Could not get into, especially because of the wussy MC. Read the spoiler for a better idea.
Spoiler

MC is a kid living in the streets scrounging for food. He somehow sneaks out with a piece of bread from the big kids. He sees a young girl eyeing the bread. He gives her half, but for no reason she snitches on him to the other kids after she leaves. The other kids beat the MC up and are asking him where is the other half of the bread. No matter how much pain he is enduring, he does not snitch on the girl. Then again for no reason, the little girl uses a stone to smash the MC's head. Somehow the MC survives, and she tries to smash his head again, but stopped after some adults appeared. The adults noticed the bloodlust of the girl, and gave him a gun to shoot her. They told him if it was not form them, she woulld have killed him. The MC does not shoot her, so she leaves a psycho roaming the streets.

Quite good, I think some people should "read" everything said, not just skim through it. I say that because I noticed a lot of reviews on different novels rate a novel bad, one star, for reasons that are rather incorrect. In one of the earlier comments I read on this novel saying that the MC is a "p**sy" because he didn't kill a 5 year old girl that tried to kill him after he showed her kindness, at the time he is 6 years old, he has the opportunity to... more>> shoot her in the back but he doesn't considering he is leaving and will probably never see her again. Another person said about the time the vampires attack the human town and they are ordered to kill everyone, it was NOT for simply cold blooded killing, but because the vampire virus was so dangerous that if one infected person gets out to another city, that city could be destroyed from the spread vampire virus.

I think a bad review should only be written "After" reading all facts in the ark or mini ark. <<less

I have to say, this novel is much better than people rate it. This novel is mature and has graphic scenes, and if you dont want that then this is not for you!

Overall I think the novel is good and the translators have done a beautiful job on it so far. I love the steampunk cultivation wold, it is something a little different from the norm but still familiar.

The characters are well built. I think the previous reviewer who complains that the MC is a wuss because as a 5... more>> year old he doesnt mu*der another 5 year old needlessl should get his head checked out. Thus far the characters are actually believable, not caricatures, not monsters made flesh who do everything to the extreme. <<less

So i've read up till the newest chapter, and I feel a lot of the reviews are unrealistic or written by people who haven't read enough of the story to give a proper opinion (thats just my opinion of course).

Here goes:

I kind of liked the beginning of the story, it seemed like a different sort of xian xia, and I also liked that it's with vampires/dark races, and set in a post-apocalyptic world. But thats where my likes end.

The story just drags on, there could have been so many exciting... more>> developments, possible plot twists, and cool supernatural elements from the darker side of the fantasy genre. But instead we get a cookie cutter MC that no matter the odds; always comes out on top. The author seems to think that by writing "suddenly" hundreds of times in each chapters, that the story telling/combat magically gets filled with suspense and excitement. Which of course is false.

The MC has an Arch Angel of Supreme Plot Amour hovering over him all the time. And the author really wants us/me/you to know how amazing and incredible everything he does is. By using almost half of every combat chapter writing about it. The author also does the same with every female appearing in the story, and in the latest chapter; Forces a 'comment' into the middle of a paragraph/sentence. About how white a female enemy's skin is, and how full her breasts are, and that the MC actually thinks she's beautiful. While he is trying to choke her to death - why is that information necessary to write? And especially in that scenario? - Lazy writing, powertrip, and wish forfillment thats my guess.

I'm sorry to say that this is imo a missed opportunity to make something amazing and different, instead it's a typically badly written xian xia thrown into what could've been an otherwise interesting setting. <<less

The author clearly has not planned this story out. At all. He clearly is just having random ideas every 2 chapters and decides to abandon his old idea to go for his new one.

"Okay, I think I'll have my MC be trained to be some sort of special ops soldier guy. Wait, but wouldn't it be cooler if he were a vampire? Okay nevermind, he's suddenly a vampire now, and then he leaves the continent. I liked that one book with that bartender... bartenders are so cool. Why not make... more>> him a bartender in this new continent? Oh, and I'll just throw in virtual reality for some reason too because virtual reality is cool."

Clearly this author has no clue what he's doing. <<less

Now, this novel isn't all that bad. It is, in fact, one of the best novels on WW and also one of the better ones on NU. That is, until recent chapters.

Tl;dr: Starts out decent, becomes actually great and then shoots itself into the foot with a shotgun.

