As we all know, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Jihua Hospital, which is affiliated with A Medical University has two deputy chief physicians who do not see eye to eye.

From their freshman year to their doctoral graduation and then to their training and professional title evaluation, Jiang Xu and Sheng Fangyu have been fighting and thwarting each other. It was like a case id, ‘if you don’t kill me, I will kill you’, ‘you get 96 in the exam, I’ll get 97 in the exam’.

In the end, they even fell for the same girl.

But who would have thought that before the two could even get into a fight, the girl took her girlfriend’s hand and actually came out of the closet in front of them? The two straight men, who had been at loggerheads for three months over the girl, had their three worldviews shattered.

The two enemies sat down to drown their sorrows in alcohol and in the confusion, somehow together in bed.

Afterward, Jiang Xiu got up holding his almost broken back. His mind exploded for half a minute, and he resolutely decided to forget about it.

However, three months later, he looked at the u**ne test report, touched his disappearing abs, and looked at himself in the mirror in disbelief.

“Ugh—”

Hahahahhaahahha that performance! Handsome! Handsome! Handsome!

Let me get this straight, I really love this book and I highly recommend it but hahaha. I read this a really long time ago. Then then, there's an audio drama?! Eat eat eat!

Legend of the white snake performance? Phenomenal!

... more>> Now that my knowledge has been refreshed, let's talk about how amazing this book is. Pregnancy, male pregnancy is a very interesting concept. Both socially and biologically, so what if we realistically tackle this in consideration of both fields?

This novel.

Jiang Xu and Shen Fangyu. One is a little cold, a little mean and a little quiet, the other is helpless at the little cold, little mean and little quiet but he won't sit still about it.

Hahahha wow, please wear cond*ms hahaha. I don't want to talk too much, just read the book, seriously. It's amazing.

(Though the last part got a little too dramatic with the publishing papers and stuff)

Spoiler

What Jiang Xu meant by 'I'm willing to believe in my country' is him talking about how he feels that his, Xiaoxiao's and Shen Fangyu's privacy and safety won't be jeopardized. I'll be completely honest here. I don't have prejudice towards any western countries but from the interviews and stuff I've watched off the internet, it's not just me but many know that America is one of the most arrogant countries. (Again, with a grain of salt. You can correct me.) Whether it's president trump or so. Asians have always been discriminated against while the white people have been idolized. It's actually very noble to want to break out of this stereotype and work hard. That's why China is one of the fastest growing countries. Moreover, this novel isn't for Americans to read anyway, I understand it may feel bad to be villanized but it's not like there weren't characters from China who were hostile either. (Huang Bin.) I think the sentiments Jiang Xu has is quite normal, everyone wishes for their country to be well known and respected, and for a surgery so big, It's not weird for Jiang Xu to want to publish a paper for.

I wouldn't call this entire scenario excess nationalism, but it's dramatic. It's drama.

For me, this is a well-written story. It was entertaining to read because of the comedic elements, and have the right amount of drama. I like the emotional development of the main cp. And I also like that although the mpreg is not exactly explained realistically but it was executed logically.

To be honest both the ML, and especially the MC's characters are flawed. Flawed not because they were not written properly but because they are flawed like a HUMAN. They are not exactly perfect, they are sometimes dumb, selfish, vulnerable..... more>> But despite these I was touched by how their relationship developed. And tbh, this cp is now a contender of 'my most favorite danmei cps' hahaha.

Spoiler

There are just some things that I was a bit put off, and that is the somewhat unresolved relationship of ML with his family. But I guess that is an intentional part of the story to portray the realities of life. Not all relationships can be mended perfectly. Also, the overly patriotic sentiment of the author about the international academic publication issue is a bit "ehh.." hahaha. But I can let it pass given that that is just a somewhat small (?) episode in the overall plot. I think it just has to happened so that the ML could do the operation on his wifey personally and successfully lol.

[collapse]

Plus points with the fact that author gives enough spotlight to people around the main characters to make their life feel more real and alive. <<less

I really like the novel. I mtl-ed it after chapter 18.

As an avid mprg fan, I really liked how this tackles about more realistic birthing process - the pros and cons of birthing or aborting, the relationship they have and the procedure of the whole unique medical problem.

