How To Live As A Writer In A Fantasy World

Description

Reincarnated in a fantasy world. All of the novels worth reading here appear to be SAT English problems. So I began writing my own fantasy novels as a hobby to augment my previous job.

However, the novel I wrote had an odd ripple effect. That’s fantastic as well.

Rather than this being a 'bad' novel, I feel it retreads a lot of the same cliches of other similar novels. I won't go into what all these are, but I will give a couple of examples of things that really bug me.

1.) The natives are too emotionally immature. The protagonist is portrayed as a generally more sensible and reasonable individual. This is a problem not just in works of fiction, but in common belief IRL. People long ago were no less intelligent or morally sophisticated than we are today.... more>> For example, the evils of s*avery were being expounded upon in ancient greece more than 2000 years ago. The reason it wasn't abolished was because it went against personal interests, not because people didnt believe it was bad. Not saying the novel is guilty of this in particular, just saying the medieval people or those before them werent luddites. (100+ year old characters just not being that smart, emotionally mature etc. especially bug me. I dont believe a person will be more sensible than such an elder just because they are from the modern world. like I said before, so called 'modern' concepts like anti-s*avery, anti-discrimination, gender equality etc. are concepts that have existed for thousands of years. they are many reasons why they didnt prolifigate as today, but it wasnt because people were to emotionally or intellectually stunted to think of them.)

Edit: As another reviewer stated, the best example of this is how his book changed the viewpoints of so many people. This is really... inconceivable. Just looking at history and seeing how people hated others of different races/cultures/religions over minor reasons make it very clear why it's so unbelievable. I mean, we her have literal demons from hell who were (and still are) a menace to human society. From what we read about this guy's book (and how the MC himself describes it), it actually isn't even that good. How did it convince people to let go over their (arguably justified) prejudices? While it isn't stated so blatantly, the novel basically attributes the reason to people just not being used to works of fiction. This, again, is nonsense, if we look at history. We need look no further than 'A True Story', written by Lucian of Samosata, ~200 AD. Even if you read it today, I think it's hard to argue that the novella is a very convincing sci-fi novel and one that was very popular and widely read back then. My point being, people absolutely wrote fictional novels even before medieval times.

'So what's the big deal? This is just a made-up story, why does the author need to pay attention to what actually happened in history?'

In my opinion, the lure of fantasy is not going as wild and crazy with wizards, magic and sexy elves as possible. Rather, it is to represent a fantastical setting in a way that makes the reader believe it's actually possible, and to make it easy for them to immerse themselves. If the author goes too crazy, the reader starts thinking 'wait a minute, this is ridiculous', pulling them out of the experience. A fictional world can have its own rules, but in all other aspects, I advocate paralleling the real world as much as possible. And if 'well, people in this fictional world didnt think to write novels for commoners [even though its a clear gap in the market]' is a s*upid rule. And having s*upid rules for your world is just bad writing.

2.) Modernization and technology. I dont know why MCs (or authors) always feel the need to change the world they set their story in. I read fantasy because I like fantasy. If I wanted to read urban fiction, I would do that. Consequently, if a novel is set as fantasy, why modernize it through steam trains or whatever? It goes against what was initially offered. I feel this stems from the belief that technological advancement is inherently good. This is not true. We need look no further than the modern food industry for proof. Our ancestors were 100% eating better than we do today, although food availibility was a problem (quality wasn't). There are hundreds of examples I can pluck off the top of my head, like synthetic chemicals, pollutants, nuclear weapons, social media etc. However, as I said, the main problem I have is the 'bait and switch' of setting. I signed up for fantasy, not urban fiction. (On a side note, it also makes the MC seem not so smart, that he didnt consider the implications of this.)

Edit: And not even the concept of technology, or rather advancement, not always being good is a new idea. Just think of the story of pandora's box.

