Ukei Kaito fought a desperate struggle in order to fulfill his role as a summoned hero. He defeated the Demon Lord and saved the very world, only to meet an end filled with betrayal. The companions that he’d trusted throughout his journey betrayed him and killed him by sticking a blade through his chest.

It was then that he swore to himself.

He swore that, if given another chance, he would no longer so rigidly cling to the concept of “faith/believe.”

He swore that, if given another chance, he would dedicate himself to enacting the most atrocious act of revenge possible.

He swore that, if given another chance, he would do things right.

「I’ll kill every single last one of you… I swear it…」

And so, he died, leaving behind not but a series of menacing last words — but his story had yet to end. A voice resounded through his head and informed him that there was more to his fate than what lay beyond the grave.

TO ALL NEWCOMERS PLS READ THIS

You might find reviews on how this story is edgy and the author is spending time on useless monologue and flashbacks. So I'm here to give you a few pointers before reading this novel to save time if you think the story in not up your alley.

Well then, first of all before I go to the main point I want to explain to you what is edgy. If you check the urban dictionary it will give you something like this "something or someone trying too hard to be cool, almost to a point where it's cringe worthy". This will be very applicable to Xianxa protagonist who just simply burst every people's head if they ever bumped into him, but these days, whenever there is... more>> a story about torture, sadness or revenge, you will hear tons of people crying "edgy!". So if you ever comes across a review that screams edgy without even a constructive criticism in the novel on how it became edgy, please ignore it, because the person who made that review has a booger clogging up his brain.

Anyway, with that out of the way, let's get to the main point.

This story is about revenge, so don't expect ponies riding across rainbow towards Happyland or something then call it edgy since there wasn't what you expected. With that being said, expect tons of betrayals and rage inducing villains in the story.

The story start of when the MC died after being betrayed and given another chance by the goddess. You should probably able to imagine that since it start of right at that time, we don't have any background on who and why he was betrayed and killed, but this will be explained bit by bit by the author as the story progress in a form of flashbacks.

THIS IS A WARNING - if you are the type who thinks all flashbacks are filler episode like in naruto as well as character and world build up are just author's way to lengthen the chapters, then you can close this site and find another novel.

With the amount of people that had betrayed the MC, there's no way for all their names to be cramped in a single chapter along with all of their individual reason by doing so. Whoever does such spoonfeeding information is a failure of an author.

So anyway, this novel as I said is about revenge and torture but the MC isn't like to Xianxia protagonist who indiscriminately kills everyone cuz they have bigger dicks. MC is the type of person who holds on his vow and will never go back on his word for it, he is not a psycho killer you might be hoping for because he selects his targets. One more thing, if you ever read Sairin Yuusha and liked it, then this will be right up your alley. <<less

If there were a reason to read this it would be that it's different from other stories. Worth a look, but unworthy of praise.

This book is about monologues, torture, and selfish egoism. The author has a fetish for power tripping torture. I would actually find it bearable to read, if it weren't for all the tedious monologues and inner thoughts. The MC is basically an edgy teenager turned psycho killer, albeit for ok reasons, but just because he has a reason to go on a perpetual power trip slash revenge... more>> hunt doesn't make the story a good read. Also, I personally think the MC is going pathetically overboard and he doesn't have sufficient reason to do so. If his enemies had killed his family as well that would have worked for me. <<less

A story about a summoned hero that’s hellbent on revenge.

The MC become a big sad*st after he walk his path of revenge. You would see the MC do many kinds of torture, and how the MC somewhat enjoyed it in the process.. He is using his knowledge that he got from the tutorial mode to get even more powerfull this time around, and kill/torture all the backstabbers. Its a pretty good read if you enjoy the antihero kinds of story.

A story for edgy teenagers. It's a overused revenge trope where the MC goes back in time because he was betrayed. Now the MC is a "evil" and brainless with only the most basic emotions like hate. It's like the MC never heard the world betrayal in his entire worthless life and he goes crazy when he suddenly experiences it. The s*ave trope is really off putting too, I guess it's a must for Japanese light novels. I do not dislike this novel but it's so much like someone putting... more>> in all their pessimistic emotions into a story and forgetting about logic.

