His Majesty hits his head and upon waking finds that everything around him has become peculiar.

His dignified and virtuous empress is still dignified and virtuous, but she’s taller than His Majesty by half a head.

His surpassingly gorgeous favorite consort is still surpassingly gorgeous, but her dancing has an unshakeable air of square dance.

His utterly loyal commander of the guard is still utterly loyal, but he keeps trying to crawl into His Majesty’s bed for a heart-to-heart.

His burningly ambitious younger brother is still burningly ambitious, but his aim is no longer His Majesty’s throne, but a chance to spend some quality time with His Majesty.

His Majesty senses ill will from the whole world.

This is a story I read on impulse, finished the first available chapters in one sitting, and patiently waited for the rest until it was over.

Worth it, definitely worth it. The plot is so good, the worldbuilding top-notch, and the characters well written.

I love this author's work. Their MCs are always strong and the relationship with the MLs touching. This MC emperor is wise, selfless, and pure; the ML is strong and devoted. One caveat, this novel starts off strong but I think the twist weakens the message, and there were other ways to have a HE.

The part where the emperor realizes he's living in a false world is one of the most touching sections. The ML falls in love with the MC even though he thinks the MC is an NPC. It's because the MC is so real to him and lovely that he later has sympathy for other NPCs in the world. That's whole theme of their love story! Also, the MC fails the "are you the doctor in the real world" test, and it doesn't make sense to have him later become the doctor.

characters:

mc: emperor jingren

ml: empress

... more>> summary:

MC is the emperor who wakes up from a coma and notices that the empress looks different from how he remembers her but he cannot put a finger on it. he thinks the strangeness is just memory loss from the coma and shrugs it off. but MC finds some of the people around him are also being a bit strange. generals, eunuchs, concubines, even his own blood related brother, are now scrambling at his feet to confess their love and fighting each other to win his favor. when MC finds out that the empress is actually male (!!), he takes it upon himself to investigate the matter once and for all...

thoughts:

crossdressing macho man top acting like a dainty little lady but is secretly op x too smart for his own good bottom emperor who only shows his cute side to one person ever SIGN ME THE f*ck UPPP!! this story was so cute and super enjoyable and the suspense was really well done.

Spoiler

the whole 'empress being a guy is broad daylight and no one notices' shtick was funny as hell. when the empress looks like a man, feels like a man, smells like a man (maybe), acts like a man (sometimes) why is no one asking questions?? and why is emperor jingren the only person noticing it??

i guessed that this was a transmigration novel but took a while to realize emperor jingren was actually an npc!! its a neat spin on the transmigration trope when the main character is kept in the dark and has to make sense of things with very limited info. emperor jingrens narration and inner monologue was really good because its both hilatious at times and surprisingly introspective other times. the system muddying his memories was a nice touch and really drives the uncanny valley feeling across.

[collapse]

i personally thought the romance couldve been more fleshed out. there wasnt a lot of sparks flying before they were jumping on each other like dogs in heat. but the couple is so sweet and so devoted to each other that I can overlook the weak start to their relationship.

Spoiler

the way shen zhiwei couldnt stop referring himself with the imperial pronoun in the real world is sooo cute and even more so when yun ruifeng endulges him by calling him 'your majesty' and himself 'your subject wife' in private. shen zhiwei had spent some of the most formative years of his life as the emperor and so its understandable that hes still immersed in that role. and its nice that he was able to return to that world and see old friends and the impact of his legacy. it really drives the point that the simulation may all be computer data but the human essence is still there.

One of the best translators I've seen. I enjoyed this wild ride (almost couldn't believe it's written in 2016). MC is one of the most wide awake characters I've ever seen with impeccable common sense to override all the other characters. He even stuns them.

I love how he barrels over situations with his good logic. There's only 1 main CP in this story despite it looking like many people vying for MC's affections. The rest really don't even come close.

Other than the ML, there's no major side characters but some notable ones included:

Su Huailing, the golden child and Commander Jing (so stoic). They made an almost comedic duo. And I loved how realistic MC was to put SHL's "good fortune" to use by putting her with the embroidered guards.

This story initially looked like as a lighthearted comedy, yet it quickly revealed itself to be a beautiful, insightful tragedy. The translator E. Danglars should be commended for their fantastic prose.

The emperor was one of the most self-aware and enlightened characters I've ever seen. He is fully aware of his position in society, its implications, and the restrictions he has to operate under. He fully understands the difference between himself as a person and himself as a symbol. He binds himself with law and etiquete, yet isn't rigid or... more>> blind to what happends around. The synopsis was what drew me in, but I didn't expect to like the main characters so much!

The MC is probably my most favourite emperor character that I've read. His level-headedness and sense of duty to his nation and people really drew me in. He was a great and wise ruler.

