Rachel only realized it at the end of her life.

The Emperor of the empire, Ian Dakendov, that she was nothing to him…. She was an inconvenient burden for him.

It was a master – servant relationship, but Rachel was confident that she would go anywhere with him if he wanted.

Even that day when Ian was fleeing for his life under threat, Rachel was willing to follow him. She didn’t have the slightest hesitation even if it was a dangerous path. Because she didn’t want to leave Ian alone.

However, death was the only thing that returned to her who was with him in the difficult moment.

That’s how everything ended, she thought. But Rachel returned to the day before running away with Ian.

“I’m going to leave the Imperial Castle tonight. You should be ready too.”

In this life, she didn’t want to be hurt and abandoned. He didn’t need her and she didn’t want to look at him anymore.

Rachel ran away from Ian before the tragedy could repeat itself. To a place he didn’t know.

Ian wouldn’t find her, and even if he tried, he wouldn’t be able to find her in this vast empire.

She thought she’d never see Ian again…..

He came to the place where she escaped to.

When I first read this novel, I thought to myself, surely, surely the author cannot think that he or she was writing a legitimate novel that would appeal to readers. This novel features many tropes that are popular in novels, including, but not limited to:

  • Royalty
  • Childhood friendships/lovers
  • Cold ML who does not like to communicate
  • Misunderstandings caused and exacerbated by lack of communication
  • MC running away from the ML
All we are missing is a pregnancy and some in law drama.

I have only read 24 chapters of this novel, but even when I was 5... more>> chapters in, I was wracking my brains, thinking surely this is not a real novel?? This cannot be a real novel?? All the above tropes are so hyper inflated and exaggerated that it was utterly ridiculous.

And then it hit me.

Since a novel cannot be this bad by pure accident, the author must have purposefully written such an exaggerated and caricatured novel to highlight how ridiculous a lot of standard novel tropes are. This novel is actually a work of satire on other webnovels, and by magnifying all these actions and themes that readers tent to romanticise, the author is actually condemning them.

For example, this scene perfectly exemplifies how the ML being cold and “cool” by pretending to now know how to speak can cause confusion.

MC has escaped from ML and now happily lives in a rural village somewhere. ML suddenly shows up and without saying anything, she silently enters his carriage and he takes her back. To where? No one knows, because ML said like 2 sentences, none of which were of him explaining anything. In the same way, MC obediently goes along with this arrangement without actually asking or clarifying anything. It might have been easily solved if she had simply said, “I want to stay here, ” or, “who the hell are you get out of my house right now.” But she did what a lot of MCs do, and that is to be silent and assume things. And you know what they say: When you assume, you make an ass out of you and me. They are both asses. And idiots.

Adding onto this, another scene that highlights how MCs tend to assume things is one wherein the ML confesses to her. He first says, “stay with me.” Which maybe to him sounds romantic, but to me just sounds like he just kidnapped her and now is trying to convince her to not leave. This leads to more confusion until he confesses to her, saying very straightforwardly, “I like you.” Kudos to him he gets 1+ points for speaking straight. However, this is undone by the MC, whose immediate thought process goes something very similar to this:

what??>

He does not smile at me>

He makes the loveliest expression when he smiles>

He never smiled at me like that, like he is in love... >

His words are obviously fake.

Her thought process is very special and ridiculous.

I also really liked this line in the novel, mainly as it shows how hard it is for characters to be intelligent and use their brain:

No matter how much she tried, she couldn’t understand Ian’s behaviour”

“Oh, my head hurts.”

This is perhaps why most protagonists are idiots and hardly use their brains, because it hurts too much when they do.

All the while this is happening, ML has literally kidnapped MC to his castle and the author (purposefully) makes it very uncomfortable for us, by making the MC uncomfortable.

“No matter how uncomfortable her time was with him, it was just something she had to deal with.”

Rachel had become even more uncomfortable after hearing from Ian that he liked her.

This is because he has literally hunted her down to where she was hiding, and then processed to take her back to his castle (this is called kidnapping) and in the proves of helping her develop Stockholm syndrome. This feels wrong, because it is wrong. Thank you author for not making her start singing and dancing and acting like mistress of the house.

I shall give this 4 stars because as a piece of satire it is great.

I really do hope that I am right and that the author is not writing a legitimate novel, because if it is legitimate, then it deserves the #1 spot in the tr*sh. If it is a legit novel, then 0 stars. <<less

Good story and it would be five stars just for how good the translation is. I’m not a huge fan of
Spoiler

the fact that the ML was super cruel to the FL in his previous life and now is being kind to FL. I hate stories like this. The pain the FL experienced is real and now the ML is acting waaaayyy different. He literally abused her and now he’s in love with her? No thanks

Although I am aware that it is too early to judge, I can not continue reading this for the sole reason that the ML was absolutely terrible to the MC on her first life. It seems like the novel will go down the redemption path, but it's too excruciating to read. Even though the MC was treated badly, I cannot understand why she would forgive the ML so easily. At this point of the novel, she hasn't completely forgiven him but is already wavering. I hate that. I do not... more>> want them to be together, because -even if the ML had his reasons- what he's done too terrible to be easily forgiven. The 3 stars are for the translators who did really well. <<less

Not gonna rate yet. I sometimes crave tragedies and redemption of ml's is always a delicious plot points. But as of now I don't see how ML in this be redeem. He may not be most abusive in knovels. But he definitely unforgivable to be ML. I'm waiting for extreame grovelling from ML. And MC trample on him for long time.

Chapter 40.

Spoiler

I don't like the direction story flows. MC is wavering.

Edit 1

This sort of giving tachycardia so I'll just wait for chapters to pile up. Imo ML is extremely selfish but not uncommon for knovels

Translation is incredible (as usual from RainofSnow). Thank you, translator!

The actual story is quite fun if you are a fan of this genre, and has very typical tropes (that don't feel annoying or overused). ML who doesn't speak much, major misunderstandings between the ML and FL, ML chasing a FL, emperor-maid relationship, etc.

I said 4 stars instead of 5/5 because the ML feels extremely one-dimensional right now and his behavior is a bit abnormal (he doesn't try to speak to the FL at all beyond a few sentences and also... more>> hasn't explained anything about why he came looking for her). This is just not what a human would do after not seeing the woman you are in love with after 6 years apart. I love the misunderstandings trope but I don't think the author approached creating misunderstandings the right way (but my opinion might change after 50+ chapters! I'll update).

I really love the Korean josei historical fantasy webnovels set in a Western-esque nobility setting (you guys know what I'm talking about). Read this if you're looking for more in that genre! <<less
