Sometime after ‘Gates’ appeared in this world, humanity was divided into two: [User] and [ordinary human beings] Lee-kyung was able to awaken into a user and choose a [Class]…but, in momentary misjudgement, chose to be a [Necromancer], the worst of all classes.

Lee-kyung, searching for the materials to evolve his skeletal servant, ‘Lackey,’ was barely able to participate in a high-level raid for [Tower of Command] Dungeon. In an accident, he falls down alone to uncover a hidden conspiracy.

Injured and desperate to survive, Lee-kyung called out to anyone…and reached a vengeful spirit. “Please, I’ll do anything….Please form a contract with me and save me!”

–-You’ll do anything?….

[Will you accept the ‘oath’ offered by ‘Seo Dawon’?] –-You’ll do your best to help me achieve my revenge. And, I will do my best to save you wherever, whenever you are in danger. Is that acceptable?

[Initiating a new contract with ‘Seo Dawon’] Junior Necromancer Choi Lee-kyung and Ranker Mage Seo Dawon’s delightful revenge play!

This is top tier. First off the translator did an amazing job. They clearly are fluent in both languages and they provide notes and really I’m not sure I have ever seen a better translation on anything.

Story is long and involved. Characters are very well developed. This is not really a dungeon story. There have been only a couple dungeons, and even now MC is pretty weak. Better then he was, but what he lacks in power he makes up in guts. He is frequently horribly hurt, he is often... more>> terrified, but he puts others ahead of himself (honestly way too much) and keeps going through the fear.

MC has undergone a lot of character development but I feel like he really deserves to start kicking bu*t by now. He has been through a lot of pain.

Romance and his relationship starts very unhealthy, and MC and ML both have issues but it gets addressed. So far MC still has too low self astern and ML still is a bit too controlling but they are both getting better- and they have had to deal with way too much.

There is some fluff, lots of teasing, and also some full on horror. You won’t be smiling all that much reading this, you will be more in suspense and want to know what’s going to happen while being afraid or feel sad for MC. At the same time low lows make the highs feel so much better.

necromancy feels like a broken class, but not broken good. Sure no other class can you do what MC does, but without a crap ton of luck MC would have died like 20 times by now. This class was not written to function. I think it’s like winning the lotto but in order to cash in the ticket you have to cut off both your hands. MC is crazy enough and desperate enough that he would do so- but no one else in their right mind would. <<less

Honestly, it's a good novel. Many leave it because the progress is slow, but I say be patient because it is worth it.

The MC never seemed particularly annoying to me, a little silly yes, but not annoying, I empathize with him a lot because of what he has been through from high school to the present, he is very human in my opinion, he has his flaws. but little by little it matures and improves.

Regarding ML... I hate him xd, although in the chapter I'm going he already had an... more>> improvement in terms of his perfectionist personality, I still don't like him
Spoiler

It is the fact that in life he was a playboy, although his relationship with MC is improving so much that you could say that it is already something healthy, I still feel that they have to fix some things

[collapse]

I really like villains, my favorite is Ryu Haerin, but I don't like her at the same time
Spoiler

Her point of view was interesting, we saw why she was like that and what her mental processing was to do what she did, although honestly her mental processing of her was complicated... the truth is that she seemed more like an obsessive yandere. Although I hate Seo Dawon, I can't blame him for Ryu Haerin's actions, although I honestly do hate that he is actually a playboy but that is something problematic for me.

[collapse]

Also the chapters are not very long so it is easier to read, I recommend it, it is one of my favorite novels now 👍 <<less

If you came into this story expecting a typical dungeon diving story with a logical, smart MC, then this story isn't for you. Most of the content revolves around the revenge, with barely any combat scenes or explanation regarding the combat abilities of the MC and his crew. You can probably tell from the other reviews, but the MC is a completely spineless coward that would flounder completely if left on his own. It fits his character yes, but it can still be aggravating to read. I also find it... more>> strange how basically every character gravitates towards the MC despite this cowardly disposition.

The plot of the novel basically consists of the MC being dragged around by every other character, while he makes 0 meaningful input. In fact, the MC pretty much has no idea what is going on in 90% of situations. What made me drop the novel was the short few chapters written from the ML's point of view, where I realised I was actually engaged with the novel for the first time since I started it. The ML is basically the foil to the MC, with a polar opposite personality. Essentially, he thinks like the average KR protagonist, which is probably why I liked his arc. At the very least, I was glad that he actually bothered getting a grasp of his situation unlike the MC. If you're like me and prefer this type of protagonist, then this novel is not for you.

