“I can’t accept this! I can’t! Even as a ghost, I’m going to spend eternity cursing that your relationship will shatter like glass! Break apart like a pair of mandarin ducks that fly away from each other!” With such a persisting obsession, it would be difficult for the vengeful departed spirit to move on.

Ji Man had only read a light novel to pass the time, but she was unexpectedly pulled into a very strange dream. She had become the novel’s most vicious villainess.

The novel rewinds to the beginning. The villainess who had been ordered to commit su*cide reappears on stage and begins to follow the plot as she walks toward the novel’s ending once again, to a courtyard deep inside the marquis’ residence. A female lead that’s like the Holy Mother. Countless cannon fodders. The imperial family’s favor…

I spent hours and 3 days reading this novel.

There are times when I want to just stop, whether it be out of frustration or boredem, but somehow the next sentence lights the spark again.

It is a good novel with ups and downs I don't regret reading it. Maybe I'll read this again in 3-4 years when I have completely forgot about it.

I don't adore any characters in this novel but I have to admit the authors put a lot of thought into this plot unlike other Chinese authors who just... more>> make things on the whim and try to drag things out.

It looked like she planned out the whole novel before writing it. That's why you can see some foreshadowing ever since the first chapters.

And I have to praise the translator of course because whenever I wanted to drop their explanation keeps me going.

I wouldn't give this story five stars but rlly the average ratings are too low. Hmm my true rating is 4 <<less

Even though harems and concubines existed in historical times, I found the characters in the novel repulsive at first. As a result, I was surprised to find that I liked it and that it had the potential to broaden my perspective on the genre.

First and foremost, the characters, particularly the ML, are realistic. HAHAHA. I despised him, but I grew to love him gradually.

Second, both of the protagonists grew as characters.

Imagine a modern lady falling in love with a guy from a different period. While they are both citizens of... more>> the same nation, they were born and raised in separate times. To put it another way, it's a long-distance romance. I'm pleased that they could cross the bridge after repairing the gap.

Overall, I like the novel. Author and translator, thank you very much! <<less

As I read more CNs, it gets harder and harder for me to enjoy them right to the end. However, Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir keeps you interested with good pacing, plot and two main characters who I'm genuinely happy ended together.

This its a very good read if you go in wanting to read an semi historical realistic intrigue novel about backyard politics and plain political scheming with meticulous plotting where people are people and its not set in the imperial palace for a change, all the characters had their own motivations and personalities.

If you are looking for nice romance better go away, this novel will only drain you.

Man, was this novel a ride. I'm not gonna lie, I read it because I absolutely loved a fic that was based on this story so I came here with a very different idea of how the plot would develop. Lol

The FL is a very strong character, luckily because she needed to be in order to deal with all of what happened to her. Unfortunately, even though she is a modern woman, she falls into that "my husband is the only man for me and I can't live without him"... more>> mentality and ruins her life even though she had other options.

She's very smart for business and good at backyard infighting, but her sense and rationality seems to fly through the window sometimes in the most exasperating ways. She also has more of a silver finger than a golden one lol.

Don't get me wrong, by the end of the story you will inevitably end up shipping her and the ML- but he is such a shitty person that you may still feel reclutant or a little resentful.

The ML. Oh, the ML. I don't think I ever hated a ML so much as I did this one. Even by the second half of the book when his character is expanded and his motivations explored I still couldn't forgive everything he had done and continued doing to everyone around him.

Even when he already "loves her" he sees nothing wrong in making her life a living hell as long as she's still alive.

The seconary characters are very well developed and is easy to care and love them. Even the harem of the ML is beyond what you are used to read and you end up caring about all those poor women trapped there and doing their best to survive and gain a better life for themselves. <<less

Before you read this Novel, remember it is not a romance novel. Well, even though there is romance, it is not dream like romance. It is a political and dark novel.

So, why you read this novel?

Number 1 - If you are bored to death that all the FL and ML have too much easy road of success then this story is for you.