It's not just about the child, the happiness as parents and the strengthing of the romantic feelings between parents. It's about facing reality and that the situation is very risky.

I'm not trying to discredit or invalidate other mpreg author's. They are amazing writers... more>> who are creative in making out an explanation that's not very common or a normal occurrence in this world so them giving "weird" reasons is okay for me.

But this novel is really a game-changer for me. Just like BoriCats's review, maybe it's because this novel is written from the perspective of medical experts who are (and should be) knowledgeable about these things so it's quite realistic in that sense.

We also see more of the patients lives - it's nice and heartwarming but some some are also sad. It touched my heart and gave me a lesson to appreciate your loved ones especially when they are still alive. As an asian, the scenario of "meeting the parents" and "seeing the parents again" are also nice but there are more stories that I have read that are much fitted to my taste so that particular scenario gave me 3.5

But overall the novel is amazing. You will love the journey of our two main character - as enemies (and somewhat friends in a sense), as people who are starting to develop feelings, as lovers and as parents (in the extras mostly).

It's a nice read. 5.0 for me.

As for the people who wants to read the mtl version:

Spoiler

there are websites giving uploading those but the extra's are tricky to find. I recommend to copy the chinese version of the title which is "江医生他怀了死对头的崽" and then paste it to the search bar. Go to zhenhunxiaoshuo and use google translate that's already built in chrome :>

Surprisingly very good. Translater did an amazing job. One star down for the nationalism... But that's really hard to avoid in Chinese novels. I don't like nationalism in anything including my own culture. To me, it's dangerous. Also for the translator using the R word 3 times.

But yeah. The author dared to address things that many other Chinese authors do not. Such as bis**uality, sexism, even gender. All in a positive light. It was incredibly emotional and surprisingly deep for a blurb that seems deceptively comedic. All in all,... more>> enjoyable.

When reading books from another culture I often have to remind myself that I am only a guest. I don't know if I'm allowed to make judgement calls on a different culture. Especially when I don't know the language or nuances. And especially when my own culture is frankly just as guilty. I've been reading danmei for a while now thanks to the volunteers who selflessly translate these books for our enjoyment. I'm grateful for the experience to try and experience stories from another culture who enjoy the same things as I do.

Incoherent rambles, sorry. Those are my thoughts for now. <<less

this is very cool.. feels like a real-life case...

The author use journal and article (in real life) as material for plots and medical terminology, treatment therapies and cases There are also many scientific and medical terms...

their emotional development is slow, I mean not that slow.. but, if you consider that they only realized 'their feelings' after 10 years of hanging out (Arguments, enmity, fierce competition and quarrels) plus accident plot first and love later.. this counts as a slow burn but if you did not consider them. It's not... more>> that long...

their family issues, patient issues, background are written pretty well... Even though I have to say that most of everyone's issues are some clichés. but again, clichés plots in novels exist because some are written based on reality you could say it's a cliché, but not cheesy, meaningful and not many pleasantries.. (no face slapping or backlash..) I read this in 3 days... believe it or not

They only have 94 ch in total Wich 5 ch as special episodes/aftermath

The negative?.. well that's more of a sense of patriotism. Very thick.. haha

This is a good bl reading and story. If it weren't for some of my classmates are Didn't Welcomed bl, I would recommend this to everyone I know <<less

This could have easily been 5 stars, but some things really killed the plot along the way, so I’ll give this four.

I liked the fact that this story was genuinely enemies to lovers. This trope is not easy to write, but the author has done well. I particularly liked the character development of both the ML and MC.

Coming to what I did not like

Nationalism took over the story at some point. It felt somewhat ironic that the author kept taking digs at Western countries and then had her main characters... more>>

When the pot calls the kettle black, is it possible to think highly of the pot?

At the risk of oversharing, I am not from a Western country, but I think that it takes some amount of self-awareness to understand that every country has its flaws. It felt very hypocritical to criticize and villainize The West when the characters of the story don’t find acceptance in the country in which the story is set. The author made no effort to mask the countries she is taking a dig at, and I felt it was very prejudiced of the writer.

The smut is comedic. Whenever the two characters get down to business, the writer describes it as follows: “The tide rose and fell, and the jade tree bloomed.” Now, I understand metaphors can be nice if used on occasion, but this went on and on, and at some point, I wasn’t sure if the author was describing autumn rain or s*x.

