivors have to continue living, for which they have to fight till there is last drop of blood left.

The BL (mature or intimacy) content in it is not that much, like few kissing and all. But! The understanding and how the relationship between the two had progressed, even during the times of danger, was really beautifully written.

The character traits of each and every character (protagonists, antagonists, support characters, and others) was well-written and distinct which gave the story a life in itself.

Overall it was worth my time. 💯 <<less

It's actually very easy to read. I understand it a lot, especially when it came to an end. I do not know if it's just me, since I tend to understand everything at the end. Back to the review, it's a very fun novel. No angsts— and made me laugh too. I'm still curious though, why did this apocalypse happen?

A pretty good story if you like both action and bl.

The only thing that irks me is the "the author has something to say" at the end of each chapter and in each of these fu wenduo calls tang mo his wife like NO PLEASE😭 but fortunately he doesn't call him that in the story.

Most people say it resembles orv but it is not true at all lmao, I guess they're saying this to invite people to read it scamming them LMFAO so if you want to read it cus... more>> of orv then I'm sorry I have bad news.

Other that this, it's actually pretty good and hilarious in certain moments, so yeah I reccomend it. <<less

A novel that made me think about human race a lot. The nature of it. The future of it. And everything that makes one a human.

I loved the MLs. Their love was so gradual but perfectly on time. Their characters were so so cool.

Honestly I don’t have the brains to understand half of the games they played and how they won. But I enjoyed celebrating each win with them.

Spoiler

Thank God they brought Fox back to life. I hated him at the start but he grew on me as the novel progressed.

[collapse]

Honestly the ending was bleak. But everything will be alright. The earth will heal if it’s people like the MLs that live on it. <<less

At first it really impressed me, I became obsessed and just wanted to read more and more, the entire plot of the games is very well done and super interesting. However, throughout the story the missions become predictable, even the most interesting ones I already knew how they would end, this bothers me a lot because what left me connected with the story was its eccentricity. And a personal point that bothered me was the MC's lack of emotional expression, he rarely showed emotion, and I always liked reading expressive... more>> and empathetic characters and his apathy bothered me a lot.
Anyway, this is a very brilliant story, every detail was very vivid and extravagant, it is a very interesting game especially the arcs and the monsters. <<less

I'm not sure where to begin in discussing how fantastic this book is. Earth Online is a plot-driven novel with comedic undertones in some scenes to lighten the mood before delivering some angst the next second. In comparison to other danmei novels, the tale and premise are quite unique.

Black towers began to appear all over the world, initially standing still and doing nothing, but after half a year, it began to speak and drew everyone into a survival game in which they must attack the tower and defeat the floors... more>> to survive and finally destroy the black tower to reclaim humanity's freedom.

Although the romance is slow and could be argued to be non-existent, you can tell how much they trust each other in the later chapters with how they've been with each other and experienced all types of tribulations and challenges.

The main character is very intelligent and calm, while the male lead is strong and stoic; you could say the former is the brains of the duo and the latter is the brawn. But that doesn't mean they don't have the other's trait; they are both very independent and witty, but they still rely on each other.

Side characters and villains deserve a standing ovation because they were all so well-written, whether they were major characters or not. They all did their part perfectly and contributed to a lot of the story's progression. And unlike the majority of the stories, this one features strong female characters rather than maiden-like ones.

Every game they played was brilliantly executed, and the story's conclusion was magnificent; without a doubt, highly recommended. <<less

Great arcs, great characters, great relationship, complex female characters, what more can I ask for. Loved that the main plot wasn't neglected- genuinely exciting. Loved that the male protagonist could keep up with the love interest. The pining, oh my god. Hit all the points.

There may be few romantic scenes, but the plot is well thought out, clever, suspenseful, perfect! The relationship between ML and MC is the best I've ever read. It develops gradually, they're partners, they respect each other, no gamesmanship or "no one touches my wife" style hatred of the neighborhood. Very good supporting characters!

Personally, I think this book was okay. I remember starting and getting semi hooked on the wonderous plot - until I got lost and turned my attention elsewhere. Don't get me wrong, I love the book - five stars. But I just wasn't all too satisfied with the lack of intimate scenes and the slow-burn romance. Throughout reading the book a second time when I picked it up back again, I was amazed by the games. Yes, they were hard to follow but I felt a sense of thrill and... more>> the urge to solve the puzzles before it was revealed in the story. The author was very creative in this aspect. The book had humour, it had mystery, it had danger. And I can assure you that reading this book is not a waste of time. Thank you to the author, to the translator, and to novel updates. <<less

The best unlimited flow BL I have read to date. Great World building and development of both main and supporting characters. MC and ML truly felt like equals which can be rather rare in BLs and both are very smart, reasonable and likeable. Very slow burn romance, but it makes sense considering the apocalyptic setting. Nonetheless, the chemistry is there throughout. The ending and explanation to how the earth went online may not have been the most well fleshed out, but that only makes a small part of the story.

I liked the characters and arcs but I felt like the story was a bit shallow even with the unholy amounds of world buiding. It felt a bit draggy in parts but overall the instances/games were very clever. It's plot heavy and romance is a not the main focus which I usually adore but I just felt like there was no progress at all? It just felt like a given all throughout the novel and it did not connect with me at all.

It’s lot of plot and light on romance, which is fine with me. At first the use of real fictional characters (ie Disney, Nintendo etc) was strange to me, but makes sense for the overall plot. The author comes up with some really complex concepts for games, the resolution of which you may have to read again to understand. This may be off putting for some, but it was a good read nonetheless.

The plot and the suspenses and all of the games were really interesting and fun. I am a sucker for things (plot points) connecting so well from the start, and this one actually does! Which is awesome!

The comedy got me wondering if I could die by a second handed embarass**ent lmao. A really nice one!

This a 4+ star but let me tell you that if you're looking for romance as the main point this is not the novel.

MC and ML don't hide their feelings (when they finally recognize each other) but it's not their main situation since they're literally in the middle of the apocalypse and everyone is literally trying to kill each other. So yeah, not a great start for some lovely moments.

There are still moments of tension and they feel a palpable attraction to each other but don't get your hopes too... more>> high. I like both MC and ML but they're focused on surviving and understanding the new situation of the world they barely have time to sleep.

If you're more into action, puzzle solving and bad*ss MC/ML then this book is good even for people who don't like bl. I was one of those who was dissppointed by the lack of more "dog food" but it doesn't make it a bad novel.

Just think of this novel of another end of the world trope with bl undertones. Also MC/ML moments makes giggle so much so I wish there were more moments of chatting and banter between them but then again people-dying-and-killing-each-other stuff kinda make it hard :v <<less