I'm sure this is a decent novel that just hit the wrong demographic in me though, considering the raving reviews across the board. <<less

I totally keep up to date with the releases for this novel. And from my star rating you can guess that I am a fan of the novel already.

The plot is quite engaging and not exactly what you would expect from just the synopsis. Fyi. It's alot darker themed than one would expect there's alot of horror elements, mostly psychological but some truly graphic descriptions of mutilation and the darker side of humanity.

Overall MC suffers so much throughout the story. And anyone who just read like the first 100 or... more>> so chapters and wants to critique on how weak he is just know that you do not know all the facts to be so prejudice. Despite all his trauma he has alot of character development and growth that even helps his servants to develop.

MCs class is not a common one infact it's pretty much one of the least picked and their is not much known about the true depths of it as no one but the MC has explored the details of the class. <<less

Okay, so it's not a helpful review I just want to share what's on my mind. This is one of first proper BL novels. I found the manga first but later switched to novel. I have read to 200+ chapters but I just can't hold onto the slow burn. I want to read it all at once!! So, I'm diligently waiting for it to be translated completely and reread it!

It's a wonderful and unique story that I strongly recommend to all that are interested in this genre. I think the... more>> other reviewers have said it all. So, I'm just going to give my thanks to the author and translator for their hard work! <<less

Great novel, great translation, I've laughed and cried, and cringed with fear and disgust that all somehow make the novel all that more thrilling.

I can't say it enough 😭 read this novel

The translator is also just fantastic, there's a lot of footnotes that really clear up confusion regarding Korean culture, and plus their speculation and fansquealing at the bottom of each chapter really help make you love the characters and plot deeper if that makes any sense??? Also they just graduated grad school?? And still post chapters consistently?? A literal... more>> god. <<less

Absolutely love this novel, its very concerning yet cute at the same time I'm concerned for them and myself. Jokes aside I love how the MC feels really real, like his feelings, reactions, thoughts, it just feels very real to me and I love it. And!!! The MC and ml's development at their relationship is just <333 you can see that they really do have something for each other and the way they treat each other differently compared to the other, but they do need to talk things out and... more>> all ehe. Though a lot of very unexpected parts I did not expect to happen at all before reading this novel happened... anyways, I really recommend people to give it a try!! Seeing the MC grow and get his character development is just the best, I'm so proud at him, was getting bored at first because the explanations at the first few chapters were detailed and long but it was worth reading them all. I'm so glad I gave this a try since I loved the webtoon and now I fell inlove with the novel.

Over all I absolutely completely love this novel I cant wait to what happens in the future! <<less

Will edit this part after completing this novel in the future haha..

This is a lengthy novel, and honestly if you are not patient then you'll never see what's beyond it. I really like the world building and how the "servants" are portrayed. I like how they're all different from their previous lives and how they deal with it because after all, they're summoned through necromancy which is from a dark class (expect them all to be in a darker attitude) and the theme itself is revenge so I look forward... more>> to the face slapping in the future lol

Spoiler

No papapa as of the latest chapter. And mostly fade to black scenes according to the spoiler section haha

Anyway, thank you so much to the translator for a job well done and also the effort that goes with it hehe. Keep it up ❤️❤️❤️🥰🥰🥰 <<less

Overall the story is quite interesting. MC's personality, though occasionally frustrating, is honestly likeable. The ghosts' personalities are different and unique, fun and playful. Lackey is a great skelly boy.

The relationship between the MC and his summons are well done. There's actual formation of relationships, as well as a veil of mystery. The romance between MC and Dawoon was formed smoothly and solidly, was believable. After awhile though, their relationship starts to get a little funky.

The MC does get decently along with the ghosties, but he really only progresses with... more>> Dawoon, the others are kind of left to the side, which I feel like is a waste. They need more interaction.

The story progression was a tad slow, but I liked that, it didn't try to rush certain events. I think the only thing I disliked/skipped after the first/second time were the ghost memories; it just kind of dragged on to where it just bored me. Also it needed more time spent on leveling, it was kind of skimmed compared to other events.

Upon summoning the 4th summon, the MC starts to act unlike one would expect, kind of a sudden change. Around this part of the story weird things just start to happen.
Spoiler

The moment when the MC are supposed to view the ghosts' memories he instead starts experiencing "fictional" events rather than their memories;

[collapse]
which could be due to not wanting to be repetitive on the events; however, it just doesn't feel right.

Spoiler

Also, the moment MC gets assaulted by Koo Hui-Seo in c173, and NOTHING HAPPENS, but discomfort and anger. BUT NOTHING ELSE. It infuriated me. They, need him, sure, but like glaring and cursing doesn't help. Ahhh, the ghosties get super protective over MC, but they did absolutely nothing about it! Not even after they were able to actually be summoned.