The author really builds up the story until the surgery, and then it gets done without much description in the final chapter. Felt like a letdown! <<less

This novel is a solid 5.... if you disregard the blatant nationalism and xenophobia. Other reviewers have already brought it up, but I feel like it needs repeated. I'll be talking about some spoilers, but I'll try to keep everything understandable without anyone having to open the spoiler brackets.

I'll cover what I like about the novel first.

It does an amazing job of portraying what the life a of an OBGYN doctor might actually be like. It definitely feels like a really long episode of House M.D. with how ridiculously easily... more>> they get rare medical cases and are miracle workers at making everything work out fine, but it still works in context. This is because it seems like the author has done quite a bit of research and took the profession they're writing about very seriously. I'm not a doctor but what they wrote is at a minimum believable. And it's exciting because it's a fictional story, it'd be boring to read about all the normal everyday medical cases that real doctors have to go through. This also helps bring in a bit of believability to the male pregnancy part of the story and does so in a natural way. It also raises the stakes of male pregnancy while somehow simultaneously not diminishing the risks that women have to face. There's an overarching idea that both doctor JX and SFY are part of a women's rights group, and it's not played off lightly. They're not the heroes of the women's rights group either, they just help them, which I really appreciate. This is diminished a tiny bit by the nationalism inherent in the story, but it's subtle.

It doesn't shy away from LGBTQ+ topics. There's all sorts of moments where the author affirms the existence of people in this minority group, including bi-people! Yay representation! However there are some caveats in regards to that part because of the nationalism.

The romance between the two leads is actually a great friends-to-lovers story, and their dynamic is pretty amazing. I also really like the added extras about....

Spoiler

Their daughter XiaoXiao. She's very different compared to her parents and even with the very little we get to learn about her shines.

[collapse]

Whew... Well, the happy parts are out of the way, now I can move on to the bad.

First we can talk about what I don't think of as blatant xenophobia but might still come off that way. There's gun violence, robbery, bad policing, and even some "foreign savior" tropes. I don't see it as that bad, but maybe that's because I grew up in the US. The analogy of Country M to the US is pretty accurate I think, but I think people are missing a lot of things here... The US really IS that bad in major cities. The US is really high in the rankings with gun violence, and there's plenty of crime in large US cities. Foreign tourists are a big target for this kind of crime too. US police also do no serve and protect like some police cars might lead you to believe. The US police are actually kinda crap, and the depiction in the story is pretty believable imo. All of this isn't to say that there isn't some bias from the author, but... I dunno, up to that point in the story I didn't see it as xenophobia. There's also the parallel of Country S which isn't portrayed too poorly or too positively.

There's also the doctors being money hungry... that's true. The US has some of the worst cost-to-patient-care ratios in the world. It's a business in the US, and it's a huge problem. The foreign doctors are a bit cartoonishly villainous, but that's not surprising to me. There has to be antagonists in a story, and this one chose a foreign doctor. This is offset, to me, by the story constantly talking about how Country Z's medical science is behind other countries. Obviously there's still some nationalism with the story trying to shift the blame to other countries and the influence of money and the press, but it wasn't too horrible... until later.

Next, the women's rights being diminished by the nationalism is a bit subtle. There's absolutely no talk about the culture of the country affecting the way women are viewed or treated. This is never talked about in the story. The country this is set in (Country Z... ha) has lots of issues with women's rights on a systemic level but that's never talked about. There are only two things that are acknowledged are happening, 1. women are mistreated by men individually, and 2. It's the fault of individual men and not the culture that demeans the women, therefore protecting men who mistreat them. It's fine that this story doesn't talk about that, and I'm not gonna fault the writer for not wanting to write about it, but with the blatant nationalism later in the story this point is a little more obvious to me.

Okay, the ugly.

Chapter 81, Respect Medicine. This is where the story takes a sharp nose dive into full nationalism and xenophobia. The previous doctor from Country M is used as a villain to provoke things but...

Spoiler

this is used to basically drive the "CN is the best and everyone is just looking down on us" narrative. The chapter even ends with a toast of "To Our Motherland". All of this is about JX and SFY being forced to complete the surgery in CN because of this villain, but it changes from a story about their love being able to overcome an obstacle into their country being better than other countries. It completely ruined everything.