... more>> Number 2, if you like character developing

Number 3, A true patrotical Ml, full of harem but only change for Fl.

Number 4, True villainess Fl.

Number 5, ML amd FL are not op. They have their difficulties. And they tried hard and get their success.

Number 6, And I like literally the Fl. Even after went to a patrotical society, she didn't compromise. She even pointed out that Being in a love is not always protected, but it is holding hand and stand together.

Number 7, At first I don't like the Ml. For gods sake, he have a harem and too much children. But he changed. So, at the end of story I literally have mixed feelings about him.

Aboy the story - The book is divided into two part.

1st part

Spoiler

Where FL start in a Ml's harem. She tried to change the story, but at the end of book 1 she didn't change anything.

[collapse]

2nd part

Spoiler

After fleeing from the capital, she start her own business. And she single handedly (the ML helped her, but I think she would do this her own but it took time) changed a Emperor. And reunite with Ml.

[collapse]

And another thing the Translator is too good, and I suggest please read this on her website. With lively discussion amd Translator comments, you would like the story much more.

I literally hate, the above comments who literally dosliked the novel because of the shitty reason. Don't buy their opinion, read this Novel. Its story is unique and the plot development is clearly planned from the first. <<less

Fuyu Neko never fail making high quality translations. The story is move with steady fast, there no many plothole that become an eyesore. So 5 stars is for the translator and the plot of the story.

Unfortunately, ML is sucks.

Despite many reviews sharing good opinion about ML, I still can't bring myself to like this character. Any reason such as it is natural, ML need time to love the person he loathes, or ML has its own charm, I can't bring myself to swallow any of it. For me, ML's problem... more>> not on his affection toward MC. It is simply his acts & way of thinking only bring disappointment in my impression.

Fyi, I tired with over-bearing, cold, or cunning ML. I prefer realistic ML. But for this ml, can't give any positive feeling. <<less

Atypical historical romance realistic of its times. May not be generally liked by general audience due to lack of 'feel good' vibes, unflattering ML character and tons of political intrigues (don't expect any 'romantic development' between MC and ML until 3/4 of the novel where the ML starts to change)

As many would agree, the ML was a pretty detestable character when looked at with modern world views (which our MC shares as well), not to mention manipulative and fickle-minded. This would likely turn off many readers (like myself).

Yet it... more>> was very realistic that a powerful ML in such times would have to be cunning, manipulative, belittle and treat all resources (including women and children) as tools for various agendas (again, not the top character traits you want in a husband) in order to balance and survive the political struggles, the ML slowly whitens in contrast to the ex-FL blackening due to MC's actions, the author does potray that there are no good and bad characters, what was initially a kindhearted FL, would as easily become cunning and manipulative as the rest of the typical harem after her interests was threatened time and time again, losing her 'pure' devotion and love to ML.

Yet who can say that she was in the wrong to act on bettering her life since women in those times were unvalued aside from connections and dependent on men? Even when MC was rich and resourceful (having proved herself after multiple feats), her backer did not think much of her with such a cultural viewpoint.

Spoiler

but kinda unrealistic that our MC who was a modern (I assume successful) salesperson, fails to express her 'undying love' and act like it to the ML after taking over said devoted FL body to continue the act to expedite her return instead of going for revenge and 'my feelings have cooled for you' which adds on to her suspicious behaviour.

[collapse]

Author also clearly show the mess his harem with different agenda caused throughout the story and shows the growth of both MC and ML's perspective on harems. At one point, even a noble consort commented, "Why is your household courtyard matters even messier than the inner palace?"

Spoiler

At one point I was screaming for her to just run away with 2ML already. What was the point of staying with a man who could kill his own kid even after being scolded for that immoral thought by MC and manipulating the circumstances to further his own agenda?

She would have been better off with a man that would love her whole heartedly without a messy harem (2ML) with her finances to live out the rest of her life instead of trying to win the love of such a man and trying to survive the poisonous struggles when it was uncertain that she could leave this place afterwards.