3.) Political systems. There is also the belief old political systems like monarchies, class systems etc. are bad and need to be changed or disposed of. Though the MC says he doesnt want to change the world, his views are clear through his book and actions. We can debate whether or not they actually are bad, I may even agree on that point, but trying to imitate or take elements from our modern systems annoy me. Democracy has its good points, but its not perfect. Mainly, it not being a 'meritocracy' and instead being a glorified popularity contest. Again, I think the reason authors aways retread this is because of an implicit belief that the new is just plain better than the old.

The novel is full of these generic tropes, but im too lazy to type further. as it is, I cant give a betrer than average rating, because it doesnt innovate or do anything interesting. <<less

I've got mixed feelings about this novel and am struggling to rate it.

This is a SoL romance harem novel with occasional fantasy social commentary and an unimportant underlying mystery.

First off the MC writer essentially creates a Web novel others interpret as profound. He doesn't recreate great works of fiction except the odd quote (his novel sounds generic and mid ngl). This ultimately is fine but he rarely actually writes/thinks about writing. Most of the story is a reaction to the novel.

The harem is defined in relation to the MCs novel.... more>> This could work if they all didn't love it as a bible. The women really seem to blend together emotionally despite the authors attempts.

Due to the lack of plot progression the pacing isn't great and there is rarely conflict above some mild fluttering. Overall decent but not the writing novel I was hoping for. <<less

One of the rare instances that I review novels is when it has a rating I think it doesn't deserve, and this is absolutely one of them.

First and foremost, the translation. It's just straight up painful to read, like a slightly edited MTL where the editor hardly understands English.

Next, premise. This one has me scratching my head cause it just makes absolutely no sense.
Spoiler

How the actual hell did his simple book, which isn’t even finished mind you, just staight up end racism? There was no build up, no background to it, it just up and changes everyones ideas about demons, even the ones that were attacked by them. I don't care how amazing of a book it was, people don't change like that, nor have they ever.

[collapse]

Ok, not looking so hot, how about the characters?
Spoiler

The main character is just bland. Theres nothing even remotely remarkable about him, he says he has no talent in martial arts so he just gives up on it. Writing seems to be the only thing this mf can do and even then, from the short pieces that we get about the novel, it sounds completely subpar, and would die in the lower ranks on this website.

The heroines? Idk how the author thought this was a good idea but basically every single girl is copy then paste. Seems like the author tried to give them personality but failed miserably.

There are no characters outside of them, only stereotypes that speak when spoken to.

[collapse]

I legit have no idea how people got past the first 5 chapters. I only got past cause I just kept thinking to myself 'Surely there's got to be a reason this is rated so highly. It must get better at some point. Maybe the translation will be fixed.' No. Please do not waste your time on this novel. It was painful.

A one-trick pony

I must be honest, the start was unique and intriguing; One can't help but wonder, with such a good beginning and such a unique idea, how could they possibly mess it up, right?

But when the novelty fades away, when its uniqueness turns into a constraint, and when its characters fail to entertain and evoke emotion, then one ought to realize what this really is: a one-trick pony, a wasted potential, a missed opportunity.

How regrettable.

what can I say?

It is a heartwarming story, tale about a world where demons are discriminated against each other and MC's book which he wrote out of boredom brought about a change in this world. MC's journey as a writer in this fantasy world.

It's comedy, there's a lot of misunderstnding and there's a good harem.

Spoiler

I haven't read much further but I heard there's a s*x scene too which is another reason to read this.

In a nutshell, I will recommend this novel to you all.

tr*shhh. Seriously. It's only novel from novelpia I don't like.

MC is so unreliable, unlikable. He basically has no personality.

Even JP dense and CN Gigachad alpha male are better compared to him.

FMCs are no better expect for their sexy body.

No character development. No story. He writes and world move around his writing. Dafaq?

I want to rate 1 star but illustration and s*x scenes are best ❤️ that happens once 100 Ch. Author knows how to catch attention of male monkeys.🤣

This novel have good potential at the start, but then transform into some kind of japanese wish fulfillment harem story.

