The first time Ling Changye laid eyes on Xia Bai, all he could see was the captivating absence of his cerebrum. He couldn’t fathom how this man had managed to survive through the horrifying games.

It wasn’t until he got injured in a game, looking like he was about to kick the bucket, that Xia Bai unexpectedly emerged. His beautiful eyes gazed sincerely at Ling Changye and his tiny Adam’s apple quivered as he discreetly swallowed some saliva.

“May I have your corpse?”

Ling Changye: “?”

Xia Bai tilted his head, and behind him, a group of corpses materialized, staring at them with eager eyes. He asked politely once more, “May I have your corpse?”

Ling Changye fell silent.

———

Xia Bai and his companions found themselves locked in the morgue by other players. A ghastly wind rustled the white shrouds covering the room full of corpses.

Companion: “My heart is racing.”

Xia Bai: “Mine too.”

They exchanged a knowing glance. Companion: “On the count of three!—Run!”

“Ahhhh!” The companion sprinted towards the exit, eyes wide with fear.

“Ahhhh!” Xia Bai excitedly dashed towards the corpses, his face flushed with excitement.

“……?”

———

Xia Bai was thrust into a terrifying game.

System: [Scanning completed. Player’s soul skill is related to corpses.]

Xia Bai, who frequently dug up corpses and treated them as family, shifted his eyes guiltily.

System: [Player shall be known in-game as the Corpse Collector. Your skill is ‘The Living Dead’. We hope you can become a responsible corpse owner.]

As time passed, the number of corpses trailing behind Xia Bai grew. Most were players who had perished in the game. They entrusted their skills and bodies to him, protecting him, accompanying him, unconditionally believing in him. It was then that he truly understood the original intentions and lifelong responsibility of being a corpse driver.

As his grandfather had once told him, “Miles I shall roam, to send all home.”

This is horror, serious horror, not the kind of soft-washed horror you usually see in Chinese novels.

Mutilation, cannibalism, body horror, lots of r*pe (not the main characters), human trafficking, child ab*se, mu*der, insects... if you can think of it, it's likely in this novel.

Often in great detail.

... more>> If you don't like hardcore (splatter) horror, don't read it.

There's a major psychological component that many readers likely won't appreciate, it dives into pathological as well as simply incomprehensible personalities and world-views.

If you don't like anything that doesn't fit into the "pitiful and harmless victim" category when it comes to central characters, then this isn't for you.

Personally, I have nothing bad to say about it.

Some things people might find offensive:

Spoiler

There's a cross-dressing man leading on other men, and a "trans" character that was forcefully transitioned by traffickers. He later "detransitions".

Misogyny as well as misandry, sometimes routed in a game or coming from unimportant side-characters.

Abnormal psychological states, such as victims of horrific crimes being okay with what happened to them. Not in the sense of Stockholm, but honestly coming to the conclusion that their life was okay, because they were content during that time.

[collapse]

All topics are handled tactfully, nothing is being justified or treated like something not so bad.

It's the opposite, the novel is very focused on the dark sides of humanity, how deplorable people can be, and what it does to the victims.

There's no China-best-country either, it's very critical of many things usually shown as normal or even great.

I've read a lot of survival horror games and can safely say that this novel is quite unique in its tone, how the world works, and the games.

Characters are deep, develop visibly through what they experience, there are complex relationships and characters live even when the MC isn't present.

You might not see one for a long time, and when they show up again, it's clear something happened to them – that you get to hear about little by little.

The big mystery is interesting and gets supplemented over time.

It might be good to point out that MC isn't a goody-two-shoes, he's strange, maybe creepy for some people, and he's not constantly the focus of attention.

He doesn't really stand out, no rapidly climbing the rankings or other power-fantasies, he's just trying to do his thing and doesn't care about anything else.

I highly recommend it to horror lovers that are immune to basically everything and appreciate different portrayals of victims, social structures, and relationships.

5 stars for now, because it deserves it. <<less

It's a 5/5 star for me. The premise and the main character are interesting, which caught my attention. Xia Bai, the main character, may have a dumb look on his face, but he's very smart. The novel focused on him with the settings of the game.

I quite like the identity he has, "corpse chaser." I haven't seen a character setting like that. Here, we can see more about the duties of corpse chasers and why they did it.

There's also various characters that enriched the novel more, like Liu Xiang, Xuezhu,... more>> Yang Mei, Erhwa (love him), Yang, Yi, the old mans (lao qian, lao wang, etc.), and also his boyfriend. It's a love at first for the two of them, and I think it's magical. The subtle hints of their affection just make my heart feel sweet. They're a power couple, btw.