[collapse]

Author also gives multiple POVs from time to time while keeping suspense of each character motives and political intrigue going in the background especially on the common troupes. The side stories also cover multiple relationships to highlight the different types of romance, which I find greatly satisfying especially for certain side characters.

Indeed, not every couple need an intense dramatic history like FL and ML, not every man has to have power and prestige nor every woman to be gentle and virtuous or smart; as long as you train your partner like MC did

love them sincerely to have a harmonious marriage.

The translator did an exceptionally great job explaining terms and references from Chinese culture, linking past chapters, also some thought provoking notes questioning the reader's invoked feelings, highlighting narrations from different POV.

Spoiler

Such as:

    • ML believing in FL despite lack of concrete evidence, meting out punishments at the whim of FL by acting pitiful and innocent (Common troupe used in many web novels) -- how it looks like from the other end with the 2FL being abused and struggling against the FL halo.
    • Misleading first impressions leading to reactions that would have otherwise gained sympathy from the truth

As a KiyanFan, I rate this a solid 4/5; I'm a fan of this, but I wouldn't reread it

    • This is not a story where the author spoils the readers
        • nope, you will be dragged on this slow-burning road where you gotta follow the MC along her journey to survive
        • When I read this, I knew that I had to finish it ASAP before my energy would run out; and by that, I meant before I would be emotionally squeezed out; sad at times, hopeful at others
STORY

    • Well-written, I wasn't confused about what was happening.
        • Anytime I was, it was more about the mystery or question that was to be revealed or solved about a character's motivation for doing something that would directly or indirectly affect MC
    • ML doesn't fall for MC right away; it is a slow but steady series of interactions that change how ML sees MC that lasts a while as you see his change in attitude.
    • There is a main story that involves the 3 princes fighting for the crown seat, and there is a spotlight for all three of them throughout the story
        • ML's place in this plot is his powerful influence, and how he choses sides and is threatened at times
        • MC's family is also involved because of her family's influence
Characters

    • MC is calm, well-spoken
        • One of the early and first things that sold me on her character was when
          Spoiler

she was getting whipped as punishment, and didn't cry/ let out a peep. She didn't let the others see her feel down

          [collapse]
        • As much as she is clever and plans counter-attacks or back-ups, she still falls and can't get out of every situation; but the way she deals with them shows her inner strength, even when others expect/want to see her fall
    • ML; of course I disliked him at first,
        • and throughout the story I grew less and more fond of him, but he has some substance to his character as well
        • you might dislikes what he thinks/does to the MC at times, as I did, but he is consistently portrayed as a level-headed man who doesn't let his emotions put himself/plans at risk
            • This is actual something MC comments on,
              Spoiler

She finds that she prefers his cold and calculating thinking compared to another character, who she may have had a crush on-though not said explicitly- who once stopped a battle to let her and the enemy pass

              [collapse]
Overall, this may be a difficult book to get through at times- though I always came back to finish, because I was always rooting for this MC I was invested in.

It isn't a game-changer, but I was surprised at how invested I became in the story and the MC

My advice is to go in with low expectations; if you don't like it, read a few more chapters then put it down. And if you like it, altogether with the pain, difficulties, and moments of peace, then it should get better from there

I finished the novel in almost one week. Overall I enjoyed it very much and the translation was also very coherent and easy to understand. I appreciate the translator's review because that is actually what convinced me to give the novel a chance. I totally agree with the translator, the story's beginning is quite boring and uninteresting to read. However, after you get through that part it's actually quite good.

This is not your typical transmigration romance novel. If you jump into the story thinking there will be romance, there aren't... more>> any and there won't. The couple doesn't have any heart-fluttering scene that will make you squeal. Their relationship develops over time. ML learns to actually appreciate and love MC and he chases after quite a while. Don't expect heavy dog food.

The story is more about drama in inner court and political struggle. The reason why I stayed for the story despite the awul ML was only the MC.