I don't like this type of MC who easily blush just by stared by some beautiful girl, and how the girl easily interested in him. And I don't like how the author made his secret easily discovered, while he don't know ho to react and just went speechless. It made the MC kinda p**sy. He at least needs to try harder to cover it, like spreading some misunderstanding clue or whatever.... more>> Acctually, I like the concept of the story. I want to read how the MC's writing change the world. I just don't like the kind of School-boy-comedy-harem where it's not even funny to begin with. <<less

Boring wish fulfillment story. Feels more like a japanese webnovel/lightnovel than a korean one.

The author loves to fill the chapters with world devel0pment that don't really matters. It would be more bearable if he wasn't repeating the same thing over and over again. The chapters are majorly a wall of text with little character interaction, and when there's some interaction, it's mostly the same (for ex. The demon girl always whispers in his ears and he blush and avoid her eyes). Also when the MC talks with a FL

This does not deserve its high rating on NU.

This is just badly written wish fulfillment. Wish fulfillment isn't necessarily a bad thing, but in this case it's not written well at all.

The main character is incredibly bland, boring and reacts to everything like a typical JP MC (even though this is a KR novel). The FMCs are instantly interested in the MC and only have superficial distinguishing features from each other. They are more or less copy/pastes of each other.

The world building is very uninteresting and the author subjects you... more>> to a lot of information that doesn't matter.

The translation is also poorly edited MTL with lots of grammatical errors and awkward wording. <<less

I like generic fantasy stories, but unfortunately most of them here don't do "normal" romance. After reading countless titles with a "harem" tag on this website I though I got used to it, but they were just "bearable", but not this one. This one is miserable and infuriating experience, prime example of why I hate harem genre.

Good writing? There is. At first it is used on worldbuilding, but shifts towards describing ti*s every chapter.

Unique premise? There is! It is very interesting at first, but what's the point if focus more... more>> and more goes to females acting like cats in heat being the AXIS of every event.

Whatever good traits this title posseses, they all get offset by a very bad one at the core - protagonist himself. Being an empty self-insert shell without personality is nothing new. Although I don't tend to associate myself with such characters, they are a good vehicle to move story forward. But here he's just a wimp. He doesn't know what he wants and can't even follow through on his own thoughts and desires, nor properly suppress them.

Whatever interesting things there were, it all went to h**ny hell around a spineless loser who can neither eat what's in front of him, nor reject something he doesn't want. <<less

it's a harem teenage fantasy, don't waste your time!!!!

I was expecting a good story based on the rating, but I was extremely disappointed. First, the more you read, the less mention there is of the novels the author is supposedly writing, while there were too many chapters about s*x and everyday life. The characters are very bland, and there are too many girls and cringe-worthy content.

I read 117 chapters, where the author wrote only five chapters of his novel (he already wrote five chapters when the story began). It had... more>> great potential, but it seems like the author abandoned the main plot and focused on describing how he has a big "dagger, " as he likes to say.

it's a shame specially for me as I love anything about recreating novels/manga/anime/movies in a pararrel world or even a fantasy world.. I love everything about that and I can forgive anything like people are dumb or have no culturel knoledge because it's my guilty pleasure. So I was so dissapointed about this novel. <<less

So yeah, I'll be blunt; this is pretty boring. Like what you might've heard/seen/whatever from the other reviews here, there is not a lot going on in the novel. The MC writes a book in a world that has a very lacking supply of entertaining novels and it's a national hit. He writes a story that shows how sympathetic demons are and discrimination against them dies down but that's basically it. Most of the mc's time is spent just reading and researching stuff for his book and talking to cute... more>> girls. The MC, Isaac, is a very boring guy. An intellectual bookworm with no real spine to speak of. He can speak up against a crappy guy but god forbid he tell a woman off. Despite being born to a legendary knight father with two older knight aspirant siblings he's weak AF. Not a very thrilling guy to follow. And sadly, the heroines aren't exactly picking up his slack. There's a big tittied demon princess who is a boring tease (I'll admit to having a bias against her, teasing onee-sans are my least favorite character type). Pretty much every other interaction with the MC is her flustering him, which he pathetically falls for every time. A duke's daughter who can be jealous, snarky, and grumpy at times but is over all a pleasant enough individual most of the time. A human princess who is apparently hiding some aspect of her personality that I have yet to see and the MC isn't very comfortable around. And my least favorite character, a chick who seems all stoic and rigid but is just a lame delinquent who makes pointless threats an causes the MC to nearly wet himself. Seriously, their first interaction pretty much had her walk all over him. It was frustrating. No real conflict, no real drama (though I'm not complaining about a lack of that, at least a little bit would be good), and nothing really attention grabbing. It's not even at the level of a tr*shy novel you binge for fun. It's just lackluster. <<less

