Jiu Hui was just an ordinary garlic chive spirit. Before she left the village, the other yaos in the village told her that some humans were racist, so she must never let others know that she was a yao.

In the world of self-cultivation, there were many immortal sects. Some sects were good at refining elixirs, some were good at sword cultivation, and some were good at divination. Only the sect that Jiu Hui worshipped was not only incapable of controlling yao monsters, but also had no sense of existence in other aspects.

Jiu Hui asked her master, “What has our sect relied on for the past two thousand years?”

Her master’s expression was profound, and her gaze was distant. “It all depends on gou*.”

Gou*?
TN: MC heard the wrong word, her master’s gou is slang for outlasting others by hiding/preserving strength, her gou is for dog.

You should definitely wait for the author to finish translating, it’s worth it to read such a fluid translation! So grateful carpreads picked this up!

Plot: Simple yet intricate. Light hearted without being boring. Always a good read when Yue Xia Die Ying writes.

Our little garlic chive Jiu Hui: Ultimate con-man. Those who wish to learn the art of making a paper cut into broken bones and family debts should worship her as their master. The #1 little overlord. The true tyrant tamer/brat defeater. Who doesn’t she know? Need... more>> help burying a body? She’s got a guy. Need the eight treasures of hell? The beautiful Demon Empress Dowager will hand deliver it. In her past life, she was a mafia family head. A mobster. She brought these skills into this life as she bags and beats opponents without ever letting them know who beat them half to death. She’s also a beauty but this is just an added bonus. Those who know her call her Young Master with respect, those who love her call her little senior sister.

Our ML Zhi You: “I am little senior sister’s lackey. I wish to be a married in son-in-law. Woof.” <<less

Me: the world is cruel and unyielding : (

Me: omg new yue xia die ying novel :D

If you've read 'ascending do not disturb' (YXDY's first cultivation novel), 'I am Average and Unremarkable' follows a similar tone and even structure but with enough differences to set it apart.

Similar to her more recent works, it's overall much lighter and more comedic but without sacrificing too much depth. It pokes fun at cultivation tropes (master-discple relationships, dramatic tragic love triangles, demon-human relations) but also questions if the root of all these tropes would... more>> really be people blinded with love or just selfish people doing selfish things.

IAAAU in particular is more on the concept of sacrifice for the greater good. Is it right to ask one person to sacrifice all for the sake of the world? Is destiny fixed or can it be changed? As always, the answer lies in friendship and comaradarie. If ascending is about the relationship amongst various sects than IAAAU is more on the relationship between demons/monsters/humans.

The cast of side characters all have some level of depth and backstory. They might get introduced as tropes but as the story progresses, you get to see their emotions and they become alot more alive. Unfortunately, due to the big cast, some side characters remain very side and are more static.

MC - first impressions are she's young, cute and well-raised. She's actually a bit more cynical than she initially appears but still lively and kind. Very much for the people because she's been treated well by the people. She's not my favourite of the YXDY MCs but she's a fun MC.

ML- I love him he's so cute. He's basically an untouched piece of jade that learns from MC and the world and slowly learns to just be. I really like how his story is important to the overall plot. He tends to accompany MC but when I really like the points when the story focuses on him. Despite his sad backstory, is actually very kind at heart. It's so cute how he learns 'bad things' like pretending to be injured to be pitied from the MC and his sect. Is proud to be MC's 'lackey' and wants to be her village's 'son-in-law'.

Romance is slow but honestly it's fine. Rather than a dramatic love story, it's about two people who spend all their time together and have a tacit understanding and will always speak up for the other. Even if they're not romantically together, the story doesn't suffer from it.

This novel isn't perfect and sometimes the multiple plot thread entangle and get confusing. To be frank, I didn't really understand the climatic battle and the final antagonist confrontation. I mean I get it but it's also confusing and brings up some earlier story points I didn't think were relevant. Around chapter 60 the story felt like it was a bit draggy and honestly, the demon storyline wasn't very exciting for me.

However, I did enjoy the overall themes of this cultivation novel. Paranoia and power will always tear people apart but warmth and love will make the world a better place. <<less

Finally a new novel from Butterfly!! Thanks to the translator for picking it, I beg you to not drop it please T.T If you have a lot going on irl just take a break and slowly translate it.

The story has a similar taste to Ascending, do not disturb (Wich is one of my favs). A subtle comedic undertone but a lot going on in the background.

I see butterfly, my favorite author, and a new novel and I feel like a dog seeing water after a long time and I CLICK. I think this is her first cultivation novel she's written after her romance masterpiece of "ascending".

I'm ready to be comforted by a nice cozy novel from her.

Thank you for picking this up.

First half was a good read, but it slowly got boring for me, I dropped it when the MC went back to visit her village. It was heartwarming, but it's also very boring.

There isn't much logic, cultivation wasn't very focused on, the MC and ML could easily beat people higher than their own levels, and they seem to be able to get to whatever cultivation level they wanted to.

The main selling point is the comedy, how the MC cheat people left and right, she is a professional in touching porcelain... more>> and scamming people.

I gave 4 stars because I enjoyed the first half, but if I wanted to give a real rating, it would be 3. <<less