The ML also has his own inner court, therefore you will see many concubines fighting each other for his d***. If harem isn't your thing, this novel isn't for you. This ML isn't definitely one of my favorite.

What I like:

    • MC isn't too OP, but she is smart and sensible. She knows when to attack and when to retreat.
    • She doesn't fall in love with the ML immediately, in fact, it takes actually a while.
    • For once MC actually has friends and allies.
    • The story is really good and well thought out. It isn't draggy or too rushed.
What I didn't appreciate :

    • the male lead - worst of them all. (That's why I subtracted one start from the review)
    • the harem - I have gained few migraines from reading all of the fightings between the women. I am actually quite surprised that human-kind managed to reproduce at that time with so many women involved in one marriage. ML's taste in women is quite questionable.
    • Spoiler

What kind of threw me off is how ML ended his relationship with his other women. He didn't. They just died. To me, it just seemed like the MC ended up with ML because other women had died.

      [collapse]
    • Spoiler

I kinda hoped MC didn't stay with ML and went on to find a better person, but that's not possible because of HaoHao

Where do I even start with this review? It was a wild, soul sucking, anxiety-inducing ride. Let me just say, don't be put off by the tags, vague blurb, low score and bad reviews. This novel is a hidden gem but unfortunately you have to persist to the end to get to the thoroughly satisfying HEA.

True to the blurb, our heroine Ji Man gets s**ked into a light novel and possesses the body of Nie Sangyu, the apparent villainess (or 2nd FL) of the light novel. I won't rewrite another... more>> summary but even if this isn't your cup of tea, give this story a try. While I love reincarnation/transmigration novels, I don't like the ones where our FL is s**ked into a book because I'm biased (blame it on the low production value & cringiness of the drama The Romance of Tiger and Rose), this is a novel that is absolutely worthy of your time. Our heroine is not OP, but she does have enough smarts and and the occasional inherited memory to throw her own weight around. Ji Man as a character is flawed in her single-mindedness. But she is like many women today: trying to be the best partner, friend, colleague, employee, daughter, sibling and mother but being stretched too thin over the many hats she has to wear.

As for our male lead Ning Yuxuan, he's the quintessential ML: rich, handsome, strong, powerful, smart & accomplished. If the final boss of the novel is a fox, our ML is described as a nine-tailed fox and later a celestial fox due to how cunning he is. If you read other reviews, it gets very heated about him and it always amuses me how worked up people get over a fictional character. Yes, he starts out as a stud ploughing through his harem of women and making questionable decisions for hundreds of chapters but don't think our FL is twiddling her thumbs and bemoaning her fate! They say in (western) regency romances that reformed rakes make the best husbands and I'll leave it at that because I don't want to spoil the fun. Stick with him, he's worth it.

Lastly, one of the best aspects of this novel are the translations itself by FuyuNeko. It was an absolute pleasure to read! The translations are liberally scattered with translator notes, images and thought-provoking translator ramblings. My personal favourite are when I come across "In case you've forgotten..." or "In case this happened too long ago..." prompts with working links to hints in previous chapters and characters. So much like an easter egg hunt. The comments section and the fandom at fuyuneko. org is wild and honestly without it, I probably would've missed so many subtleties that made this novel amazing. It doesn't hurt that there's the occasional spoiler if you feel your poor heart can't survive to the end! Thank you so much to FuyuNeko for making this possible! <<less

DSB holds a special place in my heart. I had never once seen a novel tackle a harem setting in such a manner and have certainly enjoyed it. Both Ji Man and Marquis Moyu are much deeper characters than they appear to be but what drew me the most to this novel is the "Show Not Tell" writing style and as the novel focused a great deal on political intrigue and dealt a lot with scheming, a more thorough approach of writing the scenario would be needed to make the... more>> schemes feel truly elaborate and the author had most certainly done just so for most of the story.