The game's presence wasn't that high, but it's there. Just read it because I can tell spoilers will come out of me.

For the arcs, it's all about humans actions and choices. Ignorance, malice, cruelty, resentment, etc. It's all about the dark things. Most of the game arcs are inspired/taken in real life, which made you wonder about it. Ending is also property closed. It didn't leave any loose ands at all. Highly recommended. <<less

One of my newer favourite novels, the story is just different enough to feel unique in the infinite flow genre and the characters are fleshed out and grow through the story.

There is an explanation given for the Game that fits the plot and the individual games are entertaining and puzzling while also keeping the darkness inherent to horror.

The MC is somewhat OP but part of that comes from his lack of interest originally, and later on his understanding that he can't fix everything for everyone, and everyone makes their own... more>> decisions. He is the kind of MC I can appreciate and like, who isn't a Gary Stu or a holy father, but still realistic in wanting to help where he can without sacrificing himself or those he cares for to the cause.

ML and MC's initial meeting is very suited to MC's unique brand of "necrophilia" and corpse appreciation, and ML himself - while OP - doesn't take over the whole story as soon as he shows up, but allows the MC to grow and keep shining in his role as a high IQ game clearer.

Also yes, the ML is
Spoiler

the "Ling Jiangye" (or Changye) mentioned in the summary. He is only mentioned by name during the first game, but shows up "in person" soon after.

Okay ranting time, when I picked up this novel and read the first arc I was literally happy to have found a horror novel that finally piqued my interest.

It was really really good after the first arc and I even had a favourite one: the Red Rose Manor.

I was honestly expecting it to be more than 200 chapters, because of how much detail the author was bringing into the story. I was expecting it to be much more fleshed out.

When I found out it was only about 147 chapters, I... more>> thought maybe perhaps the author would wrap it up nicely.

I'm not saying the novel itself wasn't nice, believe me, it was good. Well till the point where we got to the last arc and I felt like "Wait, that's it?"

There are a lot of details given that I felt like the author could have explored more and there were lots of unanswered questions. It might have been a good read but I was expecting a bit more compared to what I got.

I would advise you not to read this review if you haven't read the whole novel yet as it contains a lot more spoilers than you would love to know about, so please just stop here.

I like the novel go and check it out if you are interested. Don't read this review if you haven't read the entire novel yet.

• Yang Mei and Yang Yi

Now you might be thinking what problem could I have with this pair of brothers well let me explain.

When we were introduced to this pair of brothers I loved both of their personalities. I love Yang Yi's anti-hero vibes and I love Yang Mei's vibrant vibe.

Their characters were fleshed out and unlike vague supporting characters. Now what got me annoyed was when the misunderstanding of their relationship kind of just unwrapped and I felt like I couldn't understand why Yang Yi chose to keep quiet and allow his brother to hate him due to their parents. It was kind of unrealistic to me. I don't know why Yang Yi needed to return his brother to their parents knowing how their parents are. Perhaps his brother might have needed a parent at that time but simply going back to these people knowing how they ab*sed you guys and just accepting it and not saying anything and allowing your brother to hate you because of those people got me kind of thinking "hell no". Those people almost killed you and your brother and you let your brother keep mourning for them? Wow.

The strain on the relationship could have been about anything at all, anything whatsoever. For Yang Mei to have felt like his own brother would try to kill their parents without any good reason was just plain s*upid. I mean whose parents keep saying in front of their son that your brother hates us, "hello"— red flag? Yang Mei's character is someone who's not sensible but seriously no matter how s*upid someone is they could read in between the lines.

The fact is that his (YM's) character started well, he was at the top of the leaderboard and had a good skill that made me interested and was fun. As time went on in the novel he just became shallow. Not the bad shallow but just empty, like a beautiful vase with no flowers.

I could talk on and on and on about how disappointed I was with Yang Mei's character but let's move on.

There's not much problem with Yang Yi but the cold on the outside but warm on the inside setting at the end didn't really do it for me, but that's just a personal opinion. His character was stable and didn't collapse, though I still loved evil scientist Yang Yi.

• Hua Haoming (HHM)

Now with HHM, I didn't have a problem with this character but I did have a problem with with his second personality.

In my favourite arc of this novel, we got to know about his second personality. Only, it was just mentioned in passing and nothing else happened. We didn't get to know more, we didn't get to see more of him. We were just told that it/he was evil, but we didn't see any evil it/he did. HHM just kind of misunderstood him/it, the guy who was just trying to protect him all along.

