“I’m… going to break you.”

His low voice grew raspy towards the end. His hand on my hip tensed and began to tremble. His deep gray eyes were overflowing with masculine arousal. Lee Kyuwol’s eyes were telling me. The gentle kiss we had just shared a moment ago was merely the beginning of his consolation.

The violent desire that had been hidden underneath his indifferent, gray eyes intensified the moment I gave him my consent, and he warned me that he would break my world. Within the murky fog of dread, I felt an overwhelming sense of relief.

“…I’d prefer that.”

When he heard my whispered reply, Lee Kyuwol raised both of his hands and ripped open my black mourning dress.

Summary: Jung Dayoung’s life has brought her nothing but pain and suffering. The product of an affair, her own mother does not acknowledge her existence. She lives like an insect: silent, hidden, and pathetic. One day, her mother announces that she is to remarry. Her new husband is none other than the father of Lee Kyuwol, the national swimming champion who brought honor to the nation when he won multiple gold medals at the Olympics. Although Kyuwol and Dayoung are the same age, they could not be more different.

As their... more>> lives are struck by tragedy, Dayoung realizes that there is a sinister darkness within the golden boy’s heart. However, instead of being repelled by it, she feels herself being drawn to him. She uses him and his body to bring relief to the overwhelming guilt and sadness plaguing her life, and he is more than willing to accommodate. In the dark world they have built together, with nothing but the moon to guide them, they drive each other down the path of madness.

Warning: PLEASE HEED THE TAGS BEFORE READING THIS NOVEL!

Review: Super duper dark. When I say this novel is dark, I mean this novel is DARK. I think out of all the books I’ve read so far, this one was the most uncomfortable to read in terms of the abuse. There is just so much abuse and darkness in this story. Not surprisingly, the FL is very depressed, and her thoughts go down a twisted path. Suffice to say, this novel is full of triggers. I would advise readers to continue with caution, and please, please, PLEASE seek help if you ever find yourself in a similar situation.

The ML is... interesting. I think the author did a lot of research when it came to this novel, and it definitely shows. Overall, I found this novel to be quite powerful. It’s a story about two damaged, twisted people who latch onto each other to survive their trauma. It feels different from any of the other novels written by Kimpa (I would argue that this is their darkest novel yet), but I found it to be an addicting read.

However, due to the various themes listed in the tags, reader discretion is advised. If you are not of age, this is NOT APPROPRIATE for you! Please do not read this if you are fainthearted. The abuse is absolutely vile and incredibly disturbing. <<less

And the most toxic couple award goes to these two! 🎉🏆 No, but in all seriousness, this has to be one of the darkest love stories I've ever read. And I absolutely loved it lol. I thrive off of toxic couples and this hit all the right spots. Which is why I'm writing my first review. Just a warning that I'm a not genius by any means and these are all my personal perceptions of the characters and story.

First off, I feel like I should say that this story is EXTREMELY... more>> dark. Like extremely. I was surprised by some of the topics the author touched on. Just make sure to read the trigger warnings. One thing that I felt was extremely impressive was the way the author managed to keep the same atmosphere throughout the entire story. Something that tends to happen with darker, psychological stories like this is that they can sometimes begin to feel ridiculous. While some of things that happened weren't necessarily 'realistic', it still didn't go too out of it's depth and every plotpoint felt like they interlinked well. This was done well via tying up loose ends and making every single event meaningful. It felt very linear I guess.

What I loved the most about the story was it's characters. They're both very complex and the way they interact with the world and with eachother is so vivid and realistic for an abusive relationship.

The main lead, Dayoung, is extremely mentally scarred from her abusive and neglectful mother, and it becomes clear throughout the story. She's depressed, she has extremely low self esteem and pretty much buries herself within 'darkness' as she calls it. I thought it was refreshing to see how self aware she is during it all as well. The author portrayed her depression really well. Dayoung pities herself, victimizes herself and constantly wishes to be the tragic heroine, while also wishing to be independent, to live up to her grandmothers expectations, to have light shone on her etc. She grew up practically functioning on shame and fear, while having no semblance of healthy support so it makes sense why she feels like this is almost how it has to be. This is also my personal opinion but I also feel like via the indirect s*xual abuse she'd endured under her mother, that she may have developed hypersexuality. I really resonated with the way her own s*xual urges and shame clashed heavily and I couldn't help but to feel terrible for her. Her emotions and thoughts are so complex and gripping, seriously well written.

And when you bring a highly narcissistic, highly achieving, highly intelligent, attractive athlete who also happens to be bankrupt of both emotions and morals into the picture, you get a relationship built on dependecy, obsession and manipulation. Kyuwol seriously resembled the devil throughout the story, feeding off of her dependency on him. Honestly, I can't really write enough about him since he is both really difficult to understand and one of the most complex male leads I've come across. I still don't really know whether he truly loves her or not, or whether it's simply obsession and a sense of ownership because so many of his actions and emotions clash. I really enjoyed his character though, he really feels omniscient and omnipotent at times. The most I can say is that he is DEFINITELY a narcissist lol.

Their relationship dynamic is so f*cking intense, it had me holding my breath. Dayoung simultaneously views Kyuwol as both her salvation and her hell, and Kyuwol doesn't even shy away from it. He's openly toxic, manipulative and just plain abusive knowing damn well that she's too far in and way too broken to save herself. He always knows exactly what to say, what to do, how to appease her and how to manipulate her back into submission. It's honestly terrifying. He plays as her dog while holding the end of the collar the entire time.

Also, shout out the translator. They did an amazing job! It seriously felt like it was professionally done.

Amazing book. If you can handle the themes and love dark romance and yandere men, please read it! <<less