What I admire the most is how the author handled Ji Man overturning her own circumstances. Most transmigration stories try to always show that there is more happening in the background as the original ~sweet mother of shoujo storyline~ unfolds these "reality checks" are not that easy to pull off. Often times, they are discarded or resolved after being used in an arc or so but what really surprised me is that for DSB, the "reality checks" had been inter-connected, as if one situation which would have a "this is life, not just some fairy tale" would eventually lead to another as a consequence. The flow of events are simply marvelous especially if you enjoy well-rounded political dramas.

Spoiler

NOTE! ENDING spoiler ahead!!! I think my only regret with this novel is that the last arc was poorly handled. I feel as if the writer had lost the energy to write in their "Show Not Tell" manner and they had traded important plot points for Ji Man to have a perfect happy ending. One really good standing fact in the storyline is that it admits that Marquis Moyu is an a**hole, not a typical domineering ML as*hole as the original novel implied but a scheming and calculative a**hole. This had been an important detail to me as often time, novels gloss over the fact of their ML's cruelty. I had admired this one for not doing such... Until the ending, at least. His actions, unfortunately, had been over-glorified in the end in favor of giving Ji Man a happy ending, which although I can understand, but still feels subpar to the very intense and serious story the author had initially put forth.

[collapse]

But all in all, this novel had been written well and both main characters' interactions with each other and even others are interesting and could even cause ripples all around. I definitely recommend reading this! <<less

This is one of my favourite historical c-novels. The author’s writing is enjoyable and the translation done by fuyuneko is fantastic.

This is not a typical historical romance, so if you come expecting the MC to be OP from the beginning and the ML to be loyal and one-hearted, then this may not be your cup of tea. However, if you enjoy reading about the fighting between women in the back courtyard with a splash of political intrigue, and an MC trying to live by her 21st century mindset in a... more>> place where women are second class citizen, then go on ahead.

The reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5 is because I felt that the second part of the book was very slow. There was a lot of focused on details that as a reader I was not very interested in. I felt that it could have been better used to develop the MC and ML’s relationship especially as the author had painted the ML as a scumbag from the get-go, but still wanted a sweet romance. <<less

I seriously messed up my sleep schedule just for this novel.

It was and will continue to be one of my best novels for a really long time.

Although the ML starts off as the typical male chauvinist (extremely unlikeable), he changes a lot as the story progresses.

Spoiler

The romance may have been slow, they may have misunderstood each other along the line and even separated at a point. The ML really did love her albeit not from the onset, but then understand that there was a limit to what he could do, he wasn't a god. He couldn't do everything for her or rescue her at any time. Some readers fail/failed to understand that. Bear in mind, this was ancient times, you can't be careless or show weakness or it could be used against you.

I'm not saying that all his actions were completely understandable and his past deeds could be wiped off clean because he changed... but then he did try his best later on.

The MC was the strong type, and I mean mentally. I definitely would NEVER have been able to pull off the things that she did. She was cool, not perfect, had flaws and made mistakes.

Spoiler

Like with her business getting exposed.

This is a story that is understandably going to be either loved or hated, but it's definitely a hidden gem among the thousands of web novels out there that I definitely recommend anyone interested in reading a story that requires a bit more attention. To put it bluntly, The Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir is a novel that doesn't sugarcoat majority of the events as you would see in many web novels of this genre, and will show the cruel and more realistic cause-and-effect of the actions of a protagonist's... more>> involvement in changing the predestined story that they've intruded upon. Additionally, the reader will not be omnipotent and will only be given information based on the main protagonist's point-of-view, which will require the readers to think more about the reasoning behind other character's actions and mannerism rather than being spoonfed everything.