The characters: Most of them are just another slightly spiced up xianxia trope. You get the rich womanizer, the arrogant fatty, tomboy sword master etc. So yes, the side characters aren't that interesting. With one notable excaption: Most of them aren't bloody idiots.... more>> The main character on the other hand is actually fairly well written and without insane plot armour and has some much needed flaws. Speaking of plot armour tho... the c*ckroach. But she is a special case I will roast in the second section. Time to move on.

The world: This is probably MEN's strongest point, but also ultimately its downfall. It is a dark, almost realistic setting and is the main reason MEN is on the darker side. Guns and trucks, airships etc is the upper limit of tech shown so far and mixes fairly well with the tone. A gun can kill a cultivator, albeit only the weak ones.

The plot: Actually... solid. Until the chapters (ch 600-700). You follow a vampire human hybrid on his quest for survival and eventual world domination. Again, the premise is meh, but the execution is good so this isn't an issue. Or is it?

Because now we are getting to the reason this is rated 2 stars, and not 5 (which it could have been just as well). As the midgame approaches the setting just tears itself asunder for the sake of cheap plot points. Remember the c*ckroach, aka the girl with the plot armour of an ATG core character? Yeah.

Spoiler

This is where it gets f*cking ret*rded. She assassinates imperial squads, targets key characters multiple times and pretty much everyone hates her. She is doing this on battlefields and close to those. Wouldn't be an issue if it was a secret. But it isn't. Everyone and their f*cking grandmom knows what she is doing. By all sane standards this is high treason, which by standards of this world would end in summary execution and any affiliated faction would drop her like a hot potato. But nope... of course she gets protected, moves faster due to instinct (WTF???) and in general doesn't make sense. At all. The fact that she isn't hunted down like the mad dog she is... dafuq.

[collapse]

The infighting in the empire is so insane that this rotten carcass of a faction should not exist anymore. Period. Like, the apparent reason for mankinds continued survival is their unity. Just that the vampires alone could wipe them out and ther infighting isn't nearly as bad as this garbage.

Spoiler

This is one of the two main reasons for the bad rating. The empire is fighting a war against 4 factions that are more powerful than itself. They should not have the time and resources to waste to f*ck up each other. But they do. On an insane scale. At this point the supposed allies in your back are a bigger issue than the enemy at the front. Times two. They are assassinating potential (and almost certain) future heavenly monarchs, which by themselves can basically win a war. Reasoning? One great clan should not have more than the others. Now, find a Laplace dice (or any normal dice will do, really) and throw it 6 times. The average is a perfect flush. How often do you get it? Go figure the rest on your own.

The Bai clan gets a special mention here because they are that s*upid and obnoxious. c*ckroach escapes after attempted assassination of the MC and his group of friends. Now, what do you do in this case as the MC? You go ahead and try to squash the assassin. She runs to a Bai clan fortress and Bai Atou, a young genius of that clan, attempts to kill them all. When the Zhao clan (MC's family) comes back for justified revenge prince greentard, a heavenly monarch, protects the clan, stating that this will be sorted out later. Now, if I was any faction not named Bai I would immediately retreat from the combat zone. It was previously stated that these youngsters are a clans future, and thus nearly invaluable to them. Cue one clan assassinating almost all of yours. And then they get protected by the local supreme commander. Would you fight, knowing that your own allies want you dead? No. Why are they doing it? Because it doesn't make sense and they are all dumb f*cks. Especially prince greensun.

[collapse]

Rewards for battles are often witheld or taken away due to politics. Yes, this means the empire basically cucks all the young soliderst on their side, especially the promising ones. Goes twice if you are the MC. Imagine you win a battle, a big one at that, and quite literally saved the day. But you overdraft your energy reserves and fall into a coma as the result. What does the council of generals do? Witholds your rewards and even attempts to steal the one from a private business. Why would anyone fight for this shitshow? They are more likely to f*ck you over than your enemy. In public. It only gets worse from here on...

The next point is that the villains just go full cartoon. Remember the point of charatcers being smart? Yeah. Not anymore.

Spoiler

So, the MC is in a self caused coma, and he did a f*cking good job. Instead of trying to get the young hero back to health the clan has to assemble large swaths of its forces to prevent assassination... from his supposed allies. Why are people fighting for this garbage again? I don't know. A certain elder of a certain clan even kills the messenger who demands that the reward the MC earned himself properly previously is handed out now that he has need for it. Why? Because a mysterious faction within the empire promises him backup. Against one of the greatest powers in the empire.