Edit:
Also all the characters on the cover look so punchable! <<less

This is something good, highly recommended!

The MC is rather sadistically good which is awesome. His vengeance is empowering him to kill his targets.

Can't wait for another carnage.

I read till the point where I just dropped it. I understood why many translators dropped it too. Someone said to give it a try it is not a filthy whore, but it is but worst it has multiple STD's (bad things) which makes you gag.

The first thing is the MC is s*upid actually strike that he oblivious and a complete dumbass. I am sorry to say this but from his flashbacks, he should know sh*t was up when he first met the demon lord as he said she saved... more>> him. That's a red flag in bright daylight if I never have seen one, to begin with.

He was betrayed and chase down. I am sorry but his experience does not match what he has shown. I was betrayed so I will go and torture people because they chase me down. No sane person would think that way. If he were insane it may be found as I understand being betrayed could make someone insane, but he is sane to me to know better.

I can say I like the other novel with the healer and stuff because he has justification for why he is like that. Drugs do sh*t to people and he has done many wrong things, but at least he is somewhat excusable but this MC is not.

He finds out that he transported to the past and punches the princess thinking he the same place dying. Doesn't make sense, I thought running away and being betrayed would make him observant, but nope. He is in the summoning chamber again and his strength is weaker yet he does not connect the dots instead takes I think 5 chapters before figuring it out pathetic.

Second, he does not try to calm down and use the situation to his advantage he goes and starts to torture and talk about everything while torturing. Now I am not sure but fighting for 4 years, being 21 (mentally), and being betrayed and chased down should at least make really mature but for him, it seems like everything went back to zero along with his stats.

He could wait and try to gain their trust along with power grinding his way to the top before turning on them, but nope he goes and torture the princess and the knights then leave them alive. Does not make sense. He tortures people in order for them to feel the pain he felt does not make sense.

He should hide and make a bunch of incidents and make it so that the people who betrayed him are chased down instead. That would be an act of more satisfying revenge.

Next, the bunny girl shows up and join why not she also wants revenge. He wants an accomplice why because of its more fun that way. Forced Harem member. Next, let's continue some more he makes her vow on a sword which makes it so that if she dies he dies and vice-versa what in the actual f*ck is he thinking. He did not learn anything in his last life. He tells his secret to her and gives her almost everything. But I stayed strong and press forward.

The breaking point to me was the second forced harem or maybe 3 forced harem member the elf/dark elf. She is not needed like the Bunny girl. Demon lord is alright and maybe the saintess since it would make sense why she attacked him. I am honestly disappointed to have wasted my time to read this mess. Do not recommend for anyone to read this mess. <<less

Grammar: 3.5/5 (formerly 4.5/5 as of ch 15)
Story: 35/5 (formerly 3/5 as of ch 17)
Writing/Translation: 3/5 (formerly 4.2/5 as of ch 15)

(Update as of Chapter 19: Thank goodness, series is back on track with the story instead of detailing simple killing as revenge. Things are starting to look good again :D)

(Update as of Chapter 17: Severe drop in quality and story. Went from a rather nice revenge story to a simple kill em all revenge story. There were nice details before that... more>> would elicit some kind of feeling, some kind of recognition that it was a revenge well done. Now it's just kinda shallow. I'll keep reading until another drop in quality or the translators give up, either way I don't hold much hope for this series getting better.)

Well, found a diamond in the rough. The story line is typical betrayal revenge, but done in a way that feels satisfying to the soul. The MC doesn't search for petty killing as a form of revenge, but the truly, deeply, burning desire to utterly destroy any semblance of life from his targets.

The grammar in particular is pretty well done from the translation group, there is a fairly good flow with wording, and phrasing that I find astounding considering it was done by a small-ish group. There are, of course, a few spots that they stumble on as far as proper wording, but it's not enough to disturb the reading experience unless you're a Grammar Nazi.