I'll break down my review as best as I can below:

Story/Plot - 5/5

Spoiler

The main protagonist, Ji Man (JM), is forcefully thrown into this fantasy world of a web novel that they were reading initially before they fell asleep. The plot starts off like your typical female lead transmigration stories, fulfill the regretful dying will of the former owner of the body. The protagonist's point-of-view and a brief interaction with the original body owner, Nie Sangyu (NS), portrays the typical trope of how the transmigrator must repair and rekindle a broken relationship in order for the protagonist to return to their world. However, as you progress through the story, the protagonist finds out that Nie Sangyu's wish is far more simple and pure, she simply wanted the male lead, Ning Yuxuan (NY), to wear the cloak that she embroidered. This embroidered cloak was something that Nie Sangyu arduously worked on for months, to the point where she got sick at some point and continued to work through nights to complete so the male lead could wear it.

Additionally, there's the chaotic and formidable influences of the fictional world that the protagonist must adapt to and face that further complicates the plot. There's the social norms that reflect the patriarchal society of ancient China that benefited and empowered men over women along with its complicated and venomous politics in both the harems, royalty, and the government. Within the short duration of the story, the throne changes its owner about 4-5 times, with the aftermath leaving behind a young emperor who will inevitably be a puppet figurehead who is portrayed as someone who has developed into a better emperor through the influences of the Ning clan (i.e. Male Lead and Second Male Lead).

Overall, the author did a stellar job in portraying the less than glamorous life of ancient Chinese life. The tribulations that the protagonist, Ji Man, faces throughout the story is truly enormous and I could even say borders the hard tasks a typical hero of ancient mythology would have to take to become a legendary figure written down in history to forever be remembered for their achievements. Furthermore, much like how the author does not portray ancient China in a sugarcoated lens, they also show the aftereffects of a transmigrator's actions that causes numerous changes in the original story. For instance, all that beauty & business expertise of a modern-life transmigrator allows the protagonist to earn a lot of money along with dire consequences. In similar web novels, the transmigrator makes huge profits but usually little to no repercussions for making an impact in their fantasy worlds. However, this story's consequences for the protagonist making money via their modern-day knowledge is the root cause of how they cause the entire extermination of their family bloodline (The Nie clan). It's said by Ning Mijing, Second Male Lead, that her business was just an excuse that the Second Prince needed to get rid of her clan, but this is based on what the other characters shared with the protagonist.

Overall, the story is very complex if you step back and consider that everything you're given in detail is based on the limited point-of-view of our protagonist, who has had lapses in their judgement many times throughout the story even though she's had her shining moments of wisdom as well. Every action and inaction led to these tragedies and tribulations.

Characters - 5/5

Spoiler

It can be argued that the characters are what really drives the plot/storyline. That sometimes, the characters are the plot. Well, I have to agree for The Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir as you take on the limited first person point-of-view of our protagonist, Ji Man. Through her point of view, you can see internally much of her many strengths as well as her many weaknesses. It's what truly makes reading this story into an inevitable marathon (if you have enough time to binge read). It's because our protagonist is flawed, and we can only see the other characters through this limited point-of-view, that we can kind of truly immerse ourselves into the story. As you read through it, you can see that every character is flawed, and come to dislike some and like some as you would in real life. It's these believable characters that further supplements the story into another level that goes beyond your typical fan fiction styled novels where you get your typical Mary/Gary Sue who are invincible.

I will admit that in certain points in the novel, these characters do embody the almost perfect Mary/Gary Sue, especially the Ning Yuxuan, Male Lead, like when they are almost perfect in their planning and always gets what they want in the end-- but it can be pardoned I feel, since we're only limited to the point-of-view of our uninterested protagonist, Ji Man, who for the most part is oblivious to the background scheming and plotting that are done by the various characters in this complex ecosystem.

Essentially, the author's choice of a limited first person point-of-view saves them from the usual plot holes and flaws in a story, as it can be easily argued that this is mainly due to the lack of perception/awareness of the main protagonist, who doesn't catch certain things that we might usually get as a reader from other types of stories.

The ending speaks of a history being written down of the two legendary Ning members (First and Second Male Lead), as well as the loving and almost mystical wife of the Marquis Moyu (Our Protagonist). This is to be assumed to be from a narrator's perspective which should be more omniscient (although not absolute) compared to our usual limited perspective via Ji Man. This is what the majority was led to believe of these legendary characters. It could be argued that as winners in the long game of political chess, they were also the ones who wrote the history (manipulated what the public and historical documents would portray them as).