Follwing this the female lead goes on a dangerous mission to get her husbando the only cure that works on him. Which is deep in the vampire territory. Plan suceeds until the end where it gets f*cked up by imperial forces which kill dozens of the empires loyal men and the caputure her. As a hostage. What do you do with hostages? You make sure they arrive more or less undamaged. They are used for trades after all. Why does this ret*rd do it? Because he needs to become a heavenly monarch for the position of marshal (instead of promoting an actually capable strategist to the position as all the monarchs we have seen so far are utterly incompetent). So he intends to do so by blackmailing the Zhao clan into giving him the art the MC cultivates. Lul. This would make him a direct enemy of two future monarchs. So, what do you do with hostages in this case? Deliver them unharmed so the trade isnt implicated? Eh, how about torturing them until their very soul sustains heavy damage and they fall into a coma?

Afterwards the MC goes to the military base to get his waifu back. And this time it is treason and people actually give a f*ck. LMAO. Treason has been constant in the last arc, and some of them were worse than what he did and done by person with not even a third of his merit. But hey, whatever is plot convenient, riiiiight?

[collapse]

Inconsistencies over inconsistencies and plot holes for the convenience of plot points. Within a hundred chapters the novel goes from good to complete and utter dogshit. I will drop it here as I see no reason to torture myself with the rest. <<less

Okay. I understand what the previous reviewer was talking about with the orgy.
Spoiler

The or*y shows up at chapter thirteen (If you don't like that type of stuff - I don't - skip it). Just skip it. The or*y is of little importance to the overall plot. I personally hate that scene and I had to stop reading, because it seemed badly done and a bit too far for my tastes.

[collapse]

Despite this I really like this story. If you don't like the mature parts, I highly recommend you skip it.

There are parts that make you cringe at times - again - it depends on your preferences.

Overall this story is fairly unique, though a bit on the dark side. The MC is a thin and underfed child in beginning. His actions do not make him a wussy. His later actions enforce my point.

Certain parts remind me of The charm of soul pets (you may not see it in the beginning), but at the same time it is completely different. At least try and I hope you don't let one bad review stop you from making your own opinions. I had a different opinion before, now I'm sort of on the limbo.

Highly recommended series. But, it has a lot of dark elements. So, age restriction is probably in need.

First off, TLed by Alyschu means that the grammar and pace is great. Now, onto the actual review.

I love the dark elements of this series, because the author is able to make the MC actually look like a villain in a world that is already very dark. The setting is great. And the concept of guns as weapons is refreshingly new in CN.

And vampires?Hell yeah to Silver!! There is obviously... more>> some back story to the MC, causing the super talented him to be robbed of it. yes, robbed of his talents. As a result, you are always drawn in to know how the author will make him an OP guy, because there actually is some logic and science involved here.

Currently, there is no romance involved. However, I am willing to bet that this has a great romance. Why? because the writer has already show great skills. Stuff that you almost never see in the opening chapters of a regulation CN appear. And for once, the MC doesn't care for women. So, if he actually will fall in love... The hype is real!!

Also, this actually seems to be written n a Western type format, so I am interested to see where it goes.

Also, there seems to be a lot of negative comments about a particular chapter containing an orgy.. Grow up. That is a single paragraph at most. And it is not even descriptive. As I mentioned, this series is mature.

This is Mango approved.

Edit: This is mainly going to be spoiler. But essentially, the writer might be losing it. I hope I am very wrong, and that this is just a phase.

Spoiler

First off, the romance. I so wish it didn't exist. So so much. Because it shouldn't. It has no reason to exist. It is not even the terrible type of lustful romance. It is just... Filler.

And the MC character. It is not changing. It is just not being handled properly. A girl tries to kill him, and he let's let live. And this happens again. And once f*cking again! It is like a c*ckroach character, and this is bad simply because the writer has no reason to let her live.

MC matures in between trainning camp from which he graduates in 18 chapter. So ignore reviews based on just 3 chapters.

MC is ruthless but not blood thirsty.

... more>> Pace is neither fast nor slow and there is growth in MC.

Setting is of war beteen two oppsite side (dark side which uses dark energy and light side which uses light energy. Fight is to take more territory for population and prosperity rather than good and evil) with sword and guns powered by cultivated energy.