[collapse]

Even with a lot of flaws, I still found this story enjoyable. I do still hope to read more in the future. <<less

OMG, I never see someone so simple and dull as MC. Seriously, what have he been doing in his entire life that he doesn't even know a single thing about the world around him? How can someone like him survive this long remain like that? Every time I look at him, I feel disbelief and want slap myself in the face over and over.

The MC has low self esteem and I would say shows depressive tendencies such as bringing himself low, feelings of burden to his parents and basically everyone he knows. He is also attach to Lackey who is his sole solace in his lonely path as necromancer. I find parts of story hard to read as it couses me to feel bad and lose some sleep. The story needs some trigger warning for mental health as characters inner talks are very life-like

I usually don't like reading Kr novels because they're usually very heavy when it comes to emotions and I stay away from those deep oceans. Lol.

But I got hooked with the reviews so I'm putting it on my lists and maybe I'll have the guys to read this in the future.

I'm waiting for more reviews that didn't state of deep emotional troubles that MC faces. Cause Kr nvl loves to do that very much. Specially since I saw that betrayal tag up there. It gives me goosebumps.

Though that average looking... more>> MC tag is really tugging my heartstrings. Maybe I'll read this right away. 😬 <<less

It's not for me, so I didn't rate it.

This is yoai bait first, coversations seconds and combat third. By chapter 35 we haven't yet had a combat scene with the MC. We have however, had 2 men (and 1 skeleton) attempt to flurt with him. It was much more than I initially anticipated (coming from RIM and ORV). It takes over 20 chapters to even get to the description. Short chapters combined with a lot of background information and talking means it takes a while to get anywhere.

The other reviews... more>> are high so people clearly found what they are looking for. <<less

Edit: OMG this is so embarassing I misclicked 1 star for my rating, it's supposed to be 5 stars lol

So this is one of the rare Korean BLs that are translated, and by god am I loving this one so much. The worldbuilding is quite heavy, especially in the earlier chapters. The author was really leaning towards the dungeon/system aspect I was honestly impressed. And looking at the 380+ chapters of the original and still ongoing (at the time of this review) I think that I would not be disappointed... more>> by the dungeon/system of this novel. The MC and the ML are so funny together, I was really holding my laughter reading about them bantering and just flirting with each other lol. The early chapters can be quite heavy, given that it's just exposition for quite a lot of chapters, but have faith since the tradeoff is so sweet. You can just feel the tension when you finally meet the ML and it was so satisfying. It's still very early in the story though, so I still don't know where it's gonna go next.

So let's talk about the writing itself. This was honestly really interestingly written, since the writing style changes so much throughout the 47 chapters that I've read. Of course, there's the standard novel style, but then it has forum posts, chats, live stream chats, and even news articles. It was just so fun reading about the story and the world through these different mediums. The translator is very good, I reckon the novel had a lot of slang, and they translated it perfectly. Like the translation's really good, trust me. I really really really highly recommend reading this! <<less

A tonne of information dump in the first few chapters, and I mean a tonne. The chapters are kinda short and the pace is slow. But it's super fun to read ! The MC starts out as a wimp. He has a tonne of insecurities because of his powerlessness but he is growing bit by bit. Really fun novel.

Seo Dawon pisses me off with how he treats Choi Lee-Kyung -- it's manipulative, exploitative, and downright mean. He's also a professional gaslighter. CLK is constantly shunned for not knowing anything and being inexperienced, yet whenever he attempts to understand, everyone around him shuts him out. How is he supposed to develop (emotionally, mentally, intellectually) in this environment??

The story's alright and the premise is interesting enough, but I can't stand how the MC is being treated and how he is forced into the role of a timid, clueless lackey.

3.5/5 (so far)

I like the world-building, the concept, and the mystery. Translation is also very good. The villains are also intriguing- I really want to know what the deal is with BJM. I also love the horror aspects of this novel- I love eldritch monstrosities! It's well written, and I was in on the revenge but lost interest halfway through. I also like the side characters, but after the fifth summon I also lost interest in the last two members. I think it's because it's too slow burn for... more>> my taste and the pacing drags noticeably in the flashbacks.

Spoiler

I liked the arc with RHR and KOL. I just felt that KOL was a WLW!! I also felt bad for RHR whose circumstances were bad (but also a bit of world building that shows how child rankers can be exploited) and was so unstable that she ignored KOL genuine attempts at a connection with her. It's also interesting how she believes it's her lack of status that makes her think SDW doesn't see her as attractive. I also think her insecurity reflects a bit on the main couple.