Spoiler

Even when his insights and investigation eventually led him to discover the truth, he never gave up on himself and his people. So what if the world around them may not be real? He still hurt, he still felt, and so did the others. Even when given the option to leave and see the ML earlier, he put aside his personal wants to ensure the people of this world would live in peace after he was gone.

[collapse]

Of the novels I've read so far where the MC is an emperor/transmigrate as one (which isn't many to be fair), a lot seem almost like figure heads, enjoying the luxuries this position offered but none of the hard work, leaving the responsibilities and decision making to their ML. Even if the novel told us that enjoying all the benefits without lifting a finger was great! Amazing! These emperors honestly felt like they had zero power at all. Cause I'm sure that if they made an order, the first person their subordinates looked to wouldn't be them, but their ML. I guess I just like that this MC felt like a real emperor with all its ups and its downs.

And maybe some would find the emperor overly serious? But I liked that his character stayed true to himself. He was principled, he was a workaholic, and even with the ML, his personality didn't deviate so far. Though he was a little more relaxed and sometimes playful with his loved one, he didn't suddenly act out of character. His core remained the same.

As for the ML, the thing that struck me most deeply was the crossdressing with female clothing.

It was so hilarious that even when he was built like a man, sounded like a man, and sometimes dressed like a man, everyone was so blind to his actual gender and were just so convinced that he was a woman. I love how devoted and protective he was towards the the emperor, but I also loved how he wasn't bothered at all at having to fill the female role he was assigned when inside the game world.

While it's not the first novel I've read where the top crossdressed (tho I can only think of 1 other novel at the moment), I still enjoy how despite the ridiculousness ML felt, he went along with his role and the author didn't feel the need to make the ML overly assert his dominance as the "manly manly big top" on the MC and the readers in some way for having to wear female clothing.

The novel didn't flesh out the ML as much as the MC but one thing I notice was how supportive the ML was. When the emperor had to work late into the night yet get up early for morning court, he didn't try to stop the emperor. Instead, he made sure he was as well rested as possible and kept him active with exercise. He understood how much fulfilling his duties as the emperor meant to the MC, and quietly took care of him.

All in all, I really recommend this novel. The story was good and main characters are cute. <<less

I don't understand why many people doesn't rate this a 5. I think it was very well written and the pacing was logical.

MC is a very responsible emperor. He really acted like a real emperor I got confused if he should be the gong instead 😂 He's not really a typical shou that either acts charming, soft or sassy. His character setting made me feel that he could be a dependable and responsible husband, the type that makes me feel secured.

On the other hand, ML is portrayed as this dignified... more>> and very supportive empress to MC, but he's a big strong man in women's clothes 😂😂 Even when later he got to wear men's clothes, everyone still see him as a girl 😂😂 It's just too funny! But ML took it to stride, he was very chill, although questioning the people's eyesight. He's very caring of the MC and could be a shou, if you squint very hard 😅

Truly, it would not be weird if the CP is a switch, well for me 😅 <<less

An emperor slowly realizes that he's surrounded by transmigrators playing a game where victory is seducing him and that even his beloved empire's history is hazy and fictional. But despite being at the mercy of higher powers, it also becomes clear that his empire is a living world in its own right that can't simply be dismissed as only a fictional dream.

What a great premise, right?

Too bad this novel completely wastes it!

Even with your brain turned off, it's a mediocre read. The CP is bland, the plot feels like nothing... more>> is happening, most of the side characters might as well not exist and even those who are important feel underbaked, the plot twists are so poorly foreshadowed and abruptly introduced that the author might as well be hitting you with a wet noodle...

And if you do have any extra brainpower to go "wtf" when you read this novel, these plot twists make zero Watsonian sense and zero Doylist sense!

Spoiler

Why did the ML and the developers search for the missing human doctor by making a fake seduction game with real human playtesters and then also send in the ML to seduce the emperor? That's way too drastic a way to escape "corporate espionage"! And this also ruins the detail about the ML being the Empress because he was the only one humble enough to begin without advantages, thus getting the highest title as his innate advantage--but since he's working with the developers, he can just get whatever position is the most convenient for him.

Why is there an in-game item that uploads AI to the internet in a VR dating sim game? It would be one thing the doctor was just a maniac, but this seems to have gone completely unquestioned by everyone in the know.

And worst of all... why, after hundreds of words contemplating the worth of NPCs, after explicitly failing a "are you the doctor" test, is it revealed that the NPC MC was actually the doctor and thus a real boy all along!? Just because the author wants a Happy Ending, doesn't mean she has to ruin the theme about the importance of the NPCs by turning the only """NPC""" who matters into a PC.

[collapse]

The best I can say about this is that the translation is good and nothing about the story is offensive beyond just being badly written. <<less

Cyan wings is quickly becoming my favorite author. The main couple are unbearably cute, sweet and funny. Truly rooting for the couple to succeed all the way through. Principled characters who love and respect each other is my favorite trope, which this had in spades.

Cyan Wings is my favorite author. I like the couple in this one more than Eye Seeing Dog but I don’t like the MC as much as her other novels.