He (HHM) never got to know his second personality, there was no improvement there. It was just mentioned and I felt kind of cheated because I was really interested in HHM's second personality and wanted to know much more about him and his interest in our main character but it was really not explored and it just kind of ended up that.

I know that our MC got to know the same thing the second personality knew but it really killed the fun.

• ML

Believe me, there were a lot of characters I was very disappointed in but I decided to just name the first three if not I believe this review would be really really long.

To be honest, I have met male leads who were not even interesting and I've met ones that were just empty vases or carbon copies but to be honest, this one was different. Our ML here is Mr perfect and I tell you when I say Mr perfect I mean Mr perfect. Believe me, this guy hasn't even made an ounce of a mistake—not one (maybe he did and I didn't remember). He hasn't done anything wrong he's always perfect, smart and right.

As captain, he came to life but as a romantic partner, I feel like he just failed. He didn't fail in the way that he wasn't romantic or that he didn't care about our MC no, no he failed because I couldn't even feel 'him'. The romance in this was literally bland and to be honest I would have preferred it if it were not even added, because it just felt like there was nothing there. I mean his personality was okay but I just wanted him to feel realistic.

It felt like most of the time he was just there because he was meant to be the ML or there because he's the captain and he is there to comfort his teammates, he is there to defend his team but yet he isn't there for himself. I don't feel any emotion from his father's death: something that was meant to be emotional for him. We never got to see emotionally how he was. We only go to know through others how he felt.

Every time the MC was a bit apprehensive about how to approach the topic of his dad he just came out with "Oh I know and I don't blame you" or "I'm all okay, I've come to accept it". I mean, it might have been 7 years but still, you don't get over losing your parents ever, especially if they mean the world to you. There was never a moment of vulnerability from him.

Special mentions: Yu You (sorry don't remember the name) the system and MC's father.

First of all, what was up with YY? This character got a whole villain arc I was waiting for but by the end author just forgot?🤷 I mean who really burnt down Wugu village? What's up with the main system communicating with him/her (kind of forgot which gender she/he represents as) and WHY YY?? What about his/her parents? Did they ever meet?

What was up with the whole system thing? Why wasn't it explored until later? Did MC's system's warning mean nothing and how was that last battle so easy? Why was there no loss or death from the group? What was the use of the MC, as the ML or any character could be the MC and nothing would have changed? Is there a book 2?

MC's father came off wrong. Let's say his son was a 30-something-year-old guy and he was married to a girl and had a kid already. Would he still tell his some to be a virg*n again and get married again? He didn't come off as a dad to a son but as a dad to a daughter and he doesn't have a daughter but a son. His son is not going to get pregnant. They were already in a relationship before you came along and your son is a freaking adult. That's why I loved the mom best. At least let's not mention the way they quickly become family but for the dad to be that overbearing knowing that the same guy he dislikes is not only his son's partner but also the guy who freaking united you guys is just WOW. What did the ML do to deserve that strong overbearing protection for your son and dislike towards him? That was unreasonable speaking right there.

Now if you have finished reading this review, then don't get me wrong. All my complaints are things that might have made the novel a bit more than what it is right now. Apart from the characters, the acrs were good, the lessons it teaches were amazing and I love how they all got solved even though I felt like there were a lot of cannon folders in this. Nice horror although it's not really scary: (at least for me).

My rating for now is three stars and perhaps after I read the translated version I would have gotten much more information than I got in the mtl and maybe most of my questions will be answered. Though, I will not waste my time with the extras so as not to give myself another headache. Maybe after my next read, this might be a four-star.

Please this is just my opinion and if you feel different then I'm happy that you got to love this novel much more than me. I also encourage others to try this novel as it is really good in certain aspects. Do so for Erwa's sake (he's my favourite character btw). <<less

Between 3-5 stars. So around 4? It's okay, but it can be abit of a bore if you want horror. This is more mu*der mystery unravelling clues. It's not even unlimited flow, they're in the real world and it's more like.... guild taking jobs, weekly instance runs. It's abit eh mostly because each arc isn't all that interesting, you can technically just skip to the end and understand what the story is about. Which isn't... very appealing.

Tbh, I think the best arc is the Huaning TV arc. Everything arc after/before... more>> that becomes less thrilling by comparison. I think it peaked there.

Also, for those who are worried (spoiler) : none of the protagonist group dies, so don't worry! go in with confidence to like the characters! <<less