+ there is no young master/noble and even in tranning camp nobles are butchered.

+good pace and setting

This is one of the most underrated novels on this site.

Some people have simply downrated it due to the starting chapters which I also admit were very boring (only contained training for the first 10-15 chapters). But after that, the pace has increased and volume 1 is nowhere good as volume 2.

I especially like the author's writing style. How he describes his world is one of the best on this site.

Some people also dropped due to the or*y that was shown but it wasn't even 2 paragraphs that were used... more>> to describe it. When you start to read a novel, you read the tags as well. It is clear that this will be a dark story. Underrating because a dark story is dark doesn't make any sense.

If you are a lover of dank themes and fantasy (vampires, werewolves, etc.) then this novel is for you. Don't miss it. <<less

Tbh, I dropped this one at first, early during the first volume as I disliked the type of story it seemed to be...

Spoiler

The idea of putting a group of ppl (especially children) in a closed area and having them fight for their lives is something I can't get a liking for... The fact that I first tried this alongside The Charm of Soul Pets probably didn't help either...

[collapse]

Gave it a second chance though and glad I did! The story can feel a bit slow to some maybe, I don't consider it to be slow, it's detailed, tbh I now consider the whole of the first volume to be the prologue, it sets the stage but can't represent the story as a whole. The author is quite good at handing out pieces of info and subtle hints, leaving you guessing for what's going to happen next or even when it'll happen, the actions of the MC is pretty much always explained while other peoples actions rarely are, this leaves you guessing for motives and true intentions. There's also a gradual and in my opinion believable growth, both with the MC and others.

MC is not a whimp like some reviewers say, he's a child at the start though, he is also not a cold hearted as*hole who wont think twice about killing someone who looks at him funnily, he's decisive when he himself thinks it's important, but also caring for those who show him good will, and hesitant to kill innocents, but if needed, he will.

I also like to think of this one as one of the least predictable stories I'm currently reading.

The story is solid. It has backstory, mystery, a clean process of growth, and what I think is a rather relatable MC.

I've read several comments deriding the MC for "cowardly behavior" but there is plenty of backstory or solid reasoning behind much of his behavior. As another reviewer said, "the problem isn't with the story- the problem's with you" if you decide to hate on the novel despite not actually reading it.

I think the novel is interesting and that while the MC is definitely powerful, he's not unreasonably so. I... more>> regard the entire first arc with the Yellow Springs and Red Scorpion as a backstory arc for the MC and I've found the arcs after that to be more like a typical fantasy novel. The novel has great translators and its a genuinely good story. I doubt that anyone who actually reads the story will hate it, at the very least. It's not quite a must try, but its a novel you might find really enjoying.

A rebuttal against the comments against the novel that didn't make sense from my perspective.

Spoiler

At the start of the novel, the MC lives in a tr*sh dump where food is scarce and even kids can kill for food. The MC finds some bread and hides, but a girl finds him and he out of compassion or kindness gives her a piece of the bread. The girl sells his location out to other kids for more of the MC's bread and takes part in brutalizing him. As the kids are on the verge of killing him a talent seeker of sorts saves the MC and gives him the chance to kill the girl.

Okay... he ends up not killing the girl and I can think of two reasons for it.

1.A continuation of his compassion from before. His home is a kid eat kid world, and MC may think that the kids' actions are normal and now that the MC is being taken away from this hell he might as well give this girl a chance to live.

2. The more likely reason is that the MC thought that showing compassion would make the talent seeker think higher upon him, since it would differentiate himself from the other denizens of the dump in what a young kid might regard as a positive way.

Another comment talked about how the MC followed orders blindly- like a soldier. Because... the MC... was a soldier at that point. Soldiers follow orders. Soldiers that don't follow orders are usually dead or traitors. Is being a soldier not enough of a reason for the MC to follow orders? Because the entire first arc revolves how the MC learns the hard way to follow orders by the letter.

Yet another comment regarded the killings of potentially innocent civilians in a vampire infested area as evil. The story clearly has a few paragraphs that actually give the reason for destroying cities that have had contact with vampires... vampires can blend into human society and some are virtually indistinguishable from humans. While it seems to be a crude solution, destroying an entire city to prevent a vampire outbreak has reasoning behind it.