[collapse]

After this chapter the story focuses more on the nationalism and xenophobia while ignoring a lot of problems. And I mean a lot. This is all spoiler territory.

Spoiler

The two leads get married in Country M... the very country the novel spends a lot of time criticizing. They can't get married in their own country, and later they even have to exploit a legal loophole to even get some of the basic rights of married couples in their country. They also aren't allowed to put both of their names on their daughter's birth certificate despite both of them being her biological parents. This is played off like the country is doing them some great service by letting them even enter her into the national registry. The grandparents mistreat their own sons for being gay, and even call one of them a man-woman for getting pregnant, but that's fine because she was just slightly upset at the time. It has nothing to do with ingrained prejudice (sarcasm)

[collapse]

Basically if you don't want the story completely ruined, make sure you know that the nationalism and xenophobia is going to get ridiculous from chapter 81 on. <<less

A well written enemies to lovers slice of life novel. There were lots of things that I enjoyed about this novel and things that I didn't.

Things I loved:

I loved the development between ML and MC and how their love grew for each other. Slow but very realistic. I also loved how nontoxic their relationship was; how they loved and trusted each other. I loved how respectful ML was of MC and took responsibility from the beginning. Although MC was harsh at times, his love wasn't any less... just a really... more>> great love between these two.

I loved that there was a balance of MC and ML's lives in the medical field and their personal love lives. The author used lots of medical terms and you can tell that the author did their homework.

I love how realistic ML and MC's parents' reactions were.

I loved the fact that side characters were brought back at the end and not disregarded like a lot of online novels.

I loved all the extra chapters were we got more information about MC and ML's lives as the years went by.

Things that I didn't like:

I was not a fan of the stereotypes of how it was more dangerous to live in the west and how western doctors only cared about money and fame. I wish the countries would have stayed anonymous with just the 1 letter name in this fiction world. However, suddenly towards the middle and end, real countries were mentioned, so it was very easy to see where the "bad" doctors were from. This just left a bad taste in my mouth.

Some of the intimate (s*x) scenes between ML and MC were so hard to understand. Too many metaphors that made no sense to me, so I had no idea what happened. I understand that it's for censorship reasons but I really cannot understand flower language. I would have liked something more straightforward than "flowering blooming."

Overall, it was a great love story that did made me shed few tears. I would recommend it if you're looking to read a great love story between a ML and MC. Just keep in mind that logically, some of stuffs are not possible but the author really did do their job at making it believable. <<less

Don't believe any low rating if they do exist.

The relationship between MC and ML are so Healthy it's MAGNIFICENT!!!

They Communicate. Sure they're not perfect, and they did have conflict, but it was so Small, Short, barely happen, but did happen because they're just a normal Flawed Human.

But the author did Outstanding job with the flows of the story till the end. No Unnecessary Drama whatsoever. No Villains. It's really a journey of Pregnancy, Doctor/Hospital stuff, and the research of how to deliver a Safe and Perfect Operation for Male... more>> Pregnancy.

It's GREAT! Everyone is Great! All the Characters are Likable and Enjoyable! Of course especially MC and ML who are Lovable and deserve Happily Ever After Ending!

You should just read this!! No need for second thoughts!

This novel is very unique... you see... we're all tired of rich MLs who are cold, emotionless... or unrealistic plotlines, weird families... it's become a cliche now.

This novel is different. The characters are realistic. They are not wealthy CEOs but ordinary doctors. They are living an ordinary life, with an ordinary family... like everything seems real... that's what I liked the most.

... more>> They struggle with problems we struggle!

But, man, the the plot was interesting, mpreg is usually seen in smut or omegaverse stories... but here they gave medical knowledge about it too... idk if it's correct tho

The MC and ML have a good relationship and their child *smiles* she's a darling!

Especially the child's name "jiang mu shen", where "mu" means to adore/like... so the name professes Jiang xiu's love for shen fangyu... exactly meaning "Jiang likes shen"

SO DAMN SWEET!!!! <<less

I really enjoyed this story ! The characters are surprisingly mature, I also like how the author managed the cliche troupes

1) running away with the ball ?

- no, he right away tells the ML that he's pregnant and so they cohabitate.

