Back to the Age of Dinosaurs

Gu Lu was a Paleontologist. He was very glad to reborn as a small dinosaur.

But the terrible thing was that he turned into a Triceratops cub inside a nest of Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Tyrannosaurus Rex was the strongest carnivore known in the history of the Earth, also called the “Imperial Species”.

Triceratops was an herbivorous dinosaur and the staple food of Tyrannosaurus Rex.

But fortunately, he had a very doting Tyrannosaurus Rex “Dad” called Mungo, who named him Gulu.

Gulu thought that he could only be a salted fish Triceratops holding Tyrannosaurus Rex’s golden thigh in his life.

Unexpectedly, he helped the Triceratopses escape a big glacier, Pterosaurs flying away from the volcanic sea, and the Sea King Gliodon fleeing from the super storm…

He became the “King of Dinosaurs” when he was not careful and was honored as “King Gulu” by the dinosaurs.

Gulu: Dad, this name you gave me is not domineering or cool at all!

Mungo: Gulu, lovely.

Well, yeah it is cute, but it kinda s*upid. Just no way. It is a world where one sentient species hunts and eats other sentient species. Things just gets so contrived.

And the protagonist, he is a Mary Sue/Gary Stu. Everyone just likes him and those who don't are evil and unreasonable because... why would they hate or disagree with the protagonist? There must be something wrong with them.

The protagonist is also very passive. Things just happens to him. Nothing ever happens that come out from his actions and motivations (which... more>> he has none).

And of course the Deus Ex Machina that has to happen because the protagonist is just that passive. He just cries a lot and someone would come to help him out.

And the characters, they are meh. The protagonist is the worst. He is really blank. So blank and uninteresting that it is the other characters, even the minor ones who carries the story.

The other characters are rather flat but they do have their charms and compared to the protagonist are just way better. The problem with them is that they are all just there to praise the protagonist. They often don't have any characteristics that doesn't involve the protagonist. The protagonist is so much a Mary Sue.

The only good thing here is the fluff; but the fluff but if you want more substance than that, then this story is not for you. Anything else it offers is just sub par. <<less

Its a super cute story, and really easy to machine translate. Lots of family fluff and dinosaurs >, <
Spoiler

at one point Mungo, Pado (MC birth father), and another dinosaur fights over MC. MC has two other blood siblings and his non-related siblings get jealous. MC protects his younger siblings a-lot so they really look up to their big brother, their interaction is pure fluff >///<

I'm being educated about all the dinosaurs mentioned. The translator provides size comparisons, locations, and eras of every dinosaur in picture format. I usually MTL but I'm waiting on the translation because of the data provided.

Outstanding job, translator!! You are doing excellent work!!

Sure it's cute, but the premise is bizarre and unsustainable. Every T-rex besides the mother--the only female dino in the pack, incidentally--can tell MC is a Triceratops and and not a T-rex. She's clearly mature and intelligent enough to be a good parent, but somehow it completely escapes her that MC looks exactly like the prey she eats? It's literally just her, too, and not even the T-rexes who don't like the MC bother to tell her because... who knows, plot convenience. The explanation offered in the story is that... more>> she's too caught up in her grief over her unhatched eggs, or something. Sure, totally. Like how women who miscarry sometimes come home holding chickens and calling them their babies. Oh wait, no, that never happens.

The fact that the MC used to be human is only mentioned at the beginning and doesn't seem to come up at all afterwards, which, at that point why even bother to add that premise? Oh wait, except for that one time, where the MC spends a paragraph shitting on women who get abortions or leave their kids even if they can't financially support them ~because he was an orphan in his past life~ and praising his dino mom at their expense, as if raising baby dinos in a nest where food gets brought to you and you don't have to pay rent or utilities or cook or clean or hold down at least one job at the same time is the same level of difficulty as raising a human baby. I get being upset about being an orphan, but this leaves literally no outs for women with unwanted pregnancies (and where's the accountability for the fathers who just skip out here?). That's even setting aside the fact that putting your kids up for adoption doesn't necessarily mean you don't love them. Sometimes people do it reluctantly because they love them, and hope the kids will have a better life that way even if it hurts to let them go. Not like holding onto them in spite of your means always leads to a happy ending. <<less

I wanted to rate it 4.5 stars but don't know how_: (´ཀ`」 ∠) :

tbh I don't really know what to feel about the MC. (laugh) I did come for the romance but the novel have so many interesting sides and stories to offer, that it made me feel the romance was just an add on. Well it's the fluff isn't it ʅ(◞‿◟)ʃ

I actually can't really remember which chapter I was on. I think it was around 100-120 but I was pretty far in to the novel. Gotta... more>> say it's really good and remember this novel is 203 chapter long so the event is pretty much spreads out~
{ below is a it of spoilers + actual spoilers }

Theres also aspects such as conflict between as well as in tribes it self. Most Dinos couldn't stand the MC being with the top predictors. also conflicts in mates and so on.
The fact that the author can write a novel to an event that happens millions of years a go is worthy of prise non the less. It's refreshing to me a least. It's fun to watch the characters taking you on adventures.

also the ML of the novel
Spoiler

I not too sure. Lol even though it's a bit obvious... dunno man I- I- I think it's our cute T-Rex MuMu.