MC here is a brainiac! Too serious! Even at the end, he doesn’t really get too playful? I do love the extras as they act both like newlyweds and old married couple 😂. More fun and teasing but still a little too serious.

... more>> I love the ML here but I feel the relationship development is a little subpar.

First Cyan Wings’ novel I read that has a side couple! They don’t get any development screen time but I like Jing Xixian a lot.

The palace and politics intrigue aren’t my things. I just want romance 😂 but MC is too burden by responsibility to truly let loose. It makes sense and I appreciate the dose of practicality!

Short, enjoyable, read! Comedic undertones. Sometimes it’s a little dragged on but it’s not bad. I like the couple dynamic more the Eye Seeing Dog but nothing beats Devil Venerable Also Wants To Know! <<less

3, 5/5 and too lazy to write a detailled review so i'll mention the things I didn't like.

-MC and ML's relationship feels rushed and tad superficial. We dont know when or why exactly the ML fell in love with the MC. There's no "ooh he's starting to get feels~" moment, just "okay there's some fondness- oh they're f*cking. Okay." I doesn't help that I had a hard time grasping the ML's personality.

-I wish a bit more was done with the other 'transmigrators'. They're kinda here, hanging in the background but... more>> don't do anything important. Reading the summary, I thought they were all gonna fight for the MC, but in reality the ML is the clear winner the entire time and the others not even trying. There's barely any jealousy from the ML. Very much a letdown.

-I did not like the extras. It really drags on and the MC comes off as a massive douche. More than that it's like the ML and MC were completely different people. Not a great honeymoon. I understand they both wanted to go back to the game and check how things progressed without them, but couldn't they transmigrate into some random couple and enjoy their time together? Although the bit with the parrot repeating the MC's moans made me laugh.

Next is spoilers:

Spoiler

The excuse used to explain why the necklace didn't react to the MC felt cheap. Wasn't the point of the item to give the doctor his memories back? But it didn't work because the doctor thought he was the NPC...? of course he'd think he's someone else since his brain would be confused after the accident, so what's the point of this necklace?? I'm sorry but that makes no sense. Plus it's not like the doctor could be anyone else other than the MC, or else there would be no happy ending.

[collapse]

Anyways, would still recommand. Just don't expect a couple with deep and complex personalities. And don't bother trying to solve the plot before the novel spells out the big reveal, there's no foreshadowing or clever writing here. You won't feel smart since the author will just tell you out right.

Good premise, but the author didn't bring it to its full potential. <<less

For the first time, the story is from the perspective of the random bystander in a novel, where nearly everyone around him has transmigrated!

Of course, this random bystander is a pretty important character – one of the main leads, the Emperor Jingren – but even he is just an NPC of the game based on a novel. This is a pretty unique take, and was quite hilarious to read knowing what we know about the transmigrators plotting around him. Especially since their goal is to make him fall in love... more>> with one of them.

The romance is a little rushed though and we don't get the reveal of why the transmigrators are all here, how they know each other and what their goal is until the last 15% of the novel. The pace and tone of the story also shift abruptly, and there's a heap of exposition towards the ending that doesn't feel quite smooth. Even so, all the loose ends do get tied up, the truths that should come to light do come to light and it is a happy ending.

It is an entertaining read all in all, and the translator has done a wonderful job as always!

This novel starts out slow and subtle, but it eventually gets going and becomes quite interesting! The minor antagonists wildin at the start is probably the least interesting part, but it gets good later. The emotions, the sacrifices, the side characters...

Watch the tags. It gets kinda deep. Psychological lol

I think the MC has an interesting personality. At first, he seems kinda bland and flat, but then you realize he's just literally doing what he's supposed to be doing. :3 He's a wise emperor, and that's pretty uncommon for shous, haha.... more>> You can call him boring, but he's supposed to be upright and noble. I also feel like his personality suits how ridiculous the rest of the world is. The contrast is more amusing.
The ML doesn't get a lot of focus initially, but you slowly get to learn more about him. Same with the MC; it's all in the small details. They're quite cute once you get to know them XD

I liked how soft, sweet, and emotional the romance was. It wasn't the most exciting or a whirlwind of drama, but I felt touched by their relationship. I also shipped 2 side characters, and I was happy to see them get together ^_^

I'm not sure how I feel about the twist, but I am very happy with the novel overall. I almost stopped reading at the start with all the clownish minor antagonists, but it was worth it in the end. <<less

I really like the MC’s emperor character. Knows what he wants, shrewd, understands his burden as an emperor but still playful enough. ML’s also pretty cool with his OP martial arts but a bit lukewarm bland. The descriptions of ML from MC’s perspective was quite funny—obviously a man’s appearance but trying to rationalise it.

The premise is interesting—from the POV of the target surrounded by transmigrators. But it just moves too slowly I can’t seem to get engaged with it. :’)