RHR was so infatuated with what SDW represents to her that she forced a fake PR relationship with SDW. CYK, only through time and effort and standing up to SDW that they get together (according to spoilers that I read). I still don't like them as a couple though.

[collapse]

The romance IMO is the weakest part of the story. I feel like it was initially going for an opposites attract thing- but their lack of communication and the unhealthy parts of their relationship isn't even entertaining- it's just frustrating!

Spoiler

Hamchi had more chemistry with Woo Ragi and Han Kiseok.

[collapse]

The MC is endearing to me and his inner dialogue is so real that it hurts fr. However, I feel like the MC takes too many Ls (which is fine) but he doesn't even gain any sense of agency 300+ chapters in. Not only do I think his companions look down on him, I don't even think that the author respects him. Not saying that kind and timid characters need to transform into someone ruthless to be "improved", but he's so weak that he can't even move the plot along by himself.

The ML is an interesting character. In fact, I usually love the cunning, possessive, and morally grey type. He also has his vulnerable and insecure moments that makes him more "real". But I can't see why anyone would be in a long-term romantic relationship with SDW even if he is handsome and high-spec. Especially CYK whose self-confidence is weakened tenfold around him. I hate how CYK loses common sense around SDW.

In the first place, SDW is supposed to be charismatic but scummy (also a character setting that I usually like) - but he's so ambiguous and frustrating that I've long forgotten the charming parts about him. His secrecy (while it has its reasons) feels like he's treating CYK as an unreliable person. It's improving so far, but it still feels like SDW cares for CYK but he never treats him like an equal. Maybe it's because CYK's POV is biased tho.

Spoiler

SDW is so calculating but he never considers the MC's dignity or health. (see: pretending CYK has a BD*M harem to drive HKS away, hiding the insomnia from CYK, etc.)

[collapse]

They're never at the same page, their personalities are incompatible, their power dynamics are complicated, and at this point I'm not even looking for a healthy relationship or good communication- I just want a reason to root for them other than they're supposed to be endgame. They have their sweet moments but they don't even have any common ground beyond the master-servant contract!

IMO it's fine to portray unhealthy relationships but I feel like there's a disconnect... I'm really not sure what makes their romance not work for me. I heard that this gets even more addressed later- I'm excited to eat my words if that's the case. This review was made in the 300th chapters so I'll probably wait for more chapters so I can binge it in one sitting. <<less

4.5/5

this was my first korean bl (unless you count orv ;)) and it did not disappoint—I want to look into more kr bl. Honestly wasn't expecting to finish it, but I'm enjoying it much more than I thought. It was strangely addictive, so I binged it over a weekend. I will say that anytime you think someone in the novel isn't gay, think again cause I swear like 90% of them are.

I like the MC and ML together, they're super cute and I love how you can see how much... more>> they care about each other even as their feelings kind of miss each other/they have misunderstandings. Also think it's cute how weak the MC is to pretty faces and how his type (SDW) never wavers. Super interested to see their relationship and the plot develop.

for a minute in the beginning I was getting slight harem vibes, which I hate, so I'm glad that was nipped in the bud (kinda).

I'm kinda confused about Bae Jaemin's character, though, like is he foolish and greedy or masterful and manipulative (I thought I had him but the backstory confused me).

Spoiler

I will say that I get annoyed at how every time MC does a Vengeful Ghost Summon or something he faints for like 20 chapters. Each time I'm just like 'okayyy, can we go back to the plot now?' also I didn't realize they were going to raise this many ghosts, are they trying to kill him?? He's just a 3-digit leveler. Tbh they can stop at Choi Kyungshik, I don't need to meet Jo Chanyeong. I feel like the more characters they add, the less they are able to be developed, also who needs 7 ghosts + Koo Huiseo??

I love this novel so far! I started over with the novel after reading the manhwa and it was definitely worth it even though I really wanted to know what happened next. Unreliable narrators are always so fun to engage with and it comes across so much more in Yikyung's 1st person POV. I also didn't expect to love the whole cast. As much as one could say the MC is s*upid, I think it's not that. You should definitely give it a try and I really like the plot!

Spoiler

I don't think he's s*upid, he's just badly affected by the summons. Think of it as a side affect of summoning too many vengeful spirits, he begins to wither into a weakened mental state, making him forget to eat and not sleep properly, it makes his emotion take over him more than his thoughts, however with his thoughts he tend to ovething. But the worst part is he doesn't even remember /know about it :' (