I will go into one aspect about the most hated and controversial character in this story (based on other reviews). Marquis Moyu, or Ning Yuxuan (the Male Lead), is definitely an extreme character when you read through the first book. As a reader from a modern world, you can see how unreasonable and terrible he is-- Much like how Ji Man sees in her own perspective as a modern working woman from China. Understandably, the social norms and perception of what's right/wrong is different in modern China as compared to many Western countries. This is something the reader should keep in mind, as it's very common I feel that every male lead from Ancient China seems to have this abusive/possessive nature that seems to almost be portrayed as the ideal male form for that setting.

I'm no expert in the Chinese culture outside of what I read in the web novels, but it's safe to say that whatever the case may be-- the author did a stellar job in crafting their flawed characters even in the Male Lead. In my opinion, it's because of the talented writer that the reader can feel such emotions for certain characters such as sadness, happiness, anger, and even loathing of a certain fictional character. In movies and TV shows, we see such hateful characters, and we believe it's because the actor/actress is truly skilled in their craft and praise the writers and director for this type of character that can evoke such emotions. I feel the credit must be given to the talent writer and the amazing translator for portraying these characters who can be liked, disliked for whatever reasons a reader may have.

Lastly, it seems to be a common issue with the author where they portray this antagonist who seems to be very formidable, but suddenly the same intellectual who was able to orchestrate and scheme seemed to let their guard down so much to the point that they would almost seem like they were drunk/drugged and had their mental capacity cut in half for parts of the novels. Of course, this is only in the limited first-person perspective of our main protagonist so it's very possible that's what Ji Man perceived even though the antagonists were truly formidable to the very end. Perhaps Ning Yuxuan was simply too great at what he does and was able to make his opponents seem like cannon-fodder. Either way, it didn't really affect the overall enjoyment of the read as I'm sure no one wants to read about the protagonist and her allies suffering and unable to retaliate for long periods of time.

Setting - 4/5

Spoiler

I think the weakest aspect in The Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir, is inevitably the setting. While I do understand the author's reasoning for keeping the reader informed of the many politics/plotting/characters/dialogue/interactions/etc., the world-building aspect felt somewhat weak. It could be said that this novel was written perfectly for a TV series where it has select number of sets that the characters frequently appear in, but as a novel it failed to captivate me in this fantasy world that didn't tell me much outside of the characters' lives. Sure, the side-stories did definitely paint a wider picture and was enjoyable to read, but I honestly wanted to read more about how this world was different, like when Ji Man was acting as Haohao's (First Son) teacher -- This was a possible time to give a small explanation about the world, the dynasty, or anything else that the reader wasn't aware of-- since understandably we were looking through the limited first-person perspective of our protagonist the entire time.

Although the author's use of time skips were well utilized for the plot/story and the length of the overall story so it didn't feel dragged on-- I feel the author could have given us some fillers to give us some 'breathing/relaxation' parts between the constant action we were given. I do know that the actions we kept getting is what kept us hooked, but some bits of 'calm before the storm' could have been implemented better I feel, and world-building along with characters going out on unplanned outings/talk could have been built to expand upon the already interesting characters that we only got to see more of in those short stories.

Translation - 5/5 (Not included in the overall rating)

Spoiler

The reason why Translations are not part of the overall rating is because it's part of the NU policies for reviews (where translation ratings do not directly impact the actual book).

I still wanted to leave translations to its own section because I feel it's one of the major parts on why the read was so enjoyable. The translator involved in this work did an amazing work, and perhaps their own translation/editing/writing is what made the author's writing look so great overall. Without a talented translator, no matter how great the writing is for a story -- it might seem like a mediocre novel.