[collapse]

Spoiler

T-Rex mama wasn't blind for mistaking the MC as her child. She did actually realise and noticed it when MC and his really parents meet. She tried to push the MC away from the tribe but in the end T-Rex mama was really sad.

Spoiler

MC actually did turn back into his human form in the later chapter. But he is also able to keep his little Dino form too. This happened when we meet the flying dinosaurs who (if my memory is correct) was injured. He also has his own tribe too. The human MC was their a cave and poor boy nearly got eaten...

CUTE CUTE CUTE!!! I really don't know why this story's ratings are so low, when clearly there are worse stories in this genre with much higher ratings. Sure this story has its flaws, but I'd even say they're "necessary evils", and it doesn't have the critical points that make a novel annoying. Based on other comments, I thought MC would be super dull and too white lotus, the author expresses all sorts of controversial opinions, and generally that this would be a very boring novel. Not true! It's slow, but... more>> I personally didn't find this slice of life story dull.

The biggest flaw is probably the lack of scientific accuracy. Even though it's a pangaea setting, obviously it doesn't make sense for them to encounter so many dinosaurs of every known race literally every two steps. And it even more doesn't make sense that the TRex would be so kind fo triceratops and MC could meet the pterodactyls or the sea creatures. Furthermore, they probably don't even speak the same language. However, so what? The only reason for this is to make the story more interesting, and I say it fulfilled its purpose. If it weren't for this bending of rules, the story would be less exciting and informative. Clearly, the author wants to spread their passion for dinosaurs of all kinds and places, and in this way they are able to do it. Most importantly, although they break governing rules, they don't break the setting's own rules! This is a key flaw of many novels.

Also, why would you expect 100% accurate scientific dinosaur knowledge accuracy in a fiction novel? Are you reading this for science class? The author is trying and for the most part it's correct, but it's ridiculous to rate a story poorly on that basis. Even more so for a terrible reason; later on we even see MC interact with more powerful marine creatures, so it's not as if the author is claiming the T-Rex is the most powerful creature in the world. Clearly, they referred to on land.

When it comes to the thing with his mother though, Gaya probably knew he wasn't her real child. That's not the point; the point is that she's a heartbroken mother with deep traumas who is desperate to believe her children aren't dead. The race might not be the same, but it's not because she's dumb that she raises MC but rather because she's trying to comfort herself. It's a self-defense mechanism. She had to powerlessly see her previous husband eat her children, and now she can't bear for her children to die. She knows some eggs won't hatch but stubbornly clings on; it's the same idea. Also, about what the other readers mentioned regarding adoption / abortion / mothers, it was a bit strange but it literally appeared in 3 sentences and the rest of the novel never touches it again pretty much. It's more for setting the stage of Gaya's borderline-obsessive attachment than anything else imo.

Sure MC is pretty gary sue, but his character is very interesting. The entire story is quite humorous! He doesn't really have a golden finger; sure, his human person is very talented, but for the most part, it doesn't come in handy at all. Also, his human body DOES come up often later!

It's also hilarious that his favourite hobby is to have his adoptive brother or bio dad take him to watch other dinosaurs have s*x lmaooo

When it comes to the main relationship, I honestly don't have a problem with it. Mungo is an adolescent when MC is born, so truthfully the age gap isn't that big. The biggest issue is that he's always had a "fatherly" role, but even then after a while, it becomes more like a big brother that seriously spoils him. Although this isn't slow bonding, I'd say the romance definitely was slow coming which I personally enjoy. None of that BS die-for-you at first sight for me, thanks.

Anyway, give this story a try! I really don't know why it's so low. See for yourself! <<less

Not bad! MC is an herbivorous triceratops accidentally picked up and raised by the carnivorous T-rex. He can turn into his old human form but stays as a dinosaur most of the time, and no other dinosaurs have human forms. That plot point is honestly barely important since he basically acts like a young cub despite remembering his life as a human twenty-something. Aside from Gulu being really into dinosaur observations and having more human knowledge and intelligence, his human past life doesn't really come into play.

So far, this story... more>> is a lot of survival/growing up/meeting other types of dinosaurs. I'm not sure who the ML is yet, though if I had to guess - I would say the uncle T-rex Mungo? Honestly, it's pretty weird to think of the, uh, logistics of that, so I'm glad this novel doesn't go into explicit details. And now my search history has, "did dinosaurs interbreed?" so that's that.

This is definitely not a heavy on the romance shounen ai as of chapter 60 - though there are quite a few gay side pairings. I would read this if you enjoy animals, familial relationships, fluffy slice of life yet also survival of the fittest, and um - paleontology. Lots and lots of dinosaur facts.

Agree that the moonrune that the MC's rant early on about how different the dinosaur mothers are from human mothers who sometimes have abortions and give away their children is weird and off-putting, but it really is an exception and the rest of the novel isn't like that.