The writing and flow of the story line, although it includes some flash backs and largely boring descriptions of the world system, are fairly consistent and allow you to really get a sense of events and the proper ability to start feeling the story. No real character development has occurred yet, but the small amount that has taken place allows you to feel for the side character that gets added in. As for the MC, I find it best to imagine that he shares your own personal history to make up for the gaping hole that is his character. Maybe this will be filled in slowly as they story progresses. Maybe it will forever remain a void of any details. Either way, it doesn't hurt the story too much since I personally prefer to imagine myself in his place. <<less

Spoiler

At later chapters, it feels like it starts to lose aim and going to the direction of harem fantasy by adding a second (loli dark elf? 14 yrs old) 'revenge partner'. Will there be a 3+? Starting to suspect his old party members were all females as well (2 showed up as characters as far as I read, and like the revenge partners, they're described as beautiful/ desirable/ striking), or atleast the new party will. These might not be considered minus factors for some readers.

I was thinking of keep reading until (maybe) 4th member of the party show up and if it's a guy then it's not a harem/I stand corrected but then decided to drop it afterall after the flashback chapters about the (also loli?) demon king main love interest.

Also at some point he's no longer gleefully rampaging/he decided to 'limit' his revenge to only a few people though there are random petty killings committed (they killed a nobleborn mage because he wanted to stay in the back/wanted him and the rabbit --who are not mages and fight in melee.-- to be tanks? Somehow it becomes ' (nobles are) selfish and not caring about other people's lives').

Okay here are some inconsistencies in the story:

In his first life, he lived for 4 years before he was killed by his ex-companions.

He was betrayed and wants to appeal to everyone that he isn't a bad guy.

... more>> He wants to return to his original world because he misses his friends and families (typical s*upid naive japanese ideals).

Then he learns that he doesn't have anyone to return to on his original world. Because everyone close to him died/sacrificed due to him being summoned.

After that he manage to escape because of stroke of luck and went into hiding.

He knows that everyone he knows, companion, friend, people he saved, the church etc. Betrayed him. But he still hides and mingles in civilized cities. Why is that? He could've hide himself from the forest or find another non-hostile country if there are more or explore the world he is in. But no, he lingers in the danger and got killed in the end, because he didn't know how to live in wilderness? That's just pure bullshit. Also, when he acquired the holy sword of vengeance and swore that he would kill every last of the people who betrayed him is on the last moment of his life. So him being s*upid and killed and not choosing to flee while he still not have revenge on his mind, is all his fault to begin with, So he deserves to die and get betrayed for his foolishness and naivety.

Edited: Later in the 90's and 100's chapter. The flow of the story becomes messed up. Going sidetracked all over and making the readers confused as to what and who was talking. The author becomes lazy and haphazardly putting chapters that doesn't really matter for the story. All in all, the pacing of the story is strange. Just like other countless tr*sh Japanese novels out there, this novel too belongs to category as tr*sh.

One thing that I always notice when I read Japanese tr*sh novel is that, the world the MC is living in, seems small. About smaller the size of mercury. Why can't Japanese author expand their thinking and broaden their horizon? They are too close-minded people to disregard logic of the world they are creating and perverse their own words. That is what an incompetent person would do though. That is why I the novels I hate the most is Japanese novels, Chinese novels have more merits even though it's full of cliche but their logic and laws are mostly absolute when writing a story. Korean novels are the most novels that produce good quality story because of their impeccable use of logic and reasons behind actions. But they are tragedy loving genre people, that wants the MC to fail or seem hopeless at the end though.

The review will be updated if I decided to drop the story or feel the need to update it. <<less

Whew it's good, there's no nonsense such as 'i must bidding my time before showing my fang', pure vengeance from the start. There's no s*upid heroine with muscle brain and balon breast either. Love it.