The novel begins when our protagonist, a modern-day writer, dies of a heart attack (presumably) and is reincarnated as Isaac, the youngest baron, in a fantasy world with all the modern knowledge related to cultures, fantasy works and other stuff...

Bored by his life, he decided to write something just like his previous life and it ended up being a cultural phenomenon.

It's a good, decent harem slice of the life story of our protagonist. there have been various criticisms of this story, the most prominent one being that it was a... more>> good idea that could have been executed somewhat differently, but I guess the author didn't want to go that way.

I have multiple novels on read at the moment and this one is the one I check the most often. MC being a writer and not some overly strong person is a good change but with just 25 chapters in, it's hard to say if it is going to stay like that. I loved this novel!! I am up to date with RAW so I can say that so far, the plot has not disappointed me. It is about a writer of novels who reincarnated in this new world and with his writings he changes the world.
He has a harem which, unlike most harems that never amount to anything, this MC does cross the barrier and there are scenes R-18

It's an unique story which is magnificent in my opinion! The story is about an author which is new to me and piqued my interest. The story is detailed which is a plus in my opinion. At the same time it doesn't contain unnecessary information which exists in many novels so I don't get bored.

Then again I only read the translated chapters so I don't know how it'll be in the later chapters but I presume it won't be that bad.

So far the plot has been pretty interesting and the interactions with the heroine quite sweet, 4/5.

I have one main gripe with the novel though. The author wants to give an impression of the MC sharing some great philosophical or historical truths he had brought from Earth, but they are extremely shallow:

A teacher: "Then why does history repeat itself? What do you think?"

MC: "Well, honestly, I'm not sure either. When you look at history, there always seems to be a similar pattern. For example, if you examine the process that leads to war, it's surprisingly similar. Countries engage in conflicts with each other, and if they can't resolve them, it often ends in war."

Pretty decent novel for the most part. Characters are well written and given a fair amount of depth. The MC is alright, but I don't really like how passive or indecisive he is at times. He could not like a situation going on in front of him, but he'd just stand there and watch it unfold and not react until everything is over and done with. Really frustrating to read at times. It's gotten better over time I suppose, but still...

Besides that minor annoyance, I quite like the novel.... more>> I wouldn't call it all that interesting due to the overall plot majorly being everyone's reactions to the MC's story and him picking up girls left and right, but it's engaging to a certain extent. Things have also started to pick up as of where I'm at currently with him finally revealing his identity to the world.

Although this novel may not be all that great, in my opinion it's still better than the majority of similar works. Definitely worth the read. <<less

the smut scene starts at chapter 111 in the raw, and its ok, this sentence is brought to you by the gay. Other than that, the story of a reincarnated writer is very interesting. The MC is not dense, just didn't know things like "eating ramen in my room, wink wink" in this new world. There are a lot of fan crazed scenes in the story and literally everyone on the planet is a fan of the MC's work, the fame is extraordinary, imagine the famous Romeo and Juliet, everyone... more>> heard of that once, that is how famous the MC's work is, plus a little bit of bible and all sacred scriptures, and a chapter of engineering. Still early times, but I enjoyed the story so far. The story essentially fulfills one of the ultimate power fantasy of a writer, when your publications makes tangible impact on society. The impact is of course a little exagerrated but still in the realm of reasonability. The pacing is a bit faster than what I would prefer, but I think my taste is slower than most other readers.
