“I treat you like I would treat this flower . Your most beautiful years are for the wine in my cup, for me to consume, for me to take.”

In order to learn the skills, to take the throne as the strongest in Wulin, and restore his reputation, Bai Tan had to use the sect’s best yao ren who was locked away for several years. He needed the yao ren’s blood for his health and to cure the poison in him. Upon seeing the yao ren’s beauty and disability, he bounded the yao ren to his side, with the intention to train the yao ren into a docile pet. He had not expected the yao ren to have an influential background and to be possessed by a demon. While he, was playing with fire.

A completely breathtaking and angsty fairytale with lots of detailed movie-like scenes. The author is great at describing - she pays attention to small things (they often carry a lot of meaning), adding layers of depth and color.

I was conquered by the fierce and wild character of Bai Tan, the human fox. Being a human with gentle appearance, born into a noble family, but taken later as a simple "tool" for double cultivation, he defends himself with everything he has - sorcery (that he learnt in secret), sharp intellect and... more>> fast legs. He's placed in a dangerous world within a ruling sect that is in fact a demonic one. And he is a small leader of this sect at the beginning of the novel, because he cold-heartedly killed the previous leader and succeeded to maintain the leadership. The story becomes more and more complicated later, when we learn that Bai Tan actually had feelings for the man he killed.

There are Buddhism themes, Arabian and Indian undertones, but it stays a great example of xianxia genre.

It's mainly a love story filled with adventures and martial struggles on the road towards understanding and appreciating someone you love. "Love is not enough" and one has to learn to respect and consider beloved as an equal.

A delicious read!

  • Rape: the main couple has a slight dubious consent at first, but no r*pe. I get that dubcon is not good either, but still. There is a mention of r*pe involving a side character, but it's not explicit.
  • Mpreg: it's depicted and handled in a quite nice way. Being a non fan of mpreg, I didn't find it a turn off for me. It's not kinky, gross or painful at all. Character stays as strong as he used to be, just a bit more careful.

This is a beautifully written novel about a young man's desperate struggle to survive after killing his master.

Because he absorbed his master's power without any formal training, he is thrust into the world of the strong while lacking experience. At the same time, MC is plagued by his inner demons as he comes to the realization that the one who he loved the most and who would help him complete his cultivation was ultimately killed by him.

As a reminder, this is a happy ending. However, the vast majority of this... more>> novel is fraught with angst and an overwhelming feel of despair.

Spoiler

When faced with his impending death, MC simply accepts it and wishes to fulfill his life's goals. However, the actions of ML only serve to hasten his demise.

If not for the fact that the ending seemed to be rushed and there were a few minor plot holes, I would have given this a 5. However, it is understandable that some original plot points may have been lost, given that the author had to undergo several rewrites due to censorship issues as well as the fact that they were arrested and sentenced to serve 4 years in the same year that this novel was written (2017). Evidently, the author has since suffered 2 su*cide attempts. ?
Spoiler

There is really no mention of the primary antagonist after a certain point and his ultimate goal was never revealed.

Additionally, it is mentioned that ML's father kidnapped someone else's wife to be his dual cultivation partner. The over 50-year old ML is mentioned to have killed his mother, but for some reason, MC happens to encounter his 15 year old half-sister at some point. Did his mother escape to have a child with someone else or something? This is never explained.

[collapse]

Overall, a very compelling read and I would highly recommend it for those who aren't turned off by some melancholy. <<less

The plot was good. The characters were pretty well written. Pretty angsty and a small part really made me cry.

Spoiler

When that girl dies to save the MC. And when the MC thinks no one awaits him home. That parts really broke my heart.

The ML is pretty strange. I don’t really like him.

Some parts were a bit to excessive described which for me was disgusting and so I had to jump over some paragraphs. And what was with that medicine? The author is strange.

Spoiler

Why the deer d**k, author? What’s with all the c*m that needs to be drinked as medicine?? Bleah.

I have some mixed fellings. <<less

Translation: 6.5/10. Decent translation quality, but some parts were confusing, especially the earlier chapters when the translators made some changes to the terminology they used. I also felt the footnotes aren't as helpful to explain certain things as they could've been. Still very appreciative of the translators' time & effort into the work - thank you!

Story: I was a bit confused about the world this author created. I thought it was the typical xianxia setting, but then you get a Persian looking yao ren with blue eyes and white... more>> hair & a blond hair green eyed youth later on & I was wondering where they heck they are geographically. Even if it's a made up place they could have explained the demographics a bit better. At chapter 50 I know I'm close to the end but just not interested in finishing this (see spoiler for reason).

The master-disciple relationship/revenge plot is fine with me. I actually don't have a lot to say about the actual story because I was so put off by the sexualization of minors. This is a recurring theme in xianxia/danmei novels & I personally really hate it. Yes, Bai Tan is technically 20 years old, but the author wrote him to look permanently like a 15 year old. He was "saved" by Wu Yanfu when he was like 10 years old & raised, along with other children, to be Concubine Mings. Basically, these kids are trained to be little s*x objects for their master's cultivation. Their master has to resist their seduction in order to level up (someone correct me if I got that wrong).

Bai Tan actually loved Wu Yanfu (prior to killing him) & Wu Yanfu also fell in love with his disciple. It's just weird that novels always have to write these underage characters being objects of lust. Some readers argue - "but in ancient times people married young." Yes... but we're no longer in ancient times & as an author of a fantasy novel it's fine to write beautiful, young sexy ass characters that are actually adults. After all, they're writing about an ML that has vines growing around his body so surely not every element of this novel is based on realism. For all the adult readers... can you all think about a 15 year old boy in your class when you were in high school? Can you imagine now, as an adult, dating that 15 year old boy? GROSSSSSSSSS!

I really enjoy reading this one. Especially when reading the fight/dancing on water in the recent 30's chapter. I forget which one specifically. It was described so beautifully and I saw everything play out in my mind. I hope we get more of this!

Spoiler

Right now, I'm just feeling so confused about Bai Tan and why he needed to kill his master when he clearly was in love with him all along! But if he did the deed while unawares then I guess that's that... and that's too bad cause now he's stuck with an undead plant zombie that is beneficial to him but is also his master in spirit. I don't know if I should categorize this as a win-win for Bai Tan or not lol considering he really liked his master's looks.

Anyway, I find this one very interesting and I hope things will get cleared up later. I just hope the MC doesn't get to suffer much more until he finds his true love! <<less
