Beautiful! Warm, sad, wholesome! Don’t just take the words of all the reviewers. Read it! The writing is so good, insightful and intimate. It’s not an epic romance, it’s a love story like the one you’re living or you might live in the future. The translator puts a bit of her soul there and you can feel it. There are even some inconsistencies in the writing just to prove how much of a human the writer is, which, in my eyes, makes it even better. Please see for yourself and... more>> read it. <<less

thoughts

this novel is a hidden gem. Classic angsty slice of life novel and coming of age, but the pain hits so good. The writing is warm and comfortable, the characters extremely well written and realistic.

my honest first impressions of this novel is that is was slow. In book 1, yi zhe is a high school student yearning for xu tangcheng but there isnt a whole lot of action, so it was easy lose momentum. But book 2 was where it really started to pick up as yi zhe starts university, finally leaving his isolated home to enter society. At first, it was also hard to gauge what the story was going to be about as the summary doesnt reveal much and leaves a lot to be desired. For some reason the prologue made me think this was gonna be a sci fi novel lmao

one of my favourite aspects of this novel is the immense character growth both yi zhe and xu tangcheng went through. Yi zhe went from an isolated, naive, and stubborn child rebelling against the world by himself, to someone who could makes amends and yield for the love of his life. At first, he kinda had tunnel vision; everything he does had to be for the sake of his tangcheng ge, everything related to his tangcheng ge can only be black or white, good or bad. The extent that he was willing to go for xu tangcheng's happiness is immeasurable, but he doesnt have any sense of proportion and was willing to carelessly throw his future away despite xu tangcheng warning him that "the prerequisite for a future with the two of them was that there must be the two of them."

xu tangcheng, while more mature and steadfast since the very start, also had his share of growth. I think he really carries the whole 'big brother' title seriously and thinks that since he is older therefore wiser, he must be the one shouldering all the hardships of their relationship silently by himself. Hes incredibly protective of yi zhe because of his tumultuous past, and cant bear for reality to strip yi zhe of his character. But this amount of coddling is unhealthy at its core and it starts to wear him down. He develops unhealthy smoking habits and his coping mechanisms makes yi zhe worry as well, making him think he did something wrong, and so the strain on their relationship grows worse like a vicious cycle.

in fact, there were many times in the novel where they both decided to act first then report later. While it comes from a place of love and concern for the other party, they werent meeting head to head. Thankfully, at the end of the novel, they both realized that what they were doing was just hurting the other party.

i always thought they were gonna truly break up, since the prologue gave me that impression, but to my pleasant surprise that wasnt the case at all. They had to separate, yes, but methinks it was a well needed break to have both of them to cool down, think things over, and let 'absence make the heart grow fonder'. Letting go at that moment was probably the biggest concession they had to make for each other. The thing that absolutely PAINS me is how yi zhe thought that their break up was permanent, and was really ready to live the rest of his life alone in the shadow of his first love. And the part where xu tangcheng said that he never once doubted yi zhe's affections for him, but that he himself probably made yi zhe waver, just killed me. Yi zhe is simply that sincere.

Spoiler

and these are some of my favourite scenes!

1. Xu tangcheng's video where he read out his big apology and love letter. Apologizing to yi zhe for his faults, and telling him to wait for him. It choked me up real good : (

2. Their night at the gay club where they finally let go of their inhibitions and found peace in their own little world

3. Xu tangcheng getting drunk and secretly singing love songs in yi zhe's ears

4. The scene at blue harbor. Where xu tangcheng sung him a love song in disguise. Then filmed yi zhe running down the harbor bc he wanted to record a video of yi zhe running towards him bathed in the moonlight :' (

The story was good. Bittersweet really is the word to describe this novel. I just managed to cry my eyeballs out. Felt so sad and suffocated when I was reading this. Most of it was because of YZ to be honest. It's really a wonderful story but I just felt so bad for YZ because he deserves so much more. My heart ached for him even when the chapter is a sweet one because of how he gets happy and satisfied with things that are done in passing or is... more>> pretty much insignificant to others.

I feel like all he wanted was the love from people around him. He treats everyone sincerely and it was just so frustrating to see that his family just ditch him like that, as if he wasn't anyone important.

Spoiler

The only thing I was thankful for is even though YZ and XTC separated for a few years, XTC never gave YZ up. He never agreed his parents to leave YZ because he knows that YZ has no one by his side. Though YZ never knew the existence of the video until he came back to Beijing, I'm still really happy that XTC made preparations and left YZ with things that can reassure him while he is at the South Pole.

[collapse]

For those that feel that XTC did not love YZ as much, yall are so wrong. Although XTC has many people in his life that he loves including YZ, it does not diminish his love for YZ. Tbh before going to the South Pole, YZ was pretty naive and innocent in a way. Not that it was a bad thing, just that it's unrealistic in a realistic world. It took a painful lesson for him to realise that. Throughout his naivety, XTC never once told YZ about how he needed to adjust his mindset and that he could not always do things his way without considering for other things. XTC supported him through all that and bore the consequences of it. He did so so willingly that even I felt pain for him. Its not easy to juggle between his lover and family. After that, there's also his studies/work that he had to deal with after the incident with Yu An. He did the best he could and im very proud of him for not giving up YZ even in the harshest of times. Im so proud that im glad YZ has someone like XTC to love him no matter what. Afterall its great to have someone like that in your life :") <<less

Now that I have finished this story, I am so in love with the characters and the way their love for each other filled their hearts and mine. I just want to sit everyone I know in front of their prologue and wish them the same feeling as they take the same journey. Thank you to the translator for their hard work and posting regularly.