So what if it's a girl? Author-san really shine brightly without describing how 'hot' the female is, how big and plump her breast, how tiny her waist. Definitely read this for the plot ^^

tr*sh. If this story was about dealing with feelings of revenge against an unfair world than it might have been good. Don’t be fooled by the description: Nidome no Yuusha is simply a cartoonish violence power-trip for edgy teens. "Revenge" is just a shallow excuse. Even if you’re into fetish violence / torture the incredible amount of useless filler and generic JP harem antics will burn you out.

The revenge plots are both incredibly drawn-out due to filler and unsatisfying due to how quickly the author wraps them up. A revenge... more>> plot starts, padded out with filler for many chapters, and then the execution of the revenge will play out over a few chapters in a brain dead / silly fashion. <<less

Relatively interesting twist to the "redo" genre, but not to the point where its jaw-dropping. However what made this novel worth reading so far is the vengeance aspect.
Spoiler

So far the MC makes good use of the understanding he gained of the world during the tutorial to take complete advantage over the other characters (ex. The shady dealer, princess etc.) Unlike some vengeance stories, this MC has no qualms in killing or thoroughly torturing those he has a grudge on. It's a bit similar to Shield Hero but he's definitely a lot more ruthless than the shield hero.

TL;DR at the end.

Looking through the reviews for this novel shows two things. One, it's very divisive, and two, most reviews (both positive and negative) miss what makes this novel bad.

First of all, yes, it's very edgy (or dark, or chuuni, or whatever you want to call it). The main cast of characters are simply sadistic and there are somewhat graphic depictions of torture and killing. However, this point doesn't mean the story is bad. If anything, I appreciate that this novel committed to the concept even though it will... more>> no doubt turn off many readers.

There's just not much else to this novel besides the sadistic main characters. The issue with this novel isn't with the subject matter, it's with the rest of it. To sum up, it's poorly written.

While there are teases of character depth early on, ultimately they're pretty much universally static cardboard cutouts that can be entirely described with a few words. There's no character progression to speak of, no one is particularly interesting or compelling, and other than their basic 'drive' haphazardly thrown out when first introduced there is no complexity or conflicts.

Side note - the main character in particular bothers me especially. The novel is very inconsistent in what it wants you to think he is versus what his actions show. Further, he's as dumb as a bag of rocks but made to seem cool, which just ends up being frustrating as the reader. His nonsensical actions always seem to serve some story trope, which brings me to my next point;

The story is... Honestly, I don't even know how to describe it. It's one of those novels where things just sort of happen with shaky at best explanations/buildup. It feels like the author has an idea of what they want to happen then bends the characters and story to fill that. This can be looked past if the goal is something interesting, but in Nidome no Yuusha it's typically a tired JP novel/anime trope or something cringy.

I wanted to like this novel. I really did. There's a lot of untapped potential in dark stories with anti-hero protagonists that this novel is somewhat close to developing. But the poor writing holds it back from being anything notable.

TL;DR; Sadly, the somewhat dark characters and story ends up being nothing more than a gimmick to cover up poor writing and poor [characters/plot/prose] filled with anime tropes that really do not belong here. If you're really really into novels with sadistic main characters and violence you might be able to look past the overall low quality and enjoy this, but ultimately it's plain badly written and not something I would recommend even to fans of revenge/anti-heroes. <<less

While at first reading the summary it sounded interesting, but story is just badly written. It awfully edgy. The author is overdoing it with the revenge setting. MC is more like a little kid throwing a tantrum because they bully him. He is now more like a crazy psychopath mumbling constantly about revenge. Sure they hunted him down for a year and he died in the hands of the ones he trusted, but that ain't a excuse to act like a immature and crazy person after getting a second chance... more>> at life. Is not like he was torture or went through a life full of tragedy. For a hero who experience many things and killed so many enemies, I expected him to be more rational. Also he is kinda slow. It took him like 4 chapter to only find out he return to the past. Is not a very smart MC but more a edgy teen that is filled with hatred. Very boring plot. There is no caution or does MC plan his move several step ahead. He is more like strolling around and taking his time.