Thankfully, this story had a dedicated translator who obviously is a veteran and skilled at what they do-- and they also have passion for the work as you can tell in their translator's notes that they do really think about the content. I did read their comments every once in a while, but I decided to skip them to try and get my own interpretation of the novel, but the parts I did read, I do believe the comments did supplement the novel. Furthermore, the translator has a trait that many translators and translation groups seem to lack -- dedication. Without dedication we could have ended up with a novel that gets abandoned part way through which is probably the worst feeling for any fans of a series.

Overall, the translation content is very fluid, has minor errors but are mostly things that can be overlooked, and does not ruin the actual story or the dialogue. The annotations in between texts to explain the poems that are referenced and various other pop cultural references that someone like myself couldn't possibly know of was something I really appreciated while reading it.

Concluding Thoughts:

Honestly, I really enjoyed this story and read it to completion. I truly appreciate the author and the translator's hard work, and can only wish that they dragged on the 'epilogue' a bit, so the reader can stick around with the characters longer after all the tribulations they've overcome.
Spoiler

I truly do hope that Ji Man had an amazing and fulfilling life in the novel world, and can wake up from her comatose state in real life and live that part of her life in happiness as well with all the life lessons she must have learned from that world.

I always liked Transmigration and Isekai novels because it's usually about someone from a time/setting that's more relatable to our current lives before they're transported into a fictional and fantasy world. Because really, why do we read fictional novels? I believe it's because a reader wants to experience and see a different world from their reality and escape from their mundane lives filled with routines and social norms. However, the Transmigration/Isekai genre as a whole usually doesn't go into specifics of how the transmigrator/reincarnator essentially dies/abandons their former real selves for an ideal form. The Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir is an exceptional novel I feel, that really makes me think about this topic more as the main protagonist continues to struggle between their real life and their novel life. Without spoiling what's confirmed in the Author's Notes and in the side stories, the author and the translator does a really great job in portraying this idea of fantasy vs reality through our main protagonist that we follow for the entirety of this journey.

I usually don't have deep thoughts once I've completed a WN series, but The Dreamer in the Spring Boudoir is a fantastic read that I highly recommend to any reader who's willing to read through the entirety of the novel. Without reading majority of the content, it's impossible to see the everything brought together. While I do admit that there's some flaws in the storytelling, I think it's overshadowed by the author and the translator's amazing quality of work overall.

I truly have to thank the translator's team (assuming they had an editor since their writing was overall above the usual standards we get in translations) for sharing with us readers this hidden gem of a web novel. <<less

It was really good. But I decided to stop reading it. One of the main reasons is I somewhat already know what will happen and the other reason is I find the other concubines too annoying to read about. The good thing about this story is it's kinda actually realistic especially if you think that it's in the ancient period where polygamy is allowed and a woman there is seen as someone who should rely on their husband, be loyal, be faithful and understanding and should not meddle in political... more>> schemes or be engaged in doing business. If you think about it you cannot blame the ML about his behavior in the first part of the novel especially because he lived in that era and was raised there. He does not think like us, modern people. Maybe that is one of the reasons why the novel is rated as 4.0/5.0 here in nu. Women in that era are kind of easily discarded. Which I find kind of interesting to read. So just like the author recommends you should not think of the ML in the first half of the novel. I just kind of feel sad since I didn't get to know how the MC and ML were able to develop their feelings. (I stopped reading lol)

PS: They are not perfect people they also make mistakes and that is normal. Which I also love about the novel since most of the novels I read are omnipotent MC that never fails which is sometimes unbelievable. <<less

I just read 200 chapters over the weekend. The translation of this is very good and I really appreciate the notes that the translator provided. I'm not familiar with these types of stories/ancient China setting. It's so addictive. It's like reading the "bachelor" for ancient times.

I appreciate that the main character isn't a total idiot and she's also not some genius, but she is smart. She's trying to survive. The harem is so crazy makes me wonder isn't it better to just be a commoner than to live with a... more>> bunch of snakes that would rip you apart as soon as you show some weakness? <<less