(after chapter 58) I am inhaling each chapter like it's my last meal. At this point, as I am also a writer, I believe I... more>> had figured out the ending and I don't know how to feel about that but I will keep charging ahead because, either way, this is a well-written (and well-translated) story that deserves to be devoured and thoroughly enjoyed. <<less

i liked this but unfortunately I didn’t love it. It was a poignant, beautiful, and bittersweet slice of life with wonderfully fleshed out characters but sadly I was more more drawn to the side couple than I was the main which is probably why I was invested but still felt eh about the whole thing. Don’t get me wrong, the writing, dialogue, and characterization were immaculate! I think me not appreciating this novel for what it is has to do with the fact that I prefer my modern danmei full... more>> of fluff with only a smidge of angst. This danmei was more so full of angst with only a small smidge of fluff. Still: this is 100% an underrated gem but please be aware of the warnings! <<less

Such a heartwarming story 🥺❤️ Loved it! Absolutely recommended!

As for my specific opinions about individual characters.....

Spoiler

Firstly, I loved both MC and ML so so much! Especially the Gong..... his life is just too tragic. When he had his last conversation with his dad, I almost felt like crying.

Speaking of which.... the father and brother are truly despicable. Don't get me wrong, In all these years of reading novels, I've read about much worse family situations. But whenever he was considering them his family, it truly broke my heart.

The shou's parents..... while I understand them, I also dislike them for indirectly putting my Boi through so much.

[collapse]

All in all, I really loved this story.

Ever since I read Saye, my standard for an outstanding BL novel had been set in stone. While I dare not say that this novel is as good as Saye, that is so close to my heart...... I would say that this one reminded me of Saye a lot.

To be fair, whenever I read a story where the MCs feel like actual 5d real people with emotion and not 2d paper people...... the story reminds me of Saye.

I cannot give a greater compliment to a story, than this 🥰 <<less

It's such a beautiful story, I don't have enough words to describe it. But I'd recommend everyone to read this masterpiece. This isn't my type of story at all; how I even loved the CP so so much is beyond even me, but I did. I loved them, their interactions, everything about them. I almost wish there were more extras.

Was the angst too much? Well yes I'd say it was, but it honestly depends. I was severely attached to them so it felt heartbreaking to me, but it might not... more>> be the same for everyone else.

About YZ and XTC. I really thought XTC didn't love YZ as much as the latter did. Perhaps I'd always believe that had I not continued reading after they had gotten together. XTC really showed how much he loved YZ, a great example of 'he fell first but she fell harder' trope which I absolutely adore. I now believe that perhaps XTC is in it deeper than even YZ, and that speaks volumes.

All in all, a great read. I loved every bit of it. <<less

Wow. Just wow. This one is so criminally underrated I can't believe it. The whole story is so bittersweetly beautiful that I could not help rushing over to the reviews and recommend everyone to read it. The ending is perfect so don't worry too much about the angst!

I think the high reviews for this book speaks for itself... It is a beautiful read.

I don't have any other adjective to describe it. It's just a beautiful book about the life of two young men and their joys and struggles.

It is a typical love story, and nothing about it is unique or out of the ordinary, but that's what makes it special. It is very relatable, and also very serene to read. Sometimes, all we need is an ordinary book that makes us feel like life is beautiful, and... more>> this book makes us feel it the best. There is pain, there is drama, there are drawbacks, but all of it together makes this book the worthy read it is. <<less

Bittersweet, realistic and poetic. I almost gave up on the prologue because I thought it would be super sad, but it wasn't so much ― it was kinda sad sometimes, since it's realistic, but it was very romantic and the ending was satisfying.

I leave an interesting quote:

"People only thought that homosexuals were "freaks" but they had never thought of why those people became "freaks." Nor had they thought that even if those people stopped fighting, stopped debating, and accepted that label, could these "freaks" that had never done anything wrong also live a good life.

Nature would not yet destroy a species because of "good" or "bad, " yet there were people who would judge that a group of people should not exist because of a reason like this."

It was a good read! The angst was frustrating to get through and always left me wishing there was more. I definitely agree that while this story was bittersweet and good, the ending was just so rushed and a little disappointing. I think it could have used a few more chapters to flesh out plot and character development. I was crying in the end and when I read the ending... felt like it was April fools day. Plus! There really was no huge dramatic build up so the story is... more>> just following their daily lives and routines and how they overcome these rather mundane social and life challenges. I love it. I enjoy reading stories that aren’t overly climatic so it was a perfect fit for me although at times I wished something more happened emotionally.

MaoEr FM currently has the radio drama airing and I had very different images and visions of what these characters looked like. If you’re interested, give it a shot. It’s still airing so the real pain is having to wait. Although they’re very much more than half way through. They have followed the story very closely, too. I honestly think YiZhe’s friend ZYK should have his own spinoff. His life sounds pretty exciting and so when nothing materialized goes his character... I was disappointed.

enjoy your read!!! <<less