TBH this deserves around a 4/5, but reviews skew high for BLs so. <<less

The story is very very good, some part of them is so cute and fluffy.., and even can make you cry or angry.
One thing that I really likes about this translation is that you can know many type of dinosaurs.
The translator is even make the glossary and provide image about many dinosaurs in this novel.

For that I am really really very grateful. Thank you so much for your hardwork

(っ´▽`) っ♥ It's so cute. Fluff, drama, and dinosaur family bonding! Yay

I love how the carnivores grow to like the herb baby in their group.

Hmm... the shounen-ai is super subtle right now (why is this shounen-ai). It's more like the adults and his dino bros dote on the MC?

Very refreshing, something completely different.

It is a nice story.

But most of the details make no sense and the entire world is based upon a butchered version of what author know of prehistoric time.

... more>> First of all triceratops and similar species can eat meat they are more like boar than most herbivore. Even deer and giraffe eat meat if available.

Many plotholes like this are unnecessary for the story unlike the fact that a T- Rex is willing to adopt and raise a Triceratops.

A fluff story completly scientifically inaccurate. If you do not mind that and the fact that it is borderline BL and females are pretty much abandoned in the storyline. It is a easy read with only little over 200 chapter.

Just beware that MC is very s*upid. Yes this professor is as dull a brick.

And the MC is homosexual. He liked guys even as human. And this was fine.

Although I have nothing against homosexual relationships whatever it is male or female, but having male T-rex and male human in a pseudo sexual scene every dozens chapter is still somewhat uncomfortable.

Especially since Mungo became gay and started treatning and killing all females that try to woo him because of MC.

All couples except mc's mothers are gay. Author seems to be gay and thinks homosexuality and bisexuality is an innate thing but it is a choice. Genes and hormones might influence how one sees other people but one must choose a mate on their own. Just like how genes and hormones might influence alcoholism and violence it it a choice to fight or consume harmfull substances, gay people should be treated equally and not be protected as some kind of rare or endangered animal. Too much tragedy that could have been prevented. Only because MC is unwilling to help them because he thinks it will upset the natural order. As if a single dino could change anything that grand. He needs to make a dino empire.

Too sad. 😢😭😢😭 Mungo is broken as a character, he might seems charismatic when you do not really know him, but every time MC interacts with another person he goes on a murderous rampage killing hundreds of innocent females or males. He is a psychopath. Few creatures but humans hunt or hurt anything if not for the sake of survival. This Mungo loves to kill and torture. Not like how creatures of that time should behave. Yet he loves MC, his sister and brothers. <<less

This is perhaps one of the best cute and fluffy shounen ai themed stories but centralising on an adorable Triceratop by the name of Gulu. The style of story telling is very interesting especially the detailed descriptions of the dinosaurs here. Its like recounting of the past in National Geographic style! I totally learned a lot from there! The illustrations provided by translator did indeed help a lot, which was plus point too. And yes, there is gore in the story too. Well, what do you expect when meeting carnivorous... more>> dinosaurs?

Now, in terms of characters, there's so much growth in terms of character development, from the MC (Gulu) to ML (Mungo) which is the T-rex down to the main supporting characters especially Pado and the Triceratops and of course the T-rex from Mungo's side like Gaya (Gulu's adopted mom) and siblings. Even other dinosaur species were very interesting like Nassau of the Pterosaurs and even the sea dinosaurs like Beibei of the Pliosaur species. Aside from that, the vary types of characters had vivid portrayal that really affected me like Tata and Heiwu/Kangkang were very interesting to take note of. The author has good writing styles in portraying characters like Tata and Heiwu.

I like the vivid scenes and narratives told by author. Aside from being informative, the characters somehow made it relevant. Just to note some, the roles of herbivores and carnivores have taken a different turn when Gulu was raised by the T-rex. Gaya's inability to let go of the reality makes her a wonderful idea of a mother to us readers, but on the other hand, to the T-rex species, its abhorring to be mother of a herbivore dinosaur. That duality is appreciative.

One downside I noticed is how the image and idea of feminism was undermined. Given that maternal theme was well represented by characters like Gaya and Babana, there's also harsh reality of mother figure like Ulam which I conceded, however, my issue was more on the role of females in the story that I find was grossly undermined. Granted its a shounen ai genre, but I find the author seemed repulsive of heterosexual relations - not counting Pado and Babana which of different premise. If the author have approached it in a more objective way, then it would've been justified rather than dismissing female characters as of such which I find rather demeaning. I have no issues with reading shounen ai and I thoroughly enjoyed Gulu and Mungo's relationship, its just that this is the balance which the author lacked.

I also appreciate the time and effort the translator have done for this story. I wholly enjoyed the journey of Gulu trying to adapt the different lifestyle and finding acceptance in the beast world. The underlying theme of acceptance, inclusivity, knowledge, perseverance, trust and kindness is pronounced throughout. <<less

Cute but with facts on dinosaurs that are more than likely wrong. You can just look at the novel description above for an example on what I mean. "Tyrannosaurus Rex was the strongest carnivore known in the history of the earth". Hey mister strongest, go for a swim in the ocean, don't worry, you won't die. So yea, if the description is that bad on facts as well as grammar? Not much hope. Dropped.