... more>> 2) meaninglessly stretching the plot and keeping them from confessing ?

- no, they realise their feelings and confess so in the same chapter

So in a gist, the story didn't follow many of the cliche which I thought it would. The male lead is just so sweet, especially how he keeps trying to irk the MC always keeps me amused

Spoiler

the only con would be the side characters were kind of dumb ; both the characters announced that they have found a partner on the same day but hid that they were dating each other. The coworkers were still unable to correlate that were actually talking about each other. As they thought that there's no way these deadly rivals would actually marry each other .

[collapse]

Spoiler

To be specific I liked ML the most. He probably had a crush on the MC when they met for the first time. But he thought that there's no way he was gay, so he kept provoking the MC to compete with him even to the point of competing on who will get the girl first, though he actually didn't like her

It's one of my favorite danmeis. It's not cringe, has mature characters, and is probably the most realistic world with mpreg you're going to get. Great enemies to lovers. People say that the MC is too cold or sum shit; he's not. He's MATURE. There's a difference. People will also say the ML is henpecked or whatever; he's not. He's just trying to make a pregnant person comfortable. The MC faces realistic problems: Why am I pregnant? Am I truly a man if I have a uterus? Should I abort... more>> the child? The story also doesn't have a villain, which (imao) should be f*cking normal for a slice-of-life. They are normal people and normal people don't have one singular person that is out to get them iykwim. The author also addresses a lot of stuff that isn't normally addressed in chinese novels. The only annoying thing was the patriotic shit, but it didn't affect my reading, so I don't care. I think that's it. <<less

This is an unexpectedly serious novel.

The idea of mpreg is very scientific-sounding and I skipped most of it. Almost every other chapter has medical terminology and patient cases. It's almost like a mini TV shows.

MC and ML are both super competitive. The story of how they met and continously collide throughout 10 years are really funny and silly. How they got together is even more silly. However, we are really served with their slow relationship progress. From enemies to lovers. Hate and love are really separated by a thin window... more>> paper.

They don't just accept that mpreg can happen. This story shows how they struggle to accept, how MC felt like a monster, how ML felt with being bent, and other insecurities. I felt it's all very complete with no loose end. A beautiful story.

Though, some of you might disagree. But it's personal opinion and please don't insult the ratings given by other people ok. <<less

To be honest, I would have liked this more if only I could get myself to like the Mc's and Ml's personality.

Not saying there is anything wrong with them. I just don't like novels with cold and a bit or too much of a tsundere personality in the main character. Also don't like hen-pecked wife ML (s).

So, it really left a bad taste in me. I definitely won't re-read, but I can say that it's definitely recommendable.

... more>> It's a good novel but it's definitely not my type of novel.

The author did a good job with the medical stuff, at least it was made easy to read and make sense of.

The good thing about this novel is probably because, compared to other mpreg novel it's a bit more realistic in a fictional way that is.

If you enjoy a tsundere shou and a loyal dog, hen-pecked gong then this novel might be for you not so much for me.

3.5⭐ ended up being 3.

I really loved this novel!

The story is quite straightforward. It's mpreg in a normal modern setting, where men getting pregnant is still considered out of the norm. Both the MC and ML are doctors (specializing in obstetrics and gynecology), so the novel is mainly about how to go about male birth, considering that there are very little known cases about it.

The writing and character development was really good though! Both MC and ML seem human, with relatable struggles and capable of growing and learning from their mistakes. I also really... more>> like how the author deals with relationships, be it romantic, friendship, or familial. The issues brought up really touched me, some even bringing me to tears.

As the translation is only less than half of the story, I MTLed the rest knowing how much I hated MTL. I didn't even get the chance to read the extras as there's no MTL available for it. But still I enjoyed it.

This story has a simple line-up of plot but uses a uncommon topic of scientifically being pregnant when you are male. Why this was a good book is because it was written in the viewpoints of obstetrician and gynecologist and the scientific terms and facts was accurate. It... more>> really depicts all the hardships and problem one may face in terms if this happens in real life.

The romance between the two are slow but it was worth it and justified. Love how it ends and I enjoy reading it. I just hope I also read the extras.

It's a nice book and you may think that this was a comedy but it was not. It's not so heavy but it's serious. It's realistic and highly informative. <<less