His whole revenge plan is really unnecessary. I never like a MC who decide to spare his enemies, because he want to meet them in the future and make them suffer more. What kind of nonsense is that? This setting only work if MC is 100% protected by the author plotarmor. A death enemies is the best enemy. Why create more trouble for himself and leave witnesses. Plus he talk way too much and reveal all kind of things to others. He should just shut up and kill those who he hated and stop doing such s*upid things.

The most idiotic thing I have read is when someone tries to kill or rob him, he actually ask them if they are his enemies. Only then would he kill them. He really talk a lot and do s*upid things. I mean can't he just silently kill them instead wasting time causing a scene and inflicting pain on them. What's the point if he will just kill these scrubs at the end.

Is hard reading the story because every line is so edgy coming from the MC mouth. For me this novel was a waste of time. I like anti-hero story, but this one is just terribly written <<less

This novel's sole aim is for the hero to be sadistic.

The reasons are shallow, both for his enemies to betray him and viceversa, which would be fine, if he didn't have betrayed the demon lord first.

Its really weird how the hero was initially portrayed as naive and "betrayed out of nowhere" but the facts keep chaging, at some point he said he didn't know why the princess had betrayed him but a few chapters forward he dreams of one memory where says exactly why she did it. This LN is... more>> all over the place...

Spoiler

Its weird how he had a very friendly relationship with the demon lord to the point of knowing her personality, having been offered to "have half of the world if he joined her" and when he refused her... she lets him kill her so that he can return home. Right after that he is betrayed by his former companions for whatever selfish reasons they gave him and now wants revenge on everyone. I say its just his karma, he has no moral ground.

Finally a true revenge boner, his world was shit, the revelation that everything he did on his first run was for nothing, the people of this world seriously contend with those on Tate no Yuusha on being the shittiest kind of people you ever know. I ragequitted JP revenge stories after reading many that in the end the MC became a complete eunuch wimp and forgave and forgot all the sh*t the world made him feel. And this decision made me know the glorious xianxia stories where the MC has... more>> balls of steel, and his revenge involves killing everyone related and their dog and then salting the land for good measure (I'm looking at you Renegade Immortal <3).

Well, this review has gone places, but my point is: I hope that those harem and romance tags doesn't plummet this novel to hell like every other i've read before, even though that was the main reason I got to know xianxia revenge stories in first place, and I seriously hope that this MC and his yandere sidekick won't mellow down, be as ruthless as an xianxia MC, and NEVER decide to forgive forget and go the: "i won't mess with you if you don't mess with me at least 1229394949 times and kill everyone that I love and leave me as a battered sack of bruises on the sideroad" route (I'M LOOKING AT YOU TATE NO YUUSHA AND ARIFURETA!!!) <<less

A revenge story that isn't revenge... Could probably be a good story with some major rewrites but it's just not.

In the first place going back in time and taking revenge doesn't work particularly well because everything you're taking revenge for has yet to happen. He remembers being betrayed and hunted down, but he's the only one, it's a one sided revenge that's just mindless torture.

A fatal flaw with the story is a lack of setup. Spending the first few chapters setting up the revenge would have been a better choice,... more>> allowing you to connect to the MC more and understand the revenge. Instead all we get is some ramblings and curses and the knowledge that he was betrayed and stabbed in the back. We don't know how or why or by who or when or even where; it's just BAM he's back to the beginning torturing the princess and some random knights. What did the knights do? Who knows, but let's slowly torture and cripple them! What'd the princess do? Betrayed him apparently and he can see from a twitch in her eye and a movement of her mouth that she's definitely evil, because he's been in combat. You know, cause combat let's you read internal emotions.

There's just too little information given to understand why he's doing what he's doing. Why is he hellbent on slow and gruesome torture in both a physical and psychological capacity? We don't have a clue until well into the story.

If you're looking for a salty, bitter MC who hates everyone and only knows rage and fury, who only sees red and chooses to just randomly and brutally torture anyone and everyone because his feelings were hurt then this might be for you. Personally I like revenge stories with more revenge in them, not just brutal torture of people who have yet to do anything and don't understand why they're being tortured. I like when they realize they screwed up by messing with our dear MC and eat sh*t for it. <<less