I really don’t understand people rating this 1 stars. I mean, 1 stars should be those beta MCs type, an overly used plot, plot-hole covered, unreadable grammar, villain are brain dead, and so on, right?

This novel is none of that.

If you rate an MC as a pus*y for sparing a girl he would probably never meet again, and therefore 1 star worth of a sh*t stiry, then there’s something wrong with you not the story.

In fact, that decision of his differentiated him as a character. He grew up in dog-eat-dog-world,... more>> but he was not a dog and retained his compassion. This contrast highlighted how he will be different from the dumpster he came from.

The plot here was dark to say the least, and author balances it with MC’s character. Afterall, just dark after dark will be too bland. Now, if that’s what you’re looking for, this novel is not for you, but please do not impose.

I love stories like this where author do not get too caught up by his own plot, and the characters remain humane.

Translators, thank you very much for making this available to us! It’s one of the novels I look forward to read everyday! <<less

(v2c35) So far, Monarch of Evernight is an incredible story. It's a bit dark, but the protagonist does everything he needs to do to live his life according to his principles. He has a very human personality despite being able to be ruthless when he needs to. It's also a very refreshing setting, in an apocalyptic, steampunk world. Alyschu's team is still doing top-quality translation, and the English portrays the original meanings of the work very well. All in all, a fantastic read for anyone interested in gunfights and... more>> fantasy.

(v3c88) UPDATE: Okay, I was busy with school for a year or two, but coming back to tens of pages and pages of updates speaks for the constant and insane speed with which chapters are churned out. Still very interesting, but it's gonna take me a while to catch up. So far the story is progressing well, but I really miss some of the characters that were introduced in the beginning. Although it seems like the author wants to have some kind of grand reveal later, some characters almost completely disappear for huge periods of time. I suppose it's accurate according to the plot line, but I just miss them, haha. Anyways, still a great read. <<less

Overall this story is very promising, the intro volume has set down a solid foundation with a great backstory for the MC. The pacing is extremely fast but it still covers enough details and does not feel rushed.

This story has been fairly gruesome so far, it is very descriptive and that probably made people rate it 1 star, it has an r-15 tag but it should probably be 18 due to the imagery.

The story really is quite brutal, if you are squeamish it may not be for you, but it... more>> is still very good. <<less

First of all 6-10 chapters is not enough to judge the direction of a novel.

Most of the low ratings were from people that barely got past the introduction of the novel, for those thinking if they should give this novel a try, ignore them. This novel is great, but it's not for pre teens and little kids, so therefore if you act like one of the above or think you're one of them don't read it. This novel cater more towards the adults as it has gore, s*x, violence, and... more>> tons and tons of action. What happened with the MC at the start does not depict or in any way show who and what the MC is, after all he was only, what 6 years old (?), when you were that age how would you act. I bet the MC at age 6 acts more mature than most of the readers giving this a one star rating.

What happens after the scene with the little girl is the MC will get picked up by the army where he is sculpted into a soldier. That is where the real story begins and where all the action is. This novel is full of twists and turns which will leave you wanting more. The MC isn't some childish whining brat that throws tantrums or attempts to face slap others, he just does it naturally, by the time it's over you'll be wondering "wtf just happened". After the first twist or when he got bit is when the story gets even better. So my advice is read until the end of volume one before leaving a bad review. <<less

I'm reading both versions, from Wuxiaworld and WuxiaDream. Honestly, the M/C just has no backbone. He is nothing but a soldier who follows orders, his team feels guilty but they still end up killing men, women, children, doing whatever the captain tells them, because as a soldier, you cannot ignore the orders of your Empire.

This senseless killing is just, so idiotic. I mean, you're talking about a situation where you can even save people, but nope, Empire orders them to die, so let's just obey and pull the trigger.

I really... more>> am trying my best to stick with this, but it's become hard when you think how much of a pssy our M/C is. This kid would probably eat a bag of dog sht if his captain told him to.

The brutality of the world is just, too much. I mean, I understand, you're at war with the dark races, but to just go around killing the humans because of some idiotic stuff, like "Oh, a few people are infected, so let's round up the survivors and kill them too, because they MIGHT be infected as well. No, let's not examine them to make sure, let's just kill them because we were ordered to do so."

It's sht like this where it just screams "I CAN NOT WRITE A NOVEL." <<less
